Eddie is arguably one of the most explosive strongmen ever. His lifts were always characterised by short explosive rapid movements and it was very rare to see him grind out a lift or technically finess the stages like a lot of the other athletes do. In upper body he was famous for his unique axle press (where he held the world record) as he never set the bar after the clean and just exploded straight through using the elastic tension he had stored in the position. No one else really does it this way. Likewise on the deadlift, he was extremely rapid off the floor and Eddie

As someone who has completed in both sports I would like to clarify the differences between powerlifting and strongman. Powerlifting has three lifts: squat, bench and deadlift. You get three attempts at each lift during a meet. You combine your highest lifts and get a total, highest total wins. Powerlifting prioritizes strength over everything else. Strongman generally has 5 events per competition. The events often have ties back to the circus and are always designed to be an impressive feat of strength. There are honestly too many events to list here but they are often for time and can be physically very grueling. Something like a very heavy CrossFit event that only lasts 1 to 2 minutes. Strongmen are both powerful and athletic for short bursts. I would say strongman training is the perfect strength and conditioning for sumo.
@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935
I basically think of it as, bodybuilder: aesthetic(hypertrophy, chizzled muscle), powerlifter: explosiveness(clean and snatch, singular lift and drop), strongman: take the weight and carry/move it over a distance.
@Schrodingers_kid
@Schrodingers_kid Год назад
How do you even train for strongman? Just train every muscle for strength and explosiveness?
@richardpeterson4440
@richardpeterson4440 Год назад
It varies a great deal. Personally I structure my training on 4 developmental days: squat, bench, deadlift and overhead press. Each of those days will have 3 phases. Explosive (box jump), strength (back squat) then hypertrophy (leg extensions). There are fancy sport science reasons for this. The 5th day is reserved for practicing events. This way I can go to my local strongman gym and use more specialized equipment. As I get closer to a comp I start to cut hypertrophy and focus more and more on strength, explosiveness and event specific work. Sometimes going to 2 event days. There is also bleed over. For example log is a great developer and event practice. Go look up Alex Bromley here on RU-vid if you want more ideas he is a great resource.

I hope people are aware of (or would like to research) the absolute legend that was Chiyonofuji Mitsugu, known as The Wolf - a somewhat smaller sumo wrestler in the 1980s who made up for his lack of size with strength (he was very muscly) and perfect technique, tactics, and warrior spirit to become one of the most dominant wrestlers of recent times... I'm 33 now, but in my mid teens me and some friends unintentionally created a sumo adjacent sport. It was 1v1, and we were playing tug of war with a baseball bat, on a full size mattress. If you let go of the bat with both hands, you lost. If you touched the ground outside the mattress, you lost. No striking. If I refined the idea, I'd want to replace the bat with something shaped like the top half of a bowling pin on both ends, and replace the mattress with a similar sized, circular mat on the ground. It was fun because you could switch from a tug of war to a pushing match in a split second. If you were losing at one, you could switch to the other, but if you're winning, you still needed to keep in mind that the other guy could swith tactics, so anything you did needed to minimize the risk of sudden style switch. Or obviously you could go all in on one tactic, and try to brute force your way through it. It ended up being more complex than initially expected. I suppose you might be able to include grappling/submissions as a way of winning/losing as well. We never tested that. Obviously the difficulty there is trying to execute a submission with at least one hand still clutching the bat. I'm fully intending on becoming a high school teacher, and when I do, I'm gonna pitch this idea to any phyd ed teacher and coach.

Well put. Best thing I can say to add to this is google Venn diagram of the UK or British Isles if you want an idea of the breakdown. I think a lot of the confusion comes from the fact that the British Royal Family is based out of London as is the parliament. Add to that, it is the biggest nation in the UK too. So, people often conflate England to mean UK and can use them interchangeably. Then trying to explain that the Island of Ireland is split into two countries of (Republic of) Ireland and Northern Ireland... then add on places like the Channel Islands to confuse things even further. It also doesn't help that in sports it can differ as well... Olympics, its the whole of the UK. Then in football (soccer), rugby union, and various others, each of the countries in the UK are represented... but the Irish rugby team is made up of players from both parts of Ireland just to be different.

So, all in all, the UK is a nation consisting of four countries, but each of these is an individual country. That’s probably the most important thing to be aware of as Scots, for example, despise being called English. 😖 Also, some people are not fond of their nationality being referred to as British as this is technically not a nationality but a citizenship. Americans often use Britain as an interchangeable word for England which is why describing an English accent as a British accent is a bit of a misnomer as a British accent is also a Scottish, Irish or Welsh accent which Americans often identify as separate distinct things.

In all the things Eddie tries he works very hard on structure and dialing in the basic movements. That's the strongman competitor, because if anything is structurally a little off it could mean things failing under *VERY* heavy loads.

The name of the actual island that England, Scotland and Wales are on is Britain. Mostly, when people say Britain these days (or Great Britain), they are saying it in reference to the United Kingdom as a whole. This includes England, Scotland, Wales and northern Ireland. Yes, there are whales off the coast of Wales. Great video, as usual!

