Maybe Grandma knew all along what science hasn't proven yet. Get ready for me to spill some tea on hot tea on this week's Wednesday checkup! By the way, this warning is really applicable to all drinks and even soup!

Interestingly, I was always scolded for waiting for my food and drinks to cool down enough. I'm overtly sensitive to high-temp stuff, like people drink my tea and tell me it's "cold", but for me it's "just barely cool enough to drink".

Exactly the same issue. I’ll sit for five minutes with food on my plate whereas my dad insists on having his plate on top of the veg pan (to get it really hot) and will eat things instantly. Interesting but I hate hot drinks - always have - he drinks near-boiling-point coffee all throughout the day.

Hey mike, late viewer here. A benefit I experienced from drinking hot tea is when my stomach feels full from drinking sparkling water or soda or whatever, the hot tea kinda cures it. The China study had a similar issue. It found a higher incidence of esophageal cancer in people who drank more hot tea but only in those who also drank alcohol every day or smoked. It is plausible that drinking hot beverages might raise esophageal cancer risk if combined with smoking or alcohol consumption. But the study did not find that hot tea alone had that effect.
@demonpride1975

see now that is a study i could understand. because we eat hot food on a daily basis. because they can't actually attribute throat cancer to just drinking hot beverages, because of so many factors.

That would clear up a lot. If for instance you're drinking something hot enough to inflame or even injure your esophagus, it's increasing the surface area that gets exposed to carcinogens from other sources. But exposure to heat and cold is itself actually a cancer treatment. Pretty much anything that could nearly kill an average person has a good shot at curing or at least controlling cancer, actually, whether it's getting a severe viral infection, being subjected to a battery of toxic chemicals (chemotherapy) or radiation (radiation therapy), or going between bathing in hot springs and freezing water, the adage "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" is very true when it comes to dealing with cancer.
@biancap1549

Perhaps smoking and drinking alcohol desensitized the esophagus and mouth, so they were drinking hotter beverages that ended up scarring their esophageal tissue

Just as the bell rang she handed me the cup and I tried to gulp it in one. I burnt my lips and it felt like I’d pour lava down my throat, the air was sucked out of my lungs.
