I'm not going to read it, and here is why. I watched your video to get ideas because my dad asked me to take him shopping to update his wardrobe. However. there were zero specific examples......Seriously, show this video to someone, and ask them to put together an outfit. I bet they can't. So given that, why should I be motivated to read what you wrote?
I am 59 years old and am grateful and honor to expess my style and age appropriately. I have been told I do not look my age numerous of times. I've dress how I feel for the occassion. Sometimes my style range from dressing up to dressing down chic when I go out. high end items mix with low end items at times. I lovd white button down shirts, Blazers, Dark Jeans, sometimes distress jeans, luv blk ,white or beige and grey turtle necks in winter. Coats are wool for winter, cashmere, fur coats I had for years. Leather coats and jackets. hats are caps and dress hats and casual caps. variety of dress and casual shoes and dress boots. ties, ect. cuff links amost. scarfs from sheer to silk to cashmere. I feel dress how you feel and keep items well maintain. I know if a item of clothing is to young for me and I can not pull it off I would never try to dress like I am twenty plus. 40s style I can get away with if it is sophisticated and elegant at my age of 59 currently.
Thank you sir for making this video. I’m also in my sixties and your video has enlightened me as to where to start looking and what style to concentrate. I hope that you can continue to create more videos for men in their sixties. I retired 20 years in the Army and I want to thank you for your service. Semper Fi my friend!
Believe it or not but I notice what Liev Schreiber’s character wears from the show Ray Donovan. Dark jeans, dress shirts and sports coat. No sneakers unless at the gym or on a run / bike ride. I don’t know but I get compliments and that feels good for the ego. Guys also get a couple accessories like decent sunglasses and a decent watch. There you go fellas. I’ll be starting my channel soon too. Hahaha
#1: If you’re over 40 - and you still have a full head of hair - SHOW IT OFF!!! So many men think shaving their head makes them look, younger... well IT DOESN’T!!! Don’t cut it short, leave it a bit long. That doesn’t mean have a ponytail... but don’t have it so short that it looks like you’ve painted it on! Have FUN with your hair! Women color their hair all the time. If you want to... COLOR IT!!! #2 Stay thin! What ever it takes... exercise, diet, good foods, whatever!!! No one thinks fat looks good - not even on Santa!! #3 Get some color in your skin. No one thinks pale or grey skin looks healthy. Why do you think women wear makeup? Go outside! Walk, run, jog, get a hobby that will get you enjoying the outdoors and sunshine. #4 SHAVE. If you want to grow a beard - fine. But if you can’t - or if all you can manage is a silly “neck beard” then DON’T PRETEND that you can. And don’t play the new “fuzzy” look. Clean shaven always looks younger and better. And it looks like you CARE about yourself. #5 Dress appropriately for the occasion. Don’t dress down for a formal situation. Likewise, don’t dress up for a casual setting. Pay attention to dress codes and where you are going. If you are approaching 50, ease off on the sweater and pipe look. Opt out for a leather jacket instead. Take out the ear ring. It didn’t work in the 70’s or 80’s and it still doesn’t work! Those are my suggestions!
Agreed. I'm 50, have a head full of hair and let it grow slightly long. Having fun with it. Plus I hit the gym. Got my first tatt for my 47th bday and looking to add a 3rd in the near future. I dress according to what looks right on me.
I'm a 5'5" man at 64. I have a 27" inseam. I've also worked out in the gym for the past 45 years. My body type is very athletic. I've learned that some one like myself needs to wear tapered dark slim jeans and to get them altered to fit my short legs. I've also learned that I feel more my age wearing some nice casual dress boots, instead of tennis shoes, to make me look and feel more mature. A nice long sleeve dress shirt, that matches your skin tone, with dark slim jeans looks great, with a belt to match the dress shoes. During the cooler times of the year I'll wear a dark pull over sweater, crew neck or v-neck. Yes I'm 64 but I don't want to look like an old man.
