Deere puts a lot of confidence in that snap ring....... Make for a bad day if it came out! I used to change out the 20 series. We would always drive the tractor nose down in the ditch so we wouldn't lose so much oil. Clean it good tractor and shaft then snatch one out and shove the other one in. Could do it in a few minutes.
I'm one who had never seen that done and was kind of intrigued at how it all works. You made it pretty easy to understand. Thank you. All tractors I've run have either not been able to switch out the PTO (to my limited knowledge) or had two different ones stacked one above the other. This seems a whole lot easier for someone to deal with.
Back in the day when New Hollands were Fords, the hub that the snap ring mounts into used to wear, the snap ring would pop out and your pto shaft would do a pretty snappy tillage job as it left the back of the tractor. I’ve seen some operators weld the ring onto the hub which was all fine and dandy until the shaft needed to be swapped out again!
When switching from 1000 to 540 install the snap ring in the grove on the 540 side of the shaft with the ears of the snap ring at the flat spot on the shaft then hold the snap ring compressed with a pliers while inserting the shaft into the tractor turn slightly till the shaft pops into place and release snap ring . The spring is really a spring loaded pin that shifts the gears in the tractor with switches the pto speed
on our massey 6455, it has two different shafts and you have to undo about a dozen bolts to take the pto shaft out but thankfully the only implement with a 1000 pto is our power harrow, and everything else is 540
I had a 2950 and a 4240. Switched shafts a good bit. Biggest pain was you would loose hydraulic fluid when you pulled it out. The only pieces of equipment that took 1000 shaft were the chopper and the generator.
I have never had a tractor that we had to switch shafts on. Our older ones had the dual shaft one above the other and the big tractors today either don't have one or only have the 1000.
I don’t mind changing the shaft on my 7800 - it is the same. It took me about two seasons of fighting it to figure out the slight wrist twist that makes it fall right in place. I hate the 4440 and 4020 because they puke oil everywhere and I always seem to panic and not be able to get it seated right because I’m worried about hurrying for that hydraulic running out. I do enjoy my 86 series IH for the dual PTO shafts. I’ve always wondered why Deere didn’t adopt that system. It sure is easy having both shafts ready and waiting for work.
Knowing that are old Ford is definitely not like that I can relate to your grandad not being keen on swapping them out as unless you stick the back end high enough up in the air on a slope you end up dumping all the old from the back axle and though I don't know what the JDs are like in ours the gears in the back end are mostly fixed though if things aren't perfect they can drop leaving you needing to take the cab off and splitting it to stick it back together hence deciding to choose the option of the 540 on a couple of machines so everything is kept the same though some say the 1000 can be easier to line up
We’ve only got one rig that needs a pto, a 3pt shredder, and of our 3 tractors only one of them has the wrong size pto for the shredder but we just run an adapter and haven’t had any issues that I can remember running it
we have two European tractors with that it's noce then the older way by Deere or the mx magnums but I still think ih's dual pto system is the best they both were there no swapping required
