This Kids Movie from 1985 Is Insane

I gotta say that having an asian kid in a movie from 1985 not be a super math whiz or something is more progressive than some media now still

A couple points I recall from seeing this movie years ago that were missed here (which is fine) but that I think will make this trippy 80's movie make a bit more sense: 1. The ghosts told Michael not to use too much peanut butter. But he added more because the hair potion was too runny and he didn't want it getting in places other than his scalp. 2. The friend thought it'd be cool to have hair on his legs like an older teen or adult, so he put some of the extra on his legs. For some reason he's able to yell at the leg hair to quit growing and it does. This is never explained.

The main character's sister is so clearly a child yet has all the mannerisms of a disillusioned adult woman and my brain can't work with that.

This movie is actually part of an anthology that includes other titles like “Christmas Martians,” “The Dog Who Stopped the War,” “Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller,” and “The Case of the Witch Who Wasn’t.” They were also all made into books. The last film in this series came out in 2014.

So the "Señor" is supposed to be Spanish, has a French accent and uses Italian words? Got it.

Why is the movie so dark? Not thematically, it just looks like the entire movie was filmed in the middle of the night in a room with one tiny window that is constantly shrinking

“So they put Michael to sleep” Whoa, this movie took a dark turn...oh, you meant to bed.

What's funny to me is if the director had just substituted in an eccentric uncle or magic shop owner instead of ghosts, made the señor more wacky but ultimately friendly and harmless, and made the dad and/or the principal more malicious toward the kids then we would have a fun and lighthearted Roald Dahlian kids movie

okay why did the sister make a smoothie and say “give me your plate” ???

"Well-Dressed Bird" actually touched my soul.

Eddy totally glossed over the fact that this film has original songs performed by Celine Dion, and they were her first English-language recordings. She also filmed her first music video for one of them, ”Listen to the Magic Man”

This film is actually a documentary about what it's like to grow up in Canada.

Why do these characters have such wildly varying accents?????

I fully believed I had hallucinated this movie when I was a child. I'm not sure how I feel to know that it was a real thing that people spent money to make and distribute.

Honestly this feels like a pretty accurate representation of having Tourette's in the American school system, but instead it's hair.

Growing up in Ontario, this movie was a staple of elementary school filmstrips shown in class and general assemblies. It's a Canadian film, and our school system took a lot of pride in showing as many Canadian productions as possible. Other examples that come to mind are "Rainbow War" and "The Sweater". Fond memories.

So is no one gonna say that one of eddys patrons is named Business Vulture? Aka a well dressed bird? Ok

I remember this movie and I recall watching it as a kid and always thinking .."wtf did I just see"

Watched this in probably 1986 or 1987 with my best friend. We were too little to be WTF so we were just scared shitless. And then no one we knew had ever seen it, so it just became this shared trauma that we mention to each other from time to time when we see each other. "Do you remember The Peanut Butter Solution?" "OMG what the hell was that?"

The cast participated in a fish bowl raffle before filming. Where each slip of paper had an accent on it that they'd be randomly assigned to use in this movie.

One day, I hope to love something as much as Eddy loves Well Dressed Bird.

The father kinda strikes me as being somewhat neglectful and abusive.

I remember watching this movie as a kid. I completely forgot the whole painting thing but as soon as it came on I remembered the teacher doing that weird painting. This movie needs a How Did This Get Made.

When your dad forces you to watch this movie over and over again as a child, and you have really thick, fast growing hair. Then your dad tells you that what happens to the main character in this movie, will also happen to you. Traumatizing,

I feel like this is the kind of weird that could only work in a book. Like Roald Dahl could probably some how have found a way to make this work

I knew they would expand the Caillou Cinematic Universe

I told a friend about this movie and he ended up finding it on bluray for me. What a canadian classic, even has Celine Dion singing "listen to the magic man".

I watched this as a kid and only remembered bits and pieces. Could never explain it enough to find the name and no one else seemed to remember it. So i have spent over 20 years thinking this was a fever dream!

This movie was nominated for two Canadian film awards.

This whole movie sounds like it’d be a strange and distant dream I had and forgot about, clawing its way through my subconscious for an unknown vengeance.

I feel like I watched this movie when I was younger, seeing images from the movie activates some part of my brain that thinks I've seen it before, I look at the frames and it feels like I can remember them. Yet I cannot recall having ever watched the movie, its like the memories of it are buried deep in my subconscious mind.

My dad had to watch this movie in public school. He described it to me a couple years ago and I didn't believe it was real. He felt so vindicated when we found this vid. Thanks Eddy!

This movie apparently traumatized my mom when she was younger. And she was an adrenaline junkie. She was fine watching slasher films and rated R action movies, but this movie, for whatever reason, was the one that terrified her.

I've told people about this move, and they don't believe me it exists. For a while I was beginning to think it didn't exist. Thank you for helping me realize the past was real.

The title "the peanut butter solution" has this weirdly satisfying, mid 90s feel of picking up books and a vhs from the library after school on a Friday in the fall

I love the idea of an Asian kid working double duty, scissors in hand, constantly cutting one person's hair. I also would LOVE to be part of these meetings where a group of people designed this movie.

They should have used Gorilla Glue Spray to mount that hair.

This movie honestly feels like something I dreamed up while sick.

Fun fact: I wrote a children's book for PBS when I was a kid. It's called Mr. Sharp's Bad Day, and it's about a shark that bit his tongue off because he insisted on talking while eating. That book that I wrote in a weekend as a young child has a greater action/consequence relationship than this movie that was presumably a bit more expensive.

Gonna be honest, my reaction to the well-dressed bird was... More intense than it should have been... I don't know why, but I had a very strong emotional response to well dressed bird.

Holy shit I think the mystery of my life has been solved. I've had this very vague memory of a weird movie in the back of my head for 20+ years and I'm pretty sure this was it. The only thing I could remember was a kid going into a creepy house and weird shit happening. No wonder I couldn't remember the rest, it was too bonkers for my young mind to comprehend. I watched this movie a bunch as a kid, then completely forgot about it. Until I smoked weed/eat shrooms for the first time in my mid-twenties. Then spent 8 years with the vaguest glimpses of the movie popping into my head, but no way of finding it. Until it popped up on a torrent site one day, I watched the trailer and had this wave of trippy nostalgia. I just got that feeling again seeing the thumbnail for this vid 😵‍💫

I remember seeing this movie in the 80’s. It haunted me for decades. I couldn’t remember the name of it until about 2018, and even then I only remembered the ‘peanut butter’ part. After I fig’d it all out, and rewatched it, I am now haunted for all new reasons…some of which you pointed out here. Thanks for the ultra-obscure movie review!

So I saw this movie I think in the early 90's as a kid and it did hit me how incredibly weird it was. I never ran into anyone else who had seen it and anytime I tried to describe the plot to them other kids were like "That isn't real and doesn't exist". You have no idea how happy I was to find out people online knew what it was and were properly sketched out by it

This movie was free on Canadian cable and I was really young when I stumbled upon it, I was so scared of being locked in a cage to be forced to make paintbrushes. That genuinely became my phobia as a child😂

How did the kid get downstairs without knowing he was bald? Imagine all of your hair "let's go of your skull" in the middle of the night. You wake up - surrounded by your hair in your bed. You are not calmly going down to breakfast. You are freaking out about all the hair in your bed. Such a weird movie.
