Dear Dr Deshauer, i am 25 years old, a graduate of international relations and sustainable development, currently in the process of applying to medical school. You've been a big inspiration to me and your channel played a huge role in my decision to start the process of applying. This year will be my first try. I am waiting to see if i get an interview in September. Just wanted to thank you for sharing your unique journey.

I started following Dr. Siobhan after I realized she's practically my sister. I also was a professional violinist who went back for the sciences, only I became a pharmacist instead. :) I also loved organic chemistry so much I took extra classes for fun!

Great episode! I’m a musician/former music teacher (and cellist), but have always been super interested in all things medical, so I found Dr Siobhan’s story fascinating. And I literally listened to this podcast to and from my Appt with my Ophthalmologist (yeah, really!).

I think that you should name the pacemaker “Cardi G”. Like “Cardi B”, but with a G for your last name. Also, I’d love to see Jonathan in therapy. Does he win over the Dr with his helpfulness (thereby avoiding dealing with the obvious codependency and people pleasing, or will the Psychologist breakthrough to Jonathan’s inner child issues).

As a musician, I really enjoyed the random banter about what you guys play at the beginning of the video. As for what instrument to have your kids learn.. In general, piano is a fantastic instrument to learn because you can do so much with it, and if your kids want to study music in college they will probably need to be at least somewhat fluent with piano, even if it isn't their main instrument. But it's also good to have another less common instrument for them to specialize in. And depending on their age and what is available, giving them some options for that can be fun.

Wooo I love Violin MD! I was definitely one who requested her for a guest haha. Great convos & so interesting to hear the full story of how Siobhan made the switch to medicine. Her videos have taught me so much about the world of medicine. I especially love her series shadowing professionals from different but related fields, such as hospital pharmacists, speech-language therapists, pathology technicians and blood donation clinics. There are so many layers to medical support I didn’t know much about. I requested him before, but I’ll request again lol. I’d love to see Dr. Alok Kanojia aka HealthyGamerGG, a psychiatrist and RU-vidr/Twitch streamer. I **love** rheumatologists! I became a medical mystery (as in, the first time I ran down all my symptoms and experiences with my new GP, he leaned back on the counter in near dead silence for 2 minutes in confusion 😂). I am lucky to have an all-around great set of doctors but I owe so much of my current functionality to my rheum. I would probably be in bed nearly all day in pain without his help, and the reassurance and understanding of him, and all of the medical personnel in rheumatology that I've seen, has gone so far in calming me and improving my mental outlook on my circumstances. You picked a really awesome specialty, Dr. Deshaur, all is chronically ill patients and local medical mysteries rly appreciate you 💜

Thank you for this episode! My ophthalmologist and my rheumatologist work together to ensure my medications work well and don't create more problems for my eyesight. A great team! Also, those of us of a certain age will remember first hearing the name Siobhan from the 1980s US soap opera Ryan's Hope.

Finally got around to listen. Such a delight. Loved Dr. Siobhan Deshauer's stories and the medical mysteries. Can't believe you didn't "sing" Your heart will go on.... seriously. such a missed opportunity! Instruments for kids: Our music schools usually offer something like 'instrument carussel' were kids learn an instrument for 6 weeks and then switch so they can test out what's the right fit for them. I learned the violin starting 4 years old, my partner plays the piano and electrical guitar. Our kid.... had so many options. SO MANY. but he choose... drums. Everybody gives us condolences as soon as they hear this, but in all seriousness: listening violin practice is much worse and there are electrical drums now with headphones... *eyebrowwiggle*. Our kid has been doing this for two years and it already sounds so good. I deeply appreciate the love for music in general that regular music lessons ingrain. The discipline, the joy, the tangible improvement and pride in kiddo when he can play and read music he couldn't a few months ago. He loves asking for his current favorite songs on Alexa and then improvizes accompaniements that sound pretty impressive and sometimes are even on beat ; ) The way my kid approaches drums is very technical/mathematical and that 100% fits his personality. So this was a stellar choice by him. Biiiig recommendation for "technical/logical" kids (actually everybody who's just fond of rhythm and movement). I thought he'd transition to xylophone or marimba, but he's very happy with drums. His other choice was organ. But. well. Should start out with piano, but not enough keyboards on the piano for his taste.

