Star Trek: The Next Generation - Klingon Honor Guard is a first-person shooter set in the universe of Star Trek during the time of The Next Generation. The game was developed by MicroProse in 1998, using the Unreal game engine. The critical response to the title was generally positive with praise directed at the graphics, while the level design was both praised and criticized.
As a new member of the 'Klingon Honor Guard', the player is given the mission of foiling a plot to assassinate Chancellor Gowron. During the course of the game, the player encounters a variety of environments, including planet surfaces, caverns, enemy ships, and space stations. Enemies include rival Klingons (including members of the House of Duras), Andorians, attack robots, Nausicaans, Letheans, and various hostile creatures. The game includes nineteen missions across 26 maps. Weapons that the player can use include disruptors, the Klingon Bat'leth, grenade launchers, and a gun which creates a miniature black hole.

Tony Todd also played Worf's brother Kurn on Star Trek. That's probably why he was chosen for that part.

Wow, I reviewed Klingon Honor Guard just last week and now someone else has shared my terrible fate. Jokes aside, I had the same problems as you so I definitely agree with your takes on the game. From what I've found online, a lot of the issues with Klingon Honor Guard stem from two sources: a) the fact that Microprose weren't that experienced in making FPSes (iirc KHG is the only game they've made that wasn't a simulation or turn-based strategy game) and b) the fact that the game runs on a really rough and early build of the Unreal Engine; an earlier version than the build Unreal itself shipped with at launch! In the end, I think Microprose definitely put in more effort than most Star Trek games prior (or licensed games in general) and actually *wanted* to make a good game instead of a cash grab but it still falls really short. Thumbs up for actually beating the game; I got too bored from the monotony to complete it and said as such in my review

There's also Deep Space 9: The Fallen, a TPS based on the same Unreal engine where you play as Sisko, Kira and Worf. Unfortunately both The Fallen and Klingon Honor Guard are unavailable on GOG since Microprose and Simon & Schuster's Star Trek games are in copyright limbo.

Unreal engine was definitely more capable than Quake 2. It was competing with Q3 even. The problem here is that this game was the very first to use this engine, released before Unreal itself even, and developers obviously didn't knew how to use it well. For instance Unreal 1 had a software filter and detail textures to remove pixelation even in software mode, which this guys didn't knew how to use, the models and environments are all lower poly than those in Unreal, etc.
@pistool1
@pistool1 6 лет назад
At least those in-game footage muzzle flashes look like shite for some reason :D Or did the GGG boss use sofware mode indeed while recording?
@SinaelDOverom
@SinaelDOverom 6 лет назад
It seems so. They are both software and unfiltered (even '95 version of the engine already had a software texture filter to reduce pixelation, though not as good as U'98 example: imgur.com/a/Oz9kjQz).

I fail to understand how anyone could be unimpressed by the Unreal engine in 1998. No FPS had come close to the colours, textures and scale of the first Unreal game. Quake 3 wasn't out for another year and a half and Quake 2 was brown muck in comparison. It may not look great today but it was a massive leap forward at the time.
@joeygreathouse3029
@joeygreathouse3029 6 лет назад
I think it still looks pretty clean. I would compare it to Quake 3, and like you said, Unreal came out before. Definitely worlds ahead of Q2. Unreal was the first game that pushed me to buy a GPU, I had struggled with integrated SiS graphics up until that point. Voodoo 3 3000 really made it a whole different game. Without Unreal, I may never have gotten into PC hardware. I also prefer the sci fi vibe over the demonic vibe any day of the week. Way, way less cheesy. Quake always had this heavy metal edgelord vibe that rubbed me the wrong way.

A big problem is that Gggmanlives had to play this game with nGlide since KHG is so old that it won't run on modern computers. That's why the game looks so pixellated and you can see tons of "dithering" like in the Andorian woman footage at 1:42.

That zero-g level is a callback to the zero-g scene in _The Undiscovered Country_ where the Klingon Chancellor is assassinated. He spins around end over end exactly like the Klingon in this video 3:30. It's also cool to see those Rura Penthe dogs from the aforementioned movie as an enemy type. Nice bits of continuity in a Klingon-themed game.

Bungie’s Marathon trilogy, would be something I’d love to see you review. It’s been open source since 2005 I think and does run on Windows, but works better on a Mac because it was the original system it was made for. Finding a real physical copy of the trilogy cheap would be hard to find. They used to come in a Mac games collection bag for about 10$ back in the day, but now can cost up to 300$ all together.

