It was 117 degrees this week, so it's officially summer here in Arizona! We figured now is the best time to share an update of our backyard! Three summers ago, we planted our first shade trees, and the transformation over those 3 years has blown our minds!
The biggest thing gardening has taught us is patience! This was not something either of us really had when we first started out, and because of that, we ended up making a lot of mistakes in the garden. Planting a baby mango tree in the summer in a completely barren backyard in Arizona will not lead to success, and we learned that the hard way - many times! But we're happy to share the mistakes we've made along the way, and to encourage you to get out in your yard and just start gardening! Being patient and creating microclimates for your sensitive trees before actually buying and planting them will save you a ton of time and energy, but it's up to you to make that decision. Interacting with your plants will teach you a lot, and we think that's the best way to learn!
Are you experiencing intense summer weather? How is your garden responding? Let us know in the comments!

I’m so glad to find your channel. I find that following local gardeners (I’m in Tempe) is the most beneficial because of the climate challenges specific to the desert. I learn a lot from the local gardeners but I especially enjoy yours because your vision for your garden/yard resonates more with my vision for my yard. I’m trying to create a lush sanctuary to spend time in and grow some unique, yummy food. Right now I am concentrating on trees to provide shade for other plants and help prevent heat gain in my house. Noise abatement is another important goal (I live in a flight path and sometimes have planes flying over my yard every two minutes). I like that you have diversity in your planting’s and include ornamentals. I love jasmine and early this morning after cleaning up after Mother Nature’s stormy rearrangement of if my yard, I sat watching the sunrise and inhaling the intoxicating scent of the Arabian Jasmine. I love your pergola with the passion fruit. One of my projects is to build a pergola covered with vines. I just couldn’t find a vine that “spoke” to me. The passion fruit is definitely a contender. Lastly, kudos for following your dreams. Wishing you much contentment and success with your adventures.

Thank you so much for the kind words! What we've learned is that everything in our yard serves a purpose, even if it isn't food for us. We love creating habitats for the lizards, toads, birds, and bugs that share this space for us, and we treasure our ornamental plants just as much as our edible plants! They all bring us peace and happiness :D We love that your yard is bringing you that same vibe :) Thank you for sharing and have an awesome day!

Heavily woodchipping transformed my garden. I am glad to see other people using mulch. The more life in the garden the better. I mulch all over even areas I do not plan on planting in. It allows for roots to spread out furthur, more space for worms and other life to live and breed, holds more water in the soil and helps compost overall in the garden Nice steady camera work by the way, that almost went unoticed
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
We definitely believe the power of mulch, but the best mulch we ever had brought it was a mix of leaves AND wood chips -- it broke down so fast, but the worms loved the composting leaves!! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Brandon and Alyssa, Everything is looking great, thank you so much for the soursop update, it’s nice to see that it’s holding on. I’m still afraid since mine is still pretty young, it seems to be doing fairly good indoors In a west facing window, lots of new Leaf growth and a few new branches, hoping that the trunk will put a little more girth on it before I maybe attempt to stick it out next spring. Both myself and my wife are about a year behind your footsteps in our efforts in the backyard, but at least last year we were able in the fall to bring in 12 truckloads of wood chips from the tree arborist. i’m not sure of the variety of our Jubie tree it has thorns and fruit is round and the wife loves them since she’s from China, but you’re absolutely correct the hotter it gets the better it grows. we got our Mulberry put in last fall showing some pretty good growth, and of course our Moringa is now about 7 foot tall, our plans that he’ll be providing shade for our carrie and kent mango, Also this spring we threw in Goldfinger and a lactan banana, you’re right they sure like to be fed, Anyway thank you for the Terrific review of your garden And your inspiration to keep us going. What’s the name of the digget? Nursery you’re mentioning and where they located? Thanks Matthew Laveen, AZ Oh yeah almost forgot awesome day to both of you

Wow that's awesome, thanks so much for sharing the update! That's a ton of wood chips, it must have taken forever to get those spread out :D Can't wait to hear more about your garden's progress! An inspiring video, I need inspiration in this heat, I live in Phoenix too. I envied you for your beautiful loquats, I love them with a passion, can you please share what makes them happy? I bought a little one from Greg and tried to baby it, I think I did everything wrong though, evidently, cause it's dying. I put it in a pot so I could move it around into shade as summer came, right now it is in almost total shade. Would it have been happier in the ground? Also, I think the potting mix I bought at that same event retains way too much water, so the roots may be rotting. I would love to save it so any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you!
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
We lost our first few loquats to the summer heat, but we have one in full sun in the front yard and it's doing just fine through its second summer, go figure :P Keeping it in a pot to move around is a smart idea, just make sure it's staying appropriately hydrated. Getting at least some sun shouldn't kill it, as long as it's morning sun :) Hope that helps!

I live in tucson and my yard is basically a vacant lot. What is the first step to a garden in this heat?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
Great question! What we wish we had done fat the beginning was plant shade trees, because shade is invaluable in the summer! Plant fruit trees that can tolerate our weather (citrus, stonefruit, pomegranates, etc), mangos and avocados are much tricker and need microclimates to really do well in our opinion! You can start a vegetable/herb garden anytime, just give it some shade through the summer. Mulch, ground covers, and basically any kind of plant will help cool down the yard. Hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out if you have more questions or would like a consultation! :D greeniedigs.com

@19:00 check the soil pH on your mango tree.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
The pH in most of our "islands" is around 6.8, but we haven't checked that area in a while, great suggestion :D

Where did you get your clumping bamboo
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
There are a few nurseries in town that carry bamboo, we will be ordering our next plant online from Tropical Bamboo in FL.

Our friend Pam sells moringa seeds over there at seedbankbox.com, our giant moringa actually came from her a couple years ago!

What do you think of Goji Berry out here? 😊
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
It definitely grows! Wolfberry (either another name for goji berry or a very close relative, can't remember!) actually grows native out here, we see it all the time when we go hiking :D

@GreeniesGarden

We like to water in the morning, but we come outside and spray down the yard in the afternoon sometimes too :D

⚘⚘ Yep in summer if I can manage the time with work I do both morning & evenings for papayas & bananas in the hot end of summer even a 3rd time in the middle of the day not wetting any leaves, this summer should be better with the mulch being laid down.⚘⚘

where do you get your wood chips ??
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
We have sissoo trees in the neighborhood that get heavily pruned every summer, we talked to the landscapers and had them deliver the wood chips to our driveway when they were finished up. You can also try Chip Drop!

do y'all boil the mexican tree spinach before eating? I was told that certain species needs toxins boiled out.
@GreeniesGarden

We actually haven't tried eating it yet! We'll probably google that before we do :D Thanks for the heads up!

@GreeniesGarden

Dig It Gardens on 16th St and Thomas in Phoenix is the best source for bamboo in our opinion! :D

Watch out. When bamboo flowers it dies... you need that shade badly
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
Good point! From our research, most bamboo species only flower every 50-100 years or so, so we'll take our chances for now :D Thanks for bringing that up though!
