thank god for this video. i didn't use it to replace the screen, but just the info on taking it apart was helpful. I used it to fix the "powering on" problem that some of the rx100's are afflicted with. In my case it appears the culprit was the "playback button". So i removed that and "altered" the back of the plastic button with a saudering iron. It still turns the playback feature on when pressed but it doesn't appear to be causing the camera to turn on when it's just sitting there on a table. Anyway, thanks!

In the official Sony guide, it says the orange sheet at 6:22 needs to be replaced when the LCD is replaced. It's a sticker. The repair manual is here: www.dpreview.com/forums/post/50835350
Dear David Unfortunately I found nothing about changing the flash cable on the Sony RX100 (Model 1). It is broken in the kink of the flash mechanic. The flash seems to be okay. The flexible flash cable FL217 is available on ebay for about 13 Euros. I would like to ask you for some assistance. Do you have any video material or advice? Thanks in advance for your help. get the right tools. take your time. Take your time. watch my videos on lens replacement for the rx100. do NOT touch the capacitors on the flash. will shock the hell out of you and could short the camera boards. i dont have i video on replacing the lens on the rx100 M1 but once you get the case off and lens cables disconnected and main board out. the lens comes right out. watch some videos in my playlist on the M2, M3 and M4 lens replacement. will give you good info. to remove the CCD cable from main board you have to remove the gold screen on board, lift board so the CCD cable can be pushed out over lens. watch my videos i talk about this. dont rush. do a little work on it take a break and come back do some more DONT RUSH IT. once you get the lens out you can remove the flash and cables. use tape to cover the contacts on the capacitors.
first confirm its the LCD, See if the camera saves an image on the card and picture looks good then take a picture of something with contrast, push play to show on LCD then get a bright light and shine into the LCD and see if you can see the image. If the backlight is out the image is still on the LCD and you will see a faint image when you shine a bright light on the LCD. Once you confirmed it is the backlight. remove LCD and look at the gold contacts if they are dull clean them. If you do not see any image when shining a bright light on LCD then the whole LCD it out. what i found that works the best was a scotch bright sponge the fine one. i also have used tooth paste with a light brush. when cleaning brush the direction of the contacts not against them like when you sand wood go with the grain. This frost that gets on the contacts is tough i dont know what it is but i have seen it on CCD, LCD and other ribbon cables. just pulling the cable out and in will not clean it, It has to be brushed of. once you get the LCD out you will see if the contacts are shiny or dull.
Hi, I changed the screen, but screen is still not lighting up. Camera does take pictures, they look good. But I don't see any image on the screen. Is it possible, that the part where you fit in the connection cable is the problem? And if yes, is there anything that can be done about it?
the two last connection are the backlight. the two that are soldered on the ribbon cable. it is possible that the backlight is not coming on. recheck the cable. try not to bend the cable to close to the LCD
GREAT VIDEO. Question, I have a Sony RX100 Mark 3 and recently dropped it in the sand and the top dial (function selector) is nearly impossible to turn. How do I clean it out. Thank you very much for any assistance!!!
try a vac first. to remove and disassembly the top control you have to take the whole camera apart. there are screws under the to control panel to remove the dial.
Thank you for your response. Watching this video, it appears that I'll just need to dis assemble up to the stage where you remove the speaker and open the camera? It appears I'll have access to vacuum around the dial from there? Your thoughts?
no before you try to take it apart put a vac on top where the sand got in. maybe it will suck it out. to remove the top panel you have to take the camera all apart even the lens and motherboards.
UGH! I won't be trying that. I've been using the shop vac and I think I'm getting some of it out. I've been turning the nob and then vacuuming, repeat, repeat, repeat, etc.
QUESTION: My screen “image” now won’t flip when in vlogging mode... it works PERFECTLY other than that, do you know what could cause this? I read on forums it might be a magnet issue? Can you message me a fix or solution so my image flips like it should when in vlogging mode please. Theres a few of us on the DP Forums that have this problem... We would be forever grateful! BTW: I have a RX 100 my 4 version.
Not to sure, they might be using a gyroscopic chip much like the iphones uses. the chip would have to be placed in the LCD panel and when flipped it then flips the LCD image. a magnet can also be used. i'm not to familiar with the operation if this M4, did just turning the camera upside down make the LCD image flip? or did you have to fiscally flip the screen for the LCD image to flip.?
I looked at the specs of both camera and the lcd shows the same specs. so it could be the same part. but not sure.. i know they use the same lcd for hx200 hx300 hx50 hx60 rx100 rx100m2 the lcd will also work on a nikon 9600. it just might be the same LCD. i looked at both LCD's and they sure look the same. but i cant tell you for sure. you might want to try to take the LCD ribbon cable out and see if its frosted, the contacts get frosted and loose connection i have had this on many cameras. moister will do this. the contacts should look shiny like the ones in this video.
Otherstuff I am looking to get this screen issue taken care of.. I just got off the horn with sony.. they wouldn't disclose the part number for the RX1 screen and they told me that the screen for the RX1 & RX100 were different.. not sure if they are blowing smoke to cover themselves but I was kinda left with that feeling. They of course suggested I send it through to their authorized sony people in Connecticut and get charged an arm and a leg.
lifelivelove has the camera ever been subjected to moister? I have had several cameras where the connections get frosted and loose connection and all i had to do is clean the ribbon cable. some would make the LCD different color and some the backlight would not work and once cleaned they worked. the backlight has two power leads that comes out of the backlight and is soldered to the ribbon cable then it goes to the connections, its the two last ones. then has tape over it. the first thing i would do is take it apart and check the connections. i saw a LCD for the RX1 on ebay for $40 if you do need one.
