Super Paper Mario is a functioning video game. When your press a button on the controller, the character on screen will move in correspondence to the button press. It's a game that manages to make the concept of traveling through dimensions boring as shit.

3:41 Bobbery’s backstory is one of the few times where I legit cried over a video game character, especially from a Mario game. His backstory was incredible, but tragic. Wish we had this kind of character depth in a Mario game again.

While I had a lot of fun with super paper mario and can still enjoy the game, I totally understand your problems with it and even agree on several aspects. I really like a lot of your criticisms and I think that this is really well done. I'd be willing to see more negative reviews of things you don't like since you actually explain your points well.

It would be nice if he wasn't so trashy talking way though hehe, also some of the stories of other characters are at least are as tragic I felt as Admiral Bobbery, but in a different way. Bowser being one in his probably best portrayals in a game close to Inside Story and maybe Odyseey, being beaten up my Mario but doesn't give up.

This is the kind of thing I look for when I actually want someones opinion on a game. You deliver it well, and you constructively give reasons as to why you don't like it. So many people online these days try to spew their opinions as fact instead of just examining and discussing why they may not like something. I absolutely adore this series of videos and this may be one of my favourites. So thank you for making something not only entertaining but something that can actually initiate a discussion instead of an argument :).

Oh man, this game is my childhood- the first game I played on the wii, and I played it with my mother. I remember her voice acting all the characters for me, and letting me play some parts, even though I was crap at it. Although back then I didn’t understand the storyline, recently I replayed it and I adored every part, especially the story. I know this game isn’t for everyone, but I can’t help but say this is my favorite game of all time- or at least my favorite Nintendo game.

I always thought Bleck was being controlled by the Dark Prognosticus, so it wasn't him just being an "angsty teenager" but he wasn't completely in control of himself until after he was defeated.
@HyperCharge
@HyperCharge 8 лет назад
Yeah, It's clear from the story that the Dark Prognosticus takes control over Blumiere. I wouldn't really say it's Count Bleck who is the angsty teenager, but it's Blumiere. It's pretty clear right before his father explains the implications of opening the book. "I do not care, father! A world without her is empty. a LIFE without her is empty." This is the most angsty bullshit ever. Even if Tippi was able to awaken Blumiere from the power of the Dark Prognosticus, Blumiere is such a whiny little cunt that it's hard for me to take him so seriously. Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story, but they at least just committed suicide. Blumiere wants to wipe out all dimensions because of one person. It's just so ridiculous, especially when you realize that he only decided to stop because Timpani was still alive. He would have been perfectly content with destroying the world and all dimensions and realities if Tippi was dead.
@nickk3077
@nickk3077 3 года назад
@@HyperCharge I mean, yeah, Count Bleck is very overdramatic and very much in the wrong... but he’s the villain. Villains tend to overdramatize things and do really evil things. And even though his reason to destroy the world may appear petty, at least it’s a step up from Sir Grodus’ reasons, which is no reason really other than to be super powerful and evil. Personally, I don’t think Tippi and the Dark Prognosticus’ corruption were the ONLY reasons why Count Bleck was seemingly ok with destroying all worlds. I believe it was also because it seemed the Dark Prognosticus foretold that he’d be the one to destroy all worlds and that after he started it, he knew it couldn’t be stopped. It’s not like he could have done anything to prevent it at the time, so he tried to only accept it. There are times where he second guesses himself before meeting Timpani again too. I wouldn’t say there is ever a good reason to start the destruction of all of reality. But from Blumiere’s perspective, he was raised in loveless society against marriage, so basically he was already more corrupt than your average person. That all changed once he met a woman named Timpani, who was the only non-toxic person he’s ever met and introduced him to love and made his life whole. Besides her, Blumiere only knew of his family from The Tribe of Darkness that practically killed Timpani the only good thing that he’s ever known. The only other thing that Blumiere has ever known, his own family, had betrayed him and he didn’t care if they all disappeared. At heart, Blumiere was still somewhat corrupted by the the tribe of darkness’ lack of love and didn’t have any support from Timpani anymore. Blumiere also felt an animosity towards other realities because they were also the part of the reason why he couldn’t see Timpani anymore. Yeah, to some, Blumiere’s motives might seem a bit forced, but I believe that’s all up to personal opinion. I can realistically see Blumiere having enough of a reason to do the horrible things he did. But even it does seem forced and unrealistically awful, keep in mind that he is the villain still and that villains aren’t in the right and that’s ok. But, I digress. Sam, you can have a different opinions. That’s perfectly fine!

I personally enjoyed Super Paper Mario, but I enjoy how you made a video that didn't just praise a game. I love to hear your opinion on the game, and I honestly like it when you sometimes criticize a game. If you believe that a game is garbage, I am completely fine with that. Not everything needs to be praised for being fantastic, we all need to see the bad things from time to time. Basically what I'm trying to say here is that I enjoyed how you changed up the video format, from games that you love, to one that you really don't like. It's really nice to see, continue doing games you love, but also ones you really just hate. Loved the video! Thanks for creating!

You can steal it all from a vault. The problem is that in order to get the code to the vault, you have to grind out 10,000 rubees to get it from a prisoner. Getting 10,000 on the hamster wheel is what takes about 10 minutes. There is no other way to get the code, other then maybe looking it up online and cheating your way through the chapter. It's probably more around 8, but you have to get on and off a couple of times to see how much money you made.

