What’s the Stripes movie about?
Hard-luck cabbie John Winger (Bill Murray from Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day), directionless after being fired from his job and dumped by his girlfriend, enlists in the U.S. Army with his close pal, Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis from Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day). After his barely satisfactory performance in basic training, the irreverent Winger emerges as the figurehead for a ragtag band of Army misfits. However, his hijinks threaten to cause an international scandal when he inadvertently commandeers a military assault vehicle behind enemy lines.

That movie was great. In 1981, I was only 18 years old when it came out in the theater. The uniforms were the old Army Greens. The whole cast was great. This video was One of my favorite parts of the movie. Great movie. Thanks 👍.

@@snake9911 Howdy! I was in about a year when we switched. Had to buy all new uniforms! The new BDUs were a lot better and more practical. But there were so many more POCKETS, sometimes it was hard to remember which pocket you put something in! 😀 I was an MP in the 1st Cavalry Division (545th MP Co.), Ft. Hood, TX, as my primary duty station. The 545th was switched to ALASKA in recent years! Mighty happy to have been able to be in the 1st Cav! Nice to meet you!

@@NickvonZ Thank you for your service. I went in the reserves at first, then I switched to the Army National Guard. I went to Basic training and AIT at Fort Benning in 1986 and 1987 for AIT. I was 11C. In basic training I was so scared because of the Drill Sargents I had. I could tell that one of them wished I wasn't there. Once again, Thanks 👍.

@@snake9911 And Thanks to you, too! I felt the same way about my DSs as well, for a bit. My Basic and AIT was OSUT, meaning that we had the same unit and DSs for both. We just had a weekend in between. All our DSs were MPs as well as being DSs. And they treated us just like it was Basic in AIT, as well. But I think that made it really solid training. Golf Foxtrot Tango, in fact! 😸👍 I had felt as you did about the DSs for the first few weeks. Immediately after AIT, I had a real LOVE for Drill Sergeants and seriously thought of going to Cadre Training and becoming a DS myself. But after my original 3 years plus a 2 year extension, I was feeling a little burned out on the military. So I ETSed. We both had GREAT experience when Basic was a wild ol' time! They SURE aren't singing the same cadences today that we were singing, I bet! 😆 BEST WISHES to ya'!

I still love how they go into the recruiting office, immediately sign the contract and get on the bus. No ASVAB, MEPS, nothing. Kinda like going straight from basic to Italy on a “special project” bypassing AIT. 😂😂😂

@@The2ndFirst yes, AFTER taking the ASVAB FIRST. That’s what determines which MOS or “Job” you qualify for. What I was saying was that it’s a lengthy process and nothing like they show here. You go talk to the recruiter, he asks what you would like to do, he sets up a time to take the ASVAB, and then tells you whether or not you qualify for your dream job. Then, you go to MEPS to take your physical and some processing. Then a little later, you go back to MEPS a second time to finish up, and leave for basic. It isn’t a one day deal from walking into the recruiting office, to getting on the bus to leave for basic lol.

@@bigdaddy7119 It's not the process it was in the 80s and 90s anymore. Now at the time, yes, they had to all the things you say. They only have so long for the movie. Sitting around with a thumb up your ass for hours holding onto a manilla envelope waiting your chance to get a finger up your butt and getting to duck walk doesn't sell tickets.

I joined at 18. That was 1981. We waited at reception station for two weeks for boot camp to start. The last night before we started they let all of us go to the movie theater. Stripes. The irony of the story was that they went to Italy. My first duty assignment as well. When I got there kinda thought those guys would be waiting.😄

If only joining the army, was that easy. Got to take a written test to see if you even qualify. Then MEPS and now you have to wait anywhere from a month to five months to get shipped. Then once you get to your training base, you’re in reception for about 7 to 10 days. After that, you get on a bus and go down range for 9 to 16 weeks. Depending on if you have OSUT or a different BCT and AIT in separate locations.