@@lorrimiller7010 Not true. Take a look into who the most successful Thoroughbred jockey's are dating and married to. You will be amazed at the tall, beautiful women who find confident, successful men, who can control 1200 lbs of horse flesh at full gallop, quite sexy in spite of their diminutive stature. Remember, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog." Only a person with a "small mind" like yourself, would discount a man solely on his physical stature. Even when they do, the short man is likely being spared the headache of dealing with a small minded woman. So many women think that because they have the "pootie" that they are in control, but this is only true when it comes to low value simps. When they encounter a real man, the script is flipped and they become addicted to the man who is a competent lover and leader.
Having been in the Navy for 20 years deciding what to wear to work was no problem ... it was a Uniform. Your site and info is very helpful, even a casual lay back guy like me can look better and appropriate for my age. Thanks for good input and advice.
I am 76, and I have a very careful not to be overweight by eating correctly. I can wear 30 in waist shorts and look good. It is about being secure over you are when you get older. It all boils down by taking care of your body.
Good points, my take. first envision your individual style. Nothing is really off the table within reason. Look at others for styling sense to see what work and what does not work for you. Consider your the image you wish to project. Consider all yours features, the good and opportunities and your body type. That's your starting point.
Thanks for addressing the needs of the older gentlemen. Since 60 is just around the corner for me, I found your video to be inspirational and motivating. I look forward in discovering more of your videos for the older man.
Really did not give advice on what to wear except don't dress like a teenager. How about more practical advice and pictures of what to and what to not wear? Guys in their 60's are retiring. We want tips on casual wear, what to wear day to day, running errands, etc. what's appropriate for summer, etc.
Antonio, this is why you are #1 in this industry and have the large number of subscribers that you do. Bravo Zulu my friend. Well said and completely honest and correct. Your Sr. SNCO's taught you well lol. Every one out there should watch and subscribe to your channel and those who are in the industry should take note and learn from you. What more can I say except, outstanding. Semper Fi.
Great advice Antonio, and don't think we don't need it. Today's 60 year olds were teenagers during Disco, and in college during the stonewashed, blow-dried 80's. What the hell do we know from fashion. LOL
Thank you for your service and expertise. I'm 66, and paresis, (disabled), i walk slow, and neuropathy in my feet. I'll be traveling to Italy, for a few weeks. Thank you.
From a 55 year old: Dickies classic slacks are a great start to a 50 yr old + Saturday outfit. Then decide on short, etc.. Don’t forget bling like a nice watch! 😀
There are at least 820 “likes” of this video, yet many of the public comments are quite harsh. I’m a believer that constructive criticism is far more effective than some of the comments which come across as a personal attack of Ricardo. Perhaps, room for improvement with the content, but I appreciate the time and effort Ricardo put into this video. I believe Ricardo is highly regarded by his peers, in the You Tube Fashion Commentary Community. Looking forward to seeing more of your work, Ricardo.
Antonio, thanks GREAT advice for those of us who have seen five decades+ pass....and you are SPOT ON when you talk about ripped/torn/shredded jeans....what idiot thought that was a good fashion idea? In the not so distant future people will look at those who wore ripped/torn/shredded jean the same way people now look at the once trendy men’s leisure suit. There is a reason classic men’s fashion/style stay looking great....it’s a classic! 👍
Thanks for your useful advice. I am above 50, and I absolutely agree not to dress like a 20 year old. We should dress appropriately for our age. Appreciate it !
Antonio, I am sure there is good information in there some where, but If I wast to be preached to I will go to church. I am 75 years old and I have no problem finding nice, well tailored suits and jackets. I prefer Brooks Brothers, Hickey Freeman and Hart Schaffner Marx, but I do have a jacket from Kohl's. A polyester gold summer garb. My tastes cost a little more but never go out of style. They are much much cheaper in the not so long run. It is out of print now, but picked up a copy of Dress for Success and learn something. This is the second video I tried to watch. I doubt if I will try a third.
