Suzuki V-Strom 1050 Full Review: OnRoad, OffRoad, Tech, Love & Hate
The V-Strom is a legend in the ADV community, serving riders since 2002. Updated in 2014, and again for 2020 with the 1050, 1050XT and 1050XT Adventure models, does it stay true to the V-Strom mentality - a tough, reliable, comfortable all around bike? To find out, Suzuki lent me one for three weeks, and I've put it through its paces!
We delve in to the bikes features, tech, take it off roading, carve some twisties, talk about what I love and what I hate, and how it compares to other bikes in the category. Get your favorite drink and some popcorn, we are going all the way with this review.

As the owner of a 2023 Vstrom 1050 who does his own valve adjustments, I can assure you it does not have gear driven cams. There is a cam chain for each cylinder that runs up to an idler gear in the head. The idler gear drives the dual overhead cams yes, but I would not classify it as a gear drive cam system, like the VFR you mentioned has. It is the idler gear you are hearing. The idler gear greatly simplifies valve adjustments though, as the cam chain remains timed and tensioned as you remove the cams to access the shims, which is very different than the SV650 system.

Appreciate the thorough review. I sold my Africa Twin and now have a 2018 Vstrom. I am one of the many who had visions of taking a big bike offroad, but the reality is that riding a 500 lb offroad requires more skill and effort than I have, and I didn't like the on road performance of the AT due to the big front wheel and the soft and long suspension travel. The Strom is fun to ride and is a solid all arounder at a good price.

I agree about the AT - as a former mx racer/hare scrambler, the AT is way to massive for off road fun. Good luck picking it up if you fall over in a rutted uphill.....I'd never get anything bigger than 800cc for even casual cow trailing - many of you already know this, so I'll shut up now.

Great review, thanks a lot. Really helpful. I’m not an expert, but would just comment on the last few minutes. I think bikes with 17’, 19’ and 21’ are just so different that should never be compared. Even the long standing comparison of GS1250 with AT doesnt make sense to me. It should be compared to 19’ front wheel CrossTourer. The fact that it is compared to top end AT in my view is a sign that even brands and experts go too much for branding / looks / marketing, than actual reality. AT will never go on twisties like old Varadero. I wish Honda would do a Varadero 1100/1200/1300, and will have a go at this Suzuki.

Had my 1050XT for 15 months now and it's possibly the best bike I have had since my TLR. Came from a GSA and a Tiger 800 and would never go back to those bikes. Running cost are less and quality is great. I don't use these bikes for off road I prefer 250's for that. As a road bike it's awesome.

This V-Strom to me is second only to the Super Tenere. I’m a 60 year old disabled veteran and the off-roading I do is limited to fire roads and the roads in Latin America/ Mexico so these have become my modern day UJM after 30 years of riding Harley’s. I’m currently on a ‘21 T7 but gonna have to go big bore because the T7 just isn’t comfy enough with my wife and I both on it. I’ll either be moving to a Super Tenere or this V-Strom 1050, it just depends on which I can get the better deal on. With today’s crappy to dangerous road conditions I just love the way these bikes just eat up the crummy pavement! Great review Man, keep ‘em coming!

Just like most adventure bike riders pay a shed load of money for say a R1200GS for the 'image' and never leave the tarmac, the same is true for most 4x4 SUV etc... The engine of the V strom, both 650 and 1050 is a dream, punchy, smooth at all revs, and bulletproof.... and did I mention that 'proper' V twin sound..

I have ridden some adventure bikes recently, and to be honest I was really surprised by the 1050 V Strom. Most of the influencers, youtubers, journalists etc mention value as the argument for the V Strom. I would definitely choose the V Strom over an e.g. Africa Twin because it handles nicer on the street and that's where those bikes are used 90% of the time. With its handling and motor characteristic this bike is really fun to ride and that's exactly what I am looking for when I ride a bike.

That was a very fair and balanced review, sir. Thank you for creating it. Everyone I personally know, who owns a Triumph or Beemer adventure bike, almost never takes their bike off road. They must have visions of riding along with Ewan and Charlie from Long Way Round as they ride their bikes on asphalt. The V-Strom is the perfect bike for the gentleman adventure rider who has no need to pretend that they take their bike off road. Thanks again.

