“I would just ask that you take care of me,” is one of the saddest lines in TV. He’s so broken that he can’t even ask his sister to help him through an emotional crisis without it sounding like a contract negotiation.
Honestly my favorite moments in the whole show are when the siblings show genuine love for each other. Like this and the season 3 finale are such powerful moments.
I think this scene hits so hard and is punctuated by the fact that the first moment at the end of this season when Shiv should have protected him she didn't. The one thing he begged her to do at such a vulnerable moment 😔
One of the most beautiful scenes in the whole series. Kendall has to keep this “tough guy masculine” persona at all times to please his dad. This was his one vulnerable moment where he just wants to open and be vulnerable. Beautifully done.
That sudden shift of emotions on Shiv's face is incredible. This scene was an acting masterclass. Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook (along with just about everyone on this show) are too good for words!
I think the saddest part is Kendall wants to tell Shiv, but he knows that he can’t trust her with information that could be used to blackmail him in the future.
That's the saddest aspect of the Roy family. The only people in the world who understand them are each other - but they have been destined to go down a path of always playing a conniving game of power, thus relegating them to never trust each other
I always thought it was him being worried that Shiv would call Logan out about using that against Kendall, which would make Logan pissed at Kendall and kick him to the curb
2:55 when she puts her hand on his shoulder like a co-worker, and he takes it and puts it on his heart…… I died. Shit got real and he literally thanked her from the bottom of his heart and she felt it, and it was 100% foreign. Her reaction to that was candid, and she had ZERO idea what to do there.
Because it wasn't a transactional admittance. It was just him needing someone to open up to if only for a minute, no second meaning, no ulterior motive. That genuine moment of vulnerability is what fucked her up.
Anyone else catch the importance of the end of the scene? Earlier in the episode when Logan was in the panic room, he was worried about Kendall more than his other children when he heard there was an incident and someone killed themselves. During this time, Kendall was on the balcony climbing up to the railing and peaking over the edge. At the end of the episode there is a 10' high glass barrier installed at the same railing. Clearly Logan found out where Kendall was, likely saw video surveillance footage form the balcony, and installed the barriers shortly after. Kendall leans against the glass at the end of the scene defeated and trapped, like someone had found out and ruined his escape plan.
Yeah, brilliant breakdown. I'd just like to add that the barriers were more likely installed since ATN employees had started shooting themselves due to the work culture.
@@cultofgaurav While it’s reasonable to assume the glasses went up after the guy shooting himself but I believe there is a reason there is a CCTV camera shot of Kendall going to the roof right at the beginning of the episode, it shows he’s being watched (by Logan likely) and like Krisitan said above notice how concerned Logan was about where Kendall was in the panic room? He definitely thought that could have been Kendall involved in the incident. Just goes to show Logan never has his eye off him.
Fucking amazing observation. Already one of my favourite episodes and that detail makes it even better. The CCTV camera shot at the start has more significance now aswell.
Although I definitely think practically this same thing, after a rewatch I wondered if Ken really wanted to kill himself because the glass barrier isn't that tall as to not be able to climb it up
Logan did a number on all of his kids. Instead of thinking that her father has something on Kendall, Shiv thinks Kendall has something on Logan. Logan manipulated his kids into not trusting each other so that he could always have the upper hand.
I actually think its a little more than that...Mixed with why Logan got all the kids in the divorce..Their whole lives have been just a testing field battleground...All of them being groomed in a dog eat dog way to see whos worthy in Logans eyes of being his successor...He raises them to always be in backstab mode...always be fake and deceptive...Killers...he changes his mind constantly about whos hes considering...then pulls back because one of them makes a mistake...He corrupted all of his children so the strongest one could lead the next generation..and when Ken does what he does in S2 finale...thats why u see the angry smile breakout on his face...He knows Ken is the one...but also knows that he has to put everything into destroying him now...Final test from master to would be apprentice..This is potentially the best TV series ever written..if it jeeps the moment going
" If dad didn't need me right now I wouldn't know what i would be for "- that's a new low imagine what state of mind he must be in to hv said that damn kendeall
sengie enter a name that's it when you have an abusive parent and have a childhood with no love and no one to lean on emotionally! You become like Ken. He is the perfect example of the bad side of broken but wealthy families
He straight up has nothing to live for in that moment. No identity of his own and just hanging around his father. So when he's useless to him, he wouldn't have anything to keep his mind busy. He knows he will get suicidal.
They both do. Like damn, is just such satisfying performances. This whole series is just top in performances for most of their characters, just incredible imo.
When they're hugging I love how the camera shows the way Shiv's face changes after realizing Kendall is really crying. It's such a protective Sister moment...
The staggering irony of this scene is that Kendall refuses to tell Shiv why he won't be the successor because he's worried she'll use it as leverage. And eventually she does, to prevent him from becoming the successor.
Contrasting this scene of Shiv asking if Kendall wants to talk some more with the one where Kendall is trying to open up with his mother and she is incapable of being there emotionally for him yet she always tries to guilt trip her kids for not caring about her when she literally hasn’t been there for them is just...