Just hitting 50: Thank you very much for this video. I would love to see more videos for those over 50. (I just lost 100 lbs so I have to buy an entirely new wardrobe, so I have been really enjoying your site as I plan.
Congratulations 1964 on losing all that weight. I hope you did not use one of those fad diets or something more drastic. The best way to loose weight and keep it off is portion control and some exercise. As far as fashion wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident.
Normally, I would agree 100% on the rule "don't dress like a teenager when over 40" ( I personally know more than one guy who might well benefit from the advise)..but I also know a 58 Y O pal who looks amazing wearing rather modern clothes, and indeed looks weird when dressing "his age". And I have a problem with the notion about "society expectations". Apart from a business context, I don't see any reason to comply with them. Just wear what fits you, the people who would criticize your unruly behavior won't feed you when you'll be hungry...
Excellent advice. I might also add wearing a quality watch - really makes a statement that is very often noticed. The Panama hat (a GOOD one, not some department store knock-off) is practical and stylish. Vests are great and don't have to be stodgy 3-piece suits, a patterned vest with some color can be elegant and dapper - I can't begin to describe the positive comments I've gotten when I pull an antique pocket watch out of my vest pocket to check the time. I'm in tech, and people are blown away by the contrast (it also emphasizes that "old" can still be cool and functional!) Great vid!
I'm 56 and I'm in pretty good shape, I wear jeans and boots tee shirts..i work out ,working on a six pack abs..i act the same way iv always acted..i make everybody lol,,I'm my self..love me or hate me..i don't give a hoot
Over 35 year ago I read a book based on the guidelines for business and casual attire published by IBM for their sales staff and executives, titled "Dress For Success." It is as relevant today as it was back then. I don't put a whole lot of stock in what happens to be the current trends in fashion for the follow reason, (this also describes my rule of thumb and philosophy for how to dress), "What's in fashion, is NOT always in good taste. However, what's in good taste, IS ALWAYS in fashion." I have a single piece of advice of my own, NEVER dress like Regis Philbin, a rap star or most any way a teenage boy dresses and you should be good to go. To date, that philosophy has always served me well.
I’m retired military and currently a defense contractor who spends some time each year in the AOR. I’m mid 50’s, and I only feel comfortable wearing “off duty” military type attire. I’m sure some people might not know what I’m talking about, so I’ll explain. For my shirts, I wear tactical style polos, brands such as 511s. But the main thing is that polos are my thing, most any normal looking polo will do. For my pants, I wear brands like Columbia, I guess they call them hiking pants or something like that. I consider them tactical pants. As far as my footwear, I prefer wearing military style boots and my favorites are the light tan colored desert boots that we used to wear about 15 years ago in Iraq. Under no circumstances will I leave the house wearing jeans, t-shirt, and sneakers. If you are 50, that stuff needs to only be used when you are in the yard working. I plan on using this look for the rest of my life, I think it will still work in my 80’s. Thoughts?
I just turned 50 and my biggest problem is finding what to wear when I run errands (supermarket, homedepot, target). I live in hot South Florida and I usually end up making the mistake of wearing gym clothes when I do those errands. The imposter syndrome kicks in when I do that. Maybe I would feel better if I will run those errands after I workout, but I don't go to the gym. Any suggestions? A video with this subject would be helpful. Thanks.
Both you and neilcoo just need to pump your breaks. Obviously you just listened to the video BUT didn't pay attention to it. Wearing a sport coat, a tie or even a Panama Hat, doesn't make you a carbon copy of your Grandfathers. What the gentleman in the video was saying was that you have to find a style that works for you BUT a style that's appropriate for a gentleman in your age group. And this may come as a shock to both you and neilcoo but that's not hard to do. The reason I know you two didn't pay attention to what this guy was saying was because you didn't catch the word "classics." A Panama Hat, sport coat and a tie are just a few of the items that men 50+ who understand style and pinache, have as staples in their wardrobe. A classic watch, cuff links, shoes and eye wear can also be found in the rotation of a "seasoned" gentleman who knows that classic pieces of clothing unlike "fashion fads" NEVER go out of style.
