Howdy Les, Rick Groat here, you don't know me but I wanted to just say how much I enjoy your films, and being an independent film maker myself I really appreciate your devotion to the art and your knowledge and expertise on both filming and wilderness survival, and you being the first to do it all is an amazing accomplishment. There are many who copy you but never reach your level of honesty and artistic excellence. I've learned a great deal from your films both in survival and film making. I have been making films since 1970, with my family owned Groat Family Productions, mostly western, won a few awards, and also an actor in western movies, and my live wild west show, Groat Family Wild West from 1964 with 5,550 live shows and actor in 70 films and tv and ongoing. Not bragging, only saying I've got a long history in film and the arts of films, photography, and acting, and when I see great presentations I can really appreciate it. I'm planning another film, and so I was inspired to say keep doing what you do, it's great. Rick Groat, GFP, GFWWS.

Les seems like a cool guy to hang out with. Now yes, there are a lot of survival teachers out there who might have 'more' experience in survival, might know 'better' ways of doing certain things, etc. But it also comes down to the demeanor of the person depicting it and even a lot of the 'experts' are sometimes quite gruff. Les seems more down-to-earth in his presentations and in general keeps it real as far as the situation and how a typical stranded person would think. He doesn't sugarcoat his videos and shows both the things that work out well and the things that don't work out as well as planned. I feel like a lot of the shows like Bear Grylls' Man vs Wild and others are prepped ahead of time to show things going as smoothly and quickly as possibly. They rarely show anything going wrong, which for even 'experts' in wilderness survival, doesn't make things a picnic. Some things like making a fire from scratch without any matches, flint striker, appropriate tools and having to rely on a fire bow are still difficult for even those who have made them for decades.

I have a neat raft story for you though continuing with your life rafts that fail. About ten years ago, I was an aircraft mechanic contracted to do major overhauls of Coast Guard C-130's. We did the every four year tear down, repair and put back together PSI phases. Those planes have four life raft sections and tubs build into the trailing section of the center wing. When you pull the release t-handle, a cable system pops open the locking mechanisms that hold the top doors down and also pulls the trigger system to start the canisters inflating the rafts. We had just rigged the system and were installing one of the rafts which are also very heavy to move around and they are housed in a soft-sided heavy duty vinyl bag. The bag uses velcro at key spots and seams to release the raft. We accidently set one off and it only inflated maybe a third of the way and stopped, well short of having the ability to be used. It was well within it's service life as it was just issued to us to install. That moment made me remember this episode and made me think of the terrifying scenario. Let's say you actually survive the emergency water landing, pull the release handles, climb the canvas strap and aluminum bar ladder, pop the hatch and climb to the top only to find your raft has failed and is unusable. These planes can fit four rafts and at the minimum carry two, but lets say that part of the system was damaged and that one raft was your only hope. As you are famous for saying, it was spooky. I wasn't happy that we accidently set it off, but it was a little redemption that it was a bad one that we got out of service. This episode is one of my very favorites as the every changing ocean can go from calm to calamity so quick compared to most land scenarios. Thank you for telling us the back stories. Cheers.

The fact that you take the time to break down these episodes in your own free time really shows how you care about us fans. Truly an admirable person you are Les.

I remember when this episode came out.. as I had read Dougal Robertson and family's story "Survive the Savage Sea" in the 80s (still have my copy of the book!). Thank you for your diligence in ensuring your safety as much as possible with the chase boat and knowing when to call it off because you are doing a JOB. Cheers from BC! ps.. yes, all 6 of the family and friends in that experience survived, iirc 72 days at sea... half of which was with all of them in the 10 foot tender (rowboat) after their raft completely failed! Another great read is "Saved!" - the story of solo sailor Tony Bullimore when his race boat lost its keel in 1996 and the 5 days he survived in the overturned vessel until the Australian Navy found him and rescued him.

Les....I learned a great deal from your show...small things, and things that I've used. My son and I used to watch your show together all the time when he was young. Many thanks for your integrity, and showmanship.

“Mandles, no fashion sense whatsoever” 😂 Les, it’s not like we expect you to be in Birkenstocks while out surviving lol (Although, I suppose being stuck in ordinary clothes would end up being the typical situation in real survival scenario)

The stories of shark attacks from the media aren’t what makes me terrified of being attacked if ever in a ship wreck. It’s reading the accounts of the survivors from the USS Indianapolis. Then thinking about how many times that must have happened throughout history but nobody made it home to tell the tale.

Les I'm sure you'll probably never see this, but in the off chance you do, I just want to thank you for uploading your work so that we can enjoy it! I've been going through a rough patch, and your channel has dug up some of my most fondest memories of my adolescents. And suddenly the world doesn't seem so grey anymore. Again.... Thank you very much!

Just letting you know that my time since leaving the military after a decade. Have been made easier to since reconnecting with the Survivorman series. These commentaries refreshed my inner survivor. Its a skill that built my inner willingness to live on through the traumatic experiences . Sadly not many other veterans are so fortunate. So thank you for the memories and education you gave me.
