It does.. however they in most places they won’t because the “politricks” leave no room for actual education. Parents are going to have to step up their own education and guide their youth. If not the youth is doomed to be someone’s meal ticket.
@@1LineAtATime good luck with that. the majority of parents 10 or 20 years ago were abusive and neglectful. I know my much-more-than-a-handful of friends that I've had and then not had with shitty parents isn't a great sample size, but how is it that at least 40% of people in my generation, including me, is queer and trying our best to cope with trauma and our overall situation?
@@aDSdl_l No. the minimum daily required amount is Zer0 Your body can make all the glucose it needs. And 'normal amounts' is NOT what we are told in the nutritional guidelines (plate) It needs to be intermittent at most, to be metabolically healthy.
I used to drink soda like water as a kid, but I haven't had a soda since 2006. Nowadays I sort of have an allocated amount of sugar I eat daily (I am very much a creature of habit in what I eat, so it's easy to keep up with) and I do try to not go over 50 grams of added sugar. I'm not a fat person, but my eating habits aren't that great. I constantly get told I don't have to watch my sugars as hard as I do and this video makes me feel that all my sugar watching is justified.
Your content is well-made and you provide a fun and engaging energy, but I really have to thank you for being such a trustworthy and transparent source on health. I appreciate how you help clarify what's really going on, note where there's uncertainty or mistakes, and aren't afraid of discussing controversial or complicated topics.
It isn't well made, its misinforming and fearmongering, sugar isn't bad, its bad in excess because it creates adipose tissue (fat) which in excess can lead to health problems. The whole time he says sugar in excess.
@@kadenhill508completely incorrect, actually. Sugar is bad. This whole “all things in moderation” has always been a midwit belief. Sugar can be tolerated by the body, but we are not supposed to eat refined sugar at all.
The worst thing that ever happened to the American diet was the sugar industry successfully buying enough lobbyists and "research" to make fat Public Enemy #1 and get the attention off of sugar. Sugar is in _everything_ now, and it is destructive in many more ways than just this. It screws with your energy, your digestion of other things, your hormones and brain chemistry, just about everything. Having gotten into the carnivore diet over the past year really made me realize how dramatic the impact is when I take a day or two off to eat out with the family and immediately get flu-like symptoms for a couple days thereafter. Sugar is the dietary devil.
Do you include Raw natural honey or Dark Brown Maple Syrup into your diet in moderation? What are your reactions to such natural sugars? Are you still on carnivore now or have you included fruit or vegetables into your diet?
I wouldn't say I've ever had a problem with alcohol or tobacco. I don't drink or smoke, but I sure had a problem with sugar. My parents did a really good job at keeping me mostly away from it. So I went and looked for it whenever I had the chance. I would say I on average consumed maybe the same amount or maybe slightly less than a normal kid in my country. My big issue was soda, since that's the one source of sugar my parents never bothered controlling. I was the kid who would buy a 2L and drink it. I drank it whenever I could, until at 17 I decided to stop after watching a video with some animated bears saying sodas are bad, that and the fact my family laughed when I told them. So out of concern for my health and a little spite I simply stopped drinking all sodas, eventually sweet drinks, then juices and now I only drink water and occasionally tea, and it's been that way for over 10 years. But my desire for sugar hasn't gone with age, if I allowed myself I would eat candy whenever I could. I love lollipops, hard candy and chocolate. But I do my best to either reduce my intake or avoid it in nearly every other food that is not the actual sweet stuff I am eating. Nowadays most of the sugar i eat comes with the occasional cookie, or small chocolate piece. I make sure nearly all of my food doesn't have added sugars. It was a pain to find some protein bars with no added sugars, but I was able to find some that used dates. My grandma died of Diabetes, my aunt has it and my mom is always battling to not get it. I am trying to be better.
going carnivore will alleviate that sugar craving - carbs also break down into glucose. The body burns glucose first and without it, your body will switch to ketones and running off of fat. look into the carnivore diet!
sugar isn't bad lmao. its just a form of fuel, sugar doesn't mean sweet its a form of carbohydrate. Fiber is a sugar and its not associated with sweet.