If this video was about "How To Get Rescued Off Of A Deserted Island", you'd still be there Gilligan. Being 50+ and knowing how to use or owning the latest technology, doesn't mean that "you are an old man trying to keep up." What it signifies is that you are in step with the times and what's happening in the world. Let me put it to you this way: have you ever been on a date with a woman in your age group and the ONLY thing she can talk about is 1) Her next mani/pedi 2) What hair color she's going to use next 3) How much she and her friends drank at a recent party, etc. I could continue but if you're smart enough, you know where this is going. Being up on current events, what's happening in the world and that includes modern technology, puts a man at a great advantage in social gatherings or when he dates. Yeah being you and dressing according to your taste and situation is spot on but the key to being in style and dressing for a man in your particular age group is to not LOOK like you're trying too hard to do so.
That's true - and you might be able to do that in LA in your profession - but have you tried experimenting and testing for yourself whether look more professional will help you land more profitable gigs? Test and see for yourself!
I appreciate your advice and help, Antonio. I'm 53 and I find that some stores only really cater to younger generations, here in the UK. I want to look good, but of my age. So have to usually go to the gentleman's outfitters, shops. I don't want to dress too formally, for day to day wear. Can you give any advice on the three quarter length winter coat please. What kind of Jeans can I pair with that and a pair of round toe, shoes?
High waisted pants? Gray flannel? This guy knows absolutely nothing about us older men. I'm 66 a nd still work out. Off the rack wranglers are great put that with a 100 white shirt a leather vest and a pait of exotic boots ( I use lizard and alligator) and you can go anywhere. All of us arent gray hairs. Mines stil lt brown. Be yourself. This guys a clown. Date youngervwomen. Men age like fine wine. Women age like milk.
Nice idea for a video but rather than find brands that suit you how about find clothes that suit you (I am over 50 and pay no attention to brand names but just buy the clothes that suit of whatever brand). I noticed that by saying brands this lead you into a plug. I agree go more classic. Like the hanger project by the way. If you are going to do commercials at least do them for something really good like that is.
Look at Gary V. He's not 50, but he's not young dude. He wears hoodies, jeans, knit caps and he's able to pull it off. The key is just to get/stay in shape.
ok I watched the video , now show me some models with styles , I work out look pretty fit , but I cant turn back time i'm bald and senior management style , I don't want to look like I think i'm a teenager . but I like your mention of the classics , show us how you think we should dress , first step to success find a niche in the market ( i'm it along with countless other men of a certain age )
Hi Antonio, i am 51 years old, I still like to wear hoodies with jeans and sneakers (i like to match my hoodie with my sneakers) i also like to wear collegiate letterman jackets, moto jackets, and distressed jeans. Concerning headwear, I like to wear fedoras, panamas, western hats, and baseball hats. Can i still wear my western, chuckas and chelsie boots? What you think Antonio? I enjoy your videos.
You should make some videos about this topic with several examples. I'm trying to teach my uncle how to dress properly and the man has a horrible taste. When he came to visit me, he had problems with the airline. They wanted him to travel as luggage.
There are times it is hard to find a happy medium in clothes when you reach 60, esp in the big and tall selections. I enjoy looking nice when I go out. The biggest thing is to watch your colors. The yellow you wore years ago might not look so great when your hair turns grey and your skin tone changes. My biggest pet peeve is why do all sweaters stripes horizontal instead of vertical.
