I think this is such a huge revolution for people with eating disorders. She works out and is healthy but she eats. She eats what she wants and as much as she wants. The just way she wants without shame without that "should I eat that?" "Is this too much?" Shes hungry and she eats. As someone who actively denied hunger for year and years and years this is such a beautiful thing to see and have someone just put this out there.

I can see why, it's def better than having orthorexia and anorexia among others. But it's difficult to define intuitive eating or understand what it is, it'd also dangerous to simplify it as eating what you want when you want. I think it's helpful to focus on fixing your gut first so that bad microbes aren't messing with food cravings, and getting adapted to keto is a good idea because carbs tend to have you hungry and eating too much when you don't really need to. I know she's vegan, but I think doing keto and 2-3 meals(obviously probably not for anorexics or just anyone to start with, you might just naturally intermittent fast too as you adapt) with nutrient density from animal foods(don't tell me 'nutrient dense' plant foods are comparable for intuitive eating, they're not) and energy density from healthy fats(yes fat from quality healthy animals is healthy doing keto, so is coconut oil) is helpful, after a while you start to get to know your body's cravings for nutrients and energy from fat, carbs can be really deceptive. You can't replicate nutrient dense animal foods for how satiating they are for intuitive eating, you just can't get the same effect any other way, not even low quality animal foods are as effective as higher quality, partly due to imbalanced omegas messing with satiation among other things, and they can also mess with hormones negatively where quality animal fat and foods tend to be good for hormonal balance. Once you adapt to keto and don't feel addicted to running on dietary carbs all the time, start reintroducing them to see how they affect your cravings and whatnot, it really puts things into perspective. Obviously vegans won't do this, but so will introducing quality and nutrient dense animal foods, at least consider oysters which many vegans consider fine, they're non-sentient I don't see how it's much different than mushrooms which aren't really plants. Oysters are so underrated for nutrient density and variety, they're actually a top 5 or better carnivore food so they could be a great start for grey area just to see. There's plenty of non-animal fats great for keto. But it seems like most vegans wouldn't truly be eating what they really want, I find it hard to believe when so many replicate animal products because they know they crave the real thing whether they realize it or not, seems counter-intuitive if anything. You can feel 'starving' for carbs when you're far from starving for energy, and lack of nutrient density makes matters worse. Reintroducing carbs can trigger carb cravings and that can be difficult doing targeted-keto, but certain things aren't as bad that way for me, like berries and raw honey and dairy. It's weird because one time I had sucralose(which I've been avoiding like the plague for years normally) that triggered the cravings a lot more than I would have thought. High-carb vegan isn't the best way to go for 'intuitive' eating, fixing your gut is one of the most important things, and having no adaptation to keto isn't going to help to know when you really need energy, and fixing nutrient deficiencies and effectively replenishing stores is important too, your body will start craving specific things either for energy or nutrients, fat isn't as deceptive as carbs can be for when you really feel the need for energy.

I decided to recover from my eating disorder May 4th, 2019. A few weeks after, Stephanie announces she’s going all in. Listening to her extreme hunger (which I was experiencing!) and prioritizing her health. I cried. I am getting to my set point if not already at it. I felt like she was recovering with me! I feel fully weight restored, but just like her, I don’t have expectations. I train 4x times a week (or at least did before COVID) and will not stress out about not working out. I gave up exercise in recovery until I knew it wasn’t inhibiting my recovery. I can never thank her enough. I am so grateful for her and her choice to share her journey.

Stephanie presents a lot of relatable experience. It's sad that such an intelligent and kind woman has gotten such harsh scrutiny over her looks/body. She'd still be smart and awesome at working out even if she wasn't gorgeous. Women get so much pressure to be all the things. Her experience with her mom's criticism brought tears to my eyes. I admit, I always had fun watching Stephanie try ALL THE DOUGHNUTS! But I also understand that it wasn't sustainable for her and I like that she is concerned about wanting to let people know that she doesn't do that every day but that it is ok to enjoy "treat" food.

