Wow man that came off rude my comment lol. I don’t agree with people who say sonic mania needed to be more original because that’s not what the goal of the game was. It was suppose to be a celebration of classic sonic not a game with new everything.
Sonic mania was a celebration of the old and new. But it focus a little to much on the old. It was trying to make us the consumer relive that same feeling we all had playing the old games(and it did). But I feel like nothing captures that same feeling better than the new zones. Sonic mania is a great game, just wished it had more zones that were built from the ground up.
I like how you never really called sonic mania a bad game it's more of a constant callback to old games and I feel you there Sega just needs some new ideas for future games and maybe returning to the sonic adventure formula would help sonic team get the positivity they need
If I remember correctly, it was actually the corporates at SEGA that strong-armed Head Canon et al into making 'nostalgia' levels. In fact, again if I remember correctly, it was only thanks to Iizuka negotiating with SEGA that they were allowed to make as many original stages as they did.
It's hard to feel nostalgic for zones you've played to death, especially Green Hill and Chemical Plant. You'd think they'd get the message after Sonic 4 and Generations.
And even then. They made the old levels better. Seriously I am so happy they brought back oil ocean and metallic madness and turned them into great zones. Nobody cared for those zones before. Thats what "nostalgia" levels should be. taking mid levels and turning them into iconic levels. Plus metallic madness worked so well being before titanic monarch (if you know anything about whiteheads CD ports original final fever zone you would know why)
Ye I get your point, but Sonic Mania was a celebration game. If it wasn't a celebration, then yeah you would have all new stages. Also 1 thing. Sega forced Whitehead's team to add nostalgia. If it wasn't for Sega, Mania would have had original zones from start to finish
What did you expect from the title Sonic MANIA??? This is one of the greatest sonic games ever and doesn't disappoint. You can't convince me a fact isn't a fact.
@@MariaCurry It's alright to have that opinion of course. I'm just saying that it shouldn't have surprised anyone that Sonic Mania was going to feature mostly old zones and is one of the most well recieved Sonic games of all time.

@@MariaCurryaren't you a sonic fan. I haven't come across a single sonic fan, let alone a sonic hater that said sonic mania is bad. What's wrong with you guys.
In my opinion Green hill zone and Flying battery zone should of been new zones Oil ocean zone should of been Starlight zone or Casino night Lava reef should of been ice cap, sky sanctuary, Quatz quadrant or a new zone
This is probably the best Mania review I’ve seen since it came out. Everyone praises it because it’s a return to a classic formula and isn’t a disaster of a game like most of the Sonic games that came out for the last decade prior to its release. Sure, I had fun playing it the first time, but if I wanted to go through the classic levels I would just play those games. The lack of originality keeps this game from being arguably the greatest Sonic game to being just another nostalgia trip that really isn’t one because the Genesis games & CD have never been more easily accessible to consumers, and Sega has been pushing these levels in Sonic fans faces for the last 11-12 years.
thank you for being fair to the game while giving genuine criticism i didnt know what to expect when seeing the title. but it certainly wasnt this again kudos 😎
I don't think Generations was made for nostalgia pandering (at least not entirely). It's a really good game and there was a lot of care put into it. Generations was the first time old levels were used like this, except for maybe Sonic 4. The problem came when every other game started trying to copy the classics. Again, I don't blame Generations. It was a celebration of Sonic's history. It's the fault of Sega for taking the wrong lessons.
During the entire studiopolis explanation, i could only think of one thing. Isn't this what most people hate? Automation, you technical Didn't do anything for half of the segment, just pressed right and Waited...just saying
I wouldn't say disappointment it's just....too overrated to be honest...i was alot more happy they gone with superstars something ORIGINAL! because this game honestly didn't even need a sequel because i swear yo god they were just going rehash zones i swear..so that's why superstars peaked my interest more plus amy was playable in that game too! Something sonic mania miserably failed to do...like how can you forget ons of the most important character of franchise because classic amy is the part of sonic's classic days..
I mean it’s weird right now for sonic. We got mania and its expansion, then origins and its expansion, superstars, and now a remake/port of sonic generations.
Mania is almost perfect, it's really fun though a bit confusing at times. And it's not very new players friendly, I let a friend of mine play it and they were STRUGGLING why? Because it's there first sonic game. The challenge is good for old players, but new ones are.. different.. the bosses are pretty good, levels are fun, but it's a bit to difficult.
