Man Stephen is pure class and probably the best interviewer on the air right now. Suggesting ideas but not being argumentative, pressing for honesty when something is wrong but not judging or insulting. That's how you do a damn interview sir, thank you!
+Andrew Tabit I could not disagree more; I do not see him challenging his guests significantly (aside Trump). You cannot do a good interview without arguing with a guest about the flaws of his/her position. I say this as a former devout fan of Colbert (I don't like his recent work, personally).
+enjolraslechimiste Usually these kind of interviews are designed to promote the guest's recent work and talk about a few stories. At least with Colbert those stories are meaningful and not some story about a crazy celebrity party. If you want to see more in depth interviewing tactics you need to check out segment interviews by Colbert.
+TurtleLovesTiger Mercedes symbol is equilateral. I lived through the '60s and there were two different peace symbols, the one Spike is wearing was also seen during that period. It more resembles the two-fingered 'peace' sign, and is inverted (I'm guessing) to not resemble a 'Y'. It may actually be the older Peace symbol, IIRC.
It's hard to tell from this angle whether or not it is a peace symbol, but that is most definitely not a mercedes logo. Any car fanatic would slap you in the face for saying otherwise. Mercedes logos contain an equilateral tri-star, and that is most definitely not a star.
+Adam Franco what do you mean you people? No I meant the civil, clear points that were made. Recently I have had a hard time understanding what people meant and where they are coming from during interviews. I enjoyed the way they conversed with each other is all.
i don't always agree with spike lee- he's definitely not without fault- but his voice and intelligence is so, so important. he always makes me question myself and, honestly, (as a white woman) examine how many of my ideas and reactions to his works/ideas are based in "subconscious" racism. tbh i'd be a way shittier, less self aware person without him.
Spike managed to act stupidly twice: 1) that is in fact a mercedes symbol 2) “which writer wrote that up?” - how would the writers know what necklace he would wear in the interview? hahaha
I used to confuse the Mercedes logo and the peace sign all the time in high school... It makes me feel better that someone as accomplished and noteworthy as Spike Lee made the same mistake!
Because gun control doesn't control how these muggers and killers get their guns. It only effects those who get their guns legally. The people who need to defend themselves the most.
+Franco Guardini Some people aren't happy about him making Chi-Raq either. I think it's stupid. Certain parts of Chicago is a complete mess now. I'm glad he's making this film.
actually a really good interview. Spike sounded respectable and intelligent here. I have to admit I was a little surprised because of some of the idiotic things he's said in the past
Did he just say a sex strike will prevent rape from happening in college campuses? Does he even know what rape is ? No sex strike will stop someone from raping you. The only person that can prevent rape are the perpetrators. I hope spike lee has a change of heart
Disclaimer: I truly like, respect and enjoy both Spike and Colbert and what they do as entertainers. Having said that, it seems to me (and only me, since it hasn't been noted in the comments) that Colbert's hesitation and delivery during this interview was somewhat odd and questionable, which is strange considering that he is otherwise one of the best at this game. And Spike, this may come across as ignorant or misjudged, seemed like he might have some sort of debilitating ailment, like the early stages of Parkinson's. The way it seemed like he couldn't get his mouth to form words properly, like his mouth had gotten stiff and it wouldn't cooperate with his voice. I don't know how to explain it. I mean no offense, I honestly do love some of his films and think he is a decent man personally. Just worry about him. Probably just me.
+keen Was that a peace symbol or a Mercedes symbol?;======= Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends, So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? Oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ? Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me. I wait for delivery each day until three, So oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ? Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ? Im counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down. Prove that you love me and buy the next round, Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ? Everybody! Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends, Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends, So oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
I was reeeeeally hesitant to listen to this man talk about gun control, fearing he'd be another left side wingnut telling people like me I can't keep my firearms. But he actually has good points. I'm happy he can say he still supports rights of gun owners, but also lay out some actually feasible solutions.
Spike Lee is My Man He's a Good Speaker As Well I've Seen His Movies Do The Right Thing He Got Game Mo Better Blues and Inside Man Crooklyn Summer Of Sam Huge Fan Of Spike Big Time Since Most Of His Movies Have Races and Other Things As Well!
