Shiv may not love Tom that much, but she fully trusted Tom. She did not tell anyone but Tom her plan. Guess that is why his betrayal is so significant.
Well I mean at this point she is lying to him already haha. For Shiv this is about as close to the truth as she can get with someone because she is a wreck emotionally so I mean taking that into consideration I guess she does kind of sort of trust him
1: Love the way this is edited. They hang on reaction shots and don't cut away. 2: The most important part of acting is listening. And MacFadyen is the best listener.
For those of you here after 4x07, this scene certainly cements that Tom loves Shiv. Even if he can't help his opportunistic impulses, he gulps them down to be a supportive husband to her. The line "it's okay to say that you want it, I'd support you" is uncommonly touching for this show.
I’m not sure if I totally agree, although I think this interpretation is more than fair. For me I feel like Tom’s immediate reaction is more telling that he only sees his relation to Shiv as a relation to power. If anything him saying he supports her is just as much of a play as Shiv saying she doesn’t want it (when she actually does). But again, I totally see the desire to want to believe they might actually love each other. I think the characters want to believe they’re doing this for more than themselves, that’s what makes it feel good to them. But still it’s never clear…I think that’s what makes this show so brilliant, the uneasiness of it all. Does Tom support her? Does Shiv want it? Are either of them thinking of the other instead of themselves? It’s amazing how much torture we choose to go through just to thrive in capitalism.
Have you read the scripts for this scene? If you think Tom was supportive then i don't know what to say, she even tries to protect herself emotionally and because she's offered the top job he didn't want to make out with her.
@@chiomawoherem4625 think the two possibilities can be true: that he can love her and still is massive disappointed that he didn't get the job. This whole black and white with Tom and Shiv doesn't apply bc they both are driven and ambitious which doesn't coincide with love since love is supposed to be selfless. They are trying to balance what they want and want to achieve while not compromising the relationship that they are in. People like them want both and that's where it gets tricky.
This is the bit where I kind of like Tom despite myself - he is jealous and self-serving and instantly turns it around to himself but the first thing he does is congratulate her and say it’s incredible and even though it’s all a blow to his ego and she knows that he’s still the only person who tells her it’s okay to want it, literally no one else Shiv knows would give her any of that support
@@jarmonjohnson well off course he was hurt but he played his role and supported her "play" when he could clearly see her lying about it, that she doesn't want it. Her words were empty too.
Also, when they have dinner with the Pierce family, there's a shot of Logan on the left side and also Tom on the right side which is a foreshadowing of current and future CEO

@@valeskamejia6523 lmao he's the breadwinner? What show are you watching? Tom wouldn't be where he is without his relationship to Shiv. That's why he's so desperate and clingy.
This is just another example of all shiv pulling the rug out from underneath all their so called plans and Tom gets the shaft. He thought they were a team--they are not--he is nothing but a pawn to her.
