In this wild camping adventure, I head up to Grindslow Knoll in the Peak District via a scramble up Grindsbrook Clough. The temperatures were below freezing throughout the night with a bitter wind chill resulting in a frozen tent. The scramble along Grindsbrook Clough is always a brilliant experience. The views were excellent until I reached the summit when the mist descended along with lower temperatures. I tested out my winter wild camping gear and the Big Agnes Rapid SL performed well with its R-value of 4.8 along with the OEX Leviathan 900.

Thanks MrD. It was a cold one. Seemed a lot colder than the Derwent Edge camp in the snow at the beginning of December. Hope you’re well. 👍🏻

I popped out to take a pic of the tent late on and it was freezing. Like proper cold. I remember thinking with that wind chill you prob wouldn’t be able to last very long in those conditions. It was amazing how warm it was getting back in the tent. A bit of fabric and it can make such a difference.

Eh up Hengist, how’s thee? Yeah it was good in the morning and that realisation that the mist had cleared was great. Just an inversion missing. Hehe! Still, you can’t have everything eh. Hope you’re well! Bring on the longer days.

Was nice to see what kit you use too and I could tell you were absolutely in your element by the smile on your face 😊 Keep them coming buddy. Also you got this video out fast haha! Ah nice one. Hope you had a great time! Bet there were some great views. The Knoll I was on is 601. Just looked and the Pike is 675 so a good vantage point I’m sure. Nice video. Wifey and I were up on the great ridge Ethel bagging on Monday morning and it was blowing a doozy. 40mph gusts with a windchill to -4c it not a cloud in the sky. Busy as hell up on Mam Tor as well! Glad you had a decent camp, this weekend is looking pants unfortunately 😢

I really need to try edale side. Looked like a good hike in. The size difference with the banshee 300 is a lot compared to the 200. I looked in one at go outdoors and definitely the best of the 2. I'm tempted to get the big Agnes pad. Going to see the longevity first before buying I reckon
@HikingForHealth1
@HikingForHealth1 6 месяцев назад
The Edale side is great with lots of views and areas for camping. I had the 200 first but returned it for the 300 as I wanted that bit of extra space for not much extra weight. The Big Agnes was great. Read lots of reviews and watched YT reviews before buying and people overwhelmingly were saying how great it was. Fingers crossed it is as good as they say. I got the wide and long and was perfect in size. Thanks for watching! Cheers

Absolutely beautiful camp Gav. Sorry to hear about your covid, theres been quite a bit of it about around here. Ive had a nasty cough for about four weeks now, cant seem to shake it and its leaving me shattered. It cant last much longer, and I cant wait to get back out!
@HikingForHealth1
@HikingForHealth1 6 месяцев назад
Ahh hopefully that cough will get on its way so you can enjoy feeling well again and out there in the outdoors. I really enjoyed the camp. Was v cold though. Seemed colder than my snow camp early December. Amazing how well the tent protects you and keeps you warm once you’re out of the wind. Thanks for watching Phil. All the best!

@@HikingForHealth1 cool. I bet you were glad to get in it and zip it up fully to keep warm
@HikingForHealth1
@HikingForHealth1 6 месяцев назад
@craig1015 Too right. It has a shoulder baffle so you can tighten it up to keep the warmth in. Frustrating when you have to get out of it at 3am to pay nature a call. The bag leaks a lot of feathers though. Hoping that doesn’t have an effect on the insulation after a while.
@craig1015
@craig1015 6 месяцев назад
@@HikingForHealth1 that is so annoying when your cosy in a warm sleeping bag and you need to answer the call of nature. Hoping the zip doesnt get trapped as well

Nice video mate👍couple of questions, how did you find the Oex 900 sleeping bag and how long did it take you to get up there roughly? Maps are telling me about 60-75 min. Cheers
@HikingForHealth1
@HikingForHealth1 6 месяцев назад
The Leviathan 900 is a great sleeping bag. Used it twice now in -4 and -2 and it’s kept me warm both times. It seems to lose feathers tho quite easily so I’m going to have to keep an eye on that. You’ve got the timings about right for Grindsbrook. All depends what speed you take it at. That would be if you were keeping quite a pace I’d say. Thanks for watching. Atb 👍🏻

It’s all good so far. It’s been on one test run and was warm, comfortable and felt good quality. Hoping it lasts. So many positive reviews also from people who have had them a while on Yt.

What do u think of the leviathan 900 Gav ? I have had mine about 3 weeks & think it’s really warm in below freezing temperatures
@HikingForHealth1
@HikingForHealth1 6 месяцев назад
Yeah it’s great and combined with the Big Agnes Rapide Sl really warm. Wish it had a little bit more shoulder room but a cracking sleeping bag. Do you get a lot of feathers in your tent? Lol

Another question I have is I noticed u keep inner tent attached to outer when u pack away what do u do about the condensation on the inner fly sheet as this comes into contact with inner tent do this cause mould issues or do u air inner & outer when u get home ?
@HikingForHealth1
@HikingForHealth1 6 месяцев назад
I always air everything out when I get back home. If it’s warm it goes straight out in the garden. Winter I’ll usually pop it up in the house somewhere. But the Bobcat and the Banshee have never really had issues with condensation. 👍🏻

@@HikingForHealth1 Thanks for this information really appreciate all the advice as I have just how shall I say “resumed” camping at the age of 58 now leaning about all the new lightweight equipment we can carry on our backs for wild camping where as back in the day equipment was so cumbersome & heavy. Never to old to learn so I enjoy & like to watch you tubers such as yourself to pick tip so thanks for sharing your experiences 👍

Good man for pronouncing "grinds"brook as in rinds (of bacon). It makes my blood boil hearing people saying grinds ( rhyming with with winds). Also lose hill (rhyming with booze, as it should be, quoted as lose rhyming with close) really gets my goat....there was a battle a long time ago, the winners camped on win hill, the losers on lose hill as they became known after....not rocket science is it? And so many so-called P.D authorities on here get it wrong. All the gear and no idea if you ask me.

It’s just what I’ve always called it but I was unsure if I’m being honest. It was a great camp despite being so cold. Thanks for watching and all the best. 👍🏻
