Steph Curry is one of the greatest players in NBA history. But as he and the Warriors get closer to their fifth NBA championship, the general consensus on where he ranks all-time has exceeded the reality. Take a look at why Curry now constitutes the most overrated player in NBA history.

Curry turned the game into a 3 pt shooting competition. Now that the importance of the big man is coming back, i started watching the sport again. When I try to see what the hype was behind curry, all I saw was a 3 point shooting role player. Ray Allen, Andrew Tony, and Reggie Miller was doing what Curry was. Curry is just a 2.0 version of these guys. He really is overrated.

Sports media spends way too much time talking about top 10, the goat, legacy blah blah blah instead of just covering what actually happened on the court. It leads to mindless floping back and forth on narratives depending on how a player performs on a given night. Remember when Chris Paul played great in a couple playoff games 2 years ago? The conversation with these dummies on fox/espn became centered around "is Paul a better point guard than Magic?" Its kind of nuts and is the product of having copious amounts of time to fill with nothing really to talk about of substance.

I think he is slightly overrated but I don't think he's the most overrated that has to be Bron. Curry is undoubtedly one of the top 15 guys of all time some say top 10 sure he's close. I rarely hear the argument he's the goat. Meanwhile Bron is maybe a top 6-7 player of all time and he's looked at as the "goat" by so many young people. I’d argue that as an individual he doesn’t seem nearly as impressive as other all time greats, but I don’t think there’s ever been a player that makes his team better than curry does. The nature of his scoring means he draws defenders like nobody and creates not only open shots for his teammates, but open shots worth 1 extra point. PLUS he’s clutch enough to make the big shots when he needs to. Whilst it’s not evident in his stats, his presence on court has such an all time great impact on the team winning
@skap_attack
@skap_attack Год назад
Well then, he has to win more lol. He won 2 EASY titles. People want to talk about invalidating Kobe’s with Shaq. Kobe was as impactful and meaningful to those rings as Curry was to the Durant titles. I would argue more so because Kobe was the best defender on those teams AND the closer. While curry is a mediocre defender and Durant was the closer of those 2 title teams. Anyway Kobe and Shaq teams only had Kobe and Shaq. No other all stars. No other hall of fame player. The curry Durant teams had 4 all stars and 4 hall of famers in their primes. Not going to get overly worked up by those garbage rings. That means he’s won 2 otherwise. And had 2 perennial all stars and hall of fame players on both those runs. Hell Wiggins was even an all star last year. Was their perimeter defensive specialist and scored 18 per game in the playoffs. If you want to say he impact winning more than anyone else, he has has to win more than anyone else. Kobe and Jordan won MORE with substantially less against MUCH harder competition. Curry would need to win 6 titles for me to have conversation about him going over Kobe. And there’s realistically nothing he can do to clear Jordan.