It's crazy but also so freaking true how "body trust" is reciprocal: once you eat intuitively for a while, your body trusts you that you will give it enough and doesn't beg for more and lead to food obsession, and you learn to trust your body that it will get to it's "set point" and place where it's supposed to be and that weight gain is not forever. The body is so cool! Also, I truly believe going all-in is the most sustainable way to recover from an ED and watching someone go through the process authentically makes me believe that 1) recovery is possible and 2) it's not all perfect and butterflies and rainbows, but eventually it does get easier. Love this collab!

Hey Abbey, could you touch on the "clean plate" mentality in a future video? I struggle with this compulsion to finish everything put in front of me, and I'm sure others do too, because of the way I was raised (and my personality- I have a terrible time saying "no" when people offer me food/treats, which more often than not I just do not want). And also maybe how we can intuitively eat while also doing our part to minimize food waste? I feel like a short discussion on this would help a lot of people out. Loved this video by the way! It came at a really good time for me in my quest to be fitter and healthier without spiraling into disordered thinking.

Hi Abbey, I'm a 30yo man but I have got so much from your and Stephanie's videos. I have dealt with a lot of disorderly eating in my life, and I'm not fully 'healed' yet, but your videos have taught me to start practising gratitude that I am in a healthy body that can do anything and that not having a six-pack does not mean that my body isn't 'worthy' or beautiful too. That it's okay to eat what I want to eat without feeling guilt and shame... So thank you, you have been a part of lifting me from the constant anxiety and pressure I felt for so long :)

I'm in a larger body (I started dieting at 15 and it turned into anorexia quickly, which I then struggled with for 22 years) and I did "all-in" as part of my recovery process (with a recovery therapist, not just on my own, though I somewhat started on my own). I actually lost weight at first (about 7% of my body weight at the time) and then have plateaued for about a year now. I don't know what my set point is, however, because I never had a stable weight from age 15 onward (though I was never fat as a child or teen nor are my blood relatives for the most part so who knows how it would have gone if I'd never dieted). I have a feeling, given what I've read about the science behind set points and dieting, that I will never not live in a fat body because of all those years of weight cycling and intense restriction/starvation, and learning to come to terms with that has been a big part of my recovery, because getting my eating disorder recognized at all while fat was a huge hurdle and so many people think that it intuitive eating will make them look like me, when it was dieting that did this. The good news is that I've never felt healthier or stronger (and my blood work upholds this, too). Intuitive eating has made things I never thought possible happen, like having proper hunger and fullness cues, and not feeling "addicted" to sweets and foods. Like Stephanie describes, after a few months into true recovery, I stopped eating ALL the things. I started being able to keep ice cream or cookies around and not wanting them constantly. I actually have to keep my favorite cookies in a sealed container because so long will go between times I want them that they kept going stale. I'm just now working on the 10th principal of IE because I have to be super careful not to turn it into another diet, but as wild as it sounds, I really do crave things like apples and broccoli these days (I had a salad craving the other day while I was shopping, and I HATE salad cause it was always the "you must eat this and nothing else" food from my disordered days. I made and ate a salad with all the fixings I wanted and it was amazing). Really, the only downside I've found to living in a larger body is how other people treat me and the fatphobia and stigma that exists online and in the world. Medical staff particularly (though I have a great doctor now, thankfully). There are a lot of societal challenges to living in a larger body, and no matter how great I feel or how hard I work to accept myself, those are things I have to contend with on a regular basis that directly impact my life, and there's not a lot I can do about it. But other than that, and even though recovery has been the hardest thing I've ever gone through and I'm still working on it (I drank a non-diet soda the other day and had a panic attack after, so it isn't a linear path), recovery is possible I think. And IE is for every body. I highly recommend people read the Intuitive Eating book and workbook, as well as Anti-Diet by Christy Harrison. :)

im so happy that you are feeling good about yourself and that you feel like you are well recovered from all your problems. but no ma'am you are not required to be obese forever, you can get down to a healthy weight by eating well and exercising. you dont have to do fad diets. you dont have to do restrictive diets. just "gentle nutrition" and IE states it as, mindful eating and proper exercise.