@@kadenhill508 SUGAR ISN'T BAD? tell that to the diabetics lol wtf you talking about? FAT IS FUEL. Not carbs, we burn carbs first because our body wants to run off fat.
i still dislike the parroted phrase "prefers glucose" as, just because the human body is burning it first doesn't mean that it exactly wants it. from my perspective, it seems more like the body is just trying to get rid of the sugar first as it's the most volatile of the 3 macro nutrients. although our blood cells need glucose due to their lack of mitochondria, too much sugar in the blood is dangerous. the human body can also make glucose from other nutrients making it dietarily non-essential. it just seems strange to say the body "prefers glucose" when there's not much in our bodies that actually need it and any amount we do need doesn't need to be eaten and can just be provided by our bodies
You are mixed up my friend. The body runs on glucose, it’s not a phrase, it’s a fact. The point I think you are trying to make is how the body “prefers” to get glucose and because sugar turns into glucose literally the second it hits your tongue means the body “prefers” sugar because it had to do just about zero work to get glucose. The body is an extremely efficient machine so of course there are built in mechanisms in the body that make you crave sugar so the body can get energy with minimal effort. The next preferred method for the body to create glucose is through carbs, the next after that is fat and lastly protein in that order. The body will turn all of these into glucose but only if it’s not getting it’s “preferred” resources in the order I mentioned above.
@@SalFerrer at the same time, the body doesn't need to consume glucose to run, and even then, it only needs very little. this is what i mean with how people will look at this in different ways to draw their own conclusions. glucose is necessary for the simple cells that can't process other fuels, but that doesn't mean that's what the body "prefers" to burn. it just needs to use it all up because glucose is absorbed quicker than protein and fat. glycogen storage is also limited, meaning it either has to burn it immediately or convert it into something else if glycogen is already full. this also plays into the part of the video talking about fiber and other methods meant to slow down the simpler carbohydrates so they don't overwhelm our bodies. yes, our bodies want energy, but that doesn't mean they need all that energy as food is plentiful and we don't need to worry about storing it as fat as much.
Idk, I used to be keto, while trying to weight train. I hated it. Now I’m like okay 100-150 grams of glucose/sugar I’m a lot happier and leaner. I think it depends on your activity levels and such
You should talk about the Randle Cycle. I really do think it's one of the main explanations for obesity and autoimmune disorders in the developed world. And it's rarely ever talked about.
Love this channel. Keep doing amazing work. I share a lot of your videos with friends. A lot of this information I learned in college, but not before it was too late to have developed Type II. More doctors need to be sending this content to their patients. Shit, you should probably be partnering with the FDA and HHS to educate entire communities on why we need to be eating "food made out of food".
Johnny, love how you entertain, and educate us about the science of nutrition. Keep up the excellent work. I’ve referred a number of people your age to your channel. I’m an OG, but still willing to learn no matter who’s teaching so long as it’s factual and backed up with science. Cheers.
As someone who is capable of reading scientific articles and understanding statistics, I love your content for being such a nice combination of entertainment value/storytelling, down to earth energy and proper literature study! Bringing science to the 'masses' so to speak is enormously important work. You are helping educate people and making them literate in how to understand and interpret scientific research which is soooo important since journalist will often report on them in such a way that people get confused and lose trust in science as a method. You are doing some very important work here, I hope you know that.
Fun fact: Ireland ruled that Subway's bread has so much added sugar that it no longer qualifies as "bread" and is instead "pastry" so... actually some bread practically is as sweet as candy.
Im a one serving gal!!! But….ive been struggling with an ED since I was a child sooooooo sometimes less than one serving but IVE BEEN SO GOOD at least eating 1!!! Serving!!!
This channel is essential viewing for all. You're no doubt making great contributions by educating the masses on how to prevent the multiple diseases which are on the rise as a consequence of terrible diets and diabetes
This channel has been an excellent resource for understanding how different foods affect our bodily processes. If it hasn’t happened it’s almost guaranteed that teachers are going to use these videos in the classroom, as they should.
no they aren't because this video is not helpful in anyway to understanding general nutrition, it makes multiple mistakes when talking about general nutrition.
Excellent presentation! I can just see all those sugar-pushers (Oreos, Tootsie rolls, Twinkies, etc) clutching their pearls as you break this down so beautifully & simply for us addicts. I could never understand why my cholesterol was so high when I rarely ate any fat. Now I know!
@@the1plantguy I was pre-diabetic with a lot of health problems. All the issues disappeared after 6 months of keto 5 years ago. It was too late for my father and cousin.
I’ve been doing more from scratch cooking. You’re right, after that you tend to see the sneaky ways it’s hidden out that a serving is actually pretty small.
