I taught myself to be crochet about 50 years ago using crochet THREAD and STEEL HOOKS (the hooks most people dont want to use anymore since they're so miniscule!) I was determined to learn! Lol 🧶 I "thought" I knew how to crochet. However, I've learned so many new ways of crocheting various stitches, plus so many wonderful tips and tricks since I've been watching RU-vid! My eyes have really been opened and I love it! There's something new to learn every day! Thank you, Tuulaa, for your channel and for being such a in good teacher.
@@char8059 Same here. I still have the old steel hooks. I need to try the newer ones. One thing i never liked in Crocheting was the messy edges. This is so helpful.
Finally the absolute easiest and best way to keep straight edges! This method should be more widely known. Another plus is that this method produces a sturdy edge that makes adding a border super easy and doesn’t cause big holes! Thank you so much!
this is amazing!! I was feeling so discouraged by my edges, but you explained exactly why I'm having issues. and this technique is easy enough that a beginner like me(I started a month ago) can pick it up in no time. thank you!
I've got an entire baby blanket with the holes that I'm trying to border now because I've come too far to undo it. Did you figure it out and any tips on fixing it?
@@thejessica-est theres no fix, just try to put the edge stitches inside of the double crochet stitches, don't go around the entire stitch, that creates bigger separation/holes, go thru it and the result is much more clean
I want to thank you for making this specific video. I've had such trouble keeping my edges straight but you made it look so easy and now it works for me. Thank you again.
Tula, I could kiss you right now!! I’ve tried lots of tips & tricks in the past, but nothing seemed to help. This is wonderful! I’ve just made a child’s scarf in 15 minutes, sides straight as a saluting soldier! Thank you so much. X
Oh my goodness. I've been crocheting my whole life and I've seen so many approaches to getting straight edges, none of which really clicked for me. This one make so much more sense! Thank you so much for your knowledge!
This is fantastic and SO helpful - I have spent more frustrated hours than I can remember, doing battle with horrible-looking edges. You've not only saved my crochet, you've saved my sanity too. Thank you many times over.
I am on my knees thanking you, Tuula. 🙏 The shawl I was busy crocheting for mum's birthday is complicated and I have spent days on the pattern, just to realise the sides are completely uneven. Your tutorial has given me the courage to start over and make lovely straight edges. 💕
Thank you for explaining WHY you use the stitches you use for straight edges! It helps me remember when I understand why I need to do it, not just memorize it!
i've been crocheting for almost a decade now and i've never seen this wonderful technique! typically i single crochet around my edges so it helps even everything out while also giving me a clearly defined stitch for seaming purposes, but this will be a huge help! thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. :)
Thank you so much! I hated the way my edges looked before I found your video. Now, my edges look so much better and I've had people ask how I got the edges so straight, I happily share your video! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you so for your lovely videos! They are simple, straight to the point, and no fluff. You explain these tricks so well and it is very easy to follow. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much..straight edges that are actually straight! A welcome break from joining granny squares. I've made 1 huge blanket and 7 baby blankets since discovering your technique a couple of weeks ago. A million thanks. Xx
Thank you so much, I have been looking for what I was doing wrong for 2 weeks. You kept it simple, didn't go fast, I could actually see what you were doing, the best video I have seen.
I have done this on my first blanket and it worked GREAT (I am a very very beginner). Every time I finished a row I checked it for length and every time it came perfect. Thanks a million, my work finally looks better.
In always come back to this video for a refresher especially when I’ve been doing granny squares or hexagons in other projects and forget how to do this.
I’ve tried so many different things to make my edges straight and nothing worked, I tried this and it is the most tidy and uniform. I made my mom a beautiful scarf using this 😍
Dear Tuula, you are adorable. Your crochet tutorials are the best, but best of all its your kindness and generosity to take your precious time to show us. It is never not appreciated. You will have your reward one day, I don't know how to crochet that well, yet, but I do know that you will have rewards. I'm 70, I should know something hey, lol. Thank you again and I send you good vibes and hugs from afar. Sherie Rodrigues from Australia. 🥰🤗
@@mistym960 oh Misty, so are you gorgeous. So nice of you to take the time to respond. I just love beautiful people like Tuula and yourself. Must be crafters hey. Bye. Probably will catch up again my dear. Hugs to you. Sherie 🤗🤗🤗
I found this video a year or so ago for fixing my edges with my blankets, and I had to search RU-vid to find you again because you're the only person I've watched that explains it so well and tells me what I was doing wrong initially! Thank you for the help!😊
Thank you for this wonderful tip, the uneven or sloppy edges always make me feel like I could have done better. You have given us all a way to do so much better on our projects.
