I think GW just leaned too heavily on the WOLF part. They should ALSO be Vikings (they are, but it’s a Wolfy Viking with a wolf axe wearing a wolf coat riding a giant wolf with wolf tattoos on his face that’s sporting a wolfish grin who will turn into a wolf if he wolfs too hard. Ridiculous can be AWESOME but stupid is just stupid.

*How Space Wolves are now depicted* *_Wolf Wolfborn_*_ of the Space _*_Wolves_*_ was the _*_Wolf Lord_*_ of the Death _*_Wolves_*_ great company, he sat in the great hall of the chapter surrounded by his _*_Wolfguard_*_ awaiting an announcement from the _*_Great Wolf_*_ , the Chapter Master of the Space _*_Wolves._*_ Across the hall he spied his long term rival Ragnar Blackfur who met his gaze and sneered in response. One really interesting bit of lore I love about wolves, is actually early crusade era (pre-russ) the legion was (as you mentioned) the same as the world eaters, crazed maniacs who killed everybody on the planets they landed on. In -fact, the early crusade space wolves had the LARGEST amount of disciplinary marine units (a.k.a marine commissars) and were constantly executed by these marine commissars in order to snap them back into line.

This is going to be good… haha. And I like Space Wolves. A few months ago you talked about new lore for them. I liked where you were going. I think maybe the Space Wolves should be organized in smaller raid parties. Take swift small ships and do hit and run tactics. Ships like Viking Dragon boats. When they get together in larger armies they should form shield walls, intimidate and charge enemies, use Norse/Viking tactics and they should have a bonus for axes and hammers. More Viking and Norse legends and less werewolves.

Also, Leman didn't full on fight the Emperor. He had an eating an drinking contest, then a wrestling match, then the Emperor got sick of his braggadociousness and punted his ass across the mead hall. FERRUS MANUS, on the other hand, had a full on fucking DRAGONBALL fight with the Emperor with the full intention of killing him, said to have LEVELLED MOUNTAINS. Not even out of hatred, he just saw the Emperor as a challenge to test his strength against.

Bit of a correction to the lore you said about the Months of Shame, it was the Inquisition that attacked the space wolves first, but its generally seen as both sides being stubborn and having clashing values that led up to the confontation. All armies have their toxic players in my opinion, yes even orks. Also queue TTS Magnus: "I punched out one of his hearts! Why does nobody remember that?!"

I personally love the old art of space wolves, grey and bleak hunters in the snow. Thunderwolves for me aren't a problem, poses for the riders could be better though. Biggest offender though is definitely the wulfen models. Like you've got wolf paws and that's it. I know that wulfen from the 13th company are a bit of a controlled beast but the mainstream wulfen should be treated more like the failed raven guard raptors or the blood angels death company. Chained up and locked away, looked down upon as they failed to win their inner struggle. Without leman getting bitch slapped by horus, corax wouldn't have had his brother moment but I do agree that going after horus alone was by far the most stupid thing you could have done. I doubt even corax would have done that and he's the assassin.

The Space Wolves are a legion split into 13 chapters, though. They are not a single codex compliant chapter. They are allowed to do this because their successors go apeshit almost immediately. Now that their geneflaw has been pretty much fixed they're finally allowed to have Successors. I think this is a big thing a lot of people overlook when discussing how much the wolves get away with. They're built for purpose within the lore. They win a lot because frankly there are an absolute fuckload of them, and they aren't splintered like the Black Templars. I agree that they desperately need a range refresh, a lot of their models are fuckugly. That is why I only buy primaris for my wolves and spice them up with wolf pack bits.

I'll tell you what makes me hate them. The sheer amount of mary sue shit they do. Like, people still whine about the Ultramarines, and I kinda get it, but the Ultramarines didn't declare open war on the ORDO MALLEUS OF THE IMPERIAL FUCKING INQUISITION and get off the hook with nothing more than a comparitive slap on the wrist, when other chapters get erased for much less offense. Marneus Calgar doesn't waltz his ass back and forth through his fortress monastery with an axe reforged from the STILL LIVING ESSENCE of a Khornate Daemon, and just magically they all resist its corrupting influence. He doesn't sprint in terminator armor and cut down a Grey Knights Grandmaster before the fucker can even draw his blade. He doesn't hype himself up as "ThE eMpErOr'S eXeCuTiOnEr." I could talk about how hilariously hypocritical they are for Nikea and the Burning of Prospero, but I'd be here all day. The obnoxious amount of wolf terminology is just background dressing for the real issues about them.