@@bethanyday3471 Look up the latest episode of Christy Harrison's Podcast Foodpsych, you might find it interesting. Also, please don't give diet advice to people in eating disorder recovery, it's harmful. (Also, think about why your response to someone saying "hey, I feel stronger and more at peace with myself and food, and am also healthier than I've ever been" is to tell them that somehow they still need to "fix" what clearly isn't a problem for them... you have some fatphobia to work through. I hope you are able to learn and grow. Best of luck to you)

When I found Stephanie it was right when she started her all in process. I cried when she talked about her symptoms of extreme hunger and never feeling satisfied because I finally realized what my own body was going through. I couldn’t contain my hunger so I was eating more and gaining weight but felt defeated by it, like I should have been stronger and had more will power to stop eating. If I had known then what was happening with my body I could have saved myself a lot of emotional turmoil with my weight gain and not done any of the extreme restricting That only fueled my hunger. I saw her video and everything clicked. Since then I stopped feeling guilty about being hungry, my self confidence is coming back, I can honor my hunger cues and no longer am that bottomless pit like Stephanie was. I feel completely satisfied now which I NEVER used to, and interestingly my body fat is starting to go down. I just needed to trust that my body knew what it was doing 🤷🏻‍

Just to be maximally clear: no human body that is getting enough nutrition and exercise is going to have a set point that is drastically underweight nor overweight. Nobody’s set point is 60, 70, 80, 300, 400, and 500 pounds. Nobody who has a healthy relationship with food and themselves exists at these weights. Intuitive eating is not about overindulging in addiction. It is about rewiring your psychology and biology to understand and respond to hunger and fullness cues.

Ritu Parikh heck yeah! I loooove that you said this! It is not healthy to be severely underweight or severely overweight no matter what anyone says, our bodies (when they are working correctly) desire to be at a healthy weight (of course that looks different on different bodies and people). Essentially our bodies when we are listening to them correctly eventually maintain its desired weight without gaining or losing.

I've struggled with an eating disorder since I was around 10 (I'm 28 now) and Stephanie's videos have helped me so much eith this. I've lost a lot of weight because I thought it would make me happy. Spoiler, it didn't. I was less happy. Now I'm gaining a little back but I'm trying to accept myself. Stephanie is such an inspiration and such an amazing person

Thanks so much Abbey and Stephanie - you are both amazing and inspiring. After 40 years of yoyo dieting and restrictive eating, I started my own “all in “ journey- I want to become a “normal eater” and have peace around food. Four months in and I have gained some weight but am just so much happier. Lots love x

After having orthorexia tendencies and not know where my hunger cues lied I tried all in about a month and a half to two months ago. I didn’t have a ton of weight to gain, but I had a ton of mental health to gain. Since eatting wgst I want when I want and how ever much I want. I can say that my body has never looked and felt better to me. With the exception of having to watch out how much fiber I eat. I have loved this journey so far and so has my body! I have better sleep, less anxiety, and also less crashes through out the day. Because I find that I know actually eat a good amount of fats, carbs, and protein for my body at each meal!!! Thank you for talking about this!! I Have also found that I don’t focus on food anymore like I did. I can go through my day and not get worried about when I am going to eat, what I should eat, If I will be okay because my body and brain knows it will be!

A few months ago I was diagnosed with an eating disorder. This video made such an impact in my life because my whole life people told me that “to lose weight, you have to starve” and this caused me to get anxious and eat till I could not Handle anymore. Thanks to this video I understood that I was being too harsh to myself. I’ve been trying to get my mind better and trying to have a healthier relationship with food.

I've been away at University and have felt and seen my intuition when it comes to my hunger collapse. I've only just started trying to really learn my body again and while noticing that I am already understanding my body more, I'm also feeling great waves of shame and sadness about all these months (and years to a lesser extent) that I was ignoring my body and not showing it the respect it deserves. Trying to battle that right now is hard but I know that my body will feel so much better and I, as a whole, will feel so much better the more care I give myself. I'm coming from the opposite position of Stephanie, instead of depriving my body of food entirely, I fed myself too much junk and didn't feed myself what my body actually wants, whole, nourishing food.

