Thanks for watching my little welcome video for new Texas residents. I know many other states you can do it all at one office. Not so in Texas. Rather than let you end up at the wrong office or do something out of order I thought we’d put together a quick video.

Click the link below to get your appointment for your Texas driver license. The agency that does this is the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The link below will help you located a Texas vehicle inspection center. When registering a vehicle from out of state you’ll need to bring this original form with you to your county tax office. After the initial time the data is sent electronically. But on the initial registration this is what the state uses as the VIN inspection so an original is required.

This is very useful. Short and info packed video. One question. When I look at the various inspection centers, they list the type of inspection the facility offers. For people moving to Texas from a different state (car already registered with a different state) what type of inspection needs to be done -- knowing this will help to choose an inspection center which offers the required inspection type.

You just need the regular state inspection. If you're in an emissions county it's $25.50 or a non-emissions county it's $7.50. Since you care hasn't been registered in Texas before you'll need to bring that inspection form with you to your county tax office.

Thank you for the detailed steps. Question: I am in the military and currently stationed in LA. I have purchased a house in a Central Texas county area (in preparation for retirement in a few months). I would like to register my vehicle(s) to Texas as per requirements mentioned (ASAP). My current duty station is not far from East Texas area (different county) about 50 miles only. Would I be able to register my vehicles in the nearest county that is nearby my duty station or do I have to register my vehicles to the "actual" local county on where my future house currently in? I highly appreciate your input and feedback.

I believe there are some special rules for active duty military but I am not sure. I would think I'd just wait until you're retired and actually living in the house in central Texas before I worried about it. Thank you for your service!

This is extremely helpful! I had a couple of questions if you know the answers to it. I just moved to Texas, and I do not have a permanent address but I am currently living in a travel trailer that I purchased here in Texas. So my question is if I have a california license with a california address and california registered vehicle what would you suggest I do first and foremost? Any help is very much appreciated, THANK YOU!

If you're not a resident you're supposed to title in CA and you'd follow their processes.

Thanks for the detailed steps. I recently moved to Tx and my current license is expiring in a month. when i book an online appointment i got it somewhere in November. Is visiting office directly and explaining them the situation helps ?

Yeah the DPS is so back logged if you get pulled over show your out of state license and the receipt for your scheduled appointment. I believe the governor's executive order allows for expired DL's without a ticket being written. You should be fine.

I am only in Texas temporarily for work for 12 months. AND...I'm only here for 4-5 weeks at a time, then gone for 4-5 weeks, then back again. I own a home in AZ and my insurance is there. I rented an apartment in Dallas for 12 months just cuz it made more sense than a hotel for my situation. I bought a toll sticker connected to my AZ plates, but I really don't want to register my truck here...seems silly since I'd have to get a TX title ...only for one year?? Will there be any ramifications if I am here driving with AZ tags on and off for a year? Thanks! PS. Thanks! Your video is very helpful. Texas should pay Tom and Bruxton for helping people sort this all out! Gov site is a JOKE...Impossible to find any info!

No, you've rented a place here but you still have your residence in AZ. You can buy a toll tag to save money on the tolls while you're here for work. If your license, car tags, and insurance are from AZ you can just tell the police you're here for work which is not a lie. You'll be fine.

Hey, trying to get my license in Tx. I just moved back from NC but I don't have my own apt( rent is high). I dont have a rental agreement or lease or mortgage. I don't know what else they will except because they gave me trouble once I went months ago. I never went back. I live with my mom. I have a job in Tx. I have car insurance and car is registered here but I don't know what to do.

I'm not sure what the problem is. You generally turn in your out of state ID and they issue your new one. They ask you where you live, I don't remember them asking for "proof" of where you lived. Check their website TX Department of Public Safety to be sure.

Hi. I just recently moved to Texas with a leased vehicle. Since the lien on my car belongs to a trust do I put the trust as the applicant and then put my name as the additional applicant. I am just a bit confused on how to fill out the application and any help is appreciated. Thank you.

No, you're the owner, if the trust has a lien the trust is a lienholder and that information will go on the title application in the lienholder spot but applicant is you, the owner.

