slightly misread the corny intro, he’s not an expert in stranger danger already but the dumbass is still supposed to teach kids to be safe after “learning”
yea they know nothing of corny he could kill them with his finger but they still have the nerve also they have no idea whether he has reproductive organs soooooo
@@Zimzamzoom95 Can't wait till the future time when human actualy travel around with aliens, and suddenly the news break out that Alien protesters want to ban movie feature alien abduction and ban the word alien itself. Sorry, weird off-topic.
You know, sometimes I wish I did a little more with my life instead of hanging out in front of places selling weed and shit. Like, maybe be an animal doctor. Why not me? I like seals and shit. Or maybe an astronaut. Yeah. Like, be the first motherfucker to see a new galaxy, or find a new alien lifeform... and fuck it. And people'd be like, "There he goes. Homeboy fucked a Martian once."
We had a teacher who was supposed to do the whole stranger danger thing, and instead she just coldly told the class "there are people who want to kidnap children and they use tricks to lure kids like you away from others. Many times those kids are never found. Don't go go with anyone you don't know". And damn that stuck with me and the entire class far more than "Capricorn the fugly alien wants to tell you to say no to free video games". Like what
My middle school teacher said a similar thing- she even emphasized that hitting, kicking, scratching and biting was the best way to get someone to let go of you.
My kindergarten teacher did something similar, and her message is still in my mind 17 years later. She even went as far as to say you shouldn’t take candy from strangers because the candy could make you sleepy and thus make it easier for someone to take you away.
one of my earliest memories is my parents telling me if someone tried something press my thumbs into their eyes.. brutal but deserved for those kinds of people. having almost been trafficked before, fight. even if your to scared to put up much of a fight any at all helps they use fear to make it look like nothings happening, if they have a reason to fear they might be caught theyll likely give up, and report it, anonymously if thats more comfortable, at the time in the mental state i was in i barely managed to put up any fight but it saved me
I always wonder about the casting for these things. Like do they just post up "we need people who look like pedophiles" and the people just have to apply full of shame when the casting director is like "You! Your perfect!"
it’s kind of a victim-blaming attitude to some degree as a campaign. You do have to teach kids street smarts. Women like myself also learn specific street smarts. but if you are a child in particular, you really dont have a lot of power in the situation and most of the time you as the victim could not really have prevented it. Society as a whole has to take more responsibility for things like listening to kids when they say they are being abused at home and actually following through on stopping that abuse. Learning street smarts is essential and vital, but so is being realistic about how adults have to step up.
When I was little, a woman came up to me and tried the whole, “your mom got hurt and asked me to pick you up.” I looked her in the face and said, “No she didn’t she’s in jail.” and left. I didn’t even think abt it when I was little but looking back, that was hilarious.
I cannot take the phrase "STREET SMARTS!" seriously anymore. It sends me down a rabbit hole of thoughts about secondary locations and throwing kidnappers off their rhythm.
I just feel the need to remind everyone that 95% of child sexual assaults are perpetrated by family members or other authority figures that the child knows and spends a lot of time with. And that fact deserves a lot more attention.
@SqwidSqwid2593 some ppl get off to having complete control of someone and thats the driving force. Sane ppl like us will never understand, thankfully
In Canada in the early 80s there was a shocking and high profile case of a man who murdered a girl after inviting her to a photo shoot. He called the victim and no one checked or confirmed his ID. She went alone, with her parents' permission! This was so traumatic for them that they started the "Stay Alert, Stay Safe" program. But as tragic as this event was, it was in fact exceedingly rare and not indicative of a crime wave of strangers attacking children.
Them trying to justify it to people like " No no no it wasn't super creepy, we had wacky music playing during the attempted kidnapping/rape so it's like super funny.."
I’m extremely late to the game, but something I’ve heard is to teach kids to be aware of *strange behavior* instead of stranger danger. Emphasis on behavior (including that of the people close to them) vs stereotypes ❤️
but behavior is strange based on the reletavive realtionship, your auntie for example seeing you walking in the rain and offering you a lift would be the reasonable thing to do, a random person who doesnt know you, regardless of well intentioned they are, is strange behavior
My family had those alien videos on VHS. All i remember was being like "yeah, of course people want to kidnap him, hes an alien, theyre probably from the government".
