In the Star Wars universe, "Uglies" are starfighters that have been pieced together using salvaged parts from various sources. #starwars
These ships often have a haphazard appearance, with designs that may seem nonsensical or awkward.
Despite their unorthodox appearance, Uglies are often surprisingly effective in battle, as their designs can incorporate different philosophies and offer unique adaptations to traditional ship designs.
In this video, we will examine several Uglies found in the Star Wars universe.
Here is a list of books and tools I have used to recreate these animations. (affiliate links)

The Death Seed/Chir'daki was also supposed to have the X-Wings mounted on a ring around the cockpit that allowed the entire wing assemblies to rotate independantly of the TIE cockpit. Similarly to how the B-Wing fuselage rotated around the cockpit.

Don’t see a v-wing cockpit, y-wing engines, not b-wing fighter wings on the clutch. It looks like a regular tie ball cockpit with a modified engine & 3 tweaked tie interceptor wings

I feel like the Chir'daki (Death Seed) [2:48] & the Clutch [4:00] are the only two sensible Uglies Starfighter I wouldn't try piloting it if I was in the Star Wars Universe. Plus at least both of them looked like they can fold itself to safe space and wouldn't need to much outside support to just get out of said Starfighter.

IIRC, in Legends, the Clutch wasn't quite an Ugly. It was more a unique variant of the Tie Fighter made by a smaller Imperial Warlord marketed towards mercenary groups (aka: the pirates that worked for the Warlords). It actually had design specifications and a general blueprint, though they weren't held to as rigorous standards like bigger production fighters, which allowed individual squadrons to modify them to an extent. It's actually one of the few good designs. Wedge Antilles himself recognizes how deadly they are and is happy to see a squadron of them come to his aid in the books. While he's a X-Wing pilot through and through, he does on occasion acknowledge the advantages other ships have and admire the ones that excel those areas. TIE Defenders, Death Seeds, etc.

The Deathseed was also purpose built. Its not a hobbled together fighter made from necessity. Rather it was manufactured by the Twi' leks with parts purchased from both Incom (X-Wing manufacture) and Seiner (TIE manufacture). Another feature was the fact that the Deathseed's S Foils were mounted on motorized ring so they could be rotated for optimum maneuverability and weapons targeting. Although the X and TIE parts were relatively cheap, the cost of building the fighters by the Twi'lek themselves made it so projectile launchers were not cost effective and so they were not included in the ship's design. Otherwise its a very good fighter and definitely my favorite "ugly".

I’ve had an idea for an ugly made from the fused halves of the front of an AT-TE mixed with custom-made wings scrapped from multiple B wing long wings (the very long wings on the b wing), and U wings, tie fighter wings on the top for solar collection, defensive guns, Astromech port, even missile pods and a 0.5 hyperdrive. Made to also function for permanent or long term space travel, since it’s also crammed into the body of a turtle tanker

The one thing I will disagree with this video on is the statement that the Uglies were surprisingly effective in combat. This is not the case for most of the Uglies in universe. While the concepts might be innovative. The fact that most of the time these ships were made from salvaged parts at pirate bases with less-than-ideal industrial bases led, often, to these uglies being death traps for pilots flying them against most regular fighters. The exceptions on this list are the Chirdaki (Deathseed), Erron Kel's Deathraven, and the Clutch fighters. Those three designs were purpose built using well maintained parts and were better built craft that pilots actually had a chance at flying and surviving in combat.

The Verity is the only one that actually looks like it was assembled from random scavenged parts. There’s no way any junk yard is gonna have functional TIE wings of any sort, much less matching ones with no obvious damage. I’ve always objected to the idea of ‘standard’ uglies as well, especially with stuff like a TIE with y-wing engines in the same fleet as a Y-wing with TIE wings replacing the engines. Just put the parts back on the original ship!
@captin3149
@captin3149 Год назад
I ran a Star Wars tabletop game where my players made their own uglies. It wasn't an attempt to *explain* how they got Tie solar panels, but in that game they looted a starship graveyard with a derelict Star Destroyer. The Ties in the hangar were damaged in what killed the destroyer, but there were enough components to build several uglies anyway.

For some reason I can't stop thinking about the irony and near literal f-you to The Empire that a bunch of galactic red necks had managed to slap together a FAR superior star fighter than a literal galactic government with top of the line scientist, engineers, shipyards and so on. Just, think about that for a moment; some possibly drunk halogens in the outer rim with just *barely* the basics of star fighter technical know-how, managed to make a star fighter that kicked the metaphorical teeth in of a star fighter planed, designed, tested, and approved by a galaxy sized empire. . . . Damn, talk bout embarrassing right? XD