You do have the best V Strom 1050 review on youtube. At least from the ones i 've seen. Very informative and comprehensive, makes me wonder how many actually weight in "what ride they 're really after" before buying a new motorcycle vs other things, like the style the looks and "potential features that they might need" (and never do!). I like your no bullshit approach on the matter, you 're really on a mission to provide good info and feedback to potential customers and bike enthusiasts so thanks for this review! Also for putting my favorite greek youtuber as V Strom's reliability reference! He is the other side of the moon in the market (kokkina feggaria actually translates as "red moon(s)") but i usually enjoy watching his content for completely different reasons!

I just put a deposit down on a 2022 V-Strom 1050XT Adventure. You laid out the reasons I decided to purchase one. It will see very limited off-road time and will be more of a touring bike. If I need to go off road in challenging terrain, I have a highly modified 2020 DR650 for that. Once I get the new bike, I am going to point others who watch my channel to this review. Your comment that most adventure bike riders never go off road is so true. With that in mind the Suzuki does seem to be a great street touring bike, and great value. Love the review. And I actually love the looks of the new gen bikes. I have the 2018 and it’s my touring all day riding bike that I can also take down dirt roads. Most people get these adv bikes for their comfort and they never go off road. I love that I can always count on my VStrom to never let me down or not be available because some repair has to be done. It’s very sporty on the road and after some time with it you don’t think of it as bland at all. Why pay more for a bike that may be more of a compromise when you can have two bikes for the same money and take the right one for the job. I love my WR250R for short in town rides, back roads exploring, and single track trail riding. If I need to take a passenger or am doing all day riding, I am so happy on my VStrom. And for the price of two used bikes, I would not even be able to pay for an Africa Twin, yet I have two ultra reliable and fun bikes that cover a very wide range of riding in a very capable way.

I just found this rewiew, and it is great!! What I especially appreciated was your comment about the torque. I compare what you said about this with my Honda Varadero - It is not so important to always have the right gear on my present bike since it has enough torque anyway. If it is a gear or two too high, you just give it a little gas and it just goes... My impression from what I've heard in other rewiews is that this 1050-engineis retuned and needs more revs, and that it lost some low end torque. Now you say it still have enough. I'm very happy to hear that, and the bike is back on my radar for a test drive. Thank you!

I only recently discovered your page, but I'm glad that I did, because your content is just as you described at the end of this video; educational, informative, thorough & detailed. Your delivery is also fluent, fluid & logical which, at 72, keeps my attention & focus. I've been a "biker" from the start of my legal driving career & my first official registered vehicle was a Honda 150 Dream, before I ever had a car. I may have mentioned in earlier vids that I've had six bikes registered & on the road simultaneously; 2001 GL1800, Triumph Rocket III Classic, Suzuki GSF1250/S, Kawasaki 650 Versys, KLR650 & Honda PS250 Big Ruckus scooter. I got fed up with paying the annual fees including; insurance company, Registry, local Excise Tax, State Inspection, fluid changes & maintenance, etc. These days my two remaining rides are; the Bandit for my "Sport Touring bike & the Triumph Bonneville Bobber 1200cc high torque for my hot, sticky weather "hooligan" bike. While I do miss those other bikes for their unique individual personalities which always had me giggling inside my helmet, I haven't had any complaints so far with having two 1200's in the stable.

Yep. That was in fact a great review that i happned to watch all the way through. Complete and very objective. I think you managed to point out the most important details that would help someone interested on this bike, without always pointing out a better bike in every explained aspect. I think many people don't really get the Vstrom and are more attracted by specs and power. As a 1k owner for 12 years now, and many cross coutry kms done fully loaded, all i can say is that this bike is just so maintenance free, that it gets boring :) It's just there. It always works. I would not be surprised if this bike would one-day be voted the most reliable bike of all time....

Another excellent review Ian. You put a lot of time into this. I have an 08 V-Strom 100 and love it. Like you said, that V twin (or L twin) is outstanding! Not only is it torquey but it will happily pull and run to the redline all day. It never feels stressed. 105 HP might not seems like a lot but the power is always there. And it is as reliable as an anvil. The entire bike is. When I bought mine, I also looked at sport touring bikes like the FJR and Concours, but I'm now convinced that this bike is better at touring than those AND has the benefit of being able to explore dirt roads. And the suspension is much better at soaking up the beat-up asphalt roads we have here in New England. Sport tourers have to slow down for lumps and pot holes. Not the V-Strom though.

I often joke that the Vstrom is the perfect street bike for our crumbling roads - especially here in Michigan where our roads are continually exposed to freeze/thaw conditions rendering many roads essentially extremely hard packed two-tracks!