Please break down more Sumo matches. It’s really under appreciated combat sport and it’s very fascinating. It would be cool for you to break down your favourite Japanese pro matches for instance. There other channels that do that, but since you are obviously pretty talented at it would be cool to learn more about sumo with you. PS. United Kingdom. So there’s several. United States. There’s more than one. It’s pretty easy. Wales is the most important kingdom like Pennsylvania is actually pretty much USA. Rest of them you learn to remember as you go along. PPS. EU is not same as France

The British Isles is a set of islands off the coast of France, the largest of which is Great Britain, which is formed of countries: England, Wales, and Scotland. The second largest is the Island of Ireland, which contains two countries: the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (which is relatively small). There are other smaller islands too which are mostly owned by the various countries of the British Isles. The United Kingdom is like a country of countries, containing all three of the countries of Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland) plus Northern Ireland. The UK is really like the 'official' country. There is political alignment across the UK, for example, all countries of the UK are subject to UK parliament/law which is based in London. However, there is also some amount of devolvement to Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is a completely separate country from the UK subject to its own law/governance.

This is the simplest way to explain Brits England, Scotland and Wales are kingdoms (Northern Ireland is a territory I believe) that make up the United Kingdom. The big island is called Britain. Britain, Ireland, and the others are called the British Isles. People from England are called English, Scotland has the Scottish, Wales has the Welsh, Northern Ireland has the Irish, and they can all technically be called "British." There are others like Manx or Scouse but this is already long enough.

Great to watch, and fun. I hadn't realised there was so much to Sumo until i saw some of your videos. And yes the UK, Great Britain, the British Isles and England are different. UK= Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England British Isles includes the islands, some 6,000 of them. Includes the UK and Eire (Republic of Ireland). Great Britain is the largest island in the British Isles and includes mainland Scotland, England and Wales. And England is a country as are Wales and Scotland. Each of these has their own capital city, flag, national day, football team (translation -"soccer"). I had to go to a police station in Jordan to get a visa extension and the police asked me to describe the difference. Not sure what would have happened if I had got it wrong (probably nothing, they were friendly, but it did feel like a test). And Eddie had a great attitude.

I'm *very* late to this, 2:33 but, Britain is the island where England, Wales and Scotland lay. Though it's usually used to refer to the three countries, sometimes used instead of The UK. The UK consist of the three countries mentioned prior as well as Northern Ireland. Important thing to note, the Irish whether from Republic of Ireland or Nothern Ireland tend to not be very enthusiastic about getting called British.

“Britain” usually refers to England, Scotland and Wales together. England is a country, Wales is a country and Scotland is a country; together they’re referred to as “Britain”. If you add Northern Ireland then that becomes the “United Kingdom” (or “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” to give it its full name). There is also a different between “Britain” and “Great Britain”. I’ve already explained what “Britain” is but “Great Britain” is the name of the island that has the 3 countries of England, Scotland and Wales on it.

At the end Ed was asking him about becoming the champion, and he got the nod. He is way beyond most sumo wrestlers in strength even now, he can do damage. Eddie isn't the quickest man, but he does have torqy muscle and more square-ish structure to him, so it kinda offsets somewhat. As far as competing drug-free, Eddie is on a good TRT dose though, so idk if he can compete.

His heart is the right size for his frame, not his mass. In order to maintain that he has to have very little cardio in his regime as this would reenlist slow twitch fibres globally and divert resources from the recovery of superficial muscles which his steroid regime facilitates by taking him outside the range of normal hormonal fluctuation. That is why he is gassed.

I think of sumo wrestlers as strongmen and as for western strongmen I think they would transition just fine into the sport. I worry about the brutal nature of the sport, the lifestyle, and the high risk of injury, but there is no doubt they could compete for Yokozuna given the time and dedication. A younger strongman Brian Shaw moving to live in Isegahama would no doubt become Yokozuna for sure. Being able to regularly lift the Thomas Inch dumbell, with two hands is 360lbs of free hand strength at almost all times with belt grip. That's 95% of all competition.

I'd pay to see Brian Shaw in sumo. Brian Shaw is 6'8" and about 440 lbs which bumps up to close to 475 lbs when competing. He is absurdly huge and makes Eddie look small in comparison. Both Eddie and Brian are also extremely competitive with each other so the two of them in sumo would be a legit match because neither would tolerate losing to the other. Brian Shaw is one of those genetic freaks that would dominate many different sports if he tried just based on being a giant. In the 80s Hulk Hogan used to brag about his 26 inch biceps and Brian's forearms are about that big.

Britain is a combination of four separate nations, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. They are joined under The Acts Of The Union. Together they form a singular construct of Brittania or Britain, similar to how the individual States make up the United States, which is also a Union. There is no 'British' race of people though. We have ancient 'Britons' which is something different and have long been mixed into the dominate present day races. But the races are English, Scots, Irish & Welsh. Hope that helps.