There is no argument to be made for Curry to be the GOAT, and you're not hearing that from anyone except people who are trying to give hottakes. But the idea that he is the most overrated player of all time is ridiculous. You lost credibility to talk about this topic from just your first 2 points. #1. You're looking up raw stats in scoring and assists for the regular season, but fail to mention that the players you have mentioned have either been in the NBA for more years and/or played between 30-300+ more games than he did. What are the averages for scoring and assists? What's the efficiency looking like? For "context, Curry averages over 24/5/6.5 on 47.5/43/91 splits. Who's doing that, CP3? That gives you a better idea of where he stands. That's Pretty disingenuous. #2. You bring up raw stats again for the postseason, then have the audacity to use Tony Parker as an example. For more context, TP averaged 18/3/5 on 46/31/73 splits in 226 GAMES, whereas Curry averages 27/5/6 on 45/40/89 splits in 141 Games. TP played in 85 more playoff games than Curry, why wouldn't he have more total points? The rest of your argument is just bloated casual talking points. Dame averages more points than Curry on significantly less efficiency than Curry. Does anyone in their right mind think that he's a better player than Steph? Karl Anthony Towns? Russell Westbrook? there are a plethora of players that would be designated as the most overrated, including LeBron, Kobe, Harden, Westbrook, CP3, etc. but this right here is an L vid.
@skap_attack
@skap_attack Год назад
Unfortunately I am seeing a plethora of takes to include Curry in the top 5 with another ring here. It’s already general consensus that he’s top 10. And quite frankly, I didn’t really need to make a video at all on this subject. Or at least it didn’t have to be beyond 1 minute. Jordan, Kareem, Russell, Magic, Kobe, Lebron, Wilt, Duncan, Bird. Those are 9 players that steph Curry will never ever be above in my opinion. We can quibble with the remaining spot. You want to give it to Curry, I’m ok with that provided he wins another one this year. Otherwise, I’d just assume have Hakeem in that 10th spot. What’s bloated is this entire era. Scoring his up nearly 20 points per game from just 10, 15 years ago. Hence so too is “efficiency”. Nikola Jokic is arguably the most efficient player who has ever lived. Above Lebron, Jordan and Wilt. We really believe that’s accurate or it’s era specific inflation going on? You asked for what the efficiency looks like? I have it in there. He’s 20th all time in PER and there’s 8 active players rated higher. I’m not “hating on curry”. There’s a fixed amount of spots in this top 10 and top 5. And bulk statistical accumulation is a factor. It’s the MAIN reason many have Lebron at 1 or 2. Curry was the best player in the NBA finals once out of 6 finals. I doubt you made it through this entire video, but to me, the best case against him is the last point I made. Steph Curry has never been the best player in the NBA. Not his own era. I think you’re disqualified from ever being included in “Mount Rushmore” conversations if you’re not even the best player during your own time. But that’s just me.
@remnant8898
@remnant8898 Год назад
@@skap_attack First, if we're being objective, based on his resume and impact, Curry is clearly top 10. Secondly, Curry clears Kobe, Shaq and Hakeem. You can't talk about greatness and not include playoff success, impact on the court, along with the accolades, records etc. and has done more in less time than Bron. Scoring today is on par with the scoring of the 80s (where most of your top 10 played), and the early 90s, so unless you had a problem with scoring back then, you shouldn't have one now. So, he's 20th all time in per. What's your point? For context, Hakeem is 21st, Bird is 23rd, KOBE is 29th, Bill Russell is 121st! Did you really think that you were going to get away with such a fragile point? Heck KAT is 14th, AD is 4th, are they better than Curry? Just using analytics further destroys your argument. I agree bulk statistical accumulation is a factor, but its not the overwhelming factor. LeBron has more points than Jordan and more assists than Magic. Is he a better scorer or play maker than them? Of course not. You have to put things in its proper context, like games played and averages. Throwing out Tony Parker, (who averaged less than 18ppg in the playoffs) having more points in the playoffs than Curry (who averages 27PPG) when he's played over 80 more games makes you look like your being disingenuous. And that's another lie, Curry was the best player on his team for at least 3 of his 4 chips. Forget the narratives, and robbery. The facts are the Cavs made their entire defensive strategy on stopping Curry, not KD, and the Raptors box and one'd Curry because he was the only consistent scorer when Klay missed a game and went down in game 6. And Steph has been the best player in the league since 15. He's owned this era, not Bron. He's beaten Bron 3 out of 4 times, changed the game, and is the most fearful player when teams step out on the court. If not, then name a player who gets picked up from half court consistently in a game or makes the opponent as nervous when has or doesn't have the ball in his hand. The idea that one has the only dynasty of this era, and he didn't own the era is unheard of. Just admit that saying Curry is the most overrated player in NBA history is an ESPN/Kendrick Perkins hot take and move on. You'll be forgiven.
