THANK YOU. People seriously have lost sight of this honestly. There's a tribe that eats people, but we ignore it because of "culture." Its so rediclous.
@@karmaphuntshok9168 Yeah but not like the Dalai Lama did it. It's a traditional greeting where you essentially show your tongue to someone to prove you're not some old evil 9th century king. It's not to poke your tongue out to make contact. You're like showing as much of the face of it, so it hangs down. What the Dalai Lama did was at best co-opting an existing traditional greeting to get a child to suck his tongue. There is no version of that greeting that I have found anywhere, nor have I found anyone refer to this, in which people suck on each others tongues. The idea is to show your tongue. And the way he stuck his tongue out is NOT the greeting.

I Charlie makes a logical fallacy when he says this as that argument completely ignores cultural context. Had this happened in America it would certainly be inappropriate because of America's cultural connotation between the tongue and sex. Had this have happened it Tibet it would have been in cultural context and not have been a big deal. The actual video took place in Dharamshala and I am unaware of the specific cultural context there. Further more the suck my tongue line is intended as an idiom and not literally and if you watch this video "Stop Sensationalizing the Dalai Lama's Innocent Interactions: A Tibetan's Perspective" it explain the whole cultural context of the incident.

@@Knux5577 Look, nobody should have to do anything that makes them uncomfortable. My point was that as I mentioned and sourced earlier what the Dahli Lama did is normal in Tibitan culture and named a video which explains the context for the interaction. My larger issue is that a bunch of people are leeping to conclusions of pedophilia. As I clearly mentioned above that this video does not take place in Tibet but in a place of whose culture I am unaware of and I’m fairly certain your and pretty much everyone else who has commented on the video is unaware of so none of us know whether it was appropriate. As for the child feeling uncomfortable there are many reasons that could be including the large crowd and being addressed to the Dalai. And it’s not like his parents were nowhere to be seen; his mother was on stage. What I’m trying to get at ultimately is that many people are being extremely closed minded about the situations and what is and is not acceptable in other cultures. I’ve seen many people try to justify the point that this is still wrong if it’s cultural by pointing to extreme examples like human sacrifice and child marriages when at the end of the day there is literally nothing sexual about the tongue. A culture could consider hugging to be inappropriate and sexual but that still doesn’t make it wrong unless whoever you hug feels uncomfortable and even then it still doesn’t globally make hugging wrong. All I’m saying is be open minded about other cultures and don’t immediately condemn them because of your own and when you have different cultures faux pas happen like this and that’s really all it was.
It was super weird, and my dad asked a good question: "Does he kiss adults on the lips?". With all the wisdom he's supposed to have he sure didn't have the wisdom not to act like a creep.

There have been numerous reports, going back years, of the rampant abuse of boys in Buddhist and Tibetan monasteries. Apparently the predilection for little boys that many monks have goes all the way to the top. The abused become abusers, and the abuse becomes institutional and normalised, and passed from one generation for the next. Religions have always had a major problem with pedophilia - from Islam to Christianity, and from Buddhism to Hinduism. This is yet more proof that we’re better off without religion. Buddhism is arguably the most benign of all the major world religions, and yet it is still rife with toxicity and abuse. So yes, this sadly is very much is a common part of Tibetan monk culture.
Don't worry, hon. The only ones screaming it's cultural are the far-left progressives who also would get mad at you for not playing a victim based on your race alone. @Adrenaline activate what's baffling to me is someone can watch this out of context, heavily edited video, and claim he's a child predator without any other information. Rush to conclusions and get your pitchfork, that tends to work real well!
i was SA’D as a child and working through CPTSD in therapy. i read about ghandi (i know this video isn’t about ghandi) and what he did to little girls (TW he used to sleep with them naked to test if he would r*pe them or not basically, if he could “control his urges” 🤢🤮) and i remember my bfs mom speaking highly of ghandi. i told her what he did and she jumped through hoops to defend it, until i told her how little the girls were, that one was his niece, that they used to sob all day, and that his most devoted staff hated that he did this and were too scared of him to speak up until so much damage had been done. it should have been enough for me to just say that he abused people.
Yeah the Ghandi one is messed up too. I'm sure there's people who'll say that's just culture too. 'Oh yeah it's totally traditional for the men in the family to sleep in a bed with their nieces to test their self-control, that's been an uummmmm ancient tradition for many years'.
Gandhi is a straight up wasteman, i can't believe india put his face on their currency and call him the father of the nation when he was literally a pedophile, there were larger and more hard working freedom fighters than gandhi, but unfortunately he won because of popularity points.
Even if you want to argue he wasn't getting anything sexual out of it, it literally does not change his actions. If I punched a random person but I wasn't actually getting any angered release and was quite happy, I still committed battery and did damage to another human being.
See what you’re saying does hold some merit, but let’s play wit that logic for a moment. so in that same situation, would it be reasonable to assume you are an aggressive maniac who just goes around punching whoever ? bc automatically throwing the pedophile jacket on him would kinda be the same thing if he TRULY believed he was just acting in a playful/harmless manner that may or may not be tolerated in said culture. another example, If a little white kid is losing while playing COD online, and he knows he’s not racist, has no prejudice towards another race, but his feelings are hurt and he’s aware of a word that he can say to his opponent that he knows will hurt his feelings, so he decides to call the dude on the other end of the mic the N-word, Now since he said that, did the word coming out his mouth alter the way his brain is wired? Does he automatically hate all black people now? or is he still just the same kid who’s never had a problem with a member of another race who made a decision that he definitely shouldn’t make again? Now look I’m not advocating no weird pedo shit, but what I may look at as weird or sexual in nature, I know other cultures might look at these things in a completely innocent way or different way. So was it the right decision to make and should he be held accountable? Absolutely. But should he automatically get the pedo jacket thrown on him ? I don’t think so atleast with the information at hand, I mean I could be completely wrong but the way I see it there’s a 50/50 chance it was either innocent light hearted fun, or some sick creepy shit, all I’m saying as far as what the internet knows, we don’t know enough to be leaning towards either side, and I just notice that’s very common on the internet, and I 100% whole heartedly feel that in order to completely understand and provide a valid opinion on the matter is by approaching it at all possible angles.

