Finally, eh? I know a lot of you have been wanting me to take a look at a Suhr, so here you go. Let's take a look and see if this high-end custom shop guitar is worth the insane price tag. And, find out if it compares it to it's new-on-the-scene competition, the Ibanez AZ Prestige. They both have roasted maple necks, stainless steel frets, locking tuners...what's the difference?
Pickups: SSV Neck, SSH+ Bridge Pickup
Face portion was shot with a new camera. The b-roll is still 1080p on this one, but will be 4k next week :)
Have a guitar you want me to review? Email me, address is on my channel's about page. If you have something funky and fun, I'll cover shipping.
The signal chain was AxeFX2 (Friedman BE, Double Verb) with the Horizon Devices Precision Drive pedal. Check out the pedal here: amzn.to/2w2lUd0

Love that you mentioned the inspiration aspect of guitars. You never hear that in reviews and we definitely tend to forget that when we’re looking at specs and features and price but it’s very important
@TheGuitarPit

Yeah, it's a bit delicate because it's not a knock on this guitar at all. It's just my personal preference and finding guitars that call to me. I used to love Ibanez but have kind of moved away from them recently for that exact reason.

Suhr makes a great guitar. I've owned several Suhr, a few Tom Anderson's, custom carvin and lots of USA jacksons. I was never an Ibanez fan until I tried the AZ. I have the 2402 FF-RBB and have since sold off my other guitars. The AZ is perfect. I like it better than any of the Suhr or TA guitars I've owned. It may be a timing thing, or some other thing I haven't considered, but I am an Ibanez fan all the way now.

Awesome review. I've wanted a Suhr modern since Aaron Marshall started raving about them. I can't decide between that and an Aristides 060. Thoughts?
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 лет назад
I haven't played an Aristides yet. Haven't found a deal on them at all. I've been looking though. To be 100% honest, the Arisides sound clips I've heard on RU-vid that aren't heavily mastered and modified sound a little thin. I sort of suspect they have Parker Fly syndrome, but I still want to try one. I always hear such good things about them, so I want to at least give one a shot. But all of that said, this Suhr Modern is the real deal. 100% awesome playability and tone. I know in the video I said I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it, but I changed my mind on that shortly after. I'm absolutely keeping it, and it's now the baseline by which I judge other guitars. Can't recommend one enough, especially if you can get one in the 2500ish range.

I bought my Suhr Modern Satin Pro for around 2k brand new but it did not have all the extra fancy paint jobs. It cost me same as a new Fender Elite Stratocaster but plays way better and is lighter no nonsense guitar. I did not see any reason to pay 1-2k more for fancy woods and crap that had nothing to do with playability.

@@TheGuitarPit the other good high end guitar if you find one is a Jackson USA Custom Shop Soloist! I see specials on them for under 3k brand new and used 1400 all day long on reverb. The quintessential metal guitar along with Charvel.

I bought a $4000 PRS 10 years ago that I was afraid of playing in case I dinged it. It has a couple small nicks but I'm more relaxed with it now coz I'm never selling it. Great review. That guitar sounds really good clean, like SUPER good. However, to me, on the dirty channel it just sounds sterile. It looks beautifully and artfully crafted. I just think it lacks a little character in the pickup department. Before you say, just swap out the pickups, a guitar costing upwards of $4k new shouldn't require a damn thing.
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 лет назад
Thanks DaveR. I'd agree with you. I rarely play clean but the splits on this sounded so good you probably noticed I used shots of me just flipping through the settings. The whole time I was thinking "wow ok I should probably use that more" haha. The overdrive wasn't the best. I've seen some people mention that, and prefer the Suhr Aldrich pickup in the bridge. I'm sure you can pick whatever you want when you order it :) Fit and finish is flawless, and it's truly a nice instrument. I feel pretty confident saying they are my favorite pickup ever. It depends on what you play and what you're looking for...I'd take Fluence Moderns for metal over them, for example...but I just can't get over how clear and great they sound in almost every application. Check out my Suhr Standard Antique and the Andy Wood tele video. Both of those have Thornbuckers and I think they sound incredible. Sounded very nice to me. When mine arrived it was new from factory, and I never felt uncomfortable. The presentation was divine, exquisite. They build clean guitars, and all details are cared for. Flawless. In that price range many Gibson guitars. All of the 335s, some of the collector grade LPs. Ibanez has several collector grade guitars that exceed Suhr's price bracket. My UV77 is the most expensive fiddle I own. It's expensive to operate a business in CA, and the labor rates for their specialists need to cover their cost of living. Buying a Suhr supports this entire structure. Living in TN is quite a bit more affordable. I am preferential to my 335. It needs attention, has a construction method that differs from most, semi-hollow. It has 10-52 strings tuned standard, so quite a bit of neck pull, likes to go out of tune every day with temp changes. Holding it while playing warms up the wood, and it'll flatten. But it's my baby. -♥-
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 лет назад
Yeah all fair points. Flawless is exactly the right word. I've kept it, and it remains about as good as guitars get. It's still one of my favorite guitars, although personally I have a couple that appeal to me personally a little more. Either way, I'll be keeping it since it's a great metric to compare other guitars too.

Why are these so expensive? They make mayones and skervesen seem cheap! Regardless of how good the quality is, I don't see how they could charge upwards of 4k for a bland, basic guitar. Good review though and good content.

I think it's like other luxury goods. Is a BMW 5x better than a Camry? Is a Rolls Royce 10x better than a BMW? Not really, but as you go up, it gets exponentially more expensive. The quality and attention to detail on this thing is incredible. So I get the steep price. I'm just not willing to pay it, personally.