This is the first review I've ever seen of Super Paper Mario that was negative but actually pretty justified in explaining itself. I personally prefer SPM to PM64; it's simply more interesting in plot and characters though the gameplay is a little worse. I think TTYD has simply spoiled me though and makes me think that 64's isn't as good as it is. Though the partners in 64 are good, they aren't nearly as good as people think they are. Like the pixls, they don't talk much for the rest of the game either once their chapter is over. The ones in TTYD however, are definitely the best and are quite personable. What puts SPM past 64 for me is it simply feels deeper in dialogue all together I guess. There were more moments in Chapter 3 of SPM that made me laugh than the entirety of PM64, but I do admit that it takes it too far sometimes (like you point out in Chapter 5). I found the super long code to be really funny actually, but it kinda takes it too far. Essentially, the game tries too hard to be funny I guess. One thing I'm surprised about is how you didn't mention the apple hunt in Chapter 7-3 with all the other tedious stuff you mentioned. This is the worst part of the game for me. I had much more fun with this game the second time I played it weirdly (which was years later) but perhaps it was because I already knew the secrets / just wrote down codes that saved some time. Anyways these are legitimate points, so good stuff and it made me rethink this game a little. However, I still think you're putting it out to be worse than it is. The gameplay isn't that bad honestly, I still had fun with it. Switching out to change between Mario / Peach is just like switching out partners in the first 2 games, so I really don't see the big deal with that.
@HyperCharge
@HyperCharge 8 лет назад
I talked about a lot of the apple hunting stuff, but I decided to cut it. I was just repeating myself too much, mostly about the bland platforming and boring back tracking, which I already talked about. TTYD is clearly much better than PM64, but I personally feel that it's unfair to judge a game based off later games in the series. PM64 partners were a bit more bland then the partners in TTYD, but that's because TTYD was able to raise the bar and build off of the success of PM64. With the creation of the entire combat system, TTYD was able to spend more time creating more unique characters and establishing the standard we now have today. I think what makes PM64 special was that it was never a game that was suppose to make you laugh. It was a cute little turn based RPG, with some clever and gimmicky combat. The story wasn't nearly as important because it just wasn't suppose to be. The story acts as an excuse for Mario and his partners to explore the world in search for the Star Spirits and it was never anything more special then that. TTYD was able to make a better story and turned it into something much greater, but it was only able to do that because PM64 existed in the first place. All the building blocks were in place for TTYD to make a great game. SPM isn't nearly in the same position. It's the third game in the series that is also able to build off of PM64 and TTYD. It sadly didn't and went into a completely different direction. It had the chance to build off of the first two games, but decided to enter uncharted territory instead. You could argue that since it's not similar to PM64 or TTYD that I shouldn't judge it this way, but ignoring the first two games means that it might as well not even be in the Paper Mario series to begin with. My personal problem with switching between Mario/Peach is just how pointless it really is. Since the entire game requires you to switch between 2D and 3D, you need to be playing as Mario for the majority of the game. The only thing that Peach adds to the game is the ability to go over large gaps and shes basically a glorified Pixl character. You could replace Peach with an umbrella Pixl and nothing would change. You could replace Luigi with a spring Pixl and nothing would change. Bowser is a little bit different by being much slower, doing more damage, and being able to spit out fire. Playing as the four characters really just seems like an after thought and they could have done much more to make the character swapping more interesting.
@HDRookie
@HDRookie 8 лет назад
I can agree completely, really. I like SPM more than PM64 personally head to head as games but it's undeniable that 64 was a much more important game in the series. Good video still, was well thought out.

