Stratos jet is the newest line of private personal light jets. They've been making noise for quite some time now and 2 years ago the company took a big step forward by bringing in a real world model of their single engine, single pilot jet.
Last time we were at Oskosh EAA Airventure, I had the opportunity to see the Statos jet prototype, the 714. If you missed that review, here it is • Stratos Jet Can now Be...
Since revealing the model jet, Stratos has been on a mission to get their aircraft certified, hence the 716x model. Some major improvements have been made to this new ready to build model private jet. The 716X compared to the 714 is 40% longer but also 400 lbs lighter in weight. This is evident when you see the plane in person. You step into that cabin and you'll see just the amount of extra leg room there is. Being an experimental aircraft, Stratos 716x jet can only be built through a build assist program. And your standard avionics is the Garmin G3X touch.
The cost?
- $2.3 million for the kit
- $200k for the build assist.

This plane looks a whole lot like the 1950s Grumman F-9f Panther fighter. Paint it navy blue with a yellow speed stripe and you have a modern rendition of the 1949 to 1954 US navy Blue Angles Panthers. Very sleek and pretty. Look like a sexy jet.

That’s it’s only benefit, 7k asl higher ceiling to get through weather. At similar cost to E1000GX, operating costs are much higher, range is nearly 40% less, load is substantially less and interior space substantially less. What mission profile does this aircraft make ANY $ense vs E1000GX or TBM940?

​​@@MichaelM-to4sg Those are prop planes though. Some people just want a jet, practical or not. TBM 940 is also $4+ million dollars!! Cirrus Jet is 2.5 million or about the same as this Stratos Jet.

Nice plane, I’m sure Cirrus hopes this plane never gets certified. This plane has a more jet like speed and service ceiling compared to the Cirrus Jet.

@@23aviatorguy I dunno about eyesore - but the Cirrus jet looks so unique, it could be a UFO. This thing looks sexier - quite similar actually to the D-Jet; too bad Diamond couldn't get that certified. Cheers.

@@nevillec5252 eyesore is a bit harse, I almost for got about the D Jet not sure why that fell through. Even Piper's dream of having a single engine jet fell apart. Hopefully Stratos will have a better ended.

The sf 50 has cruise of only 300 knots and a ceiling of 30k which still gives you weather to contend with. Have to also ultimately see what the range differences will be as well.

Mike, I can see you in the pilot seat! Ha ha! I was looking at the Cirrus at $2.5 million and very disappointed it was so expensive. But, that's because it costs so much money to develop these planes and get them certified.

Really want this to get certified. I'm doing Cirrus training now and doing the logical SR20 > 22 > Vision progression. Would be amazing to be able to go to this aircraft as the transition will be single engine jet to the same type.

I love the looks, most beautiful in its class. Problem is, your shoulder was on the other seat when you sat down. It looks too narrow in the cabin. If I'm in the position to afford this type of plane I will pay a bit more and go with the Honda. I trust their two engines, safety features, practicality and engineering history. But I absolutely love the looks of this one here. Imagine it in cobalt grey! Awesome. Great presentation from you Mike. Thanks.

I think what this Aircraft needs is 2 fans that feed air into the internal engine or whatever it is. That way even at FL410 there is one fan running to keep the cabin pressurized and also feed air into the main section of the engine

I prefer : 2 engine, 2 tail , spaced wider then fuselage, air inlet on top & just behind the radar dome, albatross plane. What I don't prefer is the price 😁

Very nice, it’s funny how a conventionally designed aeroplane has so much more appeal. Interesting to note how long it’s taken for military style intakes (from the 50’s) to appear on civil aircraft, certainly gives it that “Lockheed” look!

The Honda jet is more impressive on the inside where it comes to style. However, this jet kills the Honda jet from the outside and the inside is nothing to scoff at. I would take Stratos over the Honda jet because it's au way better bargain, and you would be happier because it's way sexier.

They are completely different classes of aircraft- the Stratos os s ingle engined kit aircraft, the honda is a twin engine production aircraft.

What happens if you purchase the 716X as an experimental and subsequently, Stratos gets certification for the jet, does that mean your 716X will then be certified? Or will that only apply to aircraft built post certification?

Enjoy your presentations and enthusiasm always. Love the jet but wouldn't spend the bucks on a single engine aircraft, needs to be a twin. They don't need to worry, I'm more in the jet taste but Cub budget category, so I'm just a random commentary category. 2.5 million for a kit LOL

SETP’s have superb safety record. We’re switching from our Solitaire to E1000GX when our turn in wait list comes through in ‘23. The operating costs, cabin & cockpit space and speed made sense. This aircraft however makes zero sense for our mission profile. I cannot see any mission profile where this aircraft approaches the capabilities of E1000GX or TBM940

god i hate the 150, unless youre time building fly a 172. the 172 i flew last week only did 90kts you won't even move in a 150 with a headwind

It looks nice but it's the same money as the SF50 and the Cirrus has CAPS, auto land and G3000 avionics. Not really seeing the value here.

The tradeoff is that this one is 100kts faster, flights 10k ft higher and has more payload capacity.

Not the same price. This aircraft, the certified version, is $3.5M entry. That over $1M higher than the Cirrus

So this is basically 50% more than a DA50 NG? $2.3M is a lot but when you consider that a 172 is $400,000 these days…. That’s a decent deal.

Imagine paying 2.5M for a plane and getting a G3X, Cirrus seems like a no brained until they get this certified.

SF50 is slow, expensive to operate, minimal range, minimal payload. This aircraft is at least fast but more expensive to operate and limited range. A E1000GX or TBM940 destroys this aircraft on most any mission profile

@@MichaelM-to4sg yeah agree, single engine very light jets are a strange category. Most of the time the mission is a private owner that wants to fly a jet so he can brag about it and show off on the ramp.

@@experimental_av I have hanger neighbor w/M2. It’s at least fast but operating costs are extraordinary, nearly 3x our Solitaire, which itself is expensive by tp standards. When I told him we were shopping the TBM940 & E1000GX, he flew to Bend with us to demo the E1000GX. We both put deposits down that afternoon. The M2 & Phenom 100EV are likely the best vlj’s on market. I just don’t see viable market for this aircraft or SF50. Even the Honda Jet has such short range and not enough speed to offset its short range. That said, I’ve seen a lot of Honda Jets the last couple years.

@@experimental_av I suppose. It’s annual sales are 75, nearly matching PC12. I’ve been told the overwhelming majority of sales are from Cirrus owners. It’s a step-up aircraft from SR-22.

You would also be burning more fuel and maintain 2 engines as well. It would also be less aerodynamic as there are 2 engines mounted on the wing

@@alexgeorge2993 I agree but take into consideration that because of the range of both airplanes means that you won't be crossing oceans anytime soon so if anything does go wrong, you would be able to land on the ground. Also, these days, the chance of an engine failure is much lower than in the earlier days and even if a engine does fail, you will be able to glide it in for a landing. So would you be willing to pay an extra 2 million just for a plane with similar performance and higher operating costs but with more safety?

It's a long expensive process to get the airplane certified and then, surprise, surprise, you have to start the process all over again to get the mfg facility certified. Ask Cirrus.