Isn't there a different standard for signs of affection in Tibet, or how they view the body? I feel that there is a disconnect in between the context of what the Dalai Lama intended compared to how it was interpreted. The Dalai Lama was not raised in the United States, and he did not have our cultural upbringing, and so he would not have our viewpoint on what could be interpreted with only a kiss. Granted, yes, he did more after that by saying "suck my tongue," something so outrageous in front of everyone that could leave many asking, "is this a joke?" Well, yes, the Dalai Lama intended it as a joke, and he apologized for what he intended as a joke. There are actual records of him doing jokes like that, such as him jokingly trying to kiss Desmond Tutu. If he had something insidious in mind such as pedophilia, wouldn't he have kept it hidden and not done something like that on a worldwide stage? This is be a hypersexualized perception from on what is a harmless norm in Tibetan culture, which they do actually have as a traditional saying. Look up "Che Le Sa," and the tradition between grandparents and grandchildren. This is where the grandparents say "che le sa," which translates to "eat my tongue," and then they put a piece of candy in their mouth for their grandchildren to eat. The Dalai Lama makes his best attempt to speak English during public ceremonies, and at times this can be a bit broken as English is not his 1st language, which explains why he said suck instead of eat. Also, the Tibetan word for suck, "jhip," is not sexualized in Tibetan culture. There is a Vice article that goes pretty in depth on the tradition in response to the accusations on Twitter. I applaud the Tibetans for standing up against the majority in what is a misinterpretation and unjust perception. They are trying to protect what is an innocent and silly gesture. If it was something more malicious, they would have denied what had happened to protect and normalize something more harmful. It would not have been displayed so honestly on stage like that, and it got cheers from the crowd the presentation was for, it wasn't until those outside of the public ceremony witnessed it made an uproar. Honestly, the majority here might be bullying the minority. Charlie, whether you believe it or not, this perception you and others made could be wrong, and people are defending him despite you not believing their actions.

Old people are insensitive like that in third world countries. Old men in my village used to pull the d*cks of their grandsons while bathing them and laugh at their expressions. As kids, we used to get our buttts slapped while we would run naked in the verandah. I know Dalai Lama was just teasing the kid, but I can't explain this to people who are looking at this from outside and haven't really brought up in third world countries. There was a reason the audience was laughing when Dalai Lama was pulling it off.
That playful spirit does not look like that whatsoever. You coining it that way is already the problem. Kids don't act like that around others children under 9-10 yrs of age. Adults with 18 and younger is definitely a no no! Some suppose spiritual guide that has all eyes on him saying that just tops off how wrong on every level it is for him to say that. Zero playful!