Sorry man, but you didn't succeed in dethroning this game as my favorite of all time. I might have been slightly irritated when encountering the block combination or hamster wheel parts on my first playthrough, but on every other playthrough I just look up the codes online. Sure that might indicate less than decent gameplay but not enough to make the story any less amazing. You know what? I don't give a damn if parts of the plot are cliche. They're not cliche _for a Mario game_ and that's what matters to me. I was tired of seeing the same thing in every Mario game: Bowser kidnaps Peach, now go save her. The pre-Sticker Star Mario RPGs usually changed that up, and SPM is no exception. I tolerate the worst of this game's gameplay because the story is so worth it to me. Count Bleck did what no other Mario villain did: act out of a tragic backstory and not greed or desire for power. Look at every other villain. Bowser? Wants to rule the Mushroom Kingdom. Wario? Wants money, even when he's the protagonist. Cackletta? Wants to rule the Beanbean Kingdom with the Beanstar. Grodus? Wants to resurrect the Shadow Queen to rule the world. Shroobs? Want to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. Fawful? Wants to take over the world with the Dark Star. Dimentio? Wants to rebuild the universe in his own image. Antasma? Wants to rule the world (though it is hinted that he would have been happy with just freedom) I don't hate any of those villains (and Fawful is one of my favorites for that matter) but you can't deny they all share a common motivation: power or greed. Bleck was more than willing to destroy himself along with the world. And you know what? I can relate to him; I don't talk about this much anymore but for the sake of it I will: I am still getting over a breakup from years ago. I know how it feels to lose your one true love. I haven't done anything as drastic as him, but I know how he feels. So yeah. Not a bad game. I'm sick of people putting it on the negative spectrum with storyless Sticker Star rather than with the first two games that actually had stories.
@HyperCharge
@HyperCharge 7 лет назад
I think there's a big difference between relating to someone and sympathizing with them. Count Bleck's actions throughout the entire game are basically on par with a school shooter. You can relate to his struggles, but you can't argue that his actions are justified at all, so I can't ultimately sympathize with him as a character. At the end of the story, you should feel like everything Count Bleck did was completely understandable from his point of view, but it just isn't. You can relate to the loss of his lover, but you can't sympathize with him as a character, because the ends don't justify the means. The only reason I criticized the story so much was because it's one of the most highly praised things about this game. When I initially talked about the game in some of my older videos, people seemed to praise it as some kind of masterpiece. I initially decided to revisit the game because of this response, but I was just even more disappointed. I don't play video games for the story. I play video games to play a fun game. If I wanted to hear a story, I would maybe watch a movie, or read a book. The strength of the earlier Paper Mario games was that they were simply great video games. If PM64, TTYD, and SPM were stripped of their stories entirely, TTYD would still be the best game in the series. It has the improved combat system from PM64, with enough depth to keep you entertained the entire way through. If you remove the story from SPM, you have a bland platforming game where you switch to 3D every now and then. Even if you strip the story of some of the other Mario RPG's, they are still competent games that are still fun to play. The disagreement between people who like Super Paper Mario has made me question what people liked about the first two Paper Mario games in the first place. It seems that most people who enjoyed Super Paper Mario only liked the first two games for their colorful visuals and quirky story, where as people who don't like Super Paper Mario liked the first two games because it was a good video game first, with a quirky story on the side.
@Surgemaster2012
@Surgemaster2012 7 лет назад
My main issue with the game is the fanbase overrates it to obnoxious degrees treating it as if it's a Masterpiece. There' no denying that the story is the best of the entire series, but is the story really the reason to dethrone the other's simply because it tells a story? It seems people only cared about the story , than caring why the first two games are great in the first place. When we first played the Original did anybody really care about the story? Not really we liked it because IT WAS AN RPG! Super only gets a free middle ground simply because the story people envisioned carries it for them based on the "masterpiece" they built up. Even stripping 64 of the simplistic story it had the game is still fun to play. And honestly I hate when people use this game to solely bash 64's simplicity and rate it lower just because of the story. Honestly taking the story out of the equation entirely amounts to a mediocre game. In the fans who like this game admit the gameplay is the worst/weakest part, yet still define this game as 2nd best or best because of the story, yet admit the other two have better gameplay that makes no sense? I feel bad you have to deal with backlash simply because people overrate this game. I can see where the love comes from, but to base a game entirely on story why even call it a game in that case? They might as well just be watching the cutscenes on RU-vid. People are acting like you can't criticize the game's story simply because of their envisioned minds it's a masterpiece. It's basically stating nobody is allowed to have any disagreements against the story and I noticed how defensive people get over the game. Yet I've seen people criticize certain things in TTYD's story. People also forget 64 did have some degree of lore in it's areas (minus a couple) and the part of the story with the Star spirits. And to be quiet honest, taking the lead characters out of the equation: Those being= Bleck, Tippi, Mimi, O'Chunks, Dimentio (admittedly the best part of the game), Merlon, Nolrem, Queen Jaydes, Luvbi, Merlee and Nastasia every character is either completely uninteresting or bland. I mean Flipside and Flopside's residents have 0 personality and even have less of a purpose than the Toads of Toad Town. I mean sure the partners in 64 didn't have too much personality and only bits and pieces came up every now and then, but they were at least characters. They had lives, families, friends etc. The Pixels are literally 1 step behind in that they're complete blank slates! I've even seen people defend the Pixels in that "just because they're partners it's enough of a reason to make them good, who cares if they have no personality?" Yet these same people with bash 64's partners for not having enough characterization despite them being more of people than the actual Pixels themselves who get less lines and serve less of a purpose and have no reason to join Mario other than the story requires them. That logic is so biased and contradicting. I don't hate the game (well aside from the horrible gameplay, platforming, level design and poor design elements) I hate people's overreactions to the game if anything else.
@RebirthRex

It seems like maybe this is a differing opinion in what someone wants in a game. A great example is the Persona series. Some people play it for it's unique Persona fusing mechanics which produce some surprisingly deep combat. While other's may enjoy the world and Social Link(P3-P4/Cooperation(P5) process. Which is 1 half of the game. Believe it or not people enjoy games as a mean of storytelling that isn't just books or movies, because just having even the SMALLEST amount of involvement, like again the social, world, and dating aspects of Persona, makes them all that much better to certain players. And that's why they exist. Also I hate the combat in Paper Mario N64 due to the nature of ONLY having Mario as the main, and the partners not having any HP, which was an amazing improvement in TTYD which made the combat so much more engaging. This however, isn't a big draw back for most people, and that's fine. But as I understand that, stating as fact that something just "isn't justifiable" is wrong. People WILL see things differently, so it's not a fact. People connect, see things, and want different things, and besides some exceptions, "poor" aspects in games to you are amazing aspects to others. There's nothing wrong with hating SPM, but it's also easy to see others DO connect and DO justify the romantic subplot and main predominant characters, which there is also nothing wrong with.
@HyperCharge
@HyperCharge 7 лет назад
@RebirthRex I agree with you. Everything I've said up to this point has been my opinion. I know it's an opinion, because I wrote it. Even saying that TTYD accomplishes more in 5 minutes than SPM can accomplish throughout the entire game is an opinion. It's a very unpopular opinion that's hard to argue, but I'm willing to argue it.

I play games for story and good gameplay...but for PM story is #1 and it's not like a game just having a good story means your sitting there and doing nothing...SPM had fun and fast gameplay and cool puzzles and lots to do...lots of games with no story wouldn't be fun to me....that's like saying TTYD with no story for example...you just non stop fight generic enemies and that's...can't have dialogue or cool new bosses since there's no story so it would just be you walking around an area with no unique people and fighting enemies...idk but to me games need stories and for games like PM I especially play them for the story...

