All you young bucks. Listen to this man he is actually speaking the truth. I was raised if you were awake you were working. I'm in my fifties 2 back surgeries and a neck surgery later I'm on disability and I can't even mow my yard. Hell there's days I can't even get out of bed. Make time for your family and friends they're the most important thing that you'll ever have.
@AdakStillStands
@AdakStillStands 2 года назад
And for those that worked years with crappy or no insurances, and couldn't afford their own surgeries (family first), the story remains the same. I'm in bed and psyching myself up to mow my yard today. The family time is more precious as others unexpectedly leave before you despite the surgeries meant to save them.

Honestly, it wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't that toxic push from people as we grow up. We get shamed into working our asses off, then when we break, ain't none of those people to be found to help take care of us.

This is a lesson I learned a couple years ago. I was 20 landed a good job and was grinding hard. 70 to 80 hrs a week every week for probably 18 months or so. I bought and paid for all the toys I wanted then I realized I couldn't play with my new toys because I was allways working. I missed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then the fourth of July came around and I told boss man I was taking off work. And he lost his shit. Said I wasn't entitled to vacation I was to important. I quit found almost an identical job and now I live comfortably 40 hrs a week. Any extra I work is because I want to not because bossman tells me I have to

He's speaking truth. I've been an industrial electrician for 30 years. I did 6 years in a shipyard before that. I'm currently recovering from disc fusion in my neck. I dread going back to work, because I guess I'm not completely used up. I haven't even had the opportunity to work 40hrs in many years. Thank God for my union insurance plan, at least I won't be bankrupt. I wish you all the best.

You're absolutely right. When my husband and I got married 30 years ago, he was working 80-100 hours every week at a sawmill. It was ridiculous. They had him so beat down mentally, he didn't think he could go anywhere else. We bought a house, then they cut overtime, and we couldn't make the payment. We sold it, and moved into something smaller we could afford on 40 hours. He eventually went to work elsewhere making better money with fewer hours, but the damage was already done physically. He's 55 and already had a hip replaced. I'm just praying he can make it to retirement. There's more to life than working for a McMansion.

The harder decision is shall one spend their savings on the operations? With medical costs out of control, not everything deductible, uncovered services, and especially *no guarantees or warranties* of "cures" crashing into recession and rising basic needs costs (housing, food, gas, etc), palliative or no care is more common these days. Spot on sir. My momma always said: "Son, if you can't pay all your bills and live somewhat comfortably with a 40 hour a week check, then you ain't livin right." I saw exactly what youre talkin about at my last job working as a machinist in an assembly tool factory and saw people begging for overtime in order to pay their bills. After seeing it with my own two eyes I kept working there until I found me a better job as a toolmakers apprentice and now I make better money and it's more laid back. And I try to use my extra money to support a family I know in need.

The overtime cometh, and the repo man taketh away…. As a 31 year old business owner who has been all over the place with hours and work structures and responsibilities, you are spot on. I missed noticing some health issues because I was too busy busting ass and hustling. Now I’m lucky if I can actually complete 40 hours myself each week. Thankfully I have the ability to hire and delegate across all employees so none of us have to deal with overtime and we all get to spend time with family and have vacations and time off, as it should be.

This was validating. I started my career working 70 hours a week (trucking) and realized very quickly that it sucked. Went to school to pick up a skill set that would let me work a 40 hour work week specifically so I could have a life outside of work. Now I have a decent job where I work my 40 and I occasionally pick up an extra shift driving a school bus when I feel like it.

Live. Within. Your. Means. My father taught me that a long time ago. Didn't understand that concept until I was 25. I'm 35 and just now understanding that concept. I sell and install tires for a living. Was able to buy a house and a nice car for my fiance on the income. But all my "extra" income is going towards past decisions that were made. Working off my debt has become my, my... focus. I'm getting married soon and I want to be able to go on vacations, buy those nice things, live alittle. Can't do it simply because I lived outside of my means for so many years. After I'm debt free, I'll be finding another job that doesn't require 50÷ hour work weeks. Like you said, it's killer on the body and mind. I love your videos and to see a real video about life choices come from this channel is awesome. So many comments from individuals like myself speak the truth. Keep up the grind, don't lose your mind or sacrifice your body for money. It comes and goes, but memories last forever.

A coworker actually calculated it out. He said after about 48 hours, or 8 hours of overtime, the government takes away so much in taxes that it isn't worth the extra work. I wish my Dad was alive to see this. He would agree with you. Operating Engineer with IUOE for over 30 years until he passed to a heart attack on New Years Eve. He and my Mom were going to go to get their hearts checked in January after the holidays since the Union covered Echos at Temple in Philly. I just wish he would have went there sooner, maybe they would have seen something and he’d still be here. Now in his tenure, he did take overtime and would be on the occasional 4day/10hr shifts when the work was available. But he didn’t overwork himself with anything more than 60 hrs a week when offered overtime, at least that I could recall. The moral of the story is to not overwork yourself, and if you ever feel something is off with your health, go get checked. Many of you have got to be Union guys, please use that insurance card, go get yourselves checked when it’s necessary. If not for me, but for My Father.

Everyone's different but even so, everyone should base their life on a 40 hour a week paycheck, not because it's a trap/overwork necessarily but because what if the company doesn't have anymore OT for you to work? You're doing the right thing and besides, you can get a pretty nice truck for pretty cheap nowadays (I love trucks personally) used.

