The pop-in is actually a nod to sonic moving faster than the speed of light, so the objects don't actually show up in his cornea until he runs headfirst into them. Bravo Sega
The big debate is how much player expression is actually realistic. People wanted Sonic CD’s intro in terms of traversal but Sega thinks it’s impossible without springs, rails and boost pads etc automating everything.
@@angeihd no it sucks, even slowest sonic should be able tu run circles around seagull... Game just sucks that's all there is to it. In fact using wildlife to show how fast so i is would be grate idea to show the difference but that would require at least one of the devs to finish basic game design tutorial.
@@widerekxxanimations6842 lmao game looks great no lie. it’s gonna be game of the year for serious and for joke. i’m sure it’ll get some updates but some of the jank is classic 3D sonic
the part where sonic hit his head on the rock then sorta just slid down onto the ground was an astonishing level of animation that even the animators of bookworm adventures struggle to recreate. a true masterpiece.
When you're faster than the speed of light, you can only live in darkness. I guess the team really believed that, and wanted players to feel that speed
When the trailer came out the first thing I thought was, "oh god it's another "open world game", the next was " this looks like some messed around in the Unity engine for a couple of hours"
Its not open world. Also he's attempting to leave the tutorial area early. BOTW also doesn't let you leave the plateau without learning the mechanics first. The second instance of him being walled off is him attempting to enter the end game boss arena early, which is ultimately an invisible dome you can run around. It isn't blocking his access to the waypoint marker.
@@dopeville2009 You're saying the user scores were paid for? That would be the biggest waste of money and anyone can add to them. No publication goes by user scores for accolades.
Dunkey yelling “I played KNACKKK!!!” at 4:28 is one of the greatest Dunkey moments of all time. Honestly that whole super sonic segment killed me. Please attend my funeral, no regrets.
not really though, the controls are pretty tight, and I really like the direction - I see a lotttttt of positives in this game and hope they keep going in this direction for the next one
@@bb3k761 I'll respect your opinion, but I happened to like the game quite a lot. By no means was it perfect, but I don't think it deserves any hate. It's ok if you didn't have as much fun with it as I did.
@@bb3k761 Bruh what, how is BotW not revolutionary? It set the standards for Open World games, and many games even copied its open world formula, even Elden Ring.
My favourite part was when Sonic said "Don't drink the water. They put something in it, to make you forget. I don't even remember how I got here" classic Sonic
@@bluefin844 The Sonic community is used to being fed shit. So, calling this $60 rip off that's worse than early ps2 games "great" means nothing coming from you
@@Nu63 it's because people in the Sonic community are super hyped about this game (I beat it day 3 after launch) Is it perfect? No, but it's the best Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2, and the style and humor haven't really aged well in there for once characters have personality and some kind of story, it's a good foundation. A lot of people, including me, are hyping up this game way more then needs be because of the quality of this one compared to erm... Sonic Forces which is hands down the worst entry ever made in the series
@@booker8316 Yes, people understand that it's "the best Sonic game in ages." The humour comes from the fact Sonic fans have reached such exceptionally low standards that they praise complete mediocrity. I say as someone who was very much a Sonic fan until I just accepted over the decades that giving them any money is a misallocation of resources, even when they manage to create something average.
The user reviews are nothing but little babies whining about the Dark Souls-style gameplay and minimalist storytelling. I never thought we'd get to the day when user reviews are even worse than the critical consensus, but here we are.
@@Los499 the honeymoon phase is over dude, how are you still dickriding elden ring? the game isnt that great, its a bloated mess that compromised on fromsoft's design philosophy. actually one of their worst games to date. its a 7/10 on a *good* day.
@@Los499 Yeah every review is some combination of "Empty world" (There's literally something crammed into every nook and cranny in the game, I assume they wanted like a hub city or something?) "No story" (The story is there but it's not in your face because it's not the point) "Boss rush and too difficult" (What did you think it was going to be? It's FromSoftware and it's the most accessible title they've ever released.) Hopefully it wins GotY so I can get some sanity back.
Thank you so much for this incredible video, Santa Claus, and for introducing me to Dunkey's Castle which is truly the world's first open-zone store. I was delighted to discover that the store's international shipping policy even contained strand-type elements.
@@GUNUFofficial Sonic as a "game" is an afterthought. The entire sad state of the series comes down to the fact that since 2005 he's essentially been the fluffy lovable mascot of a company who mainly pulls sales from people gambling at pachinko machines.
I don't think anyone else on the internet can break Dunkey's monopoly on the gag of "babbling frantically while trying to cacth up to what is happening, drowned out under the noise of tremendous chaos." Flawless execution, every time.
The reason this game has so much pop in is because none of these new systems have blast processing like the genesis did. If Sega released this on the Genesis, it'd be a 10/10.
True words. Only the Genesis could process no pop in, that's why Sonic 3 has good graphics, gameplay, and most importantly, momentum, a thing that could not be replicated in modern hardware.
I love how studios are taking that leap of faith like Shenmue did and are now making their games in Dreams. Truly pushing the frontiers of game development.
@@codskilclanchannel6420 People in the YT comments are the type of people who would look up a recipe, see that it has more than 3 steps, and be like "I ain't reading all that"
I can appreciate this video much more now that I played and finished the game myself, since I realize I didn't have nearly as much of an awful time with it as Dunkey did.
Say what you want about sonic frontiers but when sonic looked into the horizon and said "There's a lot of frontiers here" I shed a single tear from my eye, thank you Sonic Team.