Yes, the story is decent, and Count Bleck's story is good, but besides that, the gameplay and side characters are mediocre at best. Yes, it's better than Sticker Star and Color Splash, but it's not hard to be better than dog shit.

Hmmmm So, I watched the entire video and... You know what, even if I disagree severaly on some point you made about the story and in particular Count Bleck (He isn't just a one note character that act like a selfish teenager that wanted to destroy the world because MY ONLY LOVE ONE IS DEAD, in exemple, in the story, it's cleary show that he care and respect about his henchman. At first, he wanted to destroy all world, but later on, after he recruited all of his minion, he promised to them that they would create the world they wanted. Again, it may seem like nosense to you. But for me, along with alot of other things that I am not going to go in detail here or else this post is going to way longer that I want, it show that Count Bleck isn't like basically every other Mario vilain who only think about themself and no one else and just want to destroy the world because EVULZ, *COUGH* The Shadow Queen *COUGH*). I will admit that, I did laugh at some point on the video and some your point are right, notably, the game is way too easy. That, I won't defend it. It's clear as day that while the gameplay concept was interesting. In the end, the platform is really too basic, the boss are jokes and some puzzle are not fun to do at all. (Which is why I would have prefer if they make a sequel that fixed all of those problem but NOPE HERE STICKER, YOU SEE THEM? YOU LIKE THEM? GREAT, BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY THING YOU ARE GOING TO USE ALONG THOSE "THING" IF YOU WANT TO DEFEAT THE BOSS THAT REQUIRE YOU TO HAVE THE THING THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOU HAD TO USE AND NOW EVEN IF YOU HAVE ALL THE STICKER IN THE WORLD YOU ARE GOING TO DIE BECAUSE FUCK YOU SUCKER). Brief, my point is, if you hate this game. I am not going to make a rant about how stupid you are because I love this game and how wrong you are for disliking. Because it will be pointless, we are all human with different opinion with different taste and all that kind of shit that make us a stupid species. I prefer simply disagree with you and continue to love one of the first game I ever played with a story and character I still love. A game that make me want to play the first two Paper Mario games and make me love them, and that I wouldn't have any interest in them if it wasn't for SPM coming into my life when I was young. Remember that part you made about nerd?Always being angry at the little trivial thing and couldn't accept the opinion of others? Yeah, I didn't want to be an exemple of that point. You hate the gameplay? Yeah, I understand how someone could hate it, especially if you are of the two first PM. You dislike the character writting? Fine, some of them is not for everyone and it have some problem on others. You tought that the story was overrated? Well...while I love the story, I wouldn't say it's the greatest story ever when it come to story in general. But it's a great "Mario" story in my mind, I have seen better story using the same point, but for how it was in a Mario game and that, it was really well done (again, for me). I just couldn't help but love every little point about it. And I love the story of 64 and TTYD too (And the gameplay too)! For different reason of course but I still really like them! Brief-Brief, I hope I do not sound too much like a nostalgia fanboy (even if it's true

You have to realize that a lot of the negativity in this video comes from a previous video I made about the Paper Mario series not returning to what it once was. In that previous video, I talked about my dislike of Super Paper Mario, but a ton of people jumped me for claiming that it was just as good as the previous games, if not better. So, when I finally came back to play this game, It felt even more frustrating as a result. At the end of the day, I don't really care that much. It's just video games after all. I do defend everything I've said in this video, because I genuinely hate this game, but I don't understand the praise it gets.

HyperCharge Yeah, I didn't watch the video in order, but I really wanted a constructif comment on this video alone that, probably wouldn't change your opinion due to how you cleary say you hate it. But atleast show that a fan of this game could agree and disagree with some of your point, but in at the end of the day, could understand why you hate it but love, or just like the point the game did right. I mean, in this age of people getting triggered for everything. I felt like that, I would have just proved your point if I had wrotted a comment without thinking 3 times in my head and that you would have not taken seriously at all. Brief, in short, thank you for answering this comment, let's agree to disagree on this game and I look forward to see more of your video in the futur. ^^ (Btw, your video on the Zelda Timeline was really funny and made a good point about the Zelda fanbase taking the timeline too much seriously)

Whilst I don't particularly agree on some of your points, I find it interesting to see such a unique take on the game. I mean, personally, with the story, I absolutely love it, but I look at it from a very different angle, with trying to understand how the dominant themes of love are incorporated into the story. But I get this view point. Yes...Despite this being one of my favourite games, it's easy to see that the game play is quite lacking, so fair enough- And opinions are opinions, so I'm glad to hear some honest ones!

01:20 That is true, but when you think about it, TTYD didn't do it much differently, did it? PM64 was the only one to have a connected world. 02:20 I agree that the pixls are boring, but they're not really supposed to be the replacement for partners, that's what Peach, Bowser and Luigi (well, and Tippi) are for. 05:10 Okay, that was a pretty stupid design choice, there's no beating around the bush there. 10:16 Yeah, that part is pretty dumb as well. 16:47 Well it is more of a Paper Mario game than the two that come after it are. It's hard to explain,but it still has the same atmosphere to it (at least to me). Sticker Star and Colour Splash feel like they'd been developed by entirely different people whereas Super Paper Mario feels like the people from PM64 and TTYD are still behind it, but they tried something different (which turned out to be something not everybody likes, which I can understand).
@HyperCharge
@HyperCharge 7 лет назад
TTYD isn't perfectly connected like the first game, but I feel like it it at least gave a better illusion of it. Some of the levels connecting by a different means of transportation (boat,train,blimp), while the other levels were just connected via pipes. The pipes work in roughly the same way, but at least each entrance was spread out throughout the underground. These pipe locations work in the same way, but I'd argue that's it's way better than literally placing the entrances right next to each other. There was something a little exciting about finding the location of the next area in PM and TTYD, where SPM kind of takes the fun out of it. I do think that Super Paper Mario does have that "charm" in terms of writing and personality, but I always felt that part of the charm was the turn based combat. They could have done something slightly different, but I think the outright removal of it was a bad idea. It's still a fine video game, but I feel like SPM doesn't stand out amongst other video games as a result, where PM and TTYD have the complete package. To be fair, a lot of my frustrating in this video comes from a HUGE backlash I got when I talked about SPM before. I decided to play through this game again to see if I was wrong, but I came away disliking the game even more.