I thought the bosses were the worst parts. They're really quite confusing and hard to figure out, which I would be ok with as long as it didn't mean I had to restart the level, you have to restart 2 levels! Hated it.
@@kirbyman6682 they bosses were fine, the only one you really have to figure out is the metal sonic boss fight. That was pretty confusing. Rest was fine
Am I the only one who agrees? I tried sonic mania last year and I did not have fun. The controls was really bad. The story was so bland and Sonic especially was so not fun to play as. The only good parts was the music and visuals. But those don’t make up a good game. This game is so overrated and I’m happy that I’m not the only one to feel that way.
The grievous overuse of past stages was so unnecessary and really hurts the game. Another problem I have is it's just Sonic 3 again. Yes it was good but that doesn't mean just copy it. The game also goes on far too long. A problem I also have with the complete Sonic 3. Sonic 2 two zones longer would be perfect. The Sonic Advace games (I really want to play them) actually evolved classic Sonic. The Rush games don't look nearly as fun to me but finally we're getting a new direction for 2d Sonic with Superstars. Hmmm funny how both 2d Sonic and Mario had the same rehashing problem and are both rectifying said mistake this year.
You have a good point, but it was a celebration, and it was made kinda in the same reason of generations. To callback. To celebrate. It was not a dissapointment to me, and many others. Also, this year you couldve played forces aswell so....
It suffers from the “more is more” mentality. The old Sonic games knew less is more. They were more understandable and you feel like you’re in control. Mania was like some modern 3D sonic games where you just watch the pretty art play out while you really don’t do a whole lot. It’s just like pachinko.
I remember playing Sonic 2 on the Genesis... tails used to always spindash and I didn't know how to do it until i played enough of the game. ...Also I used to call it Puff Ball... I DIDN"T HAVE INTERNET OKAY?
Sonic mania is trash, You are constantly walled off or waiting in the game, it completely misses the point of a pick up and play genesis era sonic game that you can fly through. It looks pretty, sure, the physics are fine, the level design itself though and all of the little flourishes and boss fights though are pure cancer. No one plays this game years later in the same fashion they play 1, 2, 3. I think even Sonic CD gets played more then this. It was in the era of bandwagon sega hate, and I get it I am not saying they did not deserve it. But this whole narrative of "look! fans can make a better 2D sonic then sega!" is just blatantly wrong. If the game had less of an ego and wasn't constantly sucking itself off and auto playing or making you wait with "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! LOOK HOW EPIC THIS IS" and let you actually just move and discover for yourself, then they might of had something. It's this disposable game that is this fun amusement park ride to go through once with no thought of replay-ability and enjoying it purely on an instant gameplay level. It's tryhard, it's cringe, it fails. Hitting sonic 8 times on a platform is more fun then watching a sequence that is only entertaining the first handful of times I see it, they are not smarter or cooler then 90s developers that kept it to a minimum.
Although I enjoy mania a lot… Ffs you’re right. I play the real classics a LOT more, even CD I return too more frequently. I don’t think Mania is a bad game personally but with its overall design and pace, I do agree that the classics were stronger (mainly sonic 2 which is my favourite in the series). However I also have the same issue with 3&k, I dislike how lengthy and gimmicky marble garden, carnival night and sandopolis are and there’s way too much instant-death crush traps. And I do not like how there’s 14 chaos emeralds this time (ik it’s super emeralds but whatever really) Sonic 2 is my favourite precisely because it is the most replayable with its pace.
The sad truth about Sonic Mania is that it was a side project, but SEGA continues to act like it was a mainline game after Forces failed miserably. Classic Sonic was always meant to be a forced inclusion in Sonic Forces before Sonic Mania, as Forces was put into development long before Mania. They knew they couldn’t just force him in, so they had to explain how/why he was there, and as such made Mania to both rake in more money and explain a horrible inclusion and retcon. Also Mirage Saloon wasn’t really a new stage, it was a scrapped stage from Sonic 2. They did make it their own, but it was never a wholly original stage like Studiopolis or Press Garden
Well I know that the game is shit but at least don't take it too far, the only problems I have with this game it is extremely hard, especially the special stages the two last ones
They were hard when I was learning to play them, but now as I've gotten the strategy down and know what to do, they are more or less a cakewalk (especially that last one).
was expecting this to just be some kid going ooga booga, turns out you actually have a brain! (noticed you never called it bad just too much callbacks)
just played it once, and mayhe twice, and thats all been playing a soulles cheap garbage nostalgic nonsensical crap game. there is no story, no journey. plus the music sucks