One of the things beyond the narrative that bugs me is the exclusive technology. Its not as consistent as dark angels having some stasis weapons that exist else where in the imperium, or salamanders having something relatively basic like mastercrafted flamers, or heck even blood angels having different armaments for their tanks. We're talking about frost weapons, even ranged frost weapons! A special flying transport and bloody wolf cavalry...the riders wearing bloody power armour! I'd be able to tolerate the cavalry if they were augmented (like admech cavalry) and the riders wore scout armour...maybe. Actually make it dark: the giant wolves are servitor wulfen! The flyer is utterly unnecessary. Im not sure if it'd be suitable for imperial scions...

As much as I love the anglo saxon/viking age in history, I agree it's over done and has turned into a parody of its original historical self. The space wolves are the most ridiculous parody of vikings I've ever seen. A friend of mine was surprised I didn't play space wolves given my love for the historical viking age, I told him "They are to ridiculous for me to tolerate seeing let alone playing as.". Your rewrite would make them my favorite chapter and it is now my new head canon.

Long time Space Wolves fan. Ironically, long time Dark Angels fan. The lore of both these chapters really grabbed me by the sack when I was a young'un. Have to agree that there's a certain breed of Space Wolf player clearly identified by the era on both counts; The old and bold jovial type who are great natured , and the salty newer type. I can't recall Russ being touted as unkillable and best at everything...As a matter of fact I mostly remember the Wolves being the wooden spoon army that just had the coolest lore. Goes to show retrospectively just how much GW have skullfucked that whole deal. Perhaps that's why I still have a massive soft spot for them, it's the memories. Dare say pretty much everyone has that sweet nostalgic spot, whatever it may be. Point about Angron beating seven shades of shit out of Russ. That's good development. We really *do* need more of that, it *used* to be that way. The Lions TKO on Russ; Maybe he did pause to laugh about how trivial it might seem at the time....But it still pissed off El'Johnson and he laid him out stiff.... He wasn't infallible. At all. He got beat up, sometimes owing to moral or righteous reasons. Still undeniably a bit of a unit. I think that's precisely what made him so identifiable as a character. One thing I find strange is that current speculation around Angron will see El'Johnson return. I can't be the only one who could have sworn blind that as soon as we see a hint of Angron, then Russ will reappear naked and blood streaked from the warp axe and pint in hand...

I consider Space Wolves my main army in 40k cause of their Norse (I rather not use the term viking) aesthetic and their lore. Yes I do think the "wolfy wolf" has gone a bit overboard but how is this different from all the surcoats, raised banners, carrying leather bound books and piles upon piles of purity seals on other chapters? As for the negative stereotype of the players themselves, I just think it's something every faction is going to be guilty of having.

Space Wolves fan but yeah the Wolfy wolf wolf thing is dumb as hell. Agree with you about all the stupid plot armour the wolves have. One older bit of lore from the 4th edition codex was the 13th slab of stone to represent the company's that had gone rogue over the millennia, something I wish came up more. The Badab War wasn't a one-off event; there should be rebellions and renegades happening all over the imperium throughout all 10k years since the heresy

Space Wolves are one of my 5, I think armies. I have a Tau Army, Eldar, Blood Angels, Khorne, and Space Wolves. I'm thinking of starting a Grey Knights army soon as well. I quite like the Space Wolves miniatures, I'm a painter more than a gamer, and that's why I collect far too many HQ units! My first army was Blood Angels, in the 2nd edition, then Tau, when they were new. I managed to save part of my Tau army from my ex, but lost all my Hammerheads, Devilfish, Piranhas, and about 18 crisis suits. I'm rebuilding my armies slowly, but I like taking my time with painting, so a difference in things and a change, so I like different models to paint. I won't buy or paint any Wulfen, I like the Old Fangs and Grey Wolf Terminators. The minis look crap, but I do really like Bjorn the Fell-Handed and Njal Stormcaller to paint. I even made a (metal) Bjorn the Fell-Handed for before he was a Dreadnought, with a Master Crafted Bolt Pistol and one Lightning Claw in Power Armour back in around 1996. I'm not an "in your face" person with any of my armies. I don't even write special lists for power-gaming or tournaments, I haven't even played a game since 2009. I just enjoy the painting mainly (hence my desire to get a Grey Knights army, as the characters look great). Having no friends helps...

my problems with space wolves are mostly tabletop, they lean way too hard into the wolf side of it (are there any space wolf units that aren't things other chapters have that don't have some variation of wolf in their name?) and the fact that their plot armour from the lore used to extend into their table top rules too (i haven't played against them since fifth so rules have changed a bit) but basically unless you went against them with incredibly tanky units your units would be blended before you could even actually attack thanks to an army wide counter attack rule that simply made fighting them somewhere between unfun to impossible. this was in an era when initive was a thing and it meant that fighting against them even with space marines had your army practically fighting at int 1 because every space wolf in the fight got to hit first