@skap_attack
@skap_attack Год назад
@@remnant8898 The reason the video was made is because unfortunately, it's not a hot take that people are putting Curry higher than he deserves to be. You just did it. I was born in 1984. I was 12 years old When Bryant came into the league. I watched every game of his entire career. Now while I cannot boast that about Curry as I have not seen it all, I have seen roughly 30% of his regular season games and 100% of his playoff games. In no way does Curry "clear Kobe". Kobe scored more in a much more difficult era. Sure scoring today was on par with the 80. Agree. Its on par with the 90s. Agree. Do you know what it is not on par with? Kobe's ENTIRE ERA! The slowest scoring, lowest paced era ever and it isn't particularly close. Want to talk context? Kobe wasn't even a starter his first two full seasons and averaged only 13 points per game on 10 shots per game his first three seasons. He ruptured his achilles at age 34 in his 17th season and never returned to peak form after that. Take a gander at his 14 years in between. He led the NBA in points per game over that span and total point scored. Average nightly scoring for those 14 years was 97 points per game and pace was in the low 90s. He made 13 all NBA teams in those 14 years and 12 all NBA defensive teams while going to 7 finals and winning 5. Against more 50+ win opponents than any player EVER. He's beaten 26 in his playoff runs and Curry has beaten 14. Further, Kobe never played with more than one all star on any of his 7 finals runs. Curry's teams had 4 all stars for two of his titles and 3 for another one. Curry clears Kobe? Absolutely, patently false. This is why I felt the video needed to be made. It's not hot take or click bait. I have published 48 videos in roughly 3 years on this platform and every one of them is something I believe strongly in. And many of my formations of takes I feel most strongly in is because I watched Bryant's entire career live over 20 years. Then had to sit by and watch LeBron get elevated over him way too soon and undeservingly. Now the same things is happening with Curry. You think I was unfair to Curry? Fair. I appreciate your opinion. Now let me tell you mine, as someone who has watched every playoff game of every series of NBA basketball for 30 years. Kobe Bryant is an undeniable top 5 all time player. So if you want Curry in there, figure out someone else to remove than Bryant. He is top 4 in regular season and playoff scoring. He is top 3 in most 40, 50 and 60 point games in NBA history. He won 2 of the most difficult rings ever when factoring in opponent and complimentary help. Harder than any rings LeBron or Curry have won.
@remnant8898
@remnant8898 Год назад
@@skap_attack No, Curry deserves to be ranked in the top 10 and its evident. You've pulled rabbits out of the hat to call him the MOST overrated player in history. That's ridiculous. Well, I'm almost 10 years older than you, and I've seen the majority of the players you mentioned in the top 10, and Curry for most if not all of their careers. And yes, based on the very information you used to try and disprove Curry, he clears Kobe in almost every metric. How you've only seen 30% of his games yet can make such an opinion is beyond me. When you look at offensive rating during Kobe's career, its right on par with the ortg in the 2010's. For more context, the year Curry won his first MVP in 15, the average points per game was 100, which is identical to when Kobe made his 3 finals runs, winning two chips and in 16 was just 2 points more per game. You forgot Curry came into the league in 2009? He's a better shooter, play maker, averages more points, rebounds assists and steals in the playoffs, is clearly more efficient in all three offensive phases of the game, is superior in the Finals and didn't have as bad a collapse as Kobe did in '04. And I think you're overlooking context again. Kobe had a Peak Shaq for Four Finals and THREE chips, as well as a 2 years removed former All NBA player in Glen Rice . KD, Klay or Dray are incomparable to that. In addition, without Curry, Klay and Dray are not all stars or future hall of famers. It can never be said that Kobe made players that much better to become allstars let alone hof'ers. NOW, having said that, I still believe Kobe clears Bron, and I respect your opinion concerning for believing that Kobe is better than Curry. But I go back to your general vid that he's the most overrated player in history. Its blatantly false. Also, I don't have Curry as top 5, and I don't have Kobe as top 5. All of those scoring achievements are great, but he's woefully inefficient, to the point of shooting his teams out of games, and those 2 rings you speak of were not by ANY stretch the most difficult rings ever. Pau was an All NBA player for the 3 years that they went to the Finals, had a very good player in Odom with a complimentary bench, when they went up against the Orlando Magic with D. Howard. Seriously, that was his opponent. Beat them 4-1. How was that so difficult? And the 2010 Celtics were just past their prime but were still very good. But they're not even comparable to what Curry did just last year against the Celtics. Pau, Metta, Lamar, D. Fischer, Bynum aren't equal or better than last years version of Klay, Wiggins, Dray and Looney with the context behind their season? C'mon bro.
@skap_attack