Violin MD...I love how you look at the whole body in your field and how you ask the questions, like about why upping the protien in your diet resolved it. That knowledge could totally help a patient one day. Maybe a functional nutritionist could help you figure out why that worked🤔. Great interview, really enjoyed it.

when you were speaking about ann internist looking at the whole body I was reminded of the time ,as a pharmacist, I was dispensing an item from the most specialised specialist I had ever (and still) seen. The doctor was a 'right retinologist' (specialising in the retina of the right eye! I still find it hilarious.) Maybe Dr G would like to try that!

The three of you really cheered me up. If you are worried about of a 4 Yr old learning the violin why not start them on the cello. It will be a little less screechy😅

Related to Siobhan’s skin condition and the dietary component -> Changes in macro/micro nutrient content especially in deficiencies have been shown to modulate the skin microbiome which is most likely leading to your inflammation. Just an idea haha Can’t provide real recommendations since I’m not licensed yet.

Two doctor channels I like doing a get together, I can watch this. Also love the fact that a specialised doctor told her that her rash is a rash. That's just the thing happens to you when you go see a doctor so many times. You go tell them your throat is sore or your finger hurts, and they confirm "your throat is sore/finger hurts" after inspecting you, and you think to yourself "that's why I came here for your expert opinion". But it does mean a different thing to the doctor than you I assume. I was recently binging House and wondered how he always comes up with a hypothesis (and his subordinates also have 3 different hypothesis) and he just says "start the treatment" with whatever medicine. I thought that can't be how it works in real life, but this story confirms it, and now that I think about it, that's always what happens when you go see a doctor. You describe your symptoms and they give you medicine and tell you to come back if it doesn't go away. Doctors don't spend all day with tests to rule out that the most common explanation isn't happening for sure. Give your kids kazoo. And never have a good day again. Honestly though, I think people who practice such things as competitive sports or instrument have it quite good in terms of adapting to another profession. They have learned to rigorously train/learn and repeat and put effort in. And in the end that's all you need. These humding songs definitely were very loosely based on health. "You don't inject botox in people's eyes?" "Well I do sometimes, haven't done it in a while. It was a stupid phase and I don't find it fun anymore".

I played Violin for 6 years and my Sister does Classical Guitar! Both would be amazing instruments to get into. I've always wished I would have tried Cello or Stand up Base though.

My baby just got referred today to a front of the eye specialist. I had no clue that existed! We're just moving our way up the specialist chain.

Also a hospital pharmacist, who happens to work in Rheumatology…Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, Canada has an inpatient ophthalmology service- pool cleaner eye drops for weird eye infections, intravitreal syringes at 3 am … mostly retinal surgeries.

Piano is a great base for learning to read music and jump to other instruments. Or ukelele

There are multiple medical orchestras in the United States. There’s a violist/ pediatrician in mine whose husband played at a Nobel Peace prize presentation over Covid (He’s not a physician) and they are close friends with yo-yo ma. She (The physician) has written a book about the orchestra.

Sing. Your voice is your first instrument. You’re born with it. Singing is joyful. Singing connects the child to the world. As a child ages, piano is the best introduction to multiple voices. After that let the child choose.

Loved this. First for Violin MD, been working with Rheumo since 1983 when my wife first got diagnosed with lupus. Nothing but respect for all our Rheumo’s. Perhaps it is a specific protein that is connected to the rash. For Dr G. The sudden CA is terrifying. Have you considered (not a conspiracy nut) the Covid vaccine? Finally as regards ViolinMD’s rash, she actually got to do what is nearly impossible today (practice medicine) since everything is controlled by flowchart medicine and standards of care.

I'm a graduate from a school for the blonde and I don't know if you know that blind people make great music because they have to use their other senses. Take care. My BIL was diagnosed with RA but the treatment was not helping his arthritis then it was discovered the cause was Crohn's disease. Once he received the appropriate treatment he did better.

I didn't know what career I wanted, so in college I took the courses I thought I could pass-Music and Physics. Now I'm a radiation therapist who also plays the flute.