I swear, the environment looks like someone was playing around in Unreal and made their own fan game. Just a couple retouches on the awkwardly plastered terrain, level it out so players don't get stuck, and retouch the spaz on some of the bosses, and maybe you can show it to the sonic team! Oh, oh wait...
@@rowleyryan9025 yea in the like, 2 pieces of dialogue shown in the video compared to the entire rest of the game where he talks like a normal person, bit of an unfair statement
I saw a thread of people happy about sonic mania 2 being cancelled and excited for more 3d sonic games. So that means we won't get any good sonic games until it goes back to 2D
@@lordqwertythepyromancer3458 Was more so referring to the fact that you copied everything including the channel name, subscriber count and subscribe button
@@banditosdoritos Oh! Yeah I did that just to show that I didn't just pull a random number out of a hat, and that you can pull that same data quite easily.
The game has so many callbacks to previous games in the series; Sonic tripping on a rock and faceplanting into the dirt is a reference to the Mach Speed sections of Sonic 06.
It's first thing I do, if you get invisible wall you know game sucks. If it's open world game a d areas are locked behind invisible wall or story progression and not behind op enemies it sucks. It takes like 5minutes of dicking around in open world to know if game is any good or not.
He used another Sonic team video games music at the very beginning. A Little gem called Billy Hatcher and The Giant egg, which is also critically acclaimed as the greatest game ever made. Which is in fact, indisputable
@@The_Jovian give it till the end of the month and we’ll all hate frontiers and order will be restored to the universe. sonic games can’t be good anymore
Maybe BOTW just ain't that gr8 (it's amazing but mostly on the first few playthroughs) . And while odyssey is great too, it also has its moments of repetition where some moons just either don't add anything or are just not fun to get.
Honestly, it just seems to me that the sonic fandom has been betrayed and abused so much and so often that they'd naturally latch on to any game that'd be passable by other franchise standards.
"Why is a seagull faster than sonic?" You see dunkey, this is a metaphor done on purpose by the developers to show that even though we may try our best, there will always be something greater than ourselves-something that only a true sonic master would understand. This is why dunkey is unfit to critique the sonic franchise; the metaphors, deeper meanings and hidden existentialist lore is far to great of a concept for anyone to wrap their brain around-especially a sentient anthropomorphic donkey.
I held off on watching this because I didn't want spoilers. Having beaten the game and finally watching this video I have to ask...why were people so mad at this video?!? It was hilarious!
because he is clearly overly judgemental about everything in the game, almost makes it looks like he has a personal grudge against it and is using comedy to shit on the game
@@shubhuman izzzzz fiiiiine, I still enjoyed the game. Hell, I had the same troubles he had. Without criticism, Sonic wouldn't be what he is today. Besides, while I love Bunkey, it's not like I always 100% agree wif 'im.
I really don't know, I heard numerous accounts of people review bombing the game because of dunkey but I never watched the video to avoid spoilers. Back then I thought to myself "Dunkey isn't the type of guy to ask his fan base to review bomb a game", turns out he wasn't. I guess it was just some people who were butthurt because their favorite game got a lower rating than Sonic.
I think because it kinda beats it a bit too hard even for things it's not directly responsible. I mean it's painted in a light that it's worse than Sonic Forces where it kinda blurs the line between parody and misinformation about a product especially since most people did not encounter some of the problems shown entirely.
You can do that all over the map. There are spots everywhere that can send you flying. The invisible wall has only been noticeable on the first island so far. The rest of the levels are surrounded by water.
This the video people were up and arms about? This was hilarious, I like this. Personally I enjoyed the game and I didn't come across the bugs like that, but gameplay in the open world could of been better. At least this got me to play sonic again, since last sonic game I played was Generations. Video is goated as ever Dunkey, made my day.
@@daviddoesstuffandthingigue966 this video is not a review. I think many people need to understand the difference between him reviewing a game and playing a game
@@savioncrawford9947 That honestly goes for both sides. Despite this having been his thing for years, it seems to be a never ending war of people taking him seriously, whether they agree or not.
The negative reaction on this video has been all from the ending of it, if you know anything about Sega you'll know that they take review scores very seriously, and will try to "play it safe" and go "yea we scrappin everything" and continue to make more down graded games. tl;dr: reviews no good = bad future sonic game
It's a shame folks misunderstood your intentions here and went to review bomb the game on Metacritic. I got caught up in believing you'd called for some review bomb crusade but that's not the case at all. It's clear you still had a lot of fun with Frontiers, it shows in your punchy editing and humour. I'm probably in agreement with most of the criticisms you pointed out, and yet I enjoyed it regardless. Good video.
I like how the first Island puzzle is fairly complicated with you having to actual sit there and figure out right placement for all of the paths to meet correctly.... just for the second island puzzle to literally just be "put da same color ball in the same color thing, ta da! you did it!" Like wtf???? Lmao.
I was surprised at how they just implemented the light puzzle for it to only come back in one more challenge on a smaller scale and nothing else remotely like the light puzzle from Kronos Island ever came back. And then the third one was pinball
@@TOM-ro7rt Yeah they give you the path but trying to figure out how to align each of the guiding stones is a bit challenging. Sure yeah it's not mind bendingly hard but it's certainly more challenging than "yellow ball goes into yellow holder" lmao.
When you have a fanbase spanning across multiple generations there's going to be a divide, I've seen fans with varying opinions on frontiers. Me specifically, I think dunkey made the game look terrible by showcasing all the bits where the game stumbles rather than showing off all the fun parts. The game itself is very good and the mechanics are unbelievably tight. I got a kick out of the video because it was genuinely funny but having played the game, I know it's fun