@@remnant8898 There have been 4 teams in NBA history that have played 50 plus win teams in 4 rounds of the playoffs: The 2001 Lakers, 2008 Lakers, 2010 Lakers and the 95 rockets. Kobe was on three of the four and won the championship in two of those runs. Pau Gasol was a nice player. He never once finished first team all NBA. He had two second teams and two third team selections and was selected to 6 all stars in 20 years. Bynum went to one all star and has zero all nbas. Odom has zero all stars and zero all nbas. Fisher has zero all stars and zero all nbas. Draymond Green has been selected to 2 all nba teams, 7 all nba defensive teams, won defensive player of the year twice and been in 4 all star games. That is Curry's third to fourth best player on his team for every title run. You mention Shaq, yet downplay Kevin Durant. Durant is a 13 time all star, 10 time all nba (6 first team selections), league MVP, two time finals mvp (twice for Curry) and he led the league in scoring 4 times in his career. Even last year, Curry scored 27 a game in the playoffs but had Thompson scoring 19, Wiggins and Poole both averaging 17 per game. For the entire playoff run. Perhaps you're right, and I have been overly harsh on Curry. But it is mainly in reaction to this exact commentary of anti Kobe takes I've been seeing for nearly 20 years now. Curry came in the league in 09-10. Yes scoring was still low for Curry's first 5 seasons, but the league exploded after that. In his first five seasons, Curry only averaged 20 points per game on 46% shooting. From 1999-2009, average scoring was only 96 per game and Kobe averaged 28 points per game during that span on 45%. Steph Curry has 62 career 40 point games. Kobe has 122! Both LeBron and Curry and everyone in this era have padded their stats in the last 5 seasons. Luka Doncic is a 28, 9 and 8 CAREER PLAYER! Trae Young is AVERAGING 26 and 9 for his career!!!!! Doncic has the third highest career scoring average EVER. Behind only Jordan and Wilt. Do you really think of Luka doncic in that light? Or is something suspicious happening in this era? Kobe had Shaq for 3 yes. Curry had Durant for 2. Bird had McHale and Parish. Magic had Kareem and Worthy. Kobe's 2 with Gasol were no where near a "super team". They went to 3 finals and faced 12 opponents. Eleven of them won at least 50 games. Their 8 seed opponent one season was the 50 win thunder with durant, harden and westbrook. I mean, ok. I have been a "hater" on Curry. I will try my best to revise my outlook on him moving forward and your points are well noted. But can we please give Kob some damn credit too!

