hahaha yeah same i was 14 when he debuted in the summer of 2002 (in my hometown of Chicago no less). I stopped watching wrestling in early 2004, which was right around the time when he was becoming a star. Not quite a megastar yet but you could feel the momentum, especially since Lesnar was leaving the company later that year so to think that Cena's career is largely wrapped up at this point hurts my brain lmao
@Destino2493
@Destino2493 9 месяцев назад
Cena was the last megastar for WWE and that’s WWEs fault for not pushing anyone else during Cenas run on top, yes Cena was a good company man but that’s not always best for business, I’d say overall Cena was happy to do whatever he was told and collect his $ without a care about whether or not it was good for business or what the fans wanted, and let’s not forget the product got really unpopular when he was on top and he is a huge reason why, not the only reason but a huge reason
@bizil100
@bizil100 9 месяцев назад
I agree with that. When Cena first got on top, WWE's roster was LOADED! As time went on during Cena's run on top, the roster wasn't nearly as stacked. Due to guys retiring, passing away, or going to other companies. And WWE didn't do the best job of creating new stars to have compelling feuds with Cena. Hogan had OTHER pop culture icon level guys to feud with in Savage, Piper, and Andre. Or guys on that next level under that who were FOR SURE had IT factor in spades like Warrior, Orndorff, Dibiase, etc. And in the Attitude Era the same would apply as well. PLAIN AND SIMPLE Cena didn't have the same level of star power to feud with as his time on top went on. From there, WWE's creative wasn't clicking on all cylinders like it was during the Hulkamania and Attitude Eras.

WWE did make other stars during Cena's time. Look at Reigns, Rollins, Orton, Batista, Brock, Jeff Hardy, CM Punk, Edge, Miz ect. Cena's era was full of megastars who got pushed. Cena was just the biggest draw being the most charismatic of them all.
@bizil100
@bizil100 9 месяцев назад
@@dixonb.tweenerlegs4225 I"m talking guys in the MIDDLE TO THE END of Cena' s run on top. Cena, Orton, Batista, and Lesnar came of age at the same time pretty much. I'm talking about guys AFTER that. More towards the middle and end of Cena's of run. Reigns and Rollins are a part of a completely different era. And much younger guys on top of it. When Cena first hit the top and became WWE Champ, the roster was STACKED!!! Absolutely loaded! As time went on, the roster depth took a SEVERE HIT! Some guys like Punk went to the next level feuding with Cena in the middle to late stages of Cena's run on top. BUT once again AS WHOLE, the roster depth was still in transition. The roster was NOWHERE NEAR the Hulkamania Era, Attitude Era, or even the Ruthless Aggression Era during the later stages of Cena's run on top. I'm not talking about part time Cena when he was getting phased out. Edge was ALREADY on the rise BEFORE Cena came of age! Edge was gonna make it big time, that plan was ALREADY going well! With all due respect to Miz, he ISN'T face of the company or long term world champion material. I KNOW WWE tried to make Miz World Champion. BUT on a roster that's truly loaded with top notch star power, Miz SHOULD BE midcard at best. A valuable piece on the team. Once again Jeff Hardy was ALREADY ON THE RISE BEFORE Cena got hot! The Hardys were one of the most OVER tag teams in WWE history! From there, Jeff broke out in singles. And EVERBODY KNEW he would be huge! That ladder match against Taker on Raw PROVED that even further! So Hardy was LOOKING LIKE a future world champion BEFORE Cena hit the top!

I’ve talked about this before, Cena has longevity but he never peaked like Hogan, Rock, and Austin. Rock and Austin's runs were short, but they burned higher than Cena ever did. Hogan on the other the hand is a special case because he had even more longevity than Cena and he was as hot as Rock and Austin were at their peaks. He was pretty much responsible for two wrestling booms (his face run in the 80s, and his heel turn in the 90s). It’s honestly hard to argue against Hogan as the GOAT. Cena is one of wrestling’s biggest stars but I can't put him on the mount rushmore of WWE with those 3, I would argue that Andre is more worthy of that spot, after that it’s debatable (you can put Bruno, Taker, Cena, Savage, etc.) It’s also worth mentioning that a lot of people inside and outside of my circle who used to be big wrestling fans stopped watching when Cena was the face of the company. Now I’m not saying Cena was the sole reason for that (the product getting worse in general, the Benoit incident, stars leaving, etc.) but he was definitely a big reason.