Sad thing is that many working men have many different coping mechanisms of one form or another, usually the classic caffeine and nicotine. For a lot of us X-gens, it was cocaine and alcohol. For many concrete guys I've known, the Reaper came calling around the mid fifties. In the end, the money spent on material things and the hours spent away from the family will never compensate for being there and nurturing relationships. I told him sure, I'll find a way to make it happen, and didn't show up for my scheduled shift. I had medical leave and a "stay at home and rest" paper. I dont mind puting in a little more time each day to set aside a bit more for later. I still get to do everything I want to, just have to get up at the ass crack of dawn. That said your right. Dont ever get in the situation where you need that overtime to support your lifestyle. Overtime is fine to help build a reserve or to buy that thing / go on that vacation you've always wanted but dont get so over extended your going to be on the streets if you dont get overtime this week.

Paid off a bunch of student loans, bought a few decent fishing rods, pile of guns. Then I started working 4 tens and I'm just comfortable at 40. I bet I did less than 40 hours of overtime last year. I'll still take it here and there, but only on my terms when I'm ok with it.

Also yes, me and the wife have setup our bills in a way that usually my small check can handle all the bills (although with inflation and covid has affected this to a degree). One thing the oil field gets people in trouble with is all the money you make on the good times is how people want to live and when the bottom drops out they are in serious trouble. Damn straight buddy. After working 7.5 years of 12hr swing shifts (7 days, 7 nights, 7 call, 7 off in revolving 4 week period) missing out on tons of stuff with friends and family, never knowing whether I'd get called in to work, I finally got out of there. Took a 40% pay cut to do it but I promise you there has not been a single day in last 5 months where I regretted my choice. I used my time there to build up a decent nest egg and didn't allow lifestyle creep eat away at it as I got raises at shift job. I am so much happier now. All the stress and worry I was carrying has melted away. It honestly felt like I had turned loose of a 50lb weight that I'd been carrying for so long. The object of the game is to work less and get paid more... I got my brother who was a Aircraft parts salesman to 3x his income just by working less (30-35 hrs a week) and delegating the workload to the ppl in his team... thats why they are there.. He started doing that, the work got done faster, his ppl got more money and had shorter hrs a week... the company made more money, he and his team made more money and more time with family... it was a win-win...
@Matt-dc8lp
@Matt-dc8lp 2 года назад
You are 100% correct when you say working overtime benefits the employer more than the employee. For a $30/hr position it costs the company usually double that when you tack on all the other expenses (benefits, taxes, insurance, etc). Those are mostly fixed expenses so at time and a half overtime, the company is saving $15/hr for you to work overtime instead of hiring additional employees.
@daveymac-n-cheese9517
@daveymac-n-cheese9517 2 года назад
I'm following your logic but as someone who pays the employees I would disagree. At least for our company because we get paid the same rate for each man hr whether we are paying overtime or not. Those overtime hours for us net very little profit. We do it to keep the customers happy and put more money In our employees pockets. I understand every business and every industry is different though.
@mikejacob3536
@mikejacob3536 2 года назад
@@daveymac-n-cheese9517 You get paid the same man hour rate whether you pay your people straight time or time and a half. If you had another body on payroll the fixed costs of each employee would double. Twice the Workers Comp premium, twice the employer health insurance contribution, twice, twice, twice. Fact, if employers didn't benefit from paying time and a half for overtime, they'd have more employees. Everyone knows that productivity per hour drops like a rock once you pass 50 - 60 hours in a week. But it's still cheaper to pay more for less than it is to hire another person.
@mikejacob3536
@mikejacob3536 2 года назад
The company is saving a heck of a lot more than $15/hr in your scenario. There are a lot of expenses to carrying you as an employee that you never see on your check stub. If you're getting $30/hr on your check, guaranteed it's costing the company close to $50 to keep you. Adding $15/hr for overtime doesn't increase their overhead on you as much as hiring another person would.

My current schedule is a mandatory 50 hours a week with 55 hours on site (because they don't pay lunch). I've seen a local drywall business is paying the same as I started out at, and if he can match pay and hours on day shift I will leave my trade (machinist) to be a drywall guy. At least then I'll be looking at being able to spend time with people all throughout the week and not just on my days off. Edit to add: The people I work with are great, which certainly helps. However, if somebody were to offer me my 40 hr average with a 40 hr week, I'd take it. The company doesn't care to retain their workers, might as well quit instead of putting in a 2 week notice because they'll walk you out as soon as you do.

Now, I don't mind working a little overtime, but I refuse to miss out on my grandchildren's lives. Edit: I didn't buy toys, I bought a house. Payed it off in three years, but it burned down, because with everything else, I couldn't afford insurance on it, and I took a huge loss on it. The guy that I ended up selling it to, payed me about $15 thousand less than I bought it for, just to tear it down. During that whole period of time, the only thing I did for myself, was if I earned enough after taxes, I would buy myself a 6 pack of beer that costed about $14. If I didn't earn enough in a week, I didn't buy it. Now after having surgery, I'm living with my daughter and looking for a place to live so that my wife and I can get back to a somewhat normal life.

I think you hit it, but missed it at the same time. Sometimes it isn't that someone needs to increase their income through their trade, but they need to decrease their expenses through their lifestyle. Some people set up their lives so their things own them instead of them owning their things. There's nothing wrong with having toys. Just make sure you pay cash for them. Don't base your life on what you can afford payments on, but what you can afford to pay cash for. You might have to wait a few years to buy something you really want. In the end, you'll be able to enjoy it more. And, if the opportunity for overtime goes away (or possibly your entire job goes away) because of an economic downturn, the bank won't own all your stuff. If you base your lifestyle on the 40 hour income, overtime will feel like a bonus when you choose to work it. If you base your lifestyle on the 60+ hour income, you'll just be a slave to your things and your job.