This has been SOOOOOO helpful!!! I was so close to giving up on making scarves because I couldn't get that straight edge, but this technique is SO helpful and so easy to learn!!!
Thank you for your video, you made it so clear and easy to follow your instructions. Now I understand how keep the ends straight. You are a great teacher. Please continue to make more instructional videos.
This is the best method I've seen. Yes, some people do the chain 2 first, then dc into the same st, but without the "extra" dc in the previous row, it doesn't help much.
This is a great tip! I love double crochets but didn't like the holes at the ends of the rows but just thought that was how it had to be. It doesn't! Thank you!
WOW !! this explains all my problems !!! Thank You SO MUCH!!!!! Borders are going to be so much easier and look so much better with these straight edges !!!
I was making both of the errors you showed until I tried your technique. It's wonderful! Thank you so much for this video. I will check your videos in the future whenever I have a question.
I love this! I have been crocheting a very long time and I have never seen this hack. I always hated the holes at the ends of the rows. Going forward I will use this every time! Thank you so much!

I have never crocheted before. I started last week watching you tube videos. I had a coworker with 25 yrs crocheting experience who said crocheting is supposed to have holes. I am knitting a scarf dc & am unhappy with holes and crooked edges. Wish I knew this great crochet tip before I started. My next project I will do it your way. Thanks so much!
Tuula, I love the way you teach. You make everything easy to follow. I’ve been saving all your tips and refer to them often. Do you have tutorials on crochet Yorkie dog sweaters?? Keeep making your wonderful videos. Thank you, thank you and thank you again.
This is by far the best video I have ever watched regarding how to handle crochet edges. I agree with the viewer below: The edges feel more substantial without losing any stretching. It has been years of trying so many different tips to make those edges neat and clean. If only I had come across your video sooner!! I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR VIDEO LESSON! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Wow this is such an awesome technique! Never would have thought of doing it this way! Would you use the same method if you are working in single crochets, or is this just a double crochet thing?
Yes, this is just for double crochet and half-double crochet. Single crochet doesn't need this, just need to make sure you start right at the edge stitch of a new row.
Hello, I hope you can help me. I'm new to crochet and just learned the DC stitch. After crocheting several rows I wasn't very happy with the way it looked because it had gaps on the sides and also the edges were not as straight as the SC and 1/2 DC stitches I had just learned. The instructions asked me to chain 10 + 3 extra stitches. So I start with a slip knot, chain 13 and then the last 3 stitches of the chain will be the first DC stitch because I am told to skip the first 3 and make my first DC into the 4th chain. I looked on the internet to try and find another method to make the edges look better and came across your video. I am a bit confused though as to how to start your technique from the very beginning, with the foundation chain. Do I start your technique after I have made the first 10 chains and then instead of chaining an extra 3, I will try your technique? Or do I do the first row like normal (making the first DC into the 4th chain until the end of the first row and then start your technique at the end of the first row before turning the row and continue on with your video)? Otherwise, are you able to make a video showing your technique from the beginning starting with the slip knot and the foundation chain? Thanks for any help you can provide! Your edges look very straight and I really hope I can learn your way of making the DC stitch. Best, Lisa
Hello Lisa, sorry it has taken this long to answer - I do try to answer comments every 3 days but time goes so fast! With this technique I would do as you suggest, make the very first row after your chain the way you have the basic instructions for and then start this from the 2nd row on. At times I have been wondering if I should make some basic tutorials but then decided not to because there seems to be so many of them! But you are not the first one asking, maybe I should consider that! Hope this helps! _Tuula
How lovely hon! My mother did this sort of crochet, and I still have some of her lovelies. She had an interesting technique you might find funny. For young children, especially fidgety ones, she left open holes near the corners for little thumbs to find on her snuggly afghans. Thank you for carrying on such a wonderful tradition.