I like how the advice is "trust your gut" and then it immediately demonstrates how that only works if the kid has good instincts. "if you get a bad feeling get out of there" would be better advice since kids might get "if a situation doesn't immediately feel threatening or uncomfortable you're probably fine don't worry" from the first one
My mom worked in a juvenile facility as a case worker. She just laid it out flat what predators do to kids. We'll I was walking home one day and these 2 grown men in a garage asked me if I wanted to see their train collection on the garage. When I denied it they were extremely persistent so I ran home scared af. I was like 10
my mom was abducted along with my two aunts at a park in the 70"s (she was around 12), and a man chased after the abducter and saved her and my aunts life. thank you man i've never met that allowed me to be born
Growing up in a crap neighborhood we had a couple rules about child preditors but the one that stuck out the most was always "never open the door, all the adults have a key. Just don't open the door"
So the hero trap happened to me, but I was 19. Woman approached me in walmart and said she was a Mary Kay rep and wanted some head shots for her catalog. "I always have some kits with me and if you come out to my car, I'd love to take some pics." Legit had class in an hour so I said no. I wasn't aware of the human trafficking aspect of it but as I got older I thought about and realized how fast young women could just disappear
Stranger danger actually did some harm in teaching kids, because in most cases the predator ends up being someone that the child knows. People painted the idea of a creepy stranger in a van but tend to neglect that you should use teach kids to use safe practices around adults they ‘know’
@@Stefanius058 I was a kid then. Not as paranoid as you’d think. See we were taught from elementary school the USSR was going to nuke us all at any moment all through the 80s so by the time Stranger Danger hit it was a relief. Those were adults we had a good chance against. Unlike all those Satanic cults sacrificing kids left and right according to the talk shows (also all BS). Of course Stranger Danger was a con job that protected the real predators because whenever kids came forward with stories about predator priests and preachers and teachers and cops they were always dismissed as liars because everyone (adults) knew only strangers hunted kids. It may not have started as a propaganda tool to protect child predators but they certainly used it to great advantage.
"Avoid gang colors" To this day, schools have been ungodly vague about what's considered gang activity. It's memeworthy how out of touch school officials are with gang signs and colors.
I went to school in the wealthiest district of the middle of nowhere, and I guarantee that any tweenager throwing gang signs was a poser from the burbs.
Our school admins used the umbrella term "gang sign" as a vague justification to fuck with black and brown kids. Braids, dreads, and a part cut in your hair were considered "gang signs" even in elementary school.
My parents told me to doubt strangers and their unkowable goals, which i took to the extreme. Once when i was on a field trip with my class and we were walking in a line allong a street, an old lady we walked past looked at my group and said "oh, where are you kids going today?" and i said the english equivalent of "Shut up you old hag" because she was a stranger making inqueries to us kids. The expression on her face after hearing that from a 10-year old is still crystal clear in my memory to this day, i am not even sure i regret getting such a unique reaction at that age
As a kid, I always thought the whole "Don't talk to strangers" thing they tried teaching was ridiculous, because everybody's a stranger at first. Your own mother is a stranger when she gives birth to you, because technically you don't know her yet. They really could've used a bit less of an extreme take of "never talk to someone you don't know ever" because kids like me immediately write off your statement as garbage.
I wonder if they're normal people until the moment they see Corny and something comes over them. Like not to victim blame but is he secreting some pheromone or
I have had disturbing images from this show in my memory for the longest time with no idea where they came from. i just had vague memories of an eggheaded old guy with a teleporting watch. I thought it might've been a nightmare, but now i just learned that these distorted memories had a real origin.
The anti-bullying video demonstrating physical resistance is actually pretty impressive. Most of the anti-bullying videos I saw as a kid were just "tell an adult" and "use your words to talk the bully down" Geez, his name is Corny for a reason...
Throughout the 90's violent crimes and murders were usually going down, yet they were being featured more and more on nightly news. The frequent news of violence gives people the feeling that violence and danger is everywhere all the time, even if they haven't seen it.
lol the logic i try to put to it is that corny is an alien and so several people come to that town just to see corny or steal him,, cause y'know its a fuckin alien and it seems like hes the only alien or at least one of very few
I love that the actor playing Capricorn, Richard Horvitz, also provides the voices for: Zim from Invader Zim, Billy from Billy & Mandy, Daggett from Angry Beavers, and Razputin from Pschonauts 😅
I was almost kidnapped as a kid. The story goes as follows: I was next to a playground and was walking around with my dad and my sister. Suddenly, this black Minivan with borderline illegally tinted windows pulls up right in front of us. The door opens and someone tosses out a colorful ball. I, being the saint I was, ran over to pick up the ball and give it back as I assumed it fell out. I didn’t know it then but these people were dropping it as a lure so they could grab me and book it. Luckily, my dad was faster than I was and reached the van before anything could happen. It must have been quite awkward for the would-be kidnappers knowing damn well their plan was foiled, but having to patiently wait until I hand them the ball with my dad staring daggers at them to leave.
@@johnanon658 Trust me, my dad almost didn’t. But I think he might have called the police and given them their license plate, idk I’ll need to ask him.