Any state inspection place can do a motorcycle as well. And yes, they need it.

They'll probably give you one and tell you to fill it out but I'd probably download it and get it filled out ahead of time.

It's not an issue. You're still filling out the application for title, getting your vehicle inspected, and taking that original inspection into the county tax office. There's a spot on the title application you're going to put your lienholder information in. They'll know you still have a lien so you don't have a title.

I would bet if you do it in NY you're going to pay taxes on it. Then when he gets here and transfers it he'll get taxed again. Better to sign it over to him and let him do the whole process in TX.

They send you a bill at a much higher rate and if you don't pay they will not let you renew your tags.

Well if you are claiming to be a Texas resident you would need a Texas address. Otherwise you're not a resident. You can have your renewal sent to a PO box but they also ask for the physical address.

When you go to the tax office to transfer your registration to Texas they give you the license plate and sticker right then.

If you’re buying it from a franchise dealer and you’re the first owner I believe Texas gives two years before it needs an inspection. Regardless on a brand new car the dealer would be handling all that for you so you don’t have to worry.

No. You can use a Passport, a state issued Driver License, or a state issued ID card.

I believe as long as you have the title, insurance, and the vehicle is inspected you just tell them your address. I don't believe they require any proof. Mostly likely the address on your insurance card would be fine. But you can call your county tax office for where ever your car will be stored and ask them.

If you're doing a title transfer it's best the person becoming the owner do their paperwork. If someone's letting you use the car and it has expired tags usually they'll let someone pay to register it as long as it's got insurance and a current inspection.

You can call the Department of Public Safety or you county tax office to verify. When my daughter completed the process and came back to Texas they did their cars first. Now that was a little closer to Covid being over and the DPS was running appointments that were several months out.

It will depend on what county you live in as to rather you will need a vehicle inspection. And currently they have not indicated who will be doing the vin inspections for vehicles not previously registered in Texas.

If that’s what you want to call it. New car dealers take used cars in trade, those cars get sold to individuals who can’t spend as much. Older cars get traded in and some of them end up on buy here pay here lots.

Well. If that is how you feel I would probably not change your mind. I have a video about why buy here pay here costs more you might want to watch. A credit score is an assessment of risk. Poor credit is a big risk. The buyer doesn’t get pulled out of their house, brought to our lot, and have a gun put to their head. They can chose not to buy. The can chose to save up and pay cash. They can chose to wait until til their credit is better. They can find a family member to cosign. We are only offering a product based on the level of risk. Go check out that video. I speak the truth even when it’s unpopular.

I've seen plenty of folks get ripped off by your business practices. I'm in the process of lobbying for a bill to put regulations on your predatory practices.

Not 100% true. You must register your vehicle first before you get a Texas licence if you are coming from out of state.

I'm not sure if the worker there was being an a-hole and making it more difficult for out of towners. But that's what they said so I'm coming here looking for some confirmation if she was being completely truthful with me or making me take the long road process 😅

You have to have your birth certificate or no go on licence. but 6.5% OR 6.25% of the originals sales price of the car. so minimal price here, here here ,here and here (maybe missed a here) and then $1200 for tax plus a new resident tax almost $100. Awesome for work relocating me... either this or no job. So then my best bet is to trade that 2015 Hyundai Accent in for a better car then. right. got $4200 left on the car. is this all a gimmick to get people to buy texas cars.

If you have a current driver license from another state they will accept that. I verified with my son in law and daughter who moved back to Texas from another state before I made the video. Pretty sure every state hits you with some sort of "welcome to Texas" tax. You might try California, I hear they're pretty tax friendly and there's plenty of jobs there, too with all the people leaving.

@@buxtonautosales I bounced a couple times. On the ID. 3 months out. then cancelled due to ice storm. 3 months out somehow 2 birth certificates and a ring came up missing? Idk maybe I put them in a place I could find them. Right. But what DPS told me is that you can log in at 7:30am to try to pick up cancelled appointments. I got one out in Tolar. They also said that you can just say you don't have a car in Texas yet to avoid being turned away. I guess we will find out about the actual welcome to Texas tax in a week or two. No thanks on California though XD
