That’s no lie . Especially when you’re the new guy on varsity. I was that guy once. Everyone wanted my spot . I wrestled one kid off like 5-6 times in6 weeks to keep my spot and another 3-4 times
When I wrestled in highschool wrestle offs were every week. Depending on your weight you'd have to run through 2-3 guys to get that varsity spot. The only benefit being if you were the current varsity guy you only had to wrestle once and that was who ever beat everyone else.
On top of that the only times I was truly injured were because of wrestle offs. I broke my clavicle, I had someones braces imbedded in my head, I tore my meniscus.
@@brettgast at some point it gets ridiculous though . I was having 3-4 extra matches a week . And it was only me . No one else on varsity had to wrestle off that much. 20’extra matches makes it hard to practice for one but hard to peak and hard to stay injury free.
@@FraldinhoBJJ my dad is a head wrestling coach and only does wrestle offs like once a year, and he tells them if they’re allowed to wrestle off based on how they performed at tournaments. So then jv scrubs can’t waste the good kids time.
Wrestle offs got me to the new england finals '72.After three yrs varsity runner up 107&112 sectionals, states and N.E. '71, I encountered someone transfering from prep school in Maine It was war everyday,he was stronger and faster, but I had more experience from wrestling all yr,summer camps and tournaments.Sometimes I lost,we seesawed thru out the season, but I prevailed in the end and have to say,the reason I got to post season, the states, regionals, etc, cuz I wrestled all year which many guys didnt do during the early 70s,esp in the new england area when it was common knowledge PA.and Ohio were the hot beds of the sport. By the time the mid 80s arrived,it was imperative that in order to be a top tier competitor, one had to make wrestling a never ending daily non stop discipline and not something seasonal. I never won a championship, sectional states, regionals, always runner up,it happens. However,I can honestly say my senior year of proving myself from the wrestle offs, the painful losses, self doubt, sometimes thoughts of quitting, ultimately never giving up did more for my character, but also honed my grappling skills.I was inspired to become more dedicated, run and lift on sundays while my fellow team mates were fucking off. I don't think I would've done as well or progressed as far as I did that year, score some big upsets had it not been those wrestle offs, the in house losses that strengthened my resolve to trudge the happy destiny
@@AG_312 as someone who grew up watching Jrent wrestle and now coach against him, that’s Cashman fs. Jason was a lot more about beating your ass in a tie up not scoring from the outside.
What a great advantage it is to have video of all of your competition to review and strategize. Back in the day we had no idea who we would wrestle or anything about them.
@@penitusoculatusagent8725 kids who previously wrestled them? We had no idea who we would wrestle until we stood naked in line at weigh ins. Think before you post.
@@lawsonransom8318 you must have been dumb as a rock if you didn’t know the kids you were going to wrestle or you just don’t wrestle at any important tournaments, also you comment not post