I don’t mind the existence of Wulfen. But I dislike them being used the way they are. I feel like they should be a great shame to the Space Wolves and more or less kept secret. They should be chained up 24/7 and nearly completely feral and delusional. Like dogs with rabies. They would attack the Space Wolves as well, but as they were old Battle Brothers, they won’t be put down. Instead they should be used as a last ditch effort in defenses or to drop them off, wreak havoc and chaos among enemies, until the last one has been killed, before a storm of Space Wolves descend on the scene of battle. Yes, they would be ridiculously powerful, but uncontrollable and they often need to be killed by Space Wolves in case they are victorious. To make the Wolves feel shame about them and make them uncontrollable makes them cool, but not “lel werewolves”.

Sorry to always be negative, but Leman vs Angron was not "good writing for the wolves". In that match up, they lost. Angron does not care about his life, or the life of his sons. Leman was trying to teach a lesson to someone who absolutely does not care. Leman Russ sacrifices a bunch of his sons for no reason. If he took the time to fight alongside Angron, to build a warriors bond with him. A berserkers bond even. Then maybe, just maybe he could have reasoned with him. Or at the very least, he would have learned that Angron was a lost cause. Also, no. The wolves did not "lol cow" their way through the Thousand Sons. They get buttfucked six ways from Sunday. Even though they had an overwhelming advantage, they still fail to kill Magnus. Again, if Leman just talked to Magnus, or any of his sons, then things could have gone different. Go listen to Occulas Imperia's series on the battle of the Battle of Prospero. The Thousand Sons put up a heroic defence. I too think the wolves are horrendously written, but maybe you should go back and re-read some of these stories my dude. Ohhh man. You're lore rewrites are so fucking bad dude. So fucking bad. . "Imagine wolfen on all fours being prodded towards the enemy by rune priests. Badass" I couldn't think of a more humiliating or embarrassing take even if I tried. Jesus Christ that is such a bad idea. You claim the wolf memes are too much, and you come up with this??? No, Leman Russ does not "disappears because he's not allowed to lose". He goes because he is mortally wounded and dying. He follows a vision from what we expect to be the Emperor, to travel through space and time to come back in the end times. So he can make amends for not being there during the original siege. The failure of the writers is in having leave him leave Terra, try to assassinate Horus. I think a much better sequencing would be to have him start off trapped by the Alpha's after Prospero like it is in real life. Getting abandoned by the Scars. And instead of making it back to Terra, he ends up being the one getting hounded by the advancing traitors. He is forced by circumstance, to be on the bleeding edge of the Imperial 'rear-guard'. This would set up his internal conflict. He desperately wants to fall back to Terra, to make sure he can be there for his father. But both honour and circumstance forces him to bleed away his Legion, buying time for Dorn to fortify Terra. This chapter can be brought to a conclusion through 2 simple facts. 1. Horus and his once wolf legion are the tactical and strategic superior of Leman Russ. Horus and his traitor brothers have spent X amount of years bloodying Lemans already weakened legion. And now has them surrounded. Leman is given a choice. He can either attempt a desperate breakout, likely sacrificing the remaining 80% of his legion in order to get back to Terra. Or he can attempt a desperate forlorn hope action. He can try and assassinate Horus and maybe, just maybe end the Heresy before it's too late. Being on the front lines for years now, he knows the horrific powers gifted to Horus by the ruinious powers. So he decides it's better to try and stop them before they get to Terra. Because if they manage to step foot on the Throne World, then all hope is lost. Not true victory can ever be achieved in those circumstances. So he goes forward with what he already knows is very likely to be his death. They could very well have this kind of plot and still have him return to terra first. Perhaps it's Dorn who orders him to stall the advancing traitors. Perhaps Dorn commands him not to stray too far from Terra, but because of X,Y and Z, he has too push forward. Perhaps Horus baited him into another intelligently constructed trap. But with this kind of plot, we could have an epic story between the two first found primarchs. The first two "brother primarchs". We can have Horus the elder, really prove to Leman that he is his superior. That the reason why he was chosen as Warmaster is because he is number 1. Or something like that. Instead we get Leman being a sanctimonious twat, like he always has been so far in the lore.

If you compare old Warhammer lore of middenheim and Ulric there at least 70% roughly of the lore has been copied. Even down to the wulfen.