Mayones are just average guitars and still cost a lot. I've played once one of their top guitars and was totally disappointed. Than the dealer gave me a Tom Anderson and I felt in love immediately. The TA almost played itself. The thing is, that you might not realise this if you don't have anything good to compare. For some even a cheap Squier can be the best guitar in the world because they've never had a really good instrument in their hands. And that's ok as long as they are happy with their guitar. You can still make good music on it. But don't judge until you've played many many instruments from cheap mass production to custom master pieces.

Take this Suhr for example , it may cost me over 3000 dollars(22000 CNY) in China , and 2300 for a fender american ultar tele . Getting a high end guitar in America might be a good choice i think.

Another great review. having my eyes on a Suhr for some time I can say I've watch all the utube on them and yours is by far the best! No kidding. Most will give a long demo of the sounds but not much else, whereas besides covering that area you cover the most important area...practical use! Of course i'm not too surprised you managed to find a 4k quitar for $2500 lol. it has to be an art in itself. The suhr I'd concider wouldn't be the modern...as they are just too pricey. I'd go for Classic Pro HSS for $2195 new. That though would only be because it's not that too far shy of an Elite American Strat and the better workmanship is so superior that i'd say...yeah the extra bucks are worth it. But currently I'm still leaning toward a Greg Howe GH3. You get the Duncan little '59, and 24 frets. And Kiesels are certainly close to a suhr in build quality. Not as good but damn close enough anyway. And I could speck that out new, forgoing some fancy top and paint job at about $1500. Compared to an Elite strat at the same price point? the GH3 is a no brainer. Now the GH3 doesn't have the 510 trim but the Hipshot is pretty good, and i'd likely just get the fixed bridge anyhow. I know the Suhr neck is plexed but those two carbon fiber rods in the kiesel has my faith in saying that neck still would be more stable. Looking at it from a practical perspective, yeah not having to worry about theft or dings a $1500 working guitar is far more attractive than a 4k quitar I'd be afraid to take anywhere. I think either could be inspiring but you can't tell that until you play one.

Thanks Megostryder, glad you found it helpful! I noticed the same, because I did a lot of research before buying this :) This guitar was listed at $2899 and dropped to $2599. I messaged the seller right away but he would only budge another $50. I was happy with the deal. The craftsmanship on the Suhr really delivers. I agree, a Kiesel is great, but this is 1-click better on the detail (fret finish, rounding, etc). You can't go wrong with either guitar. And there is a lot of value in a guitar that didn't cost your life savings :)

I dont wanna be that guy, but i have to. The suhr modern custom costs about 4k, the ibanez az costs about 2k. The ibanez its like a 9 out of 10 (suhr being the 10) while it costs about half of a suhr's price. Yeah, it has a lot of fancy woods and as you said, the quality its really noticeable, but i think for one does not simply takes the big brother for a fair comparison. A fair comparison should be the standard suhr modern, which costs around 2.3k.
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 лет назад
I've had 4 Suhrs and so far, every single one of them is a clear winner (in my opinion) over an AZ. There is a Modern Satin on Reverb right now for $1600, and I bet that is better than an AZ too :) I also don't really think the "quality" of the Modern Custom is "better" than a regular Modern. Sure, maybe they have some fancier appointments, but in a blind test I bet a Custom vs regular Modern would be very similar. I ended up selling this particular Suhr and I regret it. It was the best, cleanest build I've ever seen. I should have kept it :) I sold my AZ and don't miss it at all haha.

I played about a half dozen Suhr guitars a couple years ago - drove 2.5 hours from my house to this shop. Total waste of time. I really don't get it - every single one i played felt like a "Regular guitar" with "regular-good" feel. I even played a couple with scratchy pots, and the setups weren't amazing. I know this might be a dealer issue, but they were all new guitars. I also played Tom Anderson Guitars and a couple of Jackson Custom Shops... now THOSE guitars really stood out. Also, i think it's so funny that people think ibanez ripped off Suhr. The very first thing i thought when i saw the Suhr modern is "oh they just rounded off an RG a little" - whatever.

Actually, I think that every guitar above … let's say 1000€ should be as good as this Suhr. We live in a world full of machines and creating products with this precisions shouldn't be a thing. If you buy an expensive Gibson or Fender, than you pay mostly for the name but definitely not for any outstanding craftsmanship. You can make good music on them, don't get me wrong. And they have this very special vibe and they look gorgeous. But purely from a technical point of view, they are just average or sometimes even poorly made guitars.
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 лет назад
I think Kiesel basically proves your point. 99% CNC stuff, fit and finish is usually flawless. They all play great. I think with brands like Suhr, PRS, etc, you're paying for the very last finishing details, wood selection, etc. Custom hardware sometimes, that sort of thing. It's really a shame brands like Gibson cant get their fit and finish up on par with other famous brands. The LP Standard I recently reviewed was a great guitar, had a ton of "heart" or whatever, and sounded phenomenal. But if you look at the price and all the finishing errors, it's a bit of a shame.

@@straightshooter8662well that's pretty easy : - Harley Benton is Thomann's in-house brand so there's no middle man which isn't the case for Suhr - As far as I know, the Fusion guitars are made by an OEM builder in Indonesia whereas Suhr guitars are made in the USA in a relatively small factory, so you need to factor in the cost of labor + operating a manufacturing company in the US - Harley Benton has been known to cut costs in various ways including the quality of the materials (wood, hardware, pickups, finishes) they use for their instruments (I haven't played the Fusions so I can't judge that particular line) but Suhr is known for using top notch components I'd still buy an HB Fusion over a new Suhr Modern though lol