That…Capricorn… is definitely from the sea monkeys live action Saturday morning show. And YES, everything. EVERY SINGLE THING about the show was creepy and disturbing as hell. Last episode I recall before it was canceled was where one got a literal fat head from compliments before his head nearly explodes
I gotta give them credit though, they included attractive women in their roster of probable sexual offenders instead of exclusively skeevy men. Good on them, +1 inclusion.
Slightly attractive. Not my personal preferences but I don't really care what a woman looks like if she's a good person. Still, yeah, women are also guilty of trying to exploit children. Not just children, 4 women actually tried to (r word) me at my job 14 years ago as there were no Male employees but 1, & he was off that day. I was much stronger back then so I could lift them off me, but it became tiring especially since 1 was at least 300lbs. However, my friend, the 1 other guy just strolled in that day to pick up something & helped me. He was a little stronger than me so he could help get the heavy 1 off while I got the others off me & then we just ran. Stupid women didn't seem to care there were cameras watching that the boss would see the next day after I called him that night to tell him. My boss knew me well & respected me so he believed it, but said we'd need evidence before anything could be done. Glad they were too dumb to attack me in a place where they couldn't be seen on the cameras as there were some places out of site, where if I had any control over I'd have had 2 more cams put up to keep those areas safe. Most men won't admit being abused or worse by women as it nearly always turns into other men going "HAHA a woman did that to you & you didn't like it? Pathetic!" I never cared what people thought of me after age 16 or so, so I just admitted it & they got in trouble, hopefully never working with any men again. Besides, working with the other gender can lead to distractions & temptation (or same gender if you're like that). Fortunately, ever since about age 23 I haven't had much of a sex drive & the whole checking women out when they walk by is a foreign concept to me, like dipping a banana in ketchup. I do still like women & find no attraction to men, do that's not it, rather adiseasee I have has effects that (not ED) cause loss of libido. I don't mind & don't want to get that treated for now, but if I marry then I'll look to have it treated. I'm 31 in July so that's a little past normal age for marriage, especially since my parents & grandparents each married in their teens (grandpa on dad's side married at 18 & my grandma at the time was... technically a teen, I guess laws were different then since the court still married them?).
Dick Grayson in the beginning, the camera does a close-up of one of those coin operated “massage beds”, that used to be found in lots of sleazy motels in the 70’s. It shows where you drop the coin in, and the logo that reads “MAGIC fingers” As the camera zoomed out to show the bed vibrating, my first thought was “how is that appropriate...wtf?” My only guess is that they were trying to show how “weird” the alien is...
we had a huge snow storm when i was in highschool and someone ran over the fire hydrant and caused the entire entrance to the school to be blocked off so people couldnt get in or out, and i was grounded that month and didnt have my phone, but my mom got one of the dads from the neighborhood with a truck to come pick up some of us to bring us back because they couldnt get in and i was called up to the office and he said my mom wanted me to go with him i refused adamantly for about 45 min and told the rest of the girls to not go and basically started a riot in the office with about 5 other girls until they called my mom for me she was mad at first that i caused a huge scene but later told me its better than randomly getting into a strangers car who i didnt know.
Looking back now as a kid who grew up in the 90’s, I find it kinda weird how many comedies and family movies had plots based around abduction, kidnapping, and/or hostage taking
@@isaaczerone That's a big part of the problem. People who wanna kidnap are typically smart about like the "your mom's been hurt and she wants me to take you to see her". That line would work on some adults who dont know their moms friends and are generally trusting. My brother has Aspergers along with some other stuff. He's 23 but he would definitely fall for that line.
I just remembered my mindset as a kid, I knew about kidnapping and that's why stranger danger was important but I didnt know about pedophilia and stuff so I didnt know why grown ups would want a kid. I assumed they just wanted another kid to have as their kid.
@unregisteredhypercam 12 that's exactly what happens but they also force them to dress as umpa lumpa's as it's well known all child abducters have a fetish to own an umpa lumpa
My mom told me that a stranger might steal me and I thought that all kidnappers would drive limousines so for the first 8 years in my life I had an irrational fear of limousines and rich people
I remember my mom showing me this Winnie the Pooh live action thing about this exact topic, but it was from the 80’s about the time where Disney started making shows like that off their most profitable films.
@dew drop and those Zarconians would probably tear humanity a new one once they find out how many creepy strangers their exchange student dealt with, at least I assume that's what would happen if this scenario happened.
Ok but can we take a minute to talk about how the “predators” kidnapped corny in a pickup truck like you didn’t have to use your zapper you could just stand up and hop out of the truck 😂
I've spent years trying to remember what this "movie" was. They showed it to us in daycare and it horrified all of us. Mind you we were ages three and four and WAY too young to watch this--not that even an adult should watch it...
<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1192">19:52</a> Here's the thing- The woods are not a place you get kidnapped FROM. It's a place you get kidnapped TO. My man fully enters the woods behind Corny, making sure no one is going to follow them. I guess what I'm trying to say is that something deeply traumatizing 100% happened to this alien & no one is going to believe him, because he keeps reliving the same day. This is haunting.