Thank you for reaching out! That is such an interesting thing to do for afghans! But it can be a good idea for a bit bigger children, they may want to hold on to the afghan through the holes :)
Excellent presentation! I assume this would work with the higher stitches (triple, quadruple) also. I always forget how many extra chains to make at the end of the row for each stitch type. Do you have a quick way of remembering?
Yes, works for those bigger stitches too. The number of chains can depend on the yarn used so for high stitches I try it out each time, to see what amount looks best.
@@TuulaMaaria Let me see if I get it No matter what the pattern calls for I use your double crochet technique at the end and the beginning of each row?
@@patriciamalloy5501 Yes, as long as you are working with double crochets. This does not affect the number of stitches on the row because the two stitches at the end count as one.
When making and pillow cover you have to single crochet in the stitch two times can you double crochet in the same stitch or put two single crochet in the same stitch
Single crochet goes a bit differently, I wouldn't put two stitches in the same stitch. Just chain one for turning and then always have the first stitch of the new row in the same stitch where the chain is. I really should make a video about that, several people have asked about that! 😊
I have been crocheting for years and never knew about this wonderful tip. 😁 Thank you so very much. My crochet work will be neat and even now thanks to you 🌻
OMG…IT WORKS!😲😲 I have tried so many of these techniques and none of them have given me that straight edge. This one does😱😱 Thank you, Thank you,Thank you💕💕 you are brilliant ❣️
Thank you so much! After struggling many times, this one worked for me. However,as mentioned earlier, would appreciate the tutorial right from the start for us beginners.☺️🙏
Great tip but how can I use it with half double croshet? And even worse how can this work when I have one row hdc and the next sc and again hdc, sc ...... I can think a solution for a pattern like this. Please help me if you can😕
I have an "unofficial" unedited video about half double crochets that I made as an answer to this same question, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I8xZDuP1Za8.html With single crochets it is important that you always make the first stitch of the row into the same stitch where you turning chain stitch is, to avoid holes. There is no problem in alternating the stitches and getting a straight edge 😊
Wow I never knew that! I feel like unraveling my cat blanket now you've taught me how to rectify the wiggly edges. Many thanks for the video, I am learning new things all the time.
Single crochet is easier. You chain 1 for turning and always make sure you put the first stitch of the row into the very first stitch, where the chain is.
@@TuulaMaaria Really?! Every pattern I have with single crochet says to skip the first chain below the hook and start in the next one. No wonder I always have holes in my work.
I'm just starting this and for whatever reason I'm having the hardest time with holding the yarn. I wanna just go at it with a little more speed but I struggle so much. I keep practicing its just hard
Just a suggestion - there was no YT when I started crochet, so I pretty much just followed the books and such. I have a hook grip and yarn tension-ing hold that I've never seen in a YT video. Play around with holding the hook and yarn in a way that feels better to you. If you don't copy the videos on how they do a slip knot, hold the hook, or hold the yarn, as long s it works for you, it works. I have a modified hold of the hook - modified knife hold (just holding it like I would a table knife, and I just hold the yarn loosely, with tension provided by my thumb/index/middle fingers, the other fingers just curl into my palm around the yarn. I can hold my project with my off hand and tension the yarn, while moving the hook with my thumb as a guide.
@@young.nugget I made a little video to demonstrate was I was (badly) trying to explain - but it was pure awful. I hope you have fun trying different holds for everything.
I have been watching tons of these videos and you are, so far, the only one to hold your hook exactly as I learned 50 years ago… I love the straight edges… great video!
That's interesting! It seems to depend a lot on your country, here in Finland most people hold the hook about the same way because that is what has been taught at schools!
@@TuulaMaaria I learned in an all girls school in the Dominican Republic… I try to adjust my technique and it is uncomfortable. So good to know there are kindred souls out there that crochet like me!!!
@@linaD08 Absolutely no reason to make any changes to how you hold the hook, in Northern European countries everyone does it like this, with only slight variations. Never things like lifting one finger up into an uncomfortable position.
