Old school documentarians that had the good sense to keep the rights to their shows are hitting a gold mine right now. The amount of old school things that would do so well on a platform like RU-vid, but are locked in the vaults of discovery or nat geo is bloody heart breaking.
I remember back in the day (at least here in europe) when Discovery channel(s) were good (there were discovery history, science etc) I remember that when ever Survivor man was on, I had to watch the episode. I remember Mythbusters and Survivorman were my favorites, watching reruns and everything.
SAME! I remember this episode from so so long ago. glad I finally found it while just beginning to binge the series. With all the struggles he's gone through on other episodes this is comfort watching at its finest. Wish I had some coconuts for a tv dinner to go along..
@@thenickbw SAMEE, when I rewatched that specific scene it unlocked a whole childhood memory that I rememebered when I used to watch these on discovery channel. I had no clue it was les strouds that i was watching when i was a kid
I have a 7 year old who only wants to watch 3 things, survivorman, steve1989, and camping with Steve. After finding survivorman on RU-vid it is his favorite thing to watch
Les, I doubt you’ll ever notice my comment, but I am so happy you’ve found RU-vid as a place to put your content. I’ve missed watching Survivorman so much!
This was the easiest survival week in the show. Shelter ready right off the bat, plenty of food (even caught a bird, which never happens), no problems with water, easy fire going, no bugs or snakes to worry about. If wasn't for the rain, it'd probably be like a vacation.
@@redacted4141 I think it's genuinely just the stuff that was left in a shitty old boat they bought, Les has shown nothing but integrity and honestly throughout his filmmaking career, I trust that he wasn't cheating but instead just making use of the things he happened to have
I always thought that was the shows one weakness. He never really finds anything to eat, so the secret to surviving is to learn to deal with not eating.
It may be hard to realize but it actually is really hard to get meat in survival situations. Imagine trying to get a fish without a net or a fishing rod and a constant supply of good bait. Every time he manages to catch something large I’m astounded because I know just how hard it can be. We don’t see him catch meat many times because he doesn’t fake the production and stick a dead rabbit or fish into his spear when not filming
@@danieltorrejon4303 right, it’s mostly about bugs when you’re in a survival situation. That juicy protein really helps keep you going. Forage bugs and keep getting water and you can survive a while.
@@danieltorrejon4303 Les has also talked in director's commentaries about the difficulty of hunting and filming at the same time. All of the moving around to set up cameras, talking to the camera, etc. basically alerts everything in the area to his presence. And, if he were to hunt without filming it and suddenly show up onscreen with meat, people would probably call it fake.
Les is a real badass and runs a true survivor show. Not having a camera crew and having to film all on his own is hardcore enough. He also makes the show look very realistic instead of other survivor shows that feature the guy doing crazy dangerous stunts for the sake of the wow factor on camera. Les doesnt have time for that. He focuses on actual priorities in survival. This episode is my favorite. By far the most ideal place to survive of all the episodes ive seen. And that feast at the end looked absolutely amazing. Makes me wanna go to the South Pacific and camp out on an island there.
@@JoeFarrier-ft3hy it's ok buddy. Tell you're momma to tuck you in extra tonight. As you are obviously 12 years old at best. If not physically, mentally.
I had a snorkeling boat leave me about an hour off the coast of Mexico on a reef. Fortunately they turned around after about half an hour. Not fun. When I finally saw the boat again I pissed myself in relief. Totally uncontrollable and I'm sure I'd have shat myself too if I hadn't before we left. I thought I was dead. And not just dead but that I'd endure physical and mental torture before death. Of course the mental had set in immediately upon raising my head and realizing the boat was leaving me. The Magnum PI episode where he was lost at sea really screwed me up as a kid. It took me a long time to get over my fear of the ocean. And then that happened. Haven't been back in the ocean 25 years later.
What I really love about this episode is that you show us all the different ways to survive, even having a feast of sorts, but you don't take more than you need. You showed us how to handle a booby, and it served its purpose of educating us and feeding you. Later in the week, you know you will be going home soon, so you don't try to take another. I love how you show respect for nature.
This is 100% because its a TV Show and like you said, he knows hes going home. If it was actually a situation where youre stuck out there and dunno if youll be getting home, you will be taking everything you can, when you can.
It wasn't just a 7 day fasting experience in the woods like the other episodes.. It just goes to show, even a guy who's as knowledgeable as Les is still in big trouble if he doesn't have the right preparation.
This is the best episode. So many times Les is struggling to survive. But in this he's very comfortable and it a pleasure to watch. By far my favorite! Never understood why the rain catch is so far away. It should be in the boat. I truly miss Survivorman!
Kind of bothered me when he started suddenly pulling all kinds of items out of the ether as well, things that weren't on his initial list. Make me wonder what else was with him.
@@MrBottlecapBill what items exactly? In this case every item. He had was an obvious item any diver would have , ie knife survival kit/first aid , dive bag, the only item is the obvious gag he did at the end with the instrument
This is hands down my favorite episode of all time. It's just nice to see things go well for you generally. That feast at the end is my most favorite memory of watching this show, just a feel good ending.