That means 1 less quarter for a multitude of games during their dominant seasons. Plus on the playoffs they barely play 5 or 6 games during the kd era. I sure agree that trying to argue that Steph is a top 5 player is ridiculous, the best he can get is just getting inside the top 10, but Steph's game cant really be measured only by points and assists because he is the best off ball player of all time and given how much he runs around the court without the ball and how much pressure it puts on the defense that is trying to NOT leave him open for a split second, it creates an insane gravity and helps improve his teammates shotmaking without even touching the ball. That's the only reason he can have an argument to be a top 10 player, without that unique gravity his numbers with his resume are good for only about top 15-20 all time.

Pretty sure MJ has a better case as one of the best off ball players of all time, in the 97-98 season he averaged less than 4 minutes per game handling the ball and still was around 30 ppg. MJ' efficiency is severely underestimated by younger fans, he did most of his damage only needing 1-3 dribbles per posession.

@gunnernathan7023 Let's get these facts straight, OK? Curry is the most overrated player of all time. He is also barely a top 25 player. He is currently #43 in all time scoring, few notable active players that is above him in this category are LBJ, KD, James Harden, CP3 and Russ. He is also #45 in all time NBA assist list, few notable active players that is above him in this category are CP3, LBJ, Russ, James Harden, Lowrly, Jrue Holiday and Mike Conley. He is #17 in PPG averaging 24.6 points per game. (28 players are above him, including Joel Embiid, KD, LBJ, James Harden and Lillard). Not to mention, if you consider him as top 25 in the goat list, then he is probably going to be the worst defender in that list. Now let's talk about PRA/efficiency, Curry is placed #32 in efficiency rating and the notable active players above him are the Joker, LBJ, AD, KD, Giannis, KAT, James Harden and CP3. Imagine putting Curry in the top 10 list while Gary Payton have more points than him, Lillard have more career points than him and heck even KAT have higher PRA than him. There is also no championship team in the NBA history that have 4 all star players, not even Abdul, Jordan, Kobe, Magic, Bird, Lebron and Tim Duncan, no team of course other than GSW's run 2017-2019, with Curry's 4 all star teammates. CURRY IS NEVER THE BEST PLAYER IN THE NBA IN ANY SEASON. 2009 Curry is already in the league, during this era LBJ and KD dominated the years to come for being the best player in the legue. Fast forward to 2018 up to the current year, Giannis won back to back league MVPs and defensive award. Joker won a back to back MVP as well and the most recent Embiid... But Curry did win an MVP award on year 2015 and 2016, but unfortunately this is the year where they blew the 3-1 lead oh oh, and forgot to mention, during this season Curry averages 22 PPG, 4.9 rebounds and 3.7 assist while shooting 40% in the field. Meanwhile Lebron averages 29.7 PPG, 11.3 rebounds and 8.9 assist while shooting 49% in the field. Oh and btw yes, Irving also have more points, assist and rebounds than Curry. Despite his exceptional off ball play, Curry is an average defender at best. There is a lot of greatness in him, but it took him a while to develop into a great offensive weapon, as the counting stats show. Magic to the Lakers with Worthy, Kareem and Riley. Kobe with Shaq and Phil 2x, Lebron and his superteams, Tim Duncan and Spurs to name a few. To be clear, this is not to belittle their accomplishments, but it proves you NEED some luck and help to get somewhere. Otherwise you end up like KG or Dame. As to the point about being only a scorer, Curry does that through a combination of cutting, off ball screen navigation, and on-ball creation. He was a 20 point per game scorer on 46% and made one all star game during that time. He won one total playoff series. He’s had more all star and all nba supporting cast that even Lebron to get to his 4 rings. And he plays on one half of the court. Total liability on defense. I appreciate what’s he accomplished but putting him top 5 will never happen. He’s a fringe top 10 player. But I respect your opinion and ability to disagree with me 🙏.

Curry is unselfish, not a stat padder, always try to make his teammates better, play the best offball ever. Without scoring any assists, man created lots of scoring points for the team, both by being doubled from the half court and by his off ball movement drawing multiple defensors. Here is the thing with me when it comes to the chef. Im a huge steph curry fan and i do think he is top ten all time. And yes two of his rings were with the superteam warriors. But keep in mind that curry also played with 4 all stars, in which 3 of them were developed and drafted by the warriors. Its like the jordan bulls. The tram made jordan and pippen into what they were the same way the warriors made curry, klay, and dray into what they are. And the fact that no one talks about the fact that injuries held him back for a large part of his career is dumb. Obviously he isnt gonna have as many points as harden or paul or westbrook when they all played in almost every season of their careers while curry has missed multiple years in total games due to injuries. And also curry isnt known for being a triple double monster or a passing god, he literally lets dray facilitate the offense and gives dray the assists of his made shots. So to say he isnt even top 15? That is borderline hating. I dont have him top 5 because he would have to get a 5th ring for that, but to say he isnt better than the likes of durant, Bill russell, or wilt is kind of stupid. All of bill russell championships were with bob cousy and havelchek. That trio were 3 of the best 5 players in the league of 8 teams. So yeah they are gonna win every year. And wilt was a stat padder who couldnt get it done more than twice against the overwhelming dominance of the three hall of famer celtics team. I have kareem, jordan, leflop, kobe, and shaq top 5 all time. But i have curry top 7. I have him over magic because he is a better overall player with a way better skill set. Hes over duncan who i have respect for but just dont consider him to have the influence curry has had on basketball. Only person i have over curry at 6 is hakeem. And that is because he was the whole package. Thats my personal take tho.

There is isn't a single fan who would consider someone like giannis, jokic, or Isiah Thomas above curry. That is just basketball blasphemy. And I get if you would want to consider duncan above curry because he won 5 chips, but duncan had barely an impact on the fame besides winning. Do you see everyone trying to be like duncan and banking in all of their shots? No, you see people pulling up from half court like curry. His impact on the game is the most we've seen from any player since Jordan. He literally changed how lebron plays! Lebron was not considered a 3 point shooter before curry came into the league. Then as soon as curry came into the league, all of the sudden, lebron is pulling up from half court. Thats called impact, which none of the players you just mentioned have.