@OneSideofFries

In my opinion when it comes to picking guys for Mount Rushmore, the 3 lock-ins are Hogan, Austin, & Cena. My reasoning for not saying Rock isn’t a lock-in is because he was always considered 2A to Austin’s 1A during the Attitude Era. Hogan, Austin, and Cena were the respective faces of their eras. To be able to pick that 4th spot of that Mount Rushmore, it would have to be someone who was the face of their era. That spot would seem to be reserved for guys like Bruno, Bret, or Roman due to the fact that the promotion was built around them during their time on top.

Yep. PLUS Taker was more of like a new age Andre. He was a wonder of the world type of icon. For the FACE OF WWE, Vince wants guys who can go to the talk shows and award shows. Guys who are well spoken and can be the face of a league. Andre and Taker FOR SURE are pop culture icon level guys known the world over. And ONLY a small group of legends reach that type of status. Taker being the face of the company would have TOTALLY taken away from his mystique as The Deadman. BUT guys MADE to be THE FACE of the company are guys like Hogan, Austin, Rock, and Cena. I'm surprised none of the discussion centered around WWE's kayfabe claims to Cena being the greatest of all time, which in theory should center solely around his in-ring accomplishments. And to that end, Cena spent 1,254 days as WWE Champion and 155 days as World Heavyweight Champion. His combined 1409 days rank higher than all but Sammartino, Hogan, Backlund, Reigns, and Lesnar (when adding up WWE, WHC, and Universal runs). He had 16 reigns as world champion, a number no wrestler has surpassed in WWE. (Even if I don't personally care about total title reigns, some do.) And he did so in what could be kayfabe argued as a more difficult era, since his time on top came post-territory, post-merger, and pre-AEW (in the same way that NFL Championships pre-merger aren't as regarded as titles in the Super Bowl era). Purely from an accomplishment perspective, the claim is plausible, even if it's not one I'd ascribe to.

I've been pondering about this, and I think the reason is far simpler: John Cena never got a nickname. Think about it- Every top superstar has another moniker they can go buy, some sort of nickname (and in some cases several) that add to hyping them up. "The Immortal", "The Nature Boy", "The Heartbreak Kid", "The Hitman"/"Excellence of Execution", "The Rattle Snake"/"Toughest SOB", "The Cerebral Assassin", "The Most Electrifying Man.." etc. John Cena, surprisingly, never had something like this when he was at his peak popularity. They are making up for it now, by simply labeling him "The GOAT." But yea, it kinda bothers me. I'm fine if there are fans with that opinion, but I'm not fine with it being stated like it is objective fact. This is why Michael Cole is still the worst. He declares this about Cena as if it's indisputable; He can't even coat the statement with 'arguably' because he's literally not allowed. And it is so GD patronizing to the viewer. 26 years of someone in his ear telling him what to say, which means he's just a mouthpiece for the WWE propaganda machine, and not a wrestling commentator who's capable of having an original thought of his own.

Cena reminds me a lot of Lebron for basketball fans. Someone who the sports world or WWE badly wants people to accept as the GOAT even though people never largely embraced either the way they did Stone Cold, Hogan, MJ or Kobe. Ratings plummeted when Cena was on top, same for lebron, attendance was trash at many arenas same for the NBA, and people use their longevity as proof they are head and shoulders better than the past greats which isnt true. I do think both men are good people and dont cause too much drama for their brands There was a lot of manipulation with cena there was a time on raw when he was US champ for example EVERY match was short shitty 5 minutes matches on long boring 3 hour shows except for Cena matches and he'd get all the credit for having the best match and shit like that. Or WWE releasing 1000 new shirts anytime someone they didnt want to get over, got over. Of course he'd be loyal or wouldn't push back when he was the beneficiary of Vince decisions every top guy would protect their spot. John Cena's in ring work, or lack there of, prevents him from being considered the greatest of all time. What you can make an argument for, as it pertains to Cena, is that he is probably the best company guy the WWE has ever had. He has represented the company, across the globe, in the media, personal appearances....etc., better than anybody. I'm old enough to have seen these big names come and go, and for my money that title should go to Ric Flair. He was the complete package.

Great points! Also have to factor in Vince made Cena's persona LESS EDGY early into his run on top. He was NO LONGER the Dr. of Thuganomics! The Dr. of Thuganomics is what pushed Cena to the top! When Cena first got on top, WWE had a LOADED ROSTER! Full of legends, guys in their prime, and young blue chippers with a ton of potential. As time went on the roster wasn't NEARLY as deep. So there wasn't as many compelling matchups for Cena to get involved in. So MOST of the issues Cena went through weren't on him at all!