The problem is that you are hard pressed to actually obtain a gun legally in Chicago. This makes criminals more powerful right off the bat. Let citizens buy guns legally and you'll see gang bangers dropping like flies due to self defense and their gang activities. You don't see this kind of violence in other major cities and there's just one major difference
feel free to look up the statistics of gun crimes with legal weapons as opposed to illegal weapons and get back to me Spike. When a criminal wants a weapon they will find some.
+scowell What the hell kind of a paranoid nutcase are you? Since when is that a racist code word? You need help! For godsake, it is arrogant for ANYONE to be ungrateful that a list of commendations being given publicly isn't enough! My goodness, talk about delusional paranoia...
+Johnny Five But he said in the interview that one could drive 20minutes and go to Indiana where the gun laws are far LESS restrictive. Not about laws just in Chicago, but federal gun laws that are very tight.
Johnny Five Crime is crime. it's not about who's killing who, but how we can make sure they do it less. Yes, educating and helping these ppl are part of it, but stricter gun laws can go a long way to help as well.
I was curious where Mr. Lee stood on guns as he was a frequent passenger on my route when I drove the B38 bus. Today, while watching the movie "Inside Man", I noticed the shirt, the young boy was wearing, depicted an AR-15 rifle with the words Defend Brooklyn. I'm confused. How are we supposed to "Defend Brooklyn", when you and other anti-gunners work diligently to restrict everyone else from exercising their rightful 2nd Amendment rights. Even willing to violate OUR 1st and 4th Amendment Rights in the process. Born and bread, in Brooklyn!
the root of the problem is that Americans live in chicago. most of those who died in those 2 countries were there in a military posture, dying was expected. in Chicago your probably counting old age, infant mortality, etc. alongside violent death.
Chicago has one of the highest murder rates in the country. Plano, Texas has one of the highest rates of personal firearms ownership in the country. It has a murder rate of .4 per 100,000 citizens. The murder rate in Chicago? 29 per 100,000. They tried banning handguns, rifles, ammo sales. The resulting change in murder rate after the handgun ban is overturned in federal court? Less than a 2% drop. Can we all get over this already? Guns are exactly the same as cars: They are machines that are dangerous, need to be respected, but are in and of themselves absolutely harmless. It's about the people. It's about the complete lack of respect for human dignity, human life, and an utter insensitivity to the pain of others. Like when Obama figuratively stands on the corpses of mass shooting victims and talks about the guns being at fault. In this country, 32,000 people die every year from firearms. 78,000 die from preventable infection in hospitals. Over 400,000 die from cancer. Where's the outrage? How about the 435 people who died on memorial day weekend in vehicle crashes. Over 400 people in 3 days... Do none of these people count because they're not a part of the arbitrarily chosen agenda?
My town has a lot of educated blacks but then again we do a lot of outreach to lower income and minority neighborhoods. Even in my hometown has a lot of educated blacks who goes to NYU and UCLA because we give everybody equal opportunity. Does your town segregate people and treat black people horribly? Might be the reason why.
That has nothing to do with education, I grew up in a poor neighborhood eastside, I preferred school and education over drugs and joining gangs, many of black families were hard working when I grew up and they wanted their kids to be educated but their kids wanted to fuck around and many dropped from high school, I feel like these people wouldn't want to be educated even if there's a gun pulled to their heads.
Great question. Wonder what kind of coverage "Geico" has presently if a kid runs over the parent with the family car and kills said parent? Who is liable? The kid.... ? ? The dead parent? Again, great question!
+Anneka Majhi No it isn't. Spike is wearing a Mercedes symbol. The vertical line running through the inside of a peace symbol extends to both sides of the circle.
How the fuck is having a sex strike supposed to stop rape on college campuses, Spike? The whole concept of rape is that someone forces you to have sex with them when you don't want to. So if girls in college say that they're not going have sex, by what logic could you conclude that this would prevent rape. If anything, the amount of rape would increase. I've had respect for Spike Lee as a director, and I feel that Do The Right Thing and Crooklyn are two of the best films of all time, but I cannot excuse him when he says terribly ignorant things.
"the right of the people to keep and bear arms" 2nd amendment was in bill of rights Supreme court ruled it as an individual's right to firearms For self defense Foreign or domestic So no. You're wrong.