@@betaririzqikaer2451 imagine growing up with two such horrible parents. It's really no surprise that they cannot form proper relationships, and be a family. A bit like Voldermort and his inablity to love.
@@zurzakne-etra7069 I mean their mum went through some trauma as well. After the divorce all 3 of her children went to their father for his money and betrayed her and not only that they didn't even meet her regularly. So just like everyone in this family she is extremely traumatised too
@@aviralsatija6395 The way their Mum's scenes are written in my experience points to a narcissistic mother, and with their father they got a raw deal altogether. As it has been said numerous times, SUCCESSION is quite Shakespearean.
@@tus2521 I wonder what's his play in all of this? Seems like his presidential campaign was building up to something big but now that's scrapped... so is Willa going to get big in S03? 🤔
Currently watching this show. It's crazy that no character has acknowledged Kendall's depression so far this season. It's also crazy that that is how life is. How many of us have silently gone through hell, and the world around you just kept on going like nothing happened.
This scene made me cry. Even a venomous family is still family. Her embrace to make him cry. Crushing. And I think the glass was put up in response to the guy shooting him self. Probably took counter measures against more suicides.
I think the glass was a direct response to Kendall climbing up on the ledge earlier in the episode. That's also why when they heard somebody killed them self, Logan was so worried about where Kendall was. Logan has his eye on Kendall.
Kendall was probably planning on jumping and couldn't because of that glass. Logan's first reaction was to ask if Kendall was ok. Everyone knows Kendall was hanging on by a thread at that point.
The writing for Jeremy Strong's Kendall this season was in a totally different plane and Jeremy was pitch perfect in the execution from the biggest emotions down to the tiniest nuances. That Emmy was soooooo well deserved and this was one of the reasons why.
I don't think so. His so called olanned only came later. See this episode for itself. See the title ('safe room'), on the rooftop scene (change in the last after the suicide.
Whilst the OP did a commendable job[ that's why so many "upvotes", I see], unfortunately I've to be "that guy" and spell it out: Alas, the respondent commenters couldn't just have impulse-control and BEHAVE...! These spoilsters: Never gonna repair themselves, are they?°
Damola Yusuf no man, i think Kendall would have taken the fall. I think Logan knew it was over, the board of directors wanted him to step down. The changing
How it takes Kendall weeping on her shoulder for Shiv to stop playing the game and realise her own brother is in so much pain alone shows how much wealth and power has corrupted her
This is absolutely true but what makes it even more affecting is that the three younger siblings are possibly the only people in the world capable of eliciting that response from each other. The only reason they're "corrupted" that way to begin with is the way they were raised (and abused, mainly psychologically but in various ways by Logan), and only each other can understand the unique pain of that and what it does to a person. They live the game all the time 24/7 but only ever stop when one of them actually shows how much they're hurting or how much trouble they're in (same as Roman picking up Kendall in New Mexico).
What really burns me is when Kendall tried to ask for help from his own mother and she blew him off. He plays haunted better than anyone I've ever seen.
I think Ken saying “It ain’t gonna be me” is so ominous. it’s like he knows his secret will be revealed eventually no matter how hard they try to cover it up. he’s resigned himself to that hopelessness
Yeah, I really wanted him to become ceo but I don't see a path forward for it anymore. I think its interesting what the writers are doing by leading it more towards all the siblings owning the company rather than just Kendall but I just wish it was him.
This scene and him going up to the roof to find the plexiglass had been installed to stop a jump broke my heart. It was so hard watching him being totally broken this season. Glad he got his mojo back. I adore him. The rest are sadistic; Ken isn’t.
@@sweetcell8767 No he looks around and is clearly surprised by it. Definitely Logan. Also I don't think all of them are sadistic, Connor definitely has a heart.
I have now seen all seasons all episodes twice but I cannot have enough of this scene. The 2nd time he says "yeah it ain't gonna be me" with tears and smile is the finest piece of acting I have ever seen. I cry every time. Every effing time.
Unbelievably well-done moment. Shiv is panicking for a lot of this episode, viewing Ken as this threat to her newfound position as Logan's successor. Ken exposing just how broken he is for one of their most genuine, sincerely vulnerable moments in the entire series, simultaneously completely disarming Shiv and getting her to view him as her brother instead of her competitor... it's brilliant.
you can pinpoint the exact moment shiv turns off battle mode when she realizes kendall is crying. beautiful performances from both actors. (and I have such a crush on kendall/jeremy. god.)
@@El-jefe-darkness In response to your additional, non-solicited response: By “last episode”, you meant the latest episode i.e. exactly the one this clip is extracted from? 🤔
I keep coming back to this scene so many months later and it’s because it’s soo soo raw, emotional, real, vivid, hurtful, crazy - I don’t have the words to describe the intensity of emotions and the lack of them in this scene. It’s everything and nothing - I love it so damn much.