Another great video. I never skip your educational videos. It's clear that you spend a lot of time compiling all this information that you present. Every video I've watched of yours never disappoints. Keep up the great work. You are an inspiration to many.
Since the fiber difference in fruit vs juice was mentioned, I think it could have been mentioned in bread (specially since it came shortly afterwards). I hope that's the topic of the next video.
Question: what else causes oxLDL to form? Is it only sugar? If I'm understanding everything you've taught me so far: Things that cause high inflammation/oxidation (such as sugar) will cause oxLDL to form. Which is the type of LDL that sticks to the inside of your blood vessels, creates cardiovascular disease, and potentially blood clots. Is sugar the primary culprit for this? Or are there other things that cause RAGE? What are they?
Another informative vid. Cheers! (Edit- i wrote this mid-vid. Thanks for calling out juice:) Though I rarely consume anything sweet, i have found that most juice, in particular, is sneaky-scary-sugary (juice is healthy, right?) I recently bought a Snappe apple juice, 16 ounces, before I noticed it had 47 grams of sugar!!! I took two sips and threw the rest out. 47 grams in a small bottle of APPLE JUICE- that's on a Mountain Dew level, way more than a candy bar! (I eat way too much salt instead 🤔) Anyhow, thanks for the information. I enjoy learning from this channel.
Yeah, despite juice being from fruit you basically take out all of what makes a fruit healthy in the first place. No fiber also causes the sugar to be absorbed WAY too fast. I’ve never been a big fan of juice and kicked it a while back, IF I wanna have a treat every once in a while I’d have a soda/boba/sweetened coffee instead since juice is basically just as bad lol
@@kingzach74 yeah true, I’m just saying in terms of sugar they’re both close to the same level. Again it’s only something I have once or twice a month max I’m not advocating for drinking soda in place of juice lol
Your videos are apart of our extra curriculum over here. I have to consciously not hype you up with my children so they won’t think I expect them to be as thorough as you are 😎- but you know how Mama’s roll! Thanks for keeping it interesting young one 💞!
My daughter has ADHD so it's sometimes difficult to keep her focused to learn. The small cuts where you get distracted (the table, for example) and the analogies you use are fun enough that I'm gonna have her watch a video because I think it'll keep her entertained enough to keep her interested.
Thanks for making this kind of vital information more mainstream. I know you have references, I've been learning about this stuff for years as a layperson ever since I read Gary Taubes, but have you considered posting them? When people ask me for advice on how to be healthier, and I tell them things like grass fed butter, cut out sugar and vegetable oil, eat more meat and less starches, it is so easy for them to write me off, so receipts are always welcome.
There's nothing really that inherently different between "grass fed" butter and "non grass fed" butter. There are slight differences, but nothing earth shattering(there are a lot of influencers who claim wild findings about grass fed products just to sell more products). Also it's likely that the so-called grass fed ones actually came from the same farm that had the supposedly non-grass fed butter. Often manufacturers and farms will sell the same goods with a different label on them and put 2 different prices on them without a true product distinction. There's nothing that regulates whether a product is truly "grass-fed" or not. You're taking the manufacturer at their word.
I've learned so much that is greatly helping me be more aware of my health and diet, and your videos are always fun and informational. Thank you so much and I hope you keep making great content! :D
Triglyceride plays a part in this chain reaction too, as i remember watching a doctor video on it. Unfortunately, I forget where/what that is. I think it acts as a catalyst for the cholesterol to cause issues. I remember finding it when i discovered sugar is a toxin to the liver.
So this goes out to everyone . I eat primarily Fruits , Nuts and Fish . That being said I eat a ton of fruits ( not literally) and often wonder if my sugar intake is high as well with natural fruits. I do not drink fruit juices or eat sugar outside of what I get naturally. Any opinions? Serious ones or joke ones 😂 im down for either
I've been biking my whole life and at age 60 I feel good. Find an exercise routine that you can do your entire life that is low impact. Love your channel!
These are some of the best videos. Thank you for this breakdown. Over the last 6 to 8 months I have reduced my sugar intake greatly, as well as carbs. I have done other things along the way, but weight has come off. I feel better. And most importantly, I don't crave sweets any longer.
Great video. My brother and I have been following you for a while now and while I've been liking your videos I haven't been doing my due diligence in the comment section. I'm just trying to help the algorithm push your video out to more people.