A younger person recently showed me how to take a screenshot with a smartphone. I’m now doing it with my tablet as well. I appreciate people showing me how to use technology to my advantage, and what I mean is that when walking with a smartphone I should know as much about it as possible. I’m no old man: but if my phone starts making sounds and I don’t know why or what to do, but everyone else does, how embarrassing is that? Or if I’m standing at a cashier and I’ve forgotten my wallet and someone suggests, “Just use ApplePay” to make a purchase, and I have no idea what that means, 😬again, very embarrassing. If you carry a phone or tablet, learn everything about it. 👍
omg, I did not realize this is an older video. I thought is he having a stroke? You are so much better now. BTW you responded to me with answers that got me two jobs, thanks
Dont wear a ball cap or any hat most of the time, wear muted colors in good quality fabrics, no shirts without a collar, thinner belt, not always wear a tie, dont wear anything that advertises anything. Black or brown polishable shoes or boots, no white socks, no socks with sandals, solid color walking shorts if its hot out. Dont buy the most expensive iphone but no cheepie either. Wear no jewelrt except a watch, a good one but no fashion watches, nothing battery powered. Use quality wallet pref exotic natural materials, no velcro and dont fill it too full. No more than 4 keys on your key ring, you re not a janitor.
Wearing a watch shows your age, IMHO; since the introduction of mobile phones watches have become mainly redundant, both in terms of functionality and as status symbols. Having said that I am on the market for a diver's watch to time my swimming, and a blood pressure, pulse rate, monitor would be great.
I would add this: Try to avoid running shoes or sneakers if you're not jogging or at the gym. They are real fashion fails for older guys. This sort of falls into the idea of avoiding teen-age type attire.
If I go to an industry party I haven't nice black suit. The financial business is very different. They wear suits all the time. Surprising I have seen more Mid West agencies dress up more than the bigger agencies on both coasts. I forgot to mention when I shoot editorial both art directors and photo editors always dress casual during shoots.
its not age dependent im 40 and still wouldnt wear some of the clothes you suggest, it depends on how you are ageing, are you saying David Beckham at 40 cant wear ripped jeans? because the majority of the female population would disagree!
I am 56 and a commercial photographer. I wear surfer/skate wear every day with shorts and Levi 505's. I do own designer suits and shoes for events. While working I wear skate shoes. I believe it all depends on what kind of work you do and living location. I live in Los Angeles.
Properly fitted clothes such as suits. No extra material in the jackets and pants. I would also suggest tailored fit shirts if possible. People think that baggy shirts hide bulk when in fact they amplify it.
I just turned sixty and what I say to the younger guys is to get all you can while you can. The only thing good abt getting older is retirement. That's it!
I total disagree!!! I am 56 fit dress excellent and use LV a lot and drive a Infiniti coupe.. So I will answer the questions .Dress how you feel. I still have the young ladies looking and giving me compliments. I am going to start a blog!!
Antonio: You're credible on the subjects your covering, in your 60's or not. Hard in short videos to cover everything A-Z. Thumb nailing is sufficient. In depth suggestions could come from you but other than that that's what websites are for. Anyone who thinks otherwise.... Antonio is an "at ease" Marine officer. He's not active hence @ ease....my wording. Anyone who knows a Marine officer knows they ARE NOT slouches. Remember too, he's not a professional speaker, nor actor. He's improving but, as he has said needs & is, improving. P.S. Great idea the hangers. Most are garbage other than the one that comes with the suit. If they still do so. I haven't bought a suit since the late '70's. Blue Collar life! 👍👍👍👍👍
I like your videos, Antonio, and you give a lot of good advice. You should mention, however, the most important style point is what is in your head, not what is on it. If you think like an old man, you will look like an old man.