You know he wants to say what he did wrong but he knows he can't tell Shiv what's up because she'll just back stab him like everyone else has on this show like Roman has countless times, his father, Gerri, Stewy etc
I dunno, I think if he had of been honest with Shiv in this moment her natural instincts as a sister would've been to protect her brother. To keep his secret for the time being, but, ultimately help him some way. Maybe. I only say that because of the look of genuine concern in her face when he started to cry
Agreed - so many outstanding moments but their acting here is achingly real and vulnerable. Master class in how you have us feel the intimacy of these siblings.
This very well might be my favorite moment of the entire series, looking back now. It was such a raw and genuine moment between these two that we basically never get again. Just a glimpse of the facades falling down while they get to be two siblings for a brief second....
I think Kendall formed a strong shell of himself to get over his addiction originally and used work and business to build himself up, then when the takeovers failed and he lost, he realized none of it actually matters and how empty he is inside. Ex wife doesn’t care about him, family struggles to sympathize with him because of the strong shell he put up his whole life. He’s the most intricate character in the show imo
It is a statement of talent to make such an impact on the scene that Sarah did with that look when she hugs Jeremy all while he's crushing it with crying and raw emotions. Geniuses in their own rights.
In the end, Shiv never did end up taking care of Ken. She chose Tom instead. It’s also what cost her a chance at the top job, in Logan’s mind. Despite their differences, Logan and Ewan are immensely loyal to each other. Ken, Shiv, and Rom are not.
Actually, Shiv doesn't care about anybody. She was nearly first one who support that Tom should be victim. Also, the only reason she asked Logan not to choose Tom was because he felt bad that Tom was right in what he said about their marriage. but again she didn't think about who was going to be victim after Tom. And i think she wasn't upset for Kendall. Poor Ken..
She didn't choose Tom, she for the first time realized how much of a shitty person she was towards him and was so guilt ridden which made her help Tom. Even then she made that choice after being convinced she would be on Logan's good side.
@@alsage9992 you’re being waaay too kind on her. The only reason she protected Tom, is because she didn’t want to face a world where even Tom would leave her, and wash his hands with her. She chose him precisely because she could have him eat out of the palm of her hand at any moment. For this reason, she chose to be with an opportunistic, unprincipled, cowardly, babbling-baboon semblance of a man. And to have this insult to manhood and masculinity reject her, would be too much for her to face. So to avoid dealing with her own demons, she’s okay to sacrifice someone else, anyone else. She is only motivated by herself here. She, to me, is the most despicable character out of the 3 siblings. The most selfish, and definitely “feminism gone rogue” because of what must have been a shitty childhood.
Sarah Snook is amazing in this scene. The change of expression on her face when she realises somethings wrong with Kendall broke me the first time I watched it.
This is probably my favorite scene in the show. Prior to this moment we were only guessing the extent of Kendall's internal struggle after the accident/cover up and in a single instance we're able to see how broken he is and how badly he needs support.
OMG, some of the best acting I've seen! This was my favoite scene of the season. Along with the final scene of the season finale. Jeremy Strong is AMAZING! They all are!
Watching this with where things are going in season 3 is just so fucking sad. Without their father’s influence, they could be good siblings to each other. We get a glimpse of the care and understanding the siblings have for each other behind it all here, but it can never be reality in any consistent way. Logan will always tear them apart, and they’ll let it happen willingly because it’s the only thing that makes them happy
supposedly Logan had someone tailing Kendall and monitoring him for a while, including following him up to the roof the first time-presumably they assumed he was thinking about jumping off
It was put there for safety reasons because that person committed suicide during the episode.I do not think it was put in place for Kendal specifically
Who's here after Shiv shivved Kendall in the eye after releasing that press release about his addiction in S03E03? This show captures sibling rivalries amazingly
This scene makes me so sad. It gives a glimpse of what the Roy siblings could have been like had they not been so damaged by two cruel, indifferent, manipulative parents.
It's argued that she did take care of him so he won't suffer the stress of what the dad went thru. The dad was tough but Kendall was sensitive and it shows when he hugs his sister and cries
I know I'm probably boar on the floor for this, but until I rewatched this scene, I didn't understand why Ken was so devastated by Shiv's letter in s3e3 until I rewatched this. The siblings are all so nasty to each other it didn't register to me why that was so devastating, until I realized shiv was the one Ken asked to take care of him once his dad had no more use for him. He must have felt so alone.
And he doesn't know that she's part of the reason their father chose to sacrifice him at the end of season 2 It came down to Ken or Tom and Shiv chose the husband that she didn't even love and who actually did share some guilt over her brother. I have hated Shiv since then and have never recovered from that
The writing, the acting, the tempo... even the way they move about the space is so f***ing good!! I’m having difficulty finding the words to accurately describe just how good this is. It is so multi layered... I’m speechless.
The last minute is another one of the MANY times I thought "okay, this show is a masterpiece", but it's the most vivid one to date. Britell's music is phenomenal.