Breaks my heart how food is actually a MASSIVE mental health concern for most of us. I have been in intensive treatment for an eating disorder since the second week of February and, prior to go into treatment for that, it was REALLY hard for me to watch Stephanie gain weight, because, in my disordered mind, she was harming her body by putting on so much weight so quickly. But, now, starting to come through to a more healthy view of food and eating, I am starting to understand some of what she was saying--I too, now, am able to be fine with eating just one cookie, because (as you said) I know it is not going to go away, and I actually didn't want anymore. I'm also really grateful to Stephanie for doing what she did and for having such amazing courage to go through that process in such a public sphere. The eating disorder is still strong though and is sneaky in how it manages to wiggle it's way back up to the driver's seat--but, like Stephanie, I think, one thing that does help to kind of cut through some of the distortion is understanding the science behind things. The other thing that helps is direct experience--sometimes the only way I'm going to understand and ACCEPT what my treatment team is telling me to do, is to experience the negative effects of NOT doing them, lol. Hopefully, after what happened last week when my weight took a sharp drop, there will be less need for experiencing the negative effects to believe something, and much more complete trust in my treatment team ;-) Thanks to you too, for doing videos like this, where you review RU-vid food/fitness influencers diets. It has been helping to keep me in the correct frame of mind on days when I am not "in-program" through the treatment center. Much, much gratitude for doing what you do :)

The part about her mom resonated with me so much. After I moved out from home at 18 I started gaining weight, and I did get the occasional comment of 'did you gain weight?' but didn't bother me. Until my parents started calling me fat. It's been years then and I'm eating different (I'm vegetarian, almost fully plant-based) and being told that I lost weight. It is so much harder to just 'move on' when it's a family member criticizing your body. This video was truly inspiring and the positivity I needed in my life right now. Love the fact that she eats the way she wants. And that for people who has a bad relationship with food, I think is just the thing they needed to see and hear. Loved this.

Love this! Finding it super encouraging, I finally hit a point a few months ago where I stopped wanting to say "no" to myself and just started saying yes to pretty much any food I wanted. I gained about 20 pounds and I'm at my highest weight yet, but I've maintained for a couple months now. Ive been pretty upset because I haven't been out-of-control eating for once in my life but I'm still not losing weight, and I DEF don't want to start saying no to foods again! Turns out I won't have to and that this is my sign that I'm on the right track :)

Having a parent with mental health issues is the worst. Even if you know that they are 'not themselves' and it's just their disease talking, it's still your mom saying horrible thing at you. And having to watch the most significant person in your life get destroyed like that is crushing. Anybody going through something like that my heart is with you. I strongly suggest to talk to somebody who works with these issues. I called a helpline when my mom was hitting a very low point and the stranger who took my call saved my sanity. You are not alone and you don't have to live with guilt or shame! Love to all!

I've been following Stephanie for a few years now - and let me tell you, the impact that her all in journey has had on me personally has been nothing but positive! Its encouraged me to not be as scared as food and to listen to my body and really eat until I actually feel full! I might have put on a few lbs along side with her but I feel amazing!! I’m glad that you understand that having ED doesn’t have a certain look. (I.e.; being a bigger person/smaller person.) I’ve been working out most of my young adult years to present. However, my intention around my eating habits revolves around looking a certain way. I was consumed by the unrealistic beauty standards by social media. In order for my to achieve this standard, I had to put myself through rigorous training whilst under eating to the point where I was just physically, mentally, and emotionally sick. Watching Stephanie Buttermore’s all in journey really hit me emotionally. The rawness and difficult transition from changing the narrative with food is hard. Especially when you have to experience the physical changes as well. It was hard for me to get over my ED but being reassured that this process is temporary and so loving to self Iove. I enjoy watching both you and Stephanie. Thank you for getting me through this 😭❤️