@@HyperCharge I mean, I don't think it's necessarily lazy, just a different setup, utilizing the platform linear style of levels to it. It also makes sense why they're a bit disjointed, because the worlds you are going in SPM are from parallel worlds rather than the same world like TTYD and 64 did. Kind of want to catchup with the artwork -- frankly I don't mind, seeing it's based in a separate world from Mario, with their own art style. Simplicity works for this game, at least to me.

I'm more positive about this game than you are, but Super Paper Mario is definitely a step down from its predecessors (though not nearly as bad to Sticker Star, of course). This game is flawed because it's long and not very deep, making it repetitive. I believe that this game would've been so much better if it was shorter, be it through quicker movement/combat and/or less dialogue, busywork, and filler. Additionally, having a deeper combat system that utilized more buttons, directions, motions, and/or the Nunchuk to perform different moves and combos would've made for an interesting action RPG/platformer with more engaging gameplay.

Yes I agree with the review wholeheartedly. Fans love to defend this game solely for its story alone and tbh that's pretty much the only thing that everyone brings up about this game. About 95% of fans of this game solely like it because of the story and characters, yet taking them out of the equation this game is very mediocre. People also get upset and use other game's a scapegoats simply because of the story, a good story is good yes, and going by overall Mario standards this is the darkest or at least most in-depth of the entire series. But I have to agree the art style and design is really bad. All of the characters are just made from polygon's and disfigured shapes. Hell some even come down to basic stick figures with just clothes (Looking at you Flint Cragley) that's not really a creative design choice. And honestly taking out Count Bleck and his sympathetic motives, Tippi's development as well as Mimi, O Chunk's, Nastasia and Dimentio (the best villain) about 90% of the characters are honestly boring or just not very interesting beyond the main NPCs such as Merlon, Merlee and Nolrem. The worst 64's characterization suffered was lacking too much of something or just not getting enough of said character, here some characters come off as being total blanks slates with no personality at all, even LESS than 64. I also don't like how 64 gets hate from fanboys of the game while only using the story as an excuse to go against it, despite admitting the gameplay is inferior. Super is fun to watch, but not play at all. There's a difference between being different and fun to play and different to the point of go back to the past. I don't get the people who say that they rank Super as the second best, putting it in-between TTYD and the original while bashing the original. The only reason given is that "Super has a great story, but it's gameplay isn't good enough to beat TTYD". So you prefer the game with the inferior gameplay over the game that established the formula perfected in TTYD? The gameplay that you consider inferior, over the original? What? That makes no sense to me, because you're downright saying that TTYD has better gameplay, therefore admitting that the original ALSO has better gameplay. To me it sounds as if their judgement of the story is enough to solely carry the game as a whole, but contradict such statements by admitting the gameplay was better, despite it being the main reason people bash Super. That being said the story is great, the best in the series and I can see where the love comes from in that regard. But a game shouldn't be solely defiant on that. 64 has more entertaining gameplay to me. Which is why I go with the TTYD, 64 and Super fans. The Pixels are nothing more than tools of progression, they don't feel like partners at all by rather glorified items locked into a specific ability. It's like if all the partners could do in 64 and TTYD was their field abilities and nothing else. the Pixels also never say a word of dialogue beyond their intros and have no personality. They just say a bunch of random gibberish. The Gameplay is a huge mess, I always hated the flip-mechanic because of how it contradicts itself. It makes no sense to Flip from 2-D to 3-D and slowly take damage in the 3-D plain. This mechanic is just stupid, why does the player take damage just from being in 3-D for so long? Not only does the game never give a reason, but there would be no consequences to do so! Especially since the reward for completing the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials is the ability to have infinite 3-D, so if that's the case WHY ISN'T THIS AN OPTION FROM THE START?! Constantly taking damage adds nothing and hinders progress unnecessarily. I also agree that the game relies heavily on memorization trial and error. Such as Chapter 2, which is very boring. And don't even get me started on how boring, slow and tedious Chapter 4 is! The platforming is boring and every world began to feel the same after a while. It also feels kinda strange going 2-D to 3-D when the previous games were 2D characters on 3D planes. The platforming elements are so boring. Now this game isn't bad for being a platformer, but rather the platform elements themselves do not work with Paper Mario's style. It has the most tedious and dull platforming gameplay I've ever seen from a Mario game, with very dull level designs. It feels so slow and constantly jumping on enemies is a rather boring way to kill enemies. I also don't like the Level up system because it's locked on a set stat, meaning you can't choose what you want to level up. I also hated the frequent trips to the menu screen. Part of what made 64 and TTYD fun is you could literally choose your own style leveling up. But here it's constantly fixed between HP and Attack. Also using the Pixel's and character's shallow/one-note abilities got boring. There's nothing diverse about their abilities or even using them in creative ways beyond the selected sections they're needed. Unlike the partners which added different variety in how they played or were used.