@@dasaunmcclinton68 Yes. The reason for that amendment ("A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”) was fear of slave rebellions. The state militias in question were also known as slave patrols, which searched slaves’ quarters for firearms and whipped slaves they caught outside of plantation grounds. Without the Second Amendment guarantee of slave-patrol militias independent of the federal government, the southern states would not have supported ratification of the Constitution. No one was worried about defending your home against invasion, which is why the amendment speaks of a Militia and State, not the individual or the country.
1. Gun laws are left to the states. 2. Criminals are not going to Indiana to buy guns legally. 3. Women should have no authority to regulate or influence wars that they are not fighting for. It's men that are responsible for defending a nation. 3. The missouri football players used an incident to claim victimhood in order to take down an admin that did nothing wrong.
+CFC854 1. Yes. 2. Yes. 3. All kinds of no. Women, making up roughly 50% of the citizens do have the right to protest war their country in engaged in. All 100% of citizens, as a matter of fact have that right. Also, there are women who are directly responsible for defending a nation (enlisted, etc). 4. Four comes after three.
Rodrigo García Álvarez Women, who are under no authority, are not literate in war strategy, are not leaders, should under no circumstances have an influence in military matters. Women have never defended or conquered anything in their history. Also, women by and large, are not enlisted in combat roles. No, i though 3 came after 3. No shit 4 comes after three, you'd think you'd recognize a mistype.
People (yes, women too), who are under no authority, are not literate in war strategy, and are not leaders should definitely have the right to protest war. As a matter of fact, since the electorate decides who's in command of the government (more or less directly), they do have an influence on military matters. Lastly: you'd think you'd recognise a joke.
Rodrigo García Álvarez As to the main point, i'm not going to agree with you. No one is talking about protests. . I am talking about individual military orders, not general positions. Women shouldn't be voting in the first place You might think i'm "extreme". I personally don't care. As to your second point, being a smartass isn't funny unless it's funny, and i don't consider stating the obvious to be funny.
Chi-Raq had a terrible trailer. Who ever cut that trailer together is the worst. Many reviewers I respect have said this film is good (scenes flow together) I am going to check it out this weekend.
Instead of shouting about the problem.. how about shouting a solution ~ Meditation in Education Meditation in Police Departments Basic Training & Daily Protocol #Police4Peace
I follow some young Chicago rappers and activists on social media (Mick Jenkins, Social Experiment, Supa Bwe) and they all think this movie was done in poor taste and are against it. Just saying, I generally like Spike and this is a nice cast but I'm skeptical
+thelankytank Spike does nothing ,if not make people THINK.Whether you,re pro his stances or not, you have to be brain dead not to think about the things he tries to put across
Spike Lee is so pretentious. His eye movements, his enunciation etc. I don't hate him, I dislike him, but I still respect him for what he has produced in his life.
If lack of laws was the problem, you would have more crime in the surrounding areas of Chicago were the laws are not as strict. But you don't see that. The main problem is the illegitimacy rate in Chicago, it is at 75%. Regressives claim that the low crime rate in Japan is because of gun laws but the real reason is because only 2% of kids are born to single moms in Japan. Single mothers and broken families is what creates crime but you will never see the politicians address that because politicians benefit from a broken family and the crime and government dependency it creates. Its very silly to think you can fix society by giving the police more laws to enforce, then complain when the police enforce those laws. Spike Lee wants to give the police more power through more laws but he also complains when the police end up killing someone because of the laws he and others wanted.
'Chi-Raq' is pretty close to 'Chirac', the French president who was hated in the US for having the good sense to oppose the Iraq War (which led to the rise of Isis). But it was a weird time, when half the country thought Iraq was responsible for 9/11.
I don't mean to put a negative spin on ol' Spike's logic for helping war, but wouldn't "withholding sex" and creating a "sex strike" provoke Rape-ers even more and actually increase the number of rapes that occur, especially in campuses. Classic, you can't have this, so you want it even more?
The guns used in Chicago crime are obtained illegally, so how would stricter gun laws prevent criminals from obtaining guns? Chicago (Cook County) has the lowest prosecution for criminal possession of guns... enforce the laws we have, no need to add more. What date rape on college campuses is Spike talking about? He talks like it's epidemic... it's not, college campuses are among the safest places around.