Meanwhile Some churches get upset if a girl wears pants instead of a dress or a skirt to church. They always finding something to be critical about with girls.
Even if the Dalai Lama really did mean this in a light hearted way, even if he's so senile, tone deaf, and out of touch, it is unacceptable. He's surrounded by a gazillion of staff. Someone's gotta be able to realize that this ain't okay and tell him to not do that.
His staff needs to watch him more closely and he should never be allowed near children. That being said, since he never did anything like this in 87 years, I think this is clearly dementia/alzheimers. I think hes sick and thats not his fault, but he needs a team of care takers. Because the kiss and tongue part are pretty normal in their culture. The request to suck isn't common but it was also pretty clear he had no intention of allowing it to happen. For a guy who has been in the public eye for so long this is a remarkably small amount of controversy to emerge. It's unlikely that he's decided to throw away an entire life's mission and decades of goodwill in order to engage in a very public assault. More likely this is just an old man being playful from a culture for whom jokes like this are not particularly taboo. Move on guys.
This is why it's dangerous to have anyone revered over others. Thanks for talking about this. I also thought the whole thing was super fucked and the response was even weirder. It's worth noting it happened a while ago, and the apology only happened now because the media got ahold of it.

As a person who was touched by a man when I was younger this is just upsetting because this happens to so much people and a lot of the time people don't care and say stuff like " he did not know what he was doing"
I recently realized that we often talk about in religious settings small boys being abused and sexually assaulted but don’t have any groups or support in place for them. Like I see these accounts on instagram talking about resources for victims of sexual assault but it’s only for women and young girls. I’m not trying to say one is worse than the other but I notice a lot of spaces and resources online specially say for women and with how often we talk about young boys being SA there isn’t a whole lot of activism for it. Sad thing is when I DO see someone say anything about male victims it’s a way to try and tear down other groups for women not actually trying to support young boys who go through this.
@@RaspBerryPies thats an astute observation. Its easy to be outraged by monsters and monstrous actions, but when it comes to actually helping the victims of these monsters, theres nowhere near as much focus as there is on the outrage and “bringing justice” aspect. Not to say that’s bad, Im the LAST person in these comments who’ll be mad about people wanting pedos and monsters who sexually assault children to pay for their actions, but actually offering resources and support for the people/children affected is/should be just as important as giving penance to their abusers.
@@mud4309 Yeah exactly not saying there aren’t any support groups out there but we often just say “Wow what a horrible thing” and then not much else. Even if the person gets time in jail the actual victims still have to heal and deal with this. Makes it even worse when it’s gets super popular and everyone knows what happened to you but no one is actually helping just gossiping and saying how horrible it all is. Also I agree nothing wrong with calling people out and then getting what they deserve but there needs to be more focus on helping victims too
Honestly it wasn't even about putting someone on a pedestal, but rather, expecting at least some form of human decency, this is asking for the bare minimum from someone, let that sink in
I seriously feel like I was the first person to see the video because I mentioned it to people and they had no idea. Thank god this is getting out there more
Pope Benedict XVI, Bulldog of the Church, who defrocked 800 pedophile priests in the span of two years and defrocked every single bishop in the archdiocese of Ireland, would like to know your location
I saw the video on twitter and felt sick after. That poor boy must have felt so humiliated. And all those adults around that wouldn't help him made my blood boil. They're enabling this behavior.
I was just as repulsed by it. But wouldn't you know, they just released a video of that boy giving his thoughts afterwards and he said it was "a very positive experience". The brainwashing runs deeeeeep
I think in the moment the boy must have felt disgust more than humiliation (it may come after though) Just imagine an old man right in your face asking you to suck his tongue right after he already made you kissed him on the lips (with adults around clapping like it's the sweetest thing ever) when you're like 8 or something.
As someone who practices Buddhism I'm at a loss for words honestly Edit: some of you are correct, I should not be surprised. A Buddhist should know better as to not put up any particular person on a pedestal and that is my mistake in doing so, it's just disappointing
It wasnt bad. I don't practice buddhism, but its only out of the poverty of modern western mind that we pervert it. This was not pedophilia, but playful affection between a man and a child. Critical is acting confused, hes saying he was being playful and tricky, not that he was trying to prank him. Critical is usually frank and honest but here hes just arrogant and convinced of himself. I dont think he was "kidding" i think he was being playful, not sexual and pedophilic
this is literally western world domination. If there is "global white supremacy" this is it, using western value systems to judge a moment of affection between two people. it wasnt ped0philik. It was playful loving. i dont think ill be able to convince anyone, critical fans are kinda diehard interested in him giving surface level commentary in a monotone voice while he makes dick jokes, and they'll likely side with him. But they can't understand this sort of behavior cause they dont live a thing like the Lama. He is totally socially maladapted, his behaviors would be weird to westerners as much of his time is spent in meditation and in religious service. Not watching gaming videos and staying up to date on twitter. This behavior he displayed emerged from that as something innocent, he didnt see it in a weird light, it wasnt sexual, and from the absolute poverty of our minds, we can't understand this. It's strange to us, ugly, even wicked to many of us. But i assure you to him it was innocent affection. He didn't wish to do anything with the child except share a moment of love with him, and it was physical. This is very different from what hes being accused of