@Surgemaster2012
@Surgemaster2012 6 лет назад
It pretty much is. Though my opinions with Super Paper Mario have changed, I love the game as much as the first to. But the fanbase of the game are just terrible. They are so defensive and feel the need to force others to think exactly like their point of view. If it doesn't hold up to how they think the game should be criticism free they constantly rant about how "the story is great, the story is the best of the series" while it is true that's not excuse to force your opinions just because someone else thinks differently. I think Super Paper Mario and Color Splash have the worst fanbases in regards to Paper Mario, TTYD isn't completely innocent either, as some do hold it in higher regards than normal, but most flak against it are already stated qualms people have to begin with. You can even ask challenge runners or people who have viewed the game in its entire complexity and they'll even give an unbiased opinion. Color Splash fans inflate this and go on a ridged point of view that fans see the game beyond criticism simply because they've built that mentality, while they do have some weight and some fans actually do that, CS fans simultaneously do the same thing when defending CS against the criticism by looking past all its issues and disclaiming the game even has issues while inflating TTYD's. Which makes them hypocrites because they do the exact same thing they preach against. So its okay for TTYD to have flaws but not Color Splash? It also doesn't help that they barely even point out flaws with CS and the actual flaws with the game the see as an oversight because the enjoy the game on a fundamental level, yet TTYD can't be enjoyed or liked past its flaws? I also hate how the try and use Color Splash's humor to validate against any form of criticism, despite the fact humor is in the same league as music in which its ENTIRELY subjective and totally based on fan perspective, you can't use self preference to validate something as a truth against criticism. Yes Color Splash does have some entertaining and fun moments I give it credit in that regard, but the humor isn't for everyone and is entirely subjective. Super Paper Mario fans are overly defense and use the game's story (which is the of the series standards) as nothing more than a crutch to place the game on a high point of view, rather than view the story as a legitimate positive. As anytime someone has any problems with the game on a level design or gameplay level (which is does and are the game's single greatest flaws) they instantly turn defense and use out of character claims that the game is underrated (even though its more praised than hated by a general POV) and you are not allowed to hate the game because of the story's quality, this basically means you aren't allowed to criticize a game for its level design or gameplay (two important aspects of a game's structure) simply because the story is good. By this logic you might as well not play the game at all and just watch LPs of it. Way to indirectly state playing the game isn't a strongsuit. Its perfectly fine to look past a game's faults because you admire the aspects it does right, but with all I've stated neither one does that, and only uses what they do right to avoid any backlash they get because it doesn't align their POV. I enjoy Super Paper Mario's story, characters and gameplay, even though the gameplay is terribly simplified and unbalanced. The level design is easily the worst part of the game, as well as taking damage from the flip mechanic, which is a pointless addition that makes no sense. Honestly Paper Mario 64 seems to be the only one with fans who don't really place on either side, its either used as a shield to defense against other games or bashed for its story and characters entirely to defend against having originality because (which seems very obtuse for people who bash other Mario games from suffering unoriginality, yet those same people defend CS's lack their of originality simply because of a few positives, even though it matches directly with Nintendo's modern view of simplifying Mario's creativity.. But this logic they are encouraging them to make games stagnate as long as it has something good even though they bashed other game's of the same light for not focusing on being original), it never seems to be on any side unless used as a crutch.

Still better than Paper Mario 64 tho. Better story, better world building, and even better (and quite creative) gameplay. Super Paper Mario only fails because people are pissed off at its existence and the fact that it's a platformer RPG instead of a turn based RPG, and are thus biased from the start. The Thousand Year Door as a game is only slightly better, but as a Paper Mario game it is the FAR superior game. However, Super Paper Mario is by FAR my personal favorite in the series and probably my favorite 2D game on the Wii. But hey, at least the three games aren't Sticker Star! XP
@Michaelwwest98
@Michaelwwest98 8 лет назад
To be fair, it's not perfect, but for anyone who's familiar with 2D platformers in general, it's pretty refreshing at first, and by the time it gets stale, you'll be at Chapter 2, where the creative worldbuilding and character development REALLY starts. The game may PLAY like a 2D platformer with RPG elements, but its world is a fully fledged and memorable RPG world with many different originally themed areas, MUCH more interesting than Paper Mario 64 and Sticker Star's mostly generic "grass then desert then haunted forest, etc etc etc" (which to be fair, that's what Chapter 1 of SPM is, but again that's only one chapter. Sticker Star it's the whole game and PM64 it's half the game). From a world and character building perspective, Super Paper Mario has definitely got 64 and especially Sticker Star beat

You do realize TTYD had a Grassland for it's Chapter 1 too? All Mario games have these levels in some shape or form. What 64 uses is familiarity, not just watered down “Peach gets captured, Generic locations beat Bowser the end” the familiar elements are presented, however it’s their to add the identity to the series. With 64 it has the excuse to start off basic because you can’t go into something drastic as SPM’s story for an established series, than the transitions would be poor. There’s more at stake than just stopping Bowser. The game actually gives the player more of a reason to stop Bowser beyond saving Peach and does introduce the unique dynamic between him and Kammy Koopa. Bowser steals the wishes of the world and a magical artifact created by ancient beings, plus he captures the guardians of set mystical items. In fact Peach getting kidnapped is more of a side prize like, he’s manage to claim victory in his hands, and Peach is the extra slice. Peach at least does something but serve as a blank reward and Bowser talks. Is Dry Dry Desert a Desert area? Yes, however unlike Sticker Star the dialogue gives justification for it’s existence. It actually was home to a race of Nomadic Mousers who even built the mysterious Ruins. All of the NPCs who live there are decedents of the Nomadics who once lived in the Desert. It’s not just there to solely be a desert there’s a story behind it. There's actually a bit more than people think if you don't look at it by just aesthetics alone. Also the "Haunted Forest" portion of Chapter 3 only makes up basically the HUB setting for the Chapter it's not the main area or even dungeon of the Game, it's a Gusty Terrain inhabited by Boos and a castle that sits on top of the Gusty Terrain, that's the actual main area, not the "Haunted Ghost House" There's even some story behind Chapter 7's dungeon (small, but there) Also what other characters in Super Paper Mario are memorable besides Tippi, Bleck, Dimentio (best villain) , Nastasia, Merlon, Nolrem, Merlee, Mimi, Queen Jades, Luvbi and O Chuck's? The rest of the characters are boring or in the Pixel's case complete blanks slates with no personality at all. Even less than characters in 64. Who at least had a bit more things to say than irrelevant Gibberish.

