As far as I know, this hasn't been done before. Not quite in this way, at any rate. Let me show you the Yikong 4106 Pro, which is a full-featured, 1/10 scale RC crawler with some clever new tech. I think you're gonna love it! (This isn't my usual review style. We're going to get the know the car with some exploration, before it hits the rocks.)

Called "cutting" brakes... Tractors use this idea 1:1 comp crawlers, too.

Check out the CowperTrucks 'suzuki extreme 4x4 challenge' vids here on youtube. Extreme cutting brakes! In these cars the copilot runs brakes for each wheel and they are working hard for sure.

Yes I had it on an old utility trike called a Helm Farmhand. I copied it for a VW trike that had problems steering under acceleration. Just right and left hand brakes instead of dront and rear.

Not going to lie, a cutting brake is a pretty cool feature for a crawler. Much more viable a thing for a true rock crawler, but happy to see some innovation! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Matt, I didn't even know of cutting brakes before this car. I learned from a few commenters here. It's a great idea and I like it better than DIG (for turning). Just would like to see full commitment to it with brakes that clamp well enough to work on rock. Someone in the comments suggested these would be good as front brakes on 2WD models, too. I thought that was a fine idea and it might work really well! Could be a useful feature on SCTs in particular.

This guy gets it. Yes, thank you, and agreed 👍 You get to kinda role play with the car, like you're in it, using the various features on the trail as you drive. There's a child-like element of play to it. It's very appealing.

Been a factory Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda , pro bicycle mechanic for combined 45 years. From the 70's on, I have lived to see technology advances across all these areas. Now RC. Some advances are good. Example: Shimano SIS. STI. Look pedals, to name a few. Then suspension came. Then 8 speed, 9, 10, 11, 12 speed. Mechanical disc, Hydraulic disc. Steel frames, aluminum, carbon glued, then full carbon frames. If your a person not in the industry, of seeing first hand the pro's and cons of " new" technology, the consumer can easily get caught up in the " more is better" tidal wave. I have seen much of this. A lot of innovation is driven not so much as necessary, but by engineers and business to make profit. Some innovation is actually really good, and adds benefits. Some is terrible and causes more problems than does good. When carbon fiber bicycles came out, everyone is like "wow, cool". Ive worked on many a carbon frame an seen the cheap , engineering on these frames. And I mean the top brands. Some brands do it right. Some not. Innovation can be good, or can be just more complicated and $$$ costly.
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 месяца назад
Sometimes innovation brings new tech to the fore in an unrefined manner, but through that process you get to see refinement as more folks spend time engineering the idea, eventually leading to a refined and useful new way of doing things. Remember when v-brakes were the new hotness in the 90s? Then hydraulic discs became a thing and now even cable-actuated discs are comparable to v-brakes. But it took time to get there. Of course, then there's the Trek 9000 and its auto-eject rear suspension, haha!

Very cool RC. For $405 Canadian, that's a whole lot of truck. I initially brushed Yikong aside as I thought they made clones or rebranded stuff but I'm glad to be wrong. It's got all the features of the big boys at a fraction of the cost and disc brakes! I agree that the possibility of traction control for fast vehicles is exciting. Can you imagine doing a speed run with traction control? It would make a lousy driver like myself be able to get crazy speeds. Thanks for introducing me to Yikong! I hope your Pops? The frosted windows can be made clear if you varnish them. Just figure out which side has the frosting by scratching it with your nail. You may need to paint the details inside the cabin which is most likely the resason why they frosted the windows.

This video must be addressing some need on RU-vid. I hope people find it delivers! (and though I intentionally tried to share my confusion from the start with this thing, I hope this choice doesn't put people off from the rest of the video. It's a car worthy of attention.) So, I like the FCX10, it's rather neat. Am looking forward to doing its video too :) Of course, it's 30% more expensive than this car, but they're both excellent rigs. I prefer the fms for its licensed body and their own tire design. I really don't like clones, it's lazy and bad for the industry. But the new tech was cool enough I overlooked the body in this case.

Honestly, it's about time. There are so many mechanical/electronic features that could be implemented on RC... Instead of incorporating fe variable torque splitters or Torsen diffs, RC cars are getting dumbed down to a point they're just not interesting anymore. A Traxxas X-maxx has the features of a 30$ toy car compared to a 3906 E-maxx.

Maybe not scale but individual motors for each wheel connected to a drone flight controller and some clever software could drastically improve drivability and reduce mechanical complexity. Like the Mammuth Works RC but with Chinese manufacturing knowhow and refinement. Only one servo for steering (maybe one more or rear steer), 4 motors (no or minimal transmission), a 4 in 1 ESC/controller/receiver would only be needed to perform all the mechanical functions of differentials, individual wheel brakes, reverse, over/underdrive to each wheel (even ZERO radius skid steering!)
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 месяца назад
You're not wrong, but there's a nuance here. I'll cover it in my FCX10 video, coming soon, but I see utility and scale as two ends of a spectrum, and there are hobbyists/enthusiasts on both ends of it. We do have the comp class Pro/MOA 2.2, where MOA stands for Motor On Axle, and they're very capable rigs. But then, a separate transmission, transfer case, mechanically actuated 2-speed, lockers, etc. are all a source of delight to those of us who appreciate scale recreations of the real thing. And of course everyone has their preferences and some like scale but still keeping it simple - Matt of @scalebuildersguild is an example of such a person. That's fine with me - I'm just grateful that there's so much choice to be found in the hobby these days. It's amazing!