2014 Vstrom 1000 owner. I’ve got 32000 miles on mine and still love riding it everyday. I’ve got an Alaska trip on it, a Lake Superior Trip, an iron butt ride, and a Montana trip where we have sought out as much dirt and gravel as possible and it’s worked awesome. I’ve also probably pushed it a bit too far on the local off road trails, but it’s handled it admirably.

I have a 2014 big vee. Ultra reliable and you can actualy work on it yourself! Once you set up the ergo's to suit yourself, this bike is just brilliant. I have fitted Michellin Anakee Adventure tyres ((80-20), and it will handle dirt roads very well. Great review with an honest narration. Fully agree with all points mentioned regarding the Strom, both good and not so good. Well done mate. For taller riders, Givi have released an Airflow screen for the 1050. I have one on mine and they are just the best.

I got the base model last year and the only thing that could make me happier is more time to ride it. It has been rock solid so far. I never go off road, so that weakness doesn't bother me. Looking forward to many trouble free miles at an affordable price. It is a really fun bike as a daily commuter. My last bikes were cruisers. The extra HP and less weight really do make it a more enjoyable ride. I tested an FJR and Tracer 900GT as well as the super tenere and thought that this bike was everything I was asking for. I did like the other 2 bikes, but the Suzuki felt like a better all around bike

Wow! I like your review. It is very in detail. As a 2018 VStrom DL1000XT owner myself, you nailed everything at least in my opinion regarding this bike. All the while I'm a sportsbike rider since 1995 and VStrom is the first ADV I owned in 2020. Tarmac oriented capabilities and reliability are the key reasons why I chose VStrom. You might be wondering why I didn't buy the 1050XT when it was already available? Well... I was offered a very good deal on the outgoing 2018 model by the local AD. A price much cheaper than the 1050XT. As it was my first ADV purchase, I was being cautious not to invest too much money just in case I don't like it. However, my likings on ADV riding grows everytime I rode the VStrom. It will be great if I can upgrade into the 1050XT as I don't do serious off roads riding. Anyway, it is difficult to find sandy trail roads in Singapore.

Owning a 2014 Vstrom 1000, I had a similar experience with my bike. Its an absolute joy to ride through the twisties, and I liked it less off-road. The front steering feels very heavy, and I agree, it does not like soft patches of dirt, experience this twice with soft sand, and a soft bed of wood chips. No bueno.

I think the v-strom would do well to embrace what it is, rather than trying to market itself as a "master of adventure". Great review. I wish you'd have a segment at the end where you compare it to other bikes. Thats what were all trying to figure out anyway.

Really good, detailed review! I owned a 2016 from new and put nearly 30k miles on it. Pros were the fantastic engine, great riding position, fully adjustable suspension, quite good looks, decent brakes, reliability, relatively low weight, MPG, comfy seat and unflappable handling. Easily kept up with my friend's 2016 GSA. Niggles for me were few. Buffeting from the screen and mirrors (never solved this), was intense but you got used to it. Traction control and ABS were a bit crude, but manageable. Also didn’t like that it was like a big diesel (or sex 😂). By the time it started getting good (6000RPM) it was basically all over. Also the ride height was very low, and the oil filter a little too exposed even for light off-road. The main reason I sold it was build quality. It was a budget bike but sometimes really felt like it. Got fed up with the cheap, crappy fasteners, the rubber rather than braided brake lines, the rusty rear subframe, thin paint on the swingarm, naff thin and narrow handlebars, cheap metal components and flaking radiator. Mine lived in a garage, wasn’t used for daily commuting, was washed and cleaned every 500 miles or so and ACF50d after every wash. Overall I’d highly rate it. Would I have another? Probably not.

I have the '18 1000xt, it is the best bike I've ever owned. I chose it initially because in '99 I had a TL1000S, a few years later a TL1000R. I ran off to Ducati then BMW (K bikes) for a decade and had many great bikes, in fact the only bike I never really liked (purchased in Hemet CA I believe) was a 2005 Suzuki Bandit 1200s which was beyond boring. Man I miss 74 out of Palm Springs terribly. Big Rock you produce the most in depth reviews, thank you for the time and effort it takes. Subscribed.

Great review. I love the pragmatism of this bike. Also the intake honk is good, But as said, an exhaust is needed. The sound of gear driven valve train is great!, the reliability is like a hammer. AS a bonus you get rid of trash in the system because no chain guides are needed. The new UJM. I'm in, if my KTM 1090 gives up. :)

Great video, you explained it perfectly, real objective. I have a Vstrom 650 2021....and I am planning to upgrade to this 1050 Xt in December 2022. But I think I will wait for the new Gen of the 650. I think the 1050 is kind of expensive in the XT version, the ABS version is enough and it just lack the Cruise control...hope Suzuki can fix that for next year and the 1050 needs a quick shifter too.