Thanks for finally reviewing this game. I remember trying the demo several months ago and thinking it was just bootleg Unreal. Even though it's worse than Elite Forces 1 and 2, it does look like it takes more chances and experiments with some interesting ideas for an obscure licensed game from 1998.
@LazarusRemains
@LazarusRemains 5 лет назад
I think the reason the disruptors use similar ammo is probably because they were trying to be true to the setting, in which you can charge anything from pretty much anything (like a phaser from a nondescript 'energy cell') - yeah maybe it's a mild annoyance, but thats something tie-in games rarely do these days - make something different gameplay wise because it fits the tone - but it made early Star Trek and Star Wars games much better for immersion. Star Trek: Generations was another (underrated) FPS where the immersion level was off the scale. Thats why things like Klingon Honor Guard and Dark Forces felt like you were actually there.

You gotta try Star Trek: Generations. I remember playing that game years ago and absolutely loving the fact that it legitimately had a consequence to your actions. I don't wanna give too many spoilers, but If you failed a mission, the whole game changed. The inventory was nice to have, the remote sniper/camera, stealth suit etc were handy and carried on the ideas of Unreal's inventory items. Music wasn't as good as Unreal and it could drag with its pacing by comparison though, they didn't make as much use of the Unreal engine's advantage: Quake engine for interiors, Unreal engine for exteriors. Some of the alternate fires were great fun to use though, the assault disruptor's in particular. A glide wrapper will help with making it look nicer but it is a pig in general to get running now for the most part unfortunately. Still, there's something that continues to be fun about throwing a Bat'leth through an Andorian and turning the walls bright green. The alternate fire on the sithhar blaster as well was devastating.

I'd be interested to know what graphics mode this was played in; I bought this game in 1998 and I remember it looking far better than this footage, I particularly remember being impressed with the lighting effects. Also when I played this game I thought the rocket launcher, with its auto-lock-on capability, was the most effective weapon; I recall just firing rockets directly up in the air in an area then standing back as they zoomed down to each enemy regardless of where they were hiding.

The same problem i have with Id games Doom and Quake and even the 2016 one has this stupid thing with sharing ammo (That made Doom 3 and Quake 4 for me the best in the series). I mean look at 3D Realms Duke Nukem and FPS like Blood and Shadow Warrior... they even have multiple ammo types for some weapons (Bioshock 1 & 2, System Shock 2). In Guns, Gore & Cannoli even the double barrel shorgun has different ammo type from the normal shotgun.

It's nice that somebody actually cares about all these old games. Imho, as long as you stick with the more traditional old-school FPS', the reviews are usually pretty good. Otherwise it seems a bit more hit and miss. Did just look at your Half Life 2-review and was reminded that you have never done a review on the "Minerva: Metastasis"-mod. It's free, short and in my opinion, the gameplay can at times be better than HL2 and its episodes. Mostly because the player-character is more fragile, but maybe also because of level-design. In any case, among FPS' its one of the most intense experiences I've had.

3:02 Might be a homage to peculiar level design of Exhumed aka Powerslave. It was an excellent ancient Egypt themed FPS released in the mid-1990s. Some of the footage can be seen here on PSX: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HiG2WoDEqZs.html (8:27)

Thanks for the answer! Yeah, I know, I watched the review video long ago. I was just writing some info for other people possibly reading and scrolling the comments. I never doubted that you would not be familiar with that game :)

Klingon Honor Guard looks like my kind of game. Playing a Klingon warrior in the game must be like playing Space Conan.

I remember playing this through with 20fps as a kid back in the day. Not one of my favourites.

Open the door shotly to check how many enemies are inside and where they are located. Open it again and go on a killing spree.

So if it's the 3rd best and there's only 3 FPS Star Trek games.....that means it's the worst FPS Star Trek game ever made.

Subscribed. Would you review red orchestra 2 heroes of stalingrad? Is one of the most realistic and underrated ww2 games ever. Just pick up an mg42 and burn a barrel mowing down infantry, ww2 fps really doesnt get better than that.

You playied on software mode instead of glide or direct3d.. in software mode it looks 10x worse than in Glide.

The game doesn't run for me if it's not in software mode. If you know a way to fix it, I'm all ears.

Unreal engine always had a crappy D3D support, try a glide wrapper like nglide (www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide)

Gggmanlives I played it on Glide with Nglide. For a game from 1998 Klingon Honor Guard looked fantastic... with hardware acceleration of course, not in the shitty software mode.

have to disagree with you on the UT engine / Quake2/3 engine debate, Q2 and 3 lacked AI, and open environmens, UT was great at rendering big open environments. Plus A.I. was just great

Completely forgot about that game. Played only demo, without 3D accelerator, or was it VooDoo2 with badly installed drivers, dunno. PS. Boiling Point when? 9:35 not all Unreal engine games. Deus Ex solved this issue with a GEP Gun.

Star Trek Generations was also a FPS.

And there is Deep Space Nine: The Fallen, which is a shooter, but from the third person perspective.