Steph is definitely great and by just watching the game we can see that. Is the media doing what the media does? Of course? Interesting take. Curry was no where near my top 10 or 15 with how great you have to be to be top 15. That said i do think his cumulative numbers are hurt by his mid pre Kerr years. I also think a lot of his credit comes from how muchthe game has changed since he's been in the league. He's had a MJ, Wilt like impact on changing the NBA's Meta. Id rank him top 25 personally maybe top 20 even with what you said because of the rings and the changing of the meta.

He would have won mvp if Klay wasn't injured then they make the playoffs and maybe win the chip. 2022 he was the best player in the playoffs and finals. When Klay was injured? Hahaha. Really? You're joking. I remember Curry being injury prone. Having a loaded team allowed Curry to get some timely rest when opposing Stars didn't have the same luxury. The closest Curry came to a normal season was in 2021 and that was for one season. Not an entire career like other stars. Plus half the league was injured in 2022 yet I hear nothing from you.

Warriors never won a champ without a major injury to their opponent's top two stars in 2015, 2017, and 2018. Doesn't this include dirty plays when they clearly have the better roster. Guess they didn't believe in Curry like they claim.

Although we can definitely say he’s had an impact hurting the nba playing style although most of the guys he’s inspired with the 3 point shooting could never play off the ball as good as curry. I think he’s becoming a bit underrated in terms of other things he does on the court besides shooting compared to the 3 other guys who i mentioned who are so ball dominant.

@@Grievous_ biggest tell tale sign is when you’re watching a game and you’ll notice harden, westbrook and lebron are literally standing around at the 3 point line simply waiting for the ball to come back. they don’t cut, rarely ever set screens for teammates to get wide open nor do they crash the glass to possibly get offensive rebounds. whats even worse is when they don’t even try to get back on defense. everyone talks shit about how bad of a defender stephen curry but in reality he gives way more effort, he reads the passing lanes, he’ll take a charge every now and then. those other guys literally lose their man on a backdoor cut at least once every game and then point the finger at a teammate. i’ve never seen curry blames teammates for his own defensive lapses.

@vineezyproductions9638 Hello baby boy, I love how cute your logic was. Unfortunately, you may need to hop down from Curry's d1ck and look at the facts below: Curry is a mix of great player and overrated player. He is currently #43 in all time scoring, few notable active players that is above him in this category are LBJ, KD, James Harden CP3 and Russ. Imagine putting Curry in the top 10 list while Gary Payton has more points than him, Lillard has more career points than him and heck even KAT have higher PRA than him. There is also no championship team in the NBA history that have 4 all star players, not even Abdul, Jordan, Kobe, Magic, Bird, Lebron and Tim Duncan that have 4 all star player in one team, no team of course other than GSW's run 2017-2019, with Curry's 4 all star teammate. CURRY IS NEVER THE BEST PLAYER IN THE NBA IN ANY SEASON. 2009 Curry is already in the league, during this era LBJ and KD dominated the years to come on the best player in the legue. Fast forward to 2018 up to the current year, Giannis won back to back league MVPs and defensive award. Joker won a back to back MVP as well and the most recent Embiid... But Curry did win an MVP award on year 2015 and 2016, but unfortunately this is the year were they blew the 3-1 lead oh oh, and forgot to mention, during this season Curry averages 22 PPG, 4.9 rebounds and 3.7 assist while shooting 40% in the field. Meanwhile Lebron averages 29.7 PPG, 11.3 rebounds and 8.9 assist while shooting 49% in the field. Oh and btw yes, Irving also have more points, assist and rebounds than Curry. Sooo I guess whoever voted for Curry as an MVP that year is smoking crack. He is a glorified role player, just kidding. All jokes aside he is a great player, but not a top 10 player as 17 yr olds envisioned. You kids should give credit to Steve Kerr's moving screen as well.

This is the guy who benefited the most from the rule changes that basically negated all physical contact outside of the finals. Early on in his career there were questions about whether he would physically be able to hold up cause his ankles are made out of glass. His shooting percentage also drops drastically in the finals when the defense is actually physical. If the game was played like it was in the 90s all the way until the early 2000s he would have been a marginal all star and probably would have been out of the league due to injury. He should be thanking the rules makers even more than Lebron should be.