Excellent video Antonio! I am 64 and I agree with your points. I wear a nice suit without a tie and classic looking sport coats, which dress slacks and dress shoes to work. I have received complements from the young men in the office on my style of dress. I try to be a role model and example of dressing my age. At church, I wear a suit and tie or classic herringbone sport coat. Younger men come to me complementing me on my dress, which is same style my father wore. You are right it's important to dress your age. Older men will be more credible and young men and women will gravitate toward them. It's really sad to see men my age wear the young man look. It makes them look ridiculous. Keep up the good work on your videos. Men, especially older men are afraid to dress up like an older gentlemen. When I was a boy, I dressed as a boy, when I was a teenager, I dressed as teenager, when I was a young man, I dressed as a young man. Now I am older and I dress as older man. I sometimes get the stare and response who am I trying to impress. I say me and my father. I dress to honor my father who dressed well and thaugt me how to dress. He has long passed. He was of that generation of men who dressed well, even with little means.
This was simply too vague. If the topic is too large for one video, then make it a series and deal with different parts of the body or different social situations.
I'd prefer that... From my point of view, numbers are absolutely unnecessary. For example: I'm a younger man, but I'm in love with the geezer style. So in this video I tried to find out what I can change. I compared the things I already do with the things you suggested. And obviously I do many of those things you suggest, except for using the latest iPhone/Android. So... That's the thing that stuck. The important information. The number is completely irrelevant to me...
No problem. Antonio also has a group on linkedin called real men real style and it's full of people who are both personable and knowledgeable about the art of dressing well. For a suit jacket the shoulders should end right around your natural shoulders. You should not be able to get more than a fist between your belly and the jacket button when it's closed. Dress pants should be worn at the natural waist just below the belly button. There are also great books by Alan Flusser.
The creative world is a whole different ball game. Even at all the major ad agencies in both Los Angeles and New York both writers and art directors never wear suits and Levi's are worn a lot. They might dress a bit nicer for a client meeting but they wear what I wear and they would expect me to wear jeans during a shoot same holds for all film crews. All cameramen and women wears jeans along with the directors and writers. Only account executives wear suits. Producers wear jeans too.
I have found a brand of short sleeve casual shirts that I really love. They are called Vintage Silk Circa 1969. Very reasonably priced at Stein mart, a discount store for more fashionable clothing.
Anecdote: I was a senior Sergeant when I was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division- presumably to get the old guy off the street. I arrived at the squad wearing a grey pinstripe suit, blazing red tie, starched white shirt, black cowboy boots with pronounced-tuck heel, a grey London-Fog trenchcoat and a grey felt fedora. For weeks the squad fielded calls asking who the detective in the trenchcoat and fedora was. I'll admit it boosted my morale a bit....................................
I have been looking at you article on men's winter jackets but I cannot find anything about summer jackets. I am looking for a Safari jacket and similar lightweight light colored trousers to wear with it. However based as I am in Thailand and despite having tailors about every 10 yards here in Bangkok cannot find one that will make a Safari jacket. I will be in Europe during August and wanted something lightweight and very casual to walk around in but also lots of pockets. Not sure why a Safari jacket should be so difficult to tailor.
Thanks for this video, @ 56 it's nice to see, especially on your channel. Being retired Canadian military I get it.we are issued a sewing kit called a "housewife"...lol Thanks again.
With the physical ageing changes after 40ish, generally speaking unless very fit for one's age, expect to have a slightly jutted head/neck, with eventually some loss of neck length; shoulders that are stiff(er); less powerful limbs, so not show off with T-shirts, muscle shirts or singlets (vests), or with short shorts (short trousers/pants); flabby chest and belly, so not tight top clothes; weaker back muscles, so again not too tight; wider waist, so wear higher waisted trousers (pants) that also have front pleats and either a belt or neatly self-supporting; outer tops and jackets that are no shorter than the 'buttock curve'; footwear being of a reasonably high heel (or with a modest lift/elevator) to counter the gradual shortening in overall height and even old men bandy legs; and leave sandals for indoors at home or just at the pool or beach. That's my advice!
I live in a rural town in Merredin WA and everyone wears their work clothes...to town on the weekend. When I dress in chinos and a button down shirt with nice boot's, I am constantly asked "Why are you dressed up ?" I reply by asking if they are working today. The answer is usually No. Point made. Show some pride in the way you look.