You hit the nail in the head perfectly. Super Paper Mario's story goes all epic and dimension traveling happy all about saving the multiverse.....but the gameplay is garbage and has plenty of tedious moments like chapters 2 and 5. If it had been an actual RPG with actual partners and a cool new mechanic of being able to switch the leader (Mario) with some other leaders (Peach, Bowser and Luigi) it could have been so fucking amazing. But no, it has the most tedious and dull platforming gameplay I've ever seen from a Mario game, with very dull level designs. It could have been the FUCKING BEST game in the entire series, but it was held back by its change of gameplay style, the tedious bullshit (chapters 2 and 5), the horrible character designs, the amount of WORTHLESS characters like the Pixls and the overall package coming off as dull. As a video game, Super Paper Mario is the most boring, dull, repetitive and worst out of the trilogy. Hell even the story. Even the story falls flat in many areas like Count Bleck. The villain is downright considered A HERO by many people, what the actual fuck!?!? Bleck wanted to kill everyone and their happiness because he lost his happiness.....that is a very weak reason. His love story with Tippi is all cool and engaging in my opinion, but the overall arc between them isn't developed enough and makes the entire plot of the game pointless because TIMPANI IS STILL ALIVE AND BLECK ALMOST KILLS HER ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE. I like most of the plot, I like the dark prophecy being the actual real one and the light prophecy being created just to give people hope. I like some concepts like the Underwhere and the Overthere. I like that Peach, Bowser and Luigi are playable, I just don't like that they were thrown into this gameplay style, of all games. Story is good, but it doesn't beat TTYD's in my opinion because of its weak villain and motivation for said villain. Overall Super is fun *to watch* for me, but *it's not fun to replay, been trying to get into it again for almost a decade and I can't stand it enough to get pass Chapter 2.* To finish this off, I don't get the people who say that they rank Super as the second best, putting it inbetween TTYD and the original. The most popular reason given is that "Super has a great story, but it's gameplay isn't good enough to beat TTYD". So you prefer the game with the inferior gameplay over the game that established the formula perfect in TTYD? The gameplay that you consider inferior, over the original? What? That makes no sense to me, because you're downright saying that TTYD has better gameplay, therefore admitting that the original ALSO has better gameplay.

I 100% agree with everything you just typed. Literally it's all so TRUE! I don't hate the game (well aside from the horrible gameplay, platforming, level design and poor design elements) I hate people's overreactions to the game if anything else.

I'll admit that the fans really does overrate SPM, especially it's story. It's an okay game with a nice story, but it's definitely NOT a masterpiece as they made it out to be. Good story or not, it's not going to save the game from mediocrity . It's almost like Sonic and the Black Knight, neat story-line, but mediocre gameplay. While I thought the story, the characters, settings, and concepts were cool, PM64 and TTYD are way better, along with having some replability. Edit: Looking back, the game really isn't all that great, but I still kind of like it. It's fine to like SPM more than TTYD or PM64, but those two games are more well-liked than SPM.