<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="810">13:30</a> Corny: get's abducted by nonce. He presses his zapper. Also Corny: Teleports into nonce's basement and his zapper runs out of battery.
when i was six my teacher told my entire class the most graphic “stranger danger” story and i literally think about it every day and i attribute a lot of my anxiety to it to be honest
I remember unironically watching the one with "Corny the alien" because I liked his time watch thing. Then when we watched it in first or second grade as part of a Stranger Danger program, things started to click
In the UK we learned stranger danger from a cat that spoke bollocks! "Charlie says" "meowow wrow wrow" and how to cross the road with darth vader (green cross code guy)
My dad never even let me on the street, & thus I never even had an encounter with a stranger. Dad always kept me in sight or next to him, & I was smart enough as a child to realize there are bad adults who would use things like candy or games to trick me & do whatever. So I never tried sneaking out when he was asleep or seeing my friends playing outside of their parent's sight & asking dad to let me do so too. I just figured they had crappy parents, & yeah, they did. One had a mom who just decided to leave her husband & child behind because she was bored... nice. Same happened to a girlfriend I had, but it was her dad leaving them behind. I was in a long distance relationship with her, but if I'd been close enough I'd have tracked him down & left him crippled permanently, also without the use of his crotch so he'd need a stoma (read up on that, not fun) & couldn't even find another woman.
I love how it says "Bully Smarts- For Kids," implying that there's a "Bully Smarts- For Adults." Like an entire tape of just bullying in the workplace or something. Or like an R rated version of the video.
The closest you might have to that is How to Get Revenge, a dark comedy edutainment tape from like 1989. It has Linda Blair and it's so dated, but man, it's great if you want to laugh at corny acting and terrible people doing terrible things.
The most bizarre stranger danger video of them all features Winnie The Pooh. Never mind that forest creatures don't have to worry about strangers. It morphs into an uncomfortable lesson about sexual molestation and teaching kids to run and tell their parents if someone tries to touch them in a private place ,never considering the molester might be a family member
20+ years ago both kids would ei either get detention or an in-school suspension Today both kids would be arrested and charged with some form of assault (unless they're both rich) Give it another few years and the kids'll be sent to juvie over a playground brawl
@@upyoursdotcom do you live in a small town? It's happening all over the country. It's part of the "new-and-improved" Zero Tolerance Policy in most schools. Also, I'm talking about high school students who are getting arrested, not elementary schoolers
The sad fact that these "stranger danger" videos ignore is that something like 90% of children who are abducted or sexually abused aren't the victims of strangers but of people they know (even family members) and a lot of the "stranger danger" stuff I was taught as a kid were also quite racist and classist and made the assumption that all child abductors and abusers were men (usually "hippies" "hobos" "bikers" or truly rank ethnic stereotypes) who hung out in arcades, video rental outlets and even the library) At least these videos don't perpetuate such stereotypes (instead, we have a visitor from another world and his savvy Black friend who warns him of danger). Incidentally, I DID get dragged into the bushes and mogadored on several occasions by an unkempt, uncouth ethnic man who used to be in a biker gang, but I was in my late twenties and thirties and the sex acts were entirely consensual because he was my husband.
Thank god for the last 4 words of your post, I was so sad for you. But yeah, especially with children, family and friends are overwhelmingly the cause of sexual abuse and abductions. I’m glad that it’s more well-known these days, but there’s still a long way to go.
i remember when i was around 7 someone offhandedly told me that if you let your body go limp it’s harder for someone to take you somewhere against your will.. lmao idk how well that would’ve worked for tiny child me but boyyyy did it scare the shit out of me. after that i was constantly worried that anyone would try to pick me up and take me somewhere 💀 like genuinely children will not get the message if you don’t explain the REALITY of the consequences
<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="364">6:04</a> if she asked me to get in her van I 1000% would no doubt, or hesitation I’ll be buckled in before she even has a chance to take back the offer
That "have YOU been bullied at school?" bit at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="160">2:40</a> sounded like it was leading into a law firm commercial
HOLY CRAP! I had the Get Street Smart tape as a kid. I even remember just watching it randomly. Also weird that under that make up with voice actor for Invader Zim
Ofelia/Eleanor Barajas “even if they are your dad, they are still a stranger!” Lmao!! Edit: I watched it again to get the exact quote, and no it isn’t a waste of time lol! Knees4lyfe “Maybe this video can also serve as a ‘stranger danger’ lesson. If you talk to an adult, *ever*, that looks like this guy, he’s a stranger - even if he’s like your own father. If he looks like this, *don’t trust him*.” And then goes on to say he wants to join Gus’s film hahaha!