This is a great and honest review. Well done. It is tough to compare the v-strom as it is a unique profile bike certainly road biased. Most of us do 98% road even if we have an adv bike and don’t want to admit. Real hard core all-terrain guys have a second lighter bike. Take care

I have a weestrom I can't seem to get rid of, I start shopping and nothing I see really beats it...bike before that was a SV650, before that Bandit 1200, before that a Suzuki GS1150e before that a 78 GS 750 so I been riding Suzuki's for a few minutes. Good bikes, fast, fun, reliable. You presented a well thought out and eloquently put summary of the bike we all know and love, Thank You

I have a 2014 DL1000A. Did intake, fueling and exhaust mods on it and it runs like a champ. It is sublime on the tarmac though far too heavy for any challenging off road terrain. Can really fly on well graded gravel. Much improved over the original one.

I absolutely like the depth and well sourced reviews you make. Obviously you (don’t know) probably do this for a living and quit your prior job. Keep at it Man. I had never owned one but had been following its evolution and I think it is an amazing and solid alternative for as you said, the 99% real adv riders out there that do not use this bike for competition Iberian Goat Rock and River crossings. In my mind getting a R1250GSA is as absurd if you are not into serious off roading as getting a heavy duty pickup truck to go to the mall. (Sorry for that Segway, we are talking about the V Strom!). The issue with the windshield is a big one for me. I had become spoiled with the motorized one I have on my R1150RTs.

I had a 2014 Vstrom. Loved the motor. It was a torque monster and perfect for the occasional dirt roads. It was perfect for sport touring on the road. I road my across the US a few times and it ate miles like there was no tomorrow. I’m a very tall person so it was comfortable. Had the tall seat with a aftermarket windscreen. Always had a major buffering issue with any screen. I had a Givi top box and with a duffel bag on the seat I was good to go. Gas mileage was poor. I would get between 32-40 mpg going down the road at 80 mph. Loved the engine. Sound was great. Perfect in this area. Headlight was good. For a $9000 out the door bike in 2015 it was a great unit. I ended up selling it as my wife never would ride with me and I wanted to get something that we both could do. Got into an trailer and we are enjoying our time with it. Would I get another? Yes but I would ride it without a windshield. No matter what setting or screen I tried it was a major problem with the buffering. In fact there was a time that I leaving Tulsa for Denver and the winds were so bad that I took the windscreen off and placed it under my duffel bad on the seat. It was much more comfortable without it. Great video! Thanks for the effort.

Good review on the 1000. IMO Suzuki has focused the V-Strom perfectly. The reality is that bikes of this weight and power are basically limited to very light off road environments and on road. This is not necessarily a bad thing as the large adventure bikes make excellent street bikes.

Hi Big Rock Moto, I like your reviews very much - and will continue watching. One thing of personal taste: I like the quick screw (??) for the wind shield very much. I find the solution practical and in comparison to electronic solutions you spare weight. The same goes for the rest of the electronic equipment. The new features make the bike reasonably heavier than the 2014 model. But I see the advantage of savety. I've heard complaints about the quick screw in other reviews, too. Is there anyone who agrees with me? Greetings from Germany -->

Your review of this bike is spot on. I have had mine for a year now and loving it still. It is heavy at 247 kgs and I need help to get it back up when i dropped it. I am an old codger at 64!. For me the most impressive electronic part is the Suzuki slow speed fuelling that you can go easily bumper to bumper traffic without having to blip the throttle. It is hard to stall the bike!

Very good review! I had a 2008 and I loved that bike despite its looks. It was arguably the best all around bike but this latest model looks really good. I especially liked the 80s style headlight which looks better than the previous model. If they could make the beak shorter or make the front end look more like Yamaha's Tracer 9GT, it'd be perfect. I am still enjoying my MG Stelvio at the moment but for my next bike, I am thinking either the Tracer 9gt or VStrom 1050.

Your reviews are some of the absolute best I've ever seen. I'm on my 4th Strom. Owned a 2012 650 and 2012 1000 and both great. Just bought a pair of 2021's being 650XT and 1050XT. The overall improvement in the entire Vstrom line the past few years is incredible. I'm a huge V-twin fan and the 650 is best all around bike I've ever owned. The 1050 is a brute...a real powerhouse. I installed a Givi AirFlow full windscreen assembly on both the 650 and 1050 and a huge improvement in comfort and quietness.