I really like the ending music Les plays on this episode. It seems like the perfect tune to play on a tropical island. Good thing Les "made" such a great new instrument, but skills like those are why he is the Survivorman.
I used to stay up late with my little brother watching this on the weekends when our parents would take my sisters out of town to ride their horses. They always left us behind so we watched this show all the time!
Most likely my favorite episode, theres another one two part where Less camps in a cabin in the mountains and hikes down. I was 11 years old when i started watching this program with another friend of mine in Ontario. later on in life it pulled me out of a large depression. I dont even have the words to be able to express what i feel. Thank you.
"Can't change tapes" Wow how the times have changed! Les I've been a huge fan of this show FOREVER. It was one of my favorites to watch every week and now i can binge watch. Thank you for posting these! This particular episode is one of my favorites!
@@lesleyj.stroud1713 Thanks for the reply! Such an honor...been a fan for years and happy to binge these episodes...love the educational life skills and inspired to get into the wild and enjoy nature in turbulent times...I got the Mawson's Will book and looking forward getting to the end! Thanks again! Looking forward to 2021 and your new stuff!
@@lesleyj.stroud1713 Strange can be good! In a world where "normal" doesn't seem to exist. I've watched all your seasons, including extras, and set my reminder for Canoe Camping, looking forward to it! You have a gift and appreciate your content. Thanks for the reply...you're the best!
I have so many fond memories of this show. I think my favorite is the controversy after baer grills was exposed for sleeping in hotels during his shoots. Really showed how tough and genuine les is
This was one of my favorite episodes as a kid just from the location and his massive feast at the end. So much nostalgia when he started night fishing!!!
I agree 💯 on that! This is the best survival show/series. Also, there's many comments saying "this is my favorite episode as a kid" that are making this 50 year old feel like he needs to be in the rest home, haha!! But seriously, this episode is one of my favorites along with the Baffin Island and Labrador ones!
The additional footage was in the original airing on Discovery, but I think they cut those scenes out of the reruns to shorten the run time when they moved to Science channel.
@@lesleyj.stroud1713 you really made a new account just to make these comments acting like you are him? Im pretty sure les wouldnt have create an account only 5 days ago.
@BadDriversOfTennessee in reruns yes they do. The premieres generally have all of the footage together. Perfect example is in the Kalahari episode. The scene where Les discusses the importance of staying hydrated was in the original premiere (I saw it at the time), but was cut down in later reruns (likely for Science Channel syndication).
Les you’re my childhood hero. All these years later I’m still watching everything you’ve given us. The adventures you meticulously filmed for us while surviving bare-bones, will stay with all of your countless fans for the rest of our lives.
Being age 50, I'm *way* too old for him to be a childhood hero but his shows have been the best survival shows of any that exist. I'm still watching them now over 15 years later on You Tube. They never get old!
We love you ❤️ thanks for uploading.. the best nostalgia. I didn’t remember or realize how much I loved you as a kid. It made me smile seeing you cut the shirt because I know you said it stupid in retrospect. Cute crop top though.
This episode, along with the one he did in the Outback , are my favorite episodes. He was literally enjoying his self on this one and in the Outback, he was making those grubs look like sausage links.
“Buckets, not much I can use these for” *10 seconds later* “It’s important to know that you can use anything in a survival situation, nothing is too insignificant.”
The south Pacific has always been my dream place to explore. It must've been a hell of a theater of war to fight in also. All the secret and undiscovered war relics and places that still exist would be fascinating to explore. It's a beautiful yet scary place.
Never thought I'd be so stuck and down out that a survivorman episode would make me hungry. Just living on water for days really does something to the mind as well as the body
My wife and I always recreate your reaction to when you taste the food you get. "Oh man is that good!" Everything you find sounds like its the best food you ever ate. Love the show since day one!
Yes, you are right. Perhaps it's because he has gone such a long time without eating. The only time I remember that he was disgusted by the taste of something was when he was in Papua New Guinea.
From one Ontario man to another les Stroud you have blessed my childhood with great shows and now I get to relive them all on RU-vid thank you, you started my love for survival!!!
🤣😂😂 Boss, man, I got to take you serious throughout these videos bro, I can't stop looking at that shirt that shit has me dying, my utmost respect sir I'm just saying!! You're still a legend in my book!!!
The ending of this episode and the Arctic Tundra episode never fail to make me hungry! Thank you so much for putting this show on RU-vid, I was obsessed with it as a kid and it’s awesome to be able to binge it years later :)
I noticed the the bone necklace around Les' neck. I'm guessing it was a gift from the survival expert that helped Les before making this episode, from one survival expert to another. As well as to bring good fortune during the seven days having to survive. I can only imagine how surreal it must feel to be alone and documenting each survival experience, especially this one. I'd love to see a directors commentary on this particular episode.
Always loved your videos Les, have been watching over 10 years. I’m sure people will continue watching you 100 years into the future. We can’t lose these skills.
The Cook Islands are basically one of the best places to get stranded. The rats are edible, plenty of coconuts, no predators, plenty of rain so a lot of fresh water, not too hot or cold, a lot of fish, a lot of birds, a lot of wood, etc.