Great presentation! I would love to see one on alcohol (which is sugar), and it's effects on the body. Possibly similar to this, I get, but always good to call it out.
I think of alcohol as they enhance it there's no way you could eat that much food with that is the same as you get from alcohol you'd get too full but your bypassing that and it affects your liver too it has to be processed by that a lot at a time a good thing your liver can repair itself but there is a point of no return.
Your doing a great job waking people up to foods that government says is ok to eat. Quick qu? What is the food equivalent to lmnt your sponsors powder?
@@jpjp3873It can be. Anything that requires cuts to a major food group (unless it’s sugar…do try to cut down on sugar) can be temporarily helpful but not always sustainable for a lot of people. The communities around these different diets often become sensationalized with its proponents attributing outrageous health benefits to the lifestyle without much scientific backing and members shaming each other or outsiders. rivalry between opposing groups, such as vegans vs. carnivores.
I think it's important to mention that this is ONE pathway that atherosclerosis can occur but nothing happens in biology in isolation unless done in a lab. There are multiple different pathways that can cause atherosclerosis to develop and in almost all cases its a mix of those pathways. Thay is to say, don't think you have 0 risk of atherosclerosis just because you're not pre/diabetic. You can have normally functioning AGE/RAGE pathways and still get atherosclerosis just because your cholesterol, triglycerides and apoB are to high. More LDL total means more chance to oxidise into oxLDL even under otherwise normal conditions. Just the same as being taller means you have a higher risk of cancer simply because you have more cells, more cell devision and thus more chances for a cell to go weird.
dude the video is dumb. theres no reason to try to reason with it because he hides the underlying message to try to fearmonger sugar to get more views. We know sugar isn't bad unless in excess.
I like to sweeten with fruit or maple syrup. And with juices I've been cutting it with sparkling water to make my own "sodas". Whole foods are definitely the way to go - not the market lol.
17:45 sometimes they get around this, by adding something which is only there for the sugar, and doesn't contribute a ton on flavor, but technically contributes enough to the recipe to not have to put it as added sugar. i think that labeling is not very good, and should be separated differently, like lactose is sugar, but is much slower to be converted to glucose (or allulose for a more extreme version, since it's indigestible but is still a sugar, or raffinose which is also indigestible but is made of glucose so you could still maybe snatch some away from the gut microbes), while the dividing line between sugar and carbs is quite fuzzy and it's unclear how something will function until it's been tested.
Since you did us a solid by making this video, I'll do you a solid. It's called a "Megazord". ;) Seriously, your videos are enjoyable and informative, you do great work!
Oh man the post-candy-binge leg cramps started in my 40's. I could get them so bad my lower leg and foot would actually twist sideways and I couldn't straighten it, the pain was excruciating. Currently 1 week in on Carnivore and the best thing I've found for supplemental electrolytes is good quality club soda - not the store brands, which only have a bit of added sodium. Name brands if you read the label have the sodium, potassium, and others.
Very good content and well explained. You detail perhaps rather complicated metabolic processes in easily understandable bite-sized, non-sugar coated chunks. I see you also provide a link to your notes where there are references to papers and sources of information. Thanks for all your work. I look forward to watching your future content and also some of the older videos. Cheers.
It is easy to drink too much water, causing problems. Quite common for long distance runners and hikers. Sweating causes salt and other electrolytes to be lost, making the too much water problem worse. Dehydration is usually not a problem if there are aid stations along the route.
Is this why metformin is associated with longevity? I have read that metformin can reduce glycosylation in blood, but I couldn't find a clear explanation of how it works. Some long-term studies, looking at non-diabetic people who take at least 500mg of metformin a day, show an association between metformin and longer lifespans. Could it be because even a moderate amount of sugar in the blood reduces kidney function (GFR) over time, even if the person never develops diabetes? This might be an interesting topic for a future video.
Great video as always. You made a whole video on how we fell for the idea of butter being bad, so I'm kind of surprised you didn't touch on how we were led to believe that sugar isn't that bad, and why all those fat free products existed. (i.e. those studies paid for by the sugar industry to put the blame on fat)
Come on, we know you watched Power Rangers! 😉 Seriously, great presentation. I always share your videos with everyone and this is one of your very best. Fortis Mane!!
You do an excellent job of building up why things happen, however it usually feels like you gloss over the end result pretty quickly. If you stress the conclusion out a little longer and give as much time explaining it as you did the previous processes, it'd help round out the video and make it more digestible.