Vince went away from Thuganomics and wanted Cena to be hip hop Hogan for the little kids. BUT what Vince did was cut Cena's legs out from under him in a sense. It might not have been apparent at first because fans were happy Cena was on top. And WWE still had a loaded roster. BUT when it was time for Cena to adapt his persona, Vince DIDN'T ALLOW HIM to do so! NOW Cena is a living legend who doesn't get booed really anymore. BECAUSE the WWE fans are SEEING a truly iconic megastar. Who transcends the WWE! In other eras in the past, Vince had a MULTITUDE of true megastar power. Nowadays WWE doesn't have that going for them. I'm talking pop culture icon level guys. Or guys on that next level under that. So it makes people REALIZE how great Cena was!

Fans who loved the edgy Cena thought he wasnt as cool anymore. As time went on during Cena’s prime run, the roster wasnt as deep. The overall creative at WWE wasnt as good. And they never allowed Cena to change his persona. Cena became world champ material with ruthless aggression Thuganomics. And the kids loved him. Kids love edgy things they might not need to like. Lol. But to cover all their bases and truly come across as family friendly, WWE went the Hogan route with Cena. But millions of fans ALSO wanted Thuganomics Cena to dominate on top. Cena FOR SURE is top 10 GOAT in WWE. My top 10 in no order would be: Hogan Austin Rock Taker Savage Cena Andre Bruno HBK Bret Cena CAME OF AGE when WWE had an ALL TIME loaded roster! He was a young pup and got over HUGE with the Dr. of Thuganomics. He started getting booed BECAUSE WWE started going into more of kid friendly lane. They were getting away from Ruthless Aggression. WHICH STILL had some elements of the Attitude Era. The edginess from Cena's character was gone. And Vince wanted him to be like new age hip hop version of Hogan. And FROM THERE as Cena's time on top went on, the roster wasn't as loaded. WWE was in transition. A lot of top stars retired, passed away, or went to other companies. There wasn't as much star power around as when Cena first got on top. Cena vs. Miz HEADLINED a WM! LMAO That's how you know the star power of the company was TOTALLY different than the early to mid 2000s. So u can't blame Cena for Vince making Cena less edgy. U can't blame Cena for Vince not turning him heel to give him new life. And u can't blame Cena for the decline in star power that happened at one point during Cena's run on top. With all this said, Cena's run on top and era he was in DIDN'T have a grip on mainstream America like the Hulkamania Era and The Attitude Era. That's why Hogan, Austin, and Rock are widely regarded as the Holy Trinity of WWE. BECAUSE they were transcendant stars in the top two eras EVER in terms of mainstream dominance! Don't get me wrong, Cena is a transcendant level icon as well. Just not Hogan, Austin, and Rock level. WWE's creative and roster depth was clicking on ALL CYLINDERS when those guys were on top. In complemented their star power PERFECTLY! During Cena's run, the roster depth and creative side weren't CLICKING on all cylinders the same way! Not Cena's fault at all!

Most of it is I always said if he was more selfish I think people would like him more. They started force feeding people to him and those same all time great wrestlers like Hunter, HBK, The Rock, Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, and Y2J couldn’t get him over because the audience started pushing back on him. Batista was more over than him in 05 if it wasn’t for his injury in 06, we might be having a different conversation right now about Cena. He never truly reinvented himself I think that’s why Vince has infatuation with him because Austin, Bret, Hogan, and Savage had no problem voicing their opinion to Vince and Rock left for Hollywood never look back they even let his contract expire because of the animosity, and HBK was a load to deal with backstage.

John cena is a brand. It doesnt mean he cares becUse he does charity. Its part of his brand persona. Look at all the videos hes made. Exact opposite of who is WWE character is.

John Cena's character can be considered the G.o.a.t because he is the most accomplished top star ever. From all the big matches he won to all the world titles he won. To all the top stars he defeated. No other top star had a run like John Cena. And because of his resume he deserves to be in the conversation. To me personally i believe Stone Cold is the greatest. And the Rock is #2.

Him being called the greatest of all time is just an opinion obviously, not sure why anyone is triggered over him being called that and by WWE no less, I swear fans take small shit like this so personal like how does that affect you.