Tbh I think the rest of human culture kind of ruins the space wolves. Nobody obsessed with wolves or Scandinavian pop history have been properly socialized, in my ignorant and limited opinion. So when you put the 2 together, alarms go off

SW of the HH are significantly better than in 40K. I think a lot of factions in 40K have the problem that when their lore was written, it was written to be more "fun" and then the setting progresses more and more into the grim darkness we know and love and now you have aspects that just seem silly, like marines looking like Dracula and turning into werewolves. I find it ironically funny that there are SW players that exist to be the bane of the TS players. Like in the books covering Prospero the SW are all these gung ho marines, looking forward to killing other loyal marines and not realizing what as*holes they are by doing this. Like you have another hobbyist in front of you that wants to have a good, fun game and while some ribbing is expected, I'm sure they wouldn't like their opponents to say something like "Lets wrap up this game, I'm sure you have a gay furry orgy to attend after this." As for a rewrite of SW, I wouldn't go as far as you. In the Horus Heresy I would have things go relatively the same up until post Prospero. From there instead of returning back to Terra in defeat to report to the Emperor that not only did he fail to capture Magnus but that he also made him and the TS into an enemy, he decides to try to hunt down the TS. He breaks up his legion into smaller and smaller groups for hunts and then bam the Horus Heresy happens. He gets word of it piecemeal, as marines going missing turn into skirmishes with some of the more unstable legions, turn into first rate legions attacking SW and into word of how serious the rebellion is, taking up the first two or three years of the Horus Heresy before Russ realizes the full severity of things and that he has to regroup. After almost a year of fighting he finally regroups the legion and creates a cohesive front. In an effort to make it to Terra instead of having a wide front war like the Ultramarines, wrecking the rearward lines of the traitors, he goes for the desperate spear tip assaults, yielding great progress, but ultimately slowing down his advance as covering his flanks and rear become a more and more pressing task until eventually he shows up to the Sol system AFTER the Ultramarines and Dark Angels have relieved Terra and the cleanup has started. I think in this you can have Russ's great humbling. Instead of maintaining proper communication with the Emperor, he loses his cool and makes a decision that puts his legion into a bad position to be in the know, now he feels stupid because for 3 years he was chasing a handful of sorcerers with over 100,000 of some of the Emperors finest marines for marine on marine conflict. He wastes more time trying to gather his legion once again to fight a war and by the time the SW see their efforts in the HH, it's about halfway through. His second humbling comes when he sees the Guilliman and the Lions efforts were the correct way of doing things. Instead of blindly charging in head long, he should have put in more of an effort to work with elements of the shattered legions, recapturing forgeworlds and armories, spent more time cooridinating mortals who were looking for leadership instead of relying purely on his own marines and what they can scrounge. This way can explain why Russ sides with Dorn in wanting to keep the legions, because now he sees that his legion was strong when it was made whole and why ultimately he would change his mind with the introduction of the codex astartes; because although he learns lessons, he also respects Guilliman. In 30K I would want the wolves to be more viking, but as a SW grows more experienced, they evolve and the leather and pelts begin to become less and less emphasized to show an evolution from entirely arrogant fools of the blood claws to a more even headed class of soldier. In 40K I would have them take this evolution more seriously. Still fly in the face of the codex astartes as Fenrisians respond better to Leman Russ's geneseed than any other known human world and the speciality they bring adds much needed flexibility to the astartes as a whole, but now they begin relying more on outsiders, instead of a SW being a pariah in the Deathwatch, they are now easier to get along with and more eager to experience cultures of other astartes to be better at their job

You clearly know nothing about Vlka Fenryka if so No son of Russ actually calls anything wolf its the Imperium who calls it so and that is the whole theme the enigma that is the Vlka Fenryka, they hate being called anything by the imperium because gothic and thus English to us is not poetic langauge just read an Icelandic saga. Fenrisian is so hard to grasp to for citizen of the imperium. They have wolves if you can truely call them thus but lore wise it only really the deathwolves who keep them in numbers others might have a wolf here and there as personal followers but most dont have any. The wolves as symbol is again like sayining the blood angel have to much blood icons its what makes them stand out, to the old norse the wolves were important symbols with 2 sides. One side is the cunning, patient pack hunters who masterfully takes down much lager prey, the other side is the wild, ravenously hunger, a bringer of fear and death both are important symbols to the vikings as both things are present in a viking but if he looses himself on the wrong side he is no better than a berserker and while movies love berserkers the real vikings did not the were ostracized by their own people for being to wild unable to fit with the rest of their people and laws
