Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos is one of the most unique experiences on the NES, but it certainly doesn't hold your hand. You're dropped right into a mysterious castle with little instruction on what to do next. The many rooms you'll explore are filled with puzzles, and to solve them you'll need cleverly manipulate objects in the environment. If you enjoy the puzzle solving elements of a game like The Legend of Zelda, this one is definitely worth a try!
Few games on the NES give the player so much freedom to explore. To win, you'll need to find the six pieces of the Staff of Demnos, but how you get them is up to you! For an even deeper experience, getting 100% completion on this game requires you to visit all 252 rooms, and collect every hidden item!

There were few things more mysterious as a kid than knowing that a seemingly impossible NES game had an ending programmed into the cartridge that you would never see.

the crazy thing is that FINAL FANTASY 1 uses MORE than basic NES chips, the basic NES coding does NOT allow one to code on a cart FF1 with the basic nes composition... I was appallaed when I learned that so I understood I should focus on learning SNES coding and forget NES since all NES games further than launch are not possible with the core tech. Likewise, Gameboy games had such a progress when the 3D concept was brought up by those UK dudes of DOOM.

I've managed to speed run this game in under 6 minutes fairly consistently because Ive played it so often. Definitely not an easy game but one of the most memorable.

I have often wondered how gamers today would react to games that we grew up with. Hard, no continues, nothing would get me so mad as the bounce back from being hit in the old games…still does. Lol. your channel is the best gaming one out there. Looking forward to saturdays thx brother

I was a kid during the NES/SNES days and I've got modern gamer kids now. I have done what I can to introduce them to the classics. It seems like the graphics are the thing that turns them off the most. Certain classics still kind of hold up to them like Mario 2 and 3 are fine but Mario 1 is a no-go. As far as the difficulty, they get frustrated with the same parts that we did except the difference is that instead of having 5 games and you're already sick of 4 of them, they've got access to a practically unlimited amount of games so they just exit and play something else. My youngest son did beat Mega Man 11 by himself (on baby mode) and he was very proud of himself. I think that game is a pretty good bridge between old school and modern games.

Games of NES were the challeges to face. Even with it "looks" easy, wrong. I still enjoy those games to this day

They'd be upset over not having access to all of the games "content", which by paying for it they feel entitled to. Video games aren't toys meant to challenge their developing minds anymore, but are now considered a legitimate form of narrative expression. It is more important that a game deliver writing, character development, and world building that would get a Netflix original series cancelled in it's first season than offer an interactive challenge and if they can't see how the story ends just because they couldn't solve some stupid puzzle that only nerds have the time to think about or beat some boss that actually requires knowledge of how the gameplay works then it's unfair and borderline ablist. Video games must offer what every other medium can do far, far better while minimizing what actually justifies their very existence.

This is one of the best puzzle adventures on the NES platform and its title screen track is second to none! Thanks for showing this tragically underrated beauty! Solstice is still one of my prized gaming possessions after all this time.

This is the first new game I remember. All other games we had before, I just remember always being there. I came down to the basement to find my dad and brother looking at this, fresh out of the box. One of the things that stuck with me was reading the manual over and over. The little story adds so much flavor and motivation, not to mention giving a general description of the layout. (btw, it's Stonehedge Gardens, not Stonehenge Gardens) A wonderful game for exploration!

Another note is that this game was made for PAL. Tim Follin has said that the music was supposed to be heard at that speed, and the game takes on a more methodical feel.

As many hours as I played this as a kid you'd never suspect it can be beaten, let alone 100% completed in half an hour lol. Another old puzzle game I loved was Solomon's Key, I'd love to see you play through it one day!

Solomon's Key is a excellent game. The problem with that game was my mom discovered it back in the day and she got hooked and my sister and I were not allowed to play Nintendo until she was done which was over a week. I still play the game quite often.

Yessss ...been asking so long for this. If you have guides and all that, it can be all done quickly. On your own, it was tough...and creepy. The shreik when the robe collapses, it still haunys me.

The sequel is cool it has more of a fantasy theme and the music is really sparse and trippy. The music never resets when you die which is cool you notice that the music constantly resetting when you die causes anxiety and stress

I remember playing a pre-release version of this at the Nintendo Powerfest 1990. It was clearly overshadowed by other games that came out around the same time, namely Castlevania III, Double Dragon II, and Super Mario Bros. 3.

I first encountered this game at Nintendo World Championship/Expo 1990, along with Crystalis. I got to try both games out there and bought Crystalis later that year. I ended up missing out on Solstice for a little while longer, but it did end up in my collection eventually. It and its SNES spiritual successor Equinox are on my list of games to finally beat if/when I retire in a few decades. :)

This doesn't need a LIKE button, it needs a LOVE button! Loved the award-winning title music music and the atmosphere of this game when it first came out. Always made it to the final tower, but couldn't get up there without the Game Genie!

I remember I had the choice between this and Shadowgate at a Toys R Us. I picked this because I remember Nintendo Power had the unlimited lives code. I never got very far even with that, but I'm still glad I picked this one instead.

1) I remember seeing ads for this game when I was a kid and thinking that 200+ rooms would be the ultimate challenge. I never got the game because it was either always sold out or way too expensive, so it's an awesome hit of nostalgia to see that the game is actually relatively short. 2) I love the increasingly Quagmire-esque readings of "All riiiiiight!" at the start of each game. 3) Turns out there's a second way to kill Morbius. You just have to cast Jared Leto.

I had never played this game, and scantly remember it from my memories, but I enjoy this channel so much I’ve watched anyway. One thing I do remember is loving Tim Follin’s magic with the 8-bit music, most especially in Taito’s SkyShark, and I am over here JAMMING to this game’s music. It’s so unorthodox and I can’t easily box it into a certain genre, but I’m digging it!

This is a game that I played when I was a kid. I was finally able to beat it while in high school. Thank you for covering this game. Also, I never knew about the infinite lives/potions code (didn't have Nintendo Power growing up), so that would have made things far easier. You good sir have earned yourself a subscriber.

I remember the Equinox ads in GamePro and EGM showing the kid becoming an old man and never finishing the game. His nephew/grandkid skipped the funeral to conquer more of the land. Watching this tells me it's cryptic nature might actually take more than one generation to 100% D'oh!!

Oh snap he's playing it guys! I still remember how hard this game was until I learned a couple of tricks related to jumping and refilling potions. Oh yeah I forgot to mention. That double jump technique is actually an infinite jump technique if you are skilled enough. Some runner literally flew across a room during a speed run.

Dude I beat this game back in the mid-90's, so great to see some love for this game. It's fucking amazing. Equinox was even better, but I love this game to death. You could just start playing and over the course a few days figure out how to beat it, so classic.

I loved this kind of games. Rented this one once as a kid but never figured out of to properly play it. Not having the manual and not mention in game magazines (where I lived) was an issue too. This is the kind of games this channel is excellent for! Other already mentioned, but Solomon’s Key would be an excellent addition. Maybe also Moai-kun/Moai kid.

I swear you pick the games that have the asthetics and atmosphere I'm most fond of; if I were doing the channel, The game choices would be almost identical to yours. I've always wanted to check out Solstice, it looks so cool, a contained labyrinth with every room having its own puzzle .

Watching this reminds me why I even stopped playing and gave up. I just could never get the mechanics down at a young age. Would love to give it a shot now in my 40s.
