I always wanted this episode to be a 2-parter. They never did enough of these First Contact episodes for my taste and when they did, they always went the old Star Trek/Twilight Zone route, which got preachy and boring. The only exception to this was the 2 episodes with The Aschen.
The entire first couple of seasons were almost exclusively first contact episodes. This first contact episode was actually a bit of a surprise, by this point, most watching had forgotten that there were teams out there doing this sort of thing all the time, the fact that they had a protocol for first contact that they immediately knew to follow meant this sort of thing happened frequently.
"I've got a masters degree in a system that is completely useless when you are in the woods". Magnets are the alignment of fields (for my younger self, a field is the wrong word, it is the up down motion in 3D round space, standing wave from a very very small magnetic hole in our universe) in atoms that come near plasma state and revert back very quickly. There you go. The question no adult could ever answer.