Thank you for the information and your views. IMO the absolute top for liquid sugar is carbonated beverages along with supposed energy drinks. Being a child of the 50's a soda was a treat that was allowed at most twice a month and the portion was 6 oz..
A large portion of energy drinks have been switching to Zero Sugar though. I never really drink carbonated beverages at all though. I drink plain filtered water out of a water bottle I carry with me everywhere.
@@kingzach74 I don't drink carbonated beverages either, I am greatly in the minority. As to the Zero sugar drinks, the chemicals put in those drinks are worse than the sugar.
I mean absolutely no offense here and I love this channel and appreciate all the content you make! I just wanna trauma dump here 😂. When I saw just the title of this video it made me feel so extremely shameful because I can’t stop eating sugar. I love chocolate, fruit, pastries, all sorts of things with sugar. I love fast food and restaurant food and I eat this kind of stuff regularly. I also eat home cooked meals but I don’t have the time or space (it’s complicated) to make food for every meal. I feel so extremely terrible about it but I don’t have a choice. One day it’ll get better.
A college students mem diet, instant noodles, chef boy r d, oranges and bananas, a coffee a day. Gatorade and water and a single soda a day maybe single bag chips and sandwich for lunch... Over ten years drove my a1c to be over 17. I was also doing a mile everyday 2 miles maybe 2-3 times a week. My pits still alive so this is true. Also work on cars and landscape and framer for construction. Regardless everyone's different. But humans weren't meant to eat any process protein. And compacted carbs.
Remember the of bread was hard rough chunked. All this soft centered hoochie applicable bread . So any sandwich but lettuce wrap is no good. All the saturated cold cut packaged have preservatives. Especially American cheese is loaded shmp and sodium citrate. Obviously the chips baked in oils no good. Only dry vegs and chicken only can rapidly drop the a1c mine 17 to 9 within 3-5 months. But the kidneys take a huge hit. Because carbs are necessary so it was true. It can't be cut. Because I gained double weight from just a Thanksgiving weekend no bread. A1c still good. But physical stamina shot. So never tip ur pancreas ! Because its not reversible
Wait, there's more! *vascular endothelial glycocalyx layer* Lying at the interface of blood and the vascular wall, the glycocalyx acts as the primary functional barrier for endothelial cells. Its structure is a mesh of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, and glycoproteins intertwined in a seemingly disorderly yet functional pattern. The blood sugar pummeling of multiple blood sugar spikes a day decimates the glycocalyx without a chance to recover. This allows the oxLDL, sdLDL, other toxins to sneak through the endothelium. Also it appears that insulin receptors and even insulin itself can be glycated. 😱
Another great video, thanks. Have you done anything on the different insulin reactions (if any) between eating store bought bread vs. bread made from home ground wheat berries?
I don't drink any fruit juice or soda. I mostly only drink water. Every once in awhile I will add these SOS Kids electrolyte drink packets that only have 3g of added sugar per packet. They have a little bit of Vitamin A, C, Magnesium, and Zinc. I don't consume a lot of "whole foods" though. It's too dang expensive to eat "whole foods". These days a meal prepared using "whole foods" can be just as expensive as going to a restaurant(at least when you calculate the waste that might result from having to purchase a larger amount of the ingredients than you need ).
im in a very shitty situation as far as diet goes. i *will* get my lucky break, i know i will, and ive had a taste of it last year when i actually WAS making enough money to pay for my own food, but i dont anymore. . . live with my grandmother, who pays for most of the food with her government-issued checks for various different reasons, along with a few other family members that dont contribute anything to the diet situation. she grew up during a time where everyone did physical labor and had to contribute to farms and the like, and during a time where everyone thought carbs were the most important part of a meal. i dont think she understands why i tried for a while to constantly refuse food from her and why i started buying my own food early on last year, and kept up with it for a good 6 months give or take a month. she just doesnt understand that she doesnt actually know what everyone truly needs in their body, and will try her hardest to tell me what i need in my body, which includes a shit load of carbs and sugary shit. i dont have the money rn to pay for my own food instead, and she'd just forget that i want her to buy things that are more healthy in general just so i can have a better diet. id immediately have some issues if i just refused to eat almost everything unhealthy thats in the house or thats being offered to me, because thats basically everything thats in the house..... she thinks that what she knows is whats right when SHES the one with diabetes, and i try somewhat to keep myself away from that same fate.