Thank you, it's good to be back. Glad you're feeling better. I'm nowhere near well, but grateful to be able to get out and about. Could be worse and yes, trees and fresh air are a boon. The steering damper is a servo saver. You could look at it as an upgrade for stock servos but once you have a stronger servo, it's not really needed. There's another variant that looks like this but isn't a damper. Instead, it's an adjustable length steering rod. Mainly cosmetic, but looks the same as a damper. That's the one to get if you want one, I think. But it's cool on this car - adds to the complexity of it, which is kind of its thing 😎

The wheel feels nicer on the Yikong implementation, believe it or not. I like the foam on the FMS variant, but it's lighter weight and the spring is a bit softer. I don't know if that's all it is, wheel weight and spring tension, but gosh the wheel on the Yikong variant feels premium! I love it.

Like diskbrakes idea on smaller scale, but for another purpose. More thinking on a serious fast 2wd. I have some, but you really need to take in account the space needed for braking. I already had the crazy idea off taking a 4x4 (loose front mid joint) and then use front diff as disk housing and fiddle somehow a brake mechanisme in there but never tried it. But curious to see how good it works in real live. I've had a 5th scale off-road with hydrolic front disk brakes (there also were machanical) and they very often didn't work properly. Often braked uneven or they didn't let loose the disk completely. But that was something like 15 or 20 years ago. Would expect some improvements in the meanwhile...
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 месяца назад
Yes! An undriven front diff with a disc on the drive shaft, somewhere in the chassis, that'd be how you'd achieve that idea I think. But now, these disc brakes are simple and light enough that they're the better option. And if you only want it for breaking rather than traction control, a single servo could manage it for the front or even all 4 wheels. It's an exciting development.
@peteroosterhoff8850
@peteroosterhoff8850 2 месяца назад
@@RCTNT yes, i hope this will be implemented in the future in more cars like 2wd's (so i don't need experiment things myself). We bought and tested on-, and off-road our 10th buggies 2wd vs 4wd. The only thing what kept me from winning in our own created "race"conditions/tracks was the braking but was still real close. Eventually we ended up racing 2wd's. We thought they were more spectaculair to drive. But man, if it would brake like a 4wd.... Also have other rc's, also in different sizes and 4wd, but under the right conditions i prefer racing 2wd...

Faulty servo or faulty setup i.e. no servo end point adjustments? For a "digital" yes/no channel, being able to adjust end points is crucial.
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 месяца назад
Faulty servo. You do have end point adjustment on this radio. There's a config mode (full right, full reverse, power on) and then you actuate whatever channel you want to adjust and then the steering wheel to set. It was a faulty servo in this case. It happens sometimes in both cheap and expensive models.

…i dont think 1/8th scale cars have a lack of power.. i’d like to mess with an electric, but, with the older style nitro brake, and adjust the front rear bias… i would think its not as easy as just adding the motor cause throttle would be ESC then brake to the servo…? Not sure how that could be “tested” to see if it works…

Mixing could get you there, as far as control goes; whenever breaking with throttle, don't send a signal lower than zero to the esc but instead proportionally send that negative signal on another channel, to which the breaking servo/servos is/are connected. Take it a step further with traction control via independent wheel braking: each wheel's speed could be monitored with a hall sensor on each axle or wheel, depending on the car. I bet I could write the monitoring and braking system for Arduino, it could be entirely separate to throttle inputs. It's so close I can taste it! Diff lock is done better on the Yikong; the fms works but that actuating arm on each diff is very exposed. Dunno how it'll like being muddy. Build wise, they're similar. This chassis is fibered nylon, as stiff as a Gen8's chassis ... it's not a toy but a real chassis, low profile, with not much above it's top line.

When I read the chassis was plastic, I thought similarly to you at first. Yes, It is plastic, but it's very stiff. It has less flex than some rigs with C-channel steel rails. And because it's plastic, it's lighter - a real benefit on any model! Rock crawling test coming soon, you bet. Vehicle weight, without battery: 3.4kg or 7.5lb. (It doesn't come with a battery, so I won't include the weight of one as it's largely a redundant figure).

@@RCTNT 3.4kg on pro version is quite heavy, surprised since i though it will be lighter because the plastic chassis. Ok I'll wait for the usual review 👍👍

5:15 didn't mercedes put that on their F1 cars and were banned because it was an unfair advantage? They cornered like they were on rails.....

The WRCCA rules will probably write this out in future too, if it becomes common. For now, I think it'd be okay. Not that this car would crawl well enough to make it worth using. (Unless I took the axle and servo out and put it into my usual comp Scale-1 rig... hehe)

Why do Aussie birds say Mark, Mark, Mark! Cut those windows out, Winch, Whaaat, Aussies are known for burnouts not winching.. Use it as a Line Lock button.. All these toys need to be weighted down with a Bluestone Block.. Too make suspension look legit..

Those breaks will overheat fast
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 месяца назад
On a fast car they may, but not a chance on this rig. They don't grip super well (wish they worked better on high traction surfaces!) and they're only in use periodically. The wheels turn slowly enough on this car that heat will never be a consideration for this kind of implementation, IMO. But on fast cars for traction control, like we discussed in the video? Or for front braking on RWD vehicles like we've been discussing in the comments here? Well, yeah, that's actually a very pertinent point I hadn't considered!

It's possible, but not to my knowledge. The old Bruiser had 2wd H, 2wd L, and 4wd L. The Hilift Hilux had a 3-speed. Their trucks often have a 3-speed, too.