@Surgemaster2012
@Surgemaster2012 6 лет назад
Dude its all of this video's comment section, there are even comments on other Paper Mario videos or forums of people who treat SPM as untouchable simply because of the game's story and nothing else. Though my opinions with Super Paper Mario have changed, I love the game as much as the first two. But the fanbase of the game are just terrible. They are so defensive and feel the need to force others to think exactly like their point of view. If it doesn't hold up to how they think the game should be criticism free they constantly rant about how "the story is great, the story is the best of the series" while it is true in some regards that's not excuse to force your opinions just because someone else thinks differently. I think Super Paper Mario and Color Splash have the worst fanbases in regards to Paper Mario, TTYD isn't completely innocent either, as some do hold it in higher regards than normal, which I do agree with and don't think the game is above major issues (I even think 64 does things better than it such as the level design, which is TTYD's biggest drawback), but most flak against it are already stated qualms people have to begin with. (the backtracking is something that's been stated for years) You can even ask challenge runners or people who have viewed the game in its entire complexity and they'll even give an unbiased opinion. I've seen both sides of the spectrum enough to say some have it in higher regards than normal, while other's see it has flaws, but feel its positive elements outweigh the bad ones enough to get a complete enjoyment factor. Color Splash defenders inflate this and go on a ridged point of view that fans see the game beyond criticism simply because they've built that mentality or have only seen that side of it, rather than seeing the whole experience, while they do have some weight and some TTYD fans actually do that as I've stated, CS fans simultaneously do the same thing when defending CS against the criticism by looking past all its issues and disclaiming the game even has issues while inflating TTYD's. Which makes them hypocrites because they do the exact same thing they preach against. So its okay for TTYD to have flaws but not Color Splash? It also doesn't help that they barely even point out flaws with CS so that them saying "Liking a game past its flaws is still good" and the actual flaws with the game the see as an oversight because the enjoy the game on a fundamental level, yet TTYD can't be enjoyed or liked past its flaws? "I've seen many comments go "Oh Color Splash is a good game, you can't say its not" every time someone states anything negative, which tells me because they find it a good game detractors aren't allowed to think otherwise. I also hate how the try and use Color Splash's humor to validate against any form of criticism, despite the fact humor is in the same league as music in which its ENTIRELY subjective and totally based on fan perspective, you can't use self preference to validate something as a truth against criticism. Yes Color Splash does have some entertaining and fun moments that are even laugh out loud worthy. I give it credit in that regard, but the humor isn't for everyone and is entirely subjective. Super Paper Mario fans are overly defensive and use the game's story (which is the of the series standards) as nothing more than a crutch to place the game on a high point of view, rather than view the story as a legitimate positive outcome from the other games. As anytime someone has any problems with the game on a level design or gameplay level (which is does and are the game's single greatest flaws and don't relate to the story at all) they instantly turn defense and use out of character claims that the game is underrated (even though its more praised than hated by a general POV) and you are not allowed to hate the game because of the story's quality, this basically means you aren't allowed to criticize a game for its level design or gameplay (two important aspects of a game's structure along with story) simply because the story is good. By this logic they are encouraging them to make games stagnate as long as it has something good even though they bashed other game's of the same light for not focusing on being original), it never seems to be on any side unless used as a crutch. I don't like Sticker Star or Color Splash, but I hold not personal vendetta against anyone who chooses to like them for what they consider each one does right, because everyone has their own style and preference, I just don't like the fanbase of each game who go around with a ridged mindset. Not every fan is entirely as I've stated, but there seems to be an increase of more who do it, than those who don't.

what's wrong with laying the doors next to each other? it's convenient and makes sense. the complaint is what I would call stupid the citizens look...different then what you would usually expect but it wasn't bad the beginning part wasn't boring if you ask me it was fun but pretty tame at first. puzzle wise? it's not just 3d there are 2d ones to and the 3d ones aren't always that obvious if you ask me. I don't think it's fair to compare the "item" pixels to partners since they really weren't meant to be. you should be comparing the actual playable characters and tippi to them if anything. tippi does have a personality she acts rather reserved which once you learn more about her it all makes sense. how is she any different then say...goombella? except with tippi she had a pretty big plottwist peach being playable wasn't bad and was still good. but with everyone having there own ability? I found to be pretty cool. I guess you dislike the others having there own unique abilities to then? just because the pixels exist doesn't mean the game doesn't have the best story eh....the hamster wheel was more so around 6 minutes but your right it was dumb. but it wasn't THAT bad so if that was the worst part of the game? guess the game wasn't that bad then I remember that freaking blooper fight using bowser...I never used the ground pound pixel cause I never thought of it. but boy was that fight annoying. yeah the overall game IS easy but it does sometimes get hard and the gameplay is still good I would say and solid "and argue about it like a asshole" so like...either ranting and being very angry over something as simple as a video game? or painting a game's defenders as people who can't take others opinions and get butthurt over it? as you've proven not every solution involves flipping dimensions even though you say it does true backtracking to the craig village wasn't intuiative at all. honestly? the second password part was kind of funny in a typical paper mario way if that makes sense. It was fun too but it was kind of tedious. why does it seem like the cragnon and floro sapiens never talk to each other? to me it seemed like they would at that point as a "new beginning" also how did the floro sapiens commit genocide? they brain washed but not commit genocide chapter 6 was a cool "enemy rush" chapter it reminds of the ones from wind waker and twilight princess really especially post game. how would the reveal of count bleck being blumiere not benefit the story? I would say it does honestly? going through the ruined sammer kingdom for like 2 minutes? is VERY ominious and creepy and it gives you time to think and process what just happened and I LOVE it eh....it seemed to be explained that the power of count bleck's minions loyalty was the reason the pure hearts got there power back so yeah overall fine game. the platforming felt different then the normal 2d mario games but it wasn't bad by any means or boring or repetitve as a platformer a waste of time is what you call the count bleck and tippi plotline? you say we hardly know anything timpani and blumiere? we do know there pasts involving each other and even why they split in the first place and that count bleck's father may have been kind of evil or his whole family is. the game did try and succeeds at making you care with how it was all set up. I did care for these characters to a extent even if I was spoiled by the plot before even playing this game no personality of count bleck and tippi huh? like I said tippi was pretty well mannered and kind which made sense as she was a true lady and was in love with someone as dapper as count bleck. count bleck was more so gloomy and the ONLY mario villian who can be considered a "tragic villian" which is what makes him unique and it actually seemed like he was pretty nice before he lost timpani aswell so yeah they DO have personality again we know a bit more then just them being "star crossed lovers" people can do crazy things when there heart broken if someone like bleck can do what he did? he'll do it seeing timpani had him see the error of his ways and if he was selfish he wouldn't literally SACRIFICE himself how does TTYD's love plotline accomplish more? also with super it was meant to be paced out longer and slower with drops of information the plot also has some other interesting stuff like luvbi's whole family thing and her sacrifice. and just dimentio as a whole. francis was pretty funny and the cragnons and floro sapiens coming together? that was interesting to. the "moment to moment" gameplay isn't garbage it's unique and well executed if anything. would I replay? eh maybe....I don't replay games often though so yeah the game isn't stupid and it's not pointless and wasted potential? eh it could have been a great rpg I admit but it was a interesting experiment that worked well really.
