Stoic Philosophy of EPICTETUS "The Fragments Of A Slave"
The Fragments of Epictetus are some great words of wisdom from a great stoic. Sadly there are not many of the fragments that were saved so we only have a few to read through. Epictetus's wisdom shines through them though. Hope you enjoy the Fragments of Epictetus.

Excellent video! I liked your interpretation of Fragment 20: "Choose the life that is noblest, for custom can make it sweet to thee." I interpret the fragment as saying that the more you act nobly, the more pleasurable acting nobly will become to you. For example, an alcoholic has difficulty abstaining from alcohol during the first few days, weeks, and months of sobriety. Those initial stages of sobriety are not sweet. However, the longer an alcoholic has abstained from alcohol, the sweeter abstaining from alcohol becomes to him.

I like your version. It’s a little deeper than mine and def adds meaning to the fragment. Do you have a podcast or write anywhere? You have some amazing comments that you drop on here.

I don't have a podcast, and I write about the Harvard Classics only on your videos. I would be happy to discuss some of these books with you if you start a podcast or if you want to chat offline. I learn a lot from your videos. I think we would have some good conversations.@@The_Cause

Love the video. Just wanted to add that one doesn't have to do big things to be living a noble life. Raising kind and ethical children, for instance, is a sure sign of nobility 🙂

Completely agree. That’s probably the most noble duty of any parent. Raising the next generation with respect and morals is more important than ever. Truly appreciate you watching and stay blessed my friend!

These Epictetus fragment are impactful. Many require reflection. The Stoics philosophy of striving for the noble life is novel compared to today’s values. I found half the set (23 books) for $130 w s/h +tax and took a chance ordering. It’s listed as “The Harvard Classics Deluxe Edition Registered Edition” from 62 Ed 1969.

Nice! I think they created an abridged version that does not include all the books. Seems to focus on just the most important ones. I honestly think that is a good set to have based on the amount of time someone has to dedicate to this series.

8:30 im happy you manage to see your situation as what it is, not many people has managed to done this one great Scholar who were so brilliant were known as a scholar of Scholars, sidi ahmad zarruq and he said to overcome this is to take a portion of your time everyday, before you sleep and ponder over death- this will cause you to care less about people's opinions but many people doesn't recognize the truth of this statement until they're lying on their death bed

Dear Mr. Pirie, it occurs to me that the lack of the study of basic values and a lack of knowledge has led to an explosion in the "industry" of mental health and allow some to indulge in the belief that they can chemically medicate their way out of a lack of knowledge and mastery of themselves. The ancients speak of the word "happiness" and its pursuit in a way that is entirely inverted from its modern meaning which is taken by many to be synonymous with material gain and temporal entertainments. It occurs to me in the context of our modern Western paradigm that we are not even aware of the inversion of definitions of words and their original intent and meaning. The wisdom of : “Choose the life that is Noblest, for custom can make it sweet to thee.” It is profound, and yet to he who knows not what is meant by the word "Noble" is, which we assume the young folk do know we perhaps we miss our step and they are lost in what has happened with the ever changing "dictionary" of language within our own English language.

I noted a similar thing with how the old thinkers spoke about "freedom". Modern people talkof freedom only in the terms of how much personal control is granted to you by society (government, job, parents, etc). But the older thinkers spoke of freedom primarily as an internal personal attribute. Epictetus is a great example of this; "freedom and slavery; one is the name of virtue, the other of vice, and both are acts of the will". There are so many lines like this. I first had the realization reading Montaigne talking about education. In it he mentions that certain practices can "harm a young students freedom" meaning that they can damage his understanding of will and self determination.

Such a great comment. We have indeed lost the meaning of words and terminology has become so vague that we can barely find truth in what we read. This reminds me of the book CS Lewis wrote “Men Without Chests” where he discussed the defoliation of our language. Truly appreciate you sharing this.

8th letter of Greek Alpha; in Hebrew #9: good or best, the "T" sound, 9 = truth; a dash in Morse code, sometimes confused with the cross on some Christian architecture or not. 😅. My local Z-people call themselves Christian non-stoics as in they get angry, feel they have a cain-ish god given right to hurt people, do stupid stuff for no good reason, a lot like Nero or that group that used to go to funerals to harass and beat up on parents of dead children or soldiers. Oops, I did it again.
