Tinkering with little toy dozer.Got new 'link belts' for it at the end of the day, will try them tomorrow,if successfull, this will be a keeper machine that will be fun again.
I had the same orange Link-belts on my 1967 D-8H to drive the alternator. It saved from having to take the 3 large fan belts off plus a bunch of fan guard removal.
I remember those being advertised in magazines like popular mechanics. Dad can I have one of those? The answer that came back, son, I don't have $18.00 let alone $1800.
Yes I work on mine for about an hour and then go push around some dirt for 2 or 3 minutes work on it for another 5-10 minutes attempt to go push some more dirt work on it some more and then it sits for a few days but it is fun when it's running right the belts are pain in the ass though
Awesome toy... It reminds me of the late '60's early '70's small train my grandfather had in the backyard that had seats in the cars and you could tow half the neighborhood kids in it at one time.
If you do convert it over to hydrostatic drive, just go to a wrecker and get a hydrostatic ride on mower and use it for your drive parts. Would be a fun project.
struckcorp.com/ they are still being made, the current it KIT is designated the RS196 the other bigger models are assembled and much more dare I say professionally useful. Parts including OE belts are still available (at least the last time I checked)
I can totally understand why the belt drive was dropped years ago in favor of fluid power.Wish there was a list of the proper matched components to convert it proper without any guessing.
Your very right! Mine was a struck Magnatrac Jr.. Had a homemade box blade on the back and the loader bucket on front.. Woulda been more usefull with the blade.. Replacing the belts was a pain and cost ya over $100 cause ya need 6! I used the automotive black gator back belts. The green lawnmower type like u said don't hold up to the heat and wear out quickly
When i saw it on craigslist years ago,i was out there so fast to pick it up,it was like an emergency.Glad i got it,now its therapy and grown up kid entertainment to play on it.Glad it running after these years of sitting. One cant run it without a smile. And thats saying a lot coming from me.
Don't know if it was a trick of the camera but the left reverse pulley flange was bent badly. V pulleys do not last forever especially when working in dust, at some point they wear to the point of not being able to touch the full v of the belt. You seem to have some ability with hydraulics, why not do a little shopping and change it up to hydraulic drive? It seems worth it as it is a useful machine.
please throw a neodymium magnet into the fuel tank.. to collect all the loose sediment.. clean the fuel line with a chunk of speedometer cable in a variable speed drill like a sewer snake.. install a 10 micron fuel filter before the fuel pump or carb if its a gravity feed.. use a 1990 ford ranger fuel filter. they have 5/16 barbs you can push and clamp hoses to.. and i know those are 10 micron rated. i do this on everything with a carb.. cars and pickups. for some reason some fuel filters are 70 micron.. probably so they won't clog as much. everything gets a neodymium magnet in the fuel tank.. plastic tanks i use 2.. one on the inside and one on the outside holding the one on the inside in place.. with some silicone over the outside one to prevent it from coming off.
cleaned the carb(after sitting for 3 years or more) yesterday 4 times,it finally runs, idles, and starts good, jet plugged up,needle float stop stiff, etc. ran good today.
The track chains might be fully stretched out and have no adjustment left. If you need to make new tracks, they should use CA557 chain with 1/4 thick AR200 steel for the pads. At least that is how the newer machines are.
I always thought about one of those but running the real ones I never did. Those links might just do the trick. I've seen them on a lot of odds and ends but never a dozer. YOu'll get it, Pal.
@skadill How do you power the hydraulic pump? Is there a second pulley coming off of the engine? Also, this seems pretty quiet. Is the engine a Tecumseh H70 or something else? And if so, what kind of exhaust system are you running? Thanks
chevy power steering pump on back running inline with v belt coming direct off rear shaft under seat area with additional 3 inch pulley. Just no name 8hp chinese knock off engine, has aa piece of welded metal tube to extend exhaust out to the front. Sold this couple years ago. Not the greatest machines ever built.Hydraulic drive all around would be way to go, belt always coming off and burning up.
Link belts melt fast, i will be completely surprised if a link belt lasts 2 minutes, if you can even get it adjusted right id be surprised. Best chance would be to use a section of used link belt so its pre stretched and the links are all fit to one another. Link belts are not for applications where a belt is being engaged and disengaged, they need to be tensioned and left alone. Pls post a follow up and i hope it works i really do for you.
@@skadill ok, ive never used stuff that expensive, it is surely better stuff than what ive used around my shop. I hope that equates and you have better luck than me. I remember trying it on all sorts of equipment and machines. I got mine from grizzly, probably about the same as what i could have bought at harbor freight. A small air compressor got the belting hot enough to slip and pretty much instantly turned it into melted black goop on the sheave. It did better in my tablesaw but again it didnt hold up. I align pulleys, i dont build or work on garbage, it wasn't my error.
Got it moving today with new belts, but i dont think its a forever fix, probably just a bandaid for a day solution, however the link be;lt is easy to repair or re install if it lets go.
Since it is so hard to change belts I would change the belt type to the heavier B category as those are class A They should last longer. The Class B are almost twice as wide, the hard part is finding pulleys that size. I would do it during the summer when the belts are easier to work with. Hope this helps.
Thats actually a good idea, but a 5 hrs to do a swap and near $500 for link belts, and all new oversized pulleys,it would be no worse a job just to go with hydraulic drives.
@@skadill That would be the way I would go. Probably could get all the stuff from Princess auto cheap cheap. Doesn't have to be high end stuff, it just has to work.
Bruce Thomas my wife will not go for me to get a new one for my 4 year old grandson just get on my Facebook page an see how much he runs my equipment ruff as it is. She already caught me about to run over and get a small excavation for him at 10000
Seems there was a option. A few were sold as kit crawlers. The Magna-Track has gone back to one kit model. The large model two or three years ago was 30 hp.
@@rogermarshall8991 I'd like to have a loader/hoe but I can get a worn out runnable one for that much. Or less, maybe. I better stick to warming other peoples seats instead of my own. It works better like that.
Not a glowing review. Did you buy this new from a dealership ? I keep getting emails from Struck. I don't like the belt drive system, very Mickey Mouse setup. Informative Presentation 🚜👍
