Nice informative video. I'm a tropical youtube fisherman (most of the time), but I can always learn from any style of fishing. Interesting holding the line on your retrieve.
Hey John, those Guppy's are a lot more effective if you slow the rod pumping way down. Although they will still produce fish if you use the standard pencil popper retrieve, they aren't really meant to be fished that way. I like to use the flat 2 3/8 oz in heavy current while slowly twitching the Rod on a very slow retrieve. If the current is strong enough you can just leave the lure out there for a while as you slowly work the rod. This method may sound odd but give it a try some time and I bet it will surprise you!
Enjoy your fishing videos, you efficiently demonstrate your techniques, I watch a lot of fishing videos, you are tops at keeping my attention, thank you, for the great tips.
John, I just want to say thank you for your videos. They are entertaining and very educational. If I was in the East Coast I would be fishing for Stripers, but alas I am on the west coast. I would love to fish with you someday.
Amazing John! Thanks for sharing! A question: when we shaking the rod to make the plug dance, it's need to make a lot splash water or just a little bit? Thanks.
John, are you fishing in decemeber? or were these pre filmed videos? im just curious because i just got back from school and ive been itching to get out and try the cape cod canal but im pretty sure all the bass have left already. But i get second thoughts on all of this T shirt weather we've been having!
Several people have recommended to me that my fluoro leader should be a lighter test than my main line. I guess it's based on the concept if you need to break off due to a snag, the leader will let go first. You seem to do the opposite. Any insight into that? Abrasion resistance over worrying about losing some main line yardage?
Hi John, a bit off topic but I was wondering what settings you use for most of your videos, 720, 1080, 30/60 fps? And why do you prefer? I've been using 720/60 on 64g card. Would 1080/30 be better? I carry 3-4 extra batteries but I only go through 2 batteries and card is full with 720/60 setting. What do you think is the best compromise for recording time and picture quality? Thanks.
Another great video John. would you say that a spinning rod is essential for the action of this lure? Or would a high ratio baitcaster also do the trick?
hey john love your vidz. I live on the beach in long branch nj. I am always fishing the surf for fluke and stripers usually using bucktail or clams with the occasional pencil popper during a blitz. can you recommend a rod to pair with my penn clash that can work for all methods?
Hey, I've been watching your videos for a few months now u have great videos, I have a question right now at this time of the year would u be able to catch a flounder?
You mentioned packing your 6500ssv with blue grease at the beginning of the season. Do you mean you are packing the whole inside of the body cavity or are you just repacking the bearings?
I'm going to the beach soon and I wanna fish the surf , I have a duckett extra heavy rod with 50lb braid and a daiwa tatula 7.3.1 reel , do u think this is strong enough to fish with ?? As u can tell I'm normally a bass fishermen lol
Hey John I have a question I live in Long Island and do you know any shore fishing places for blue fish not the sound though because I never have any luck please help
Can you suggest any locations to go striper fishing around long island? I'm new to surf fishing for stripers and wanted to see if you can help, thanks!
Good luck with that buddy, I asked the same question and was told it was about the technique not the spot. Lol...im new to the areas also, but try Google Earth and search around Hortons point, whale rock, Mattituck inlets and if ya find a nice spot feal free to share it with your angler friends. We would love to hear about it. Peace. ; )
John, I notice in your videos you don’t wear any tape to protect your casting finger. Is this just from years of casting developing a callus, or is it the line you’re using? Thanks
@@JohnSkinnerFishing looks like I have a ways to go then. Tape is such a pain, I never get it to stay on. I can make it about 40-50 casts tapeless using plugs generally less than 2oz. Thanks for the reply!
I have a question on how u use the popper. I see in some of your videos u dont shake your rod and sometimes u do. Do u shake the rod when the current is calm so it rip the surface? I fish at Jones Beach and Robert Moses so the waves are big so i need your advice.
+Richard Wang You'll see that rod action anytime I'm using a pencil popper, such as this lure. The action differs with regular poppers, such as Super Strike Little Necks. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--MvE8ivI4Lw.html
what if im using a tsunami talking popper. Do u need to give them action or just cast and reel since the waves are big. In one of your video, u give it action since it was in calm condition. If it was rough condition do u just reel and cast. Im kind of new to this so i was wondering how do u know when to give it action when the wave is big and the type of popper your using
+Peter William No problem on mine, and when I opened it up at the end of the year there was no water and the grease was good. I did pack it well with the Penn blue grease at the start of the season.
+Peter William They are great reels but you cant beat the z series or older spinfishers they are less prone to failure because they are nuts and bolts reels check them out
I'll be up on the New York City in May, can you just catch a fish or two for me take back home in the south? Over a decade, I have no luck catching any stripers. 😩😞
How the fuck is John catching cows literally every cast. I fish the same spots(eastern north fork of Long Island) use the exact same plugs like those guppy pencils. Wetsuit out to rocks too and fish all the time. I only catch bluefish I just don't get it
Every cast I wish. I'd be happy with every 100 casts at the moment. This particular spot is a system. There are short windows of opportunities when the fish settle in there. It's getting more challenging to find these systems with less fish around to tell you you're on them. See you on the beach.
