Thanks for highlighting the issue of medical debt. Someone, somewhere does have to pay for medicine, but figuring out the actual reasonable cost sometimes feels impossible.

Thank you, Glaucomfleckens, for being advocates for patients. Our healthcare delivery system in this country is evil. To have people lose everything due to a health crisis is just wrong! Also, hospitals are being bought up by investment firms who then close hospitals that aren’t profitable. Baker City, in E. Oregon, are at risk of losing their hospital. They already closed their ICU and have either already closed, or will soon be closing, their labor and delivery department. That means pregnant women will now have to travel almost an hour to the nearest hospital to deliver.

I'm another person that wouldn't mind if my company goes out of business. I'm in IT for a company that provides certain financial services to hospitals, and it boggles me how much we're paid by hospitals for something that doesn't provide healthcare. Like, I get a salary that comes from revenue generated from hospitals. The actual financial product is something that is a benefit to patients, but only in the context of the current system and I wish it didn't have to exist at all.

My local hospital has you sign off on a financial agreement without knowing if docs are in-plan or not. I think that a bill should be passed that if a doctor has hospital priviledges, they MUST belong to all the major insurance companies. Not right to find out after that they aren't.

John Oliver would make an awesome guess! Also, The U.S. Surgeon General would be very interesting.

Yes the U.S. Surgeon General actually seems like quite a pleasant person. Saw him in another intreview before. It's very highly official though so it may be a tad nerve wrecking XD

I had an "erase medical debt" company pay my hospital bill when I was detained for 30 days involuntarily on a psych unit. Yes, you can be forced under judge's orders into a hospital and be billed for the...priviledge.

Just found out today that there was a charge when I blacked out and crashed into a parked car last December. The UK Traffic Act 1988 allows the first doctor/hospital to give emergency medical treatment is allowed to charge £21.30 per patient. There is also a charge of £0.40 per mile for transport to the treatment. I didn't know because all driving insurance covers it and the hospital charged the insurance company directly so I wasn't involved. Of course the follow treatment/investigations (still going on) were free to me.

I hope to be wrong but eventually there won't be a healthcare system as realistically majority of us will be homeless, poverty, unable to eat. I could see eventually a healthcare system that only treats the top 10% only

Fascinating and timely subject. For the record, Louisiana did, indeed, choose Medicaid Expansion, the only state in the deep South to do so, and we still have it. I shudder to think what it would be like if we didn't; 22% would probably sound good. I do wonder how much difference is made by the number of for-profit hospitals and the number of rural hospitals in any given state, and, of course, income demographics. We also have the highest car insurance rates in the country, but that's another story. I enjoy the channel and especially look forward to Kristen's spirited and intelligent commentary and questions on the Knock Knock series. 😊

No one ever receives refund for overpayment. Many seniors pay each "bill" as soon as it arrives, not understanding the complexities of the documents. (This would not be subterfuge, hmmm?)

I agree. I loved his funny content/skits. But I don't like these episodes/interviews. But they are making all their money off of THAT now and merch and stuff so he doesn't NEED to do the content that brought us to his channel to begin with it sucks. I see it time and time again with RU-vid channels that go viral. They begin posting less and less and instead just selling their merch full time instead. This guy travels for college commencement speeches and all kinds of other money-making endeavors. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even practice ophthalmology anymore. Prob making too much from this stuff and too busy from it, too. Gotta pay for all that plastic and filler and his wife's face. No offense, Doc.

@@technosloyalservant9349 I mean having a large focus on the problems in the healthcare system kind of proves that he DOES care… because he could make everything a joke or he could be funny but also address really important issues.
