Thank you for your work, it's amazing. I am very new to this, and really just trying to understand how this all works. In a hypothetical scenario of running this on air.. And this scenario is not in an effort to be practical or to to be cost effective, just to understand the dynamics, could you increase the power by supplying both pressurized air to the input as well as vacuum to the output?

I feel like giving you a thumbs down just to make you ask "what kind of a moron would do that?!?" seriously though, thanks so much for this video. I want to make a steam engine just for fun because I have water and wood. This is so valuable. I'm only 5 minutes in, and I love everything so far

Great job! Do you have an estimate of output power? Estimate of steam requirements & maybe a recommended boiler design? Again, great job

Thanks! Hp varies with steam pressure....so that's hard to answer. I'd guess that 70 - 100 psi would be around 2 hp. I prefer water tube type boilers for safety reasons.

Very interesting Robert, Is the gravel acting as a regenerator? Like in a Thermo-Acoustic sterling engine. It would be interesting to replace the gravel with a coarse stainless steel pot scourer.

@johng.3740 2 года назад
Very useful, connect the output shaft of the steam engine to a generator or alternator and you have a generator that can operate on almost anything that burns or solar power (using a parabolic solar concentrator to boil water to steam)
@gwseymour
@gwseymour 2 года назад
Thanks! I do prefer the turbines for generating power. Much smoother and controllable.

@@gwseymour Good point, though reciprocating engines that can be turned to steam engines are more commonly available and cheaper
@gwseymour
@gwseymour 2 года назад
@@johng.3740 As far as used items I agree. However the Predator engines in the vids are about $120 new at Harbor Freight, and the turbos in the vids were about $130 on Amazon. So, if you go with new it's about the same.

1- Is the steam engine 2 or 4 stroke? 2- Have you made any changes to the camshaft, also called valve timing? 2.1 Didn't you make any changes to the engine and just inject steam? 3- What is the pressure value in bars that makes the steam engine work?

The 212cc is about 6.5 hp, do you know what the hp is developed from the steam version? And what psi is the steam coming into the engine.

You have to lube the cylinder wall immediately after use.
@messianichebrewshawnkawcak1550
Does it have enough power to run a load when it is converted?
@gwseymour
@gwseymour Год назад
Absolutely. Just not as much as a gas engine (unless you REALLY pour on the steam)
@zaheeraftab3208
@zaheeraftab3208 3 года назад
Please confirm we can do same for four cylinder engine?
@gwseymour
@gwseymour 3 года назад
How big is your boiler? You might not have sufficient pressure for any one cylinder, as a little pressure escapes from the other 3 during the upstroke. It depends on the fringing order. If you watch the very beginning on the "Steam Engine Run Up'' video, you'll see what I mean. With a big flywheel, and a good starting spin, it might work. Personally I would try it, but it's a risk.

@gwseymour

@@zaheeraftab3208 That kind of power requires a very large boiler to start. Also, consider a turbine.

You sort of need an intake valve system to use this method on a multi-cylinder.

how much hp does it make after its conveted to steam?
@gwseymour
@gwseymour 3 года назад
It depends on how much steam pressure you apply. I'd say at 60 psi, it was around 2 hp.

@@gwseymour im wondering its capable of running a alternator or motor producing 9000 watts peak power
@gwseymour
@gwseymour 3 года назад
@@jesserebel8387 In my experience, automotive alternators don't like steam engines because of minute speed changes (alternator tries to load it's windings up). Permanent magnet DC motors work better. The little ones in the vid would not do 9000 watts. More like 750.

Have you tried with paralel two cylinder bike engine?
@gwseymour
@gwseymour 2 года назад
No, but with this design, it would require an alternating intake valve set up. Otherwise, one cylinder would be releasing steam pressure needed to drive the other cylinder down. Thanks for watching!
