Tabac Original was released by 4711-owners, Mäurer & Wirtz, in 1959. It’s a pedigree Eau de Cologne in that it was created in Stolberg, a nearby German town in the North Rhine-Westphalia region.

Composition:
A unique and surprising concoction, Tabac Original is a Floral Aldehyde rather than a conventional Aromatic or Oriental fragrance.
Head Notes:
- Bergamot
- Lime
- Jasmine
- Petitgrain
Heart Notes:
- Lavender
- Chamomile
- Carnation
- Pepper
Base Notes:
- Rose
- Sandalwood
- Vetiver
- Amber
The bursting citrus head is characteristic of classic eau de colognes. Notes of fatty petitgrain and jasmine lead to overtly floral heart. Depth is added here with peppers that retain a sense of conventional masculinity.
The base is composed of faint notes of oak followed by a sandalwood-vetiver accord, which draws out through a long amber finish.
The sensation is reminiscent of rose-scented tallow soap due to the strong presence of aldehydes. Therefore, it’s an unconventional masculine fragrance especially for the 1950s.

Nice to hear from you again, Ben, and glad you enjoyed it! Did I omit the "C" when I said it? Funny you should mention that, actually. "Tabac" is actually French for "tobacco" and the "C" is silent whereas the Germans write it "tabak". I should maybe have mentioned that during the video but then again, there isn't even a hint of tobacco notes in its composition!

I don’t believe it is. If you’re going for full authentic original language (German) pronunciation it would be said, phonetically, Ta-bak. Doing the Frenchy almost silent C, and the music, makes what could’ve been a top-notch review a little tedious.

I live this Cologne. It always reminds Me of a Barber Shop and Cleanliness. It smells how a Man should smell in my opinion. Nice review.

Tabac Original is a power house on the old school side of colognes. For me it's among the "big three" of classic men's fragrances, the other two being Old Spice and Sir Irisch Moos. I like and own them all although Tabac is my personal fav. I use the EdC and the deodorant stick which go very well together (I hate to mix up two different fragrances for AS/EdC and deodorant). A very nice side effect is all three are very cheap when you buy them in Germany (I got a source there). And especially Tabac Original makes me think that it could demand a much higher price - the 50ml EdC is like ten bucks which is a bargain for such a well balanced fragrance. And let's be honest: Tabac is just a manly, manly smell. That hits even harder today when the world of men's fragrances is full of fruity, weak, itsy-bitsy pussy products.

As a traditional wet shaver , I love Tabac shaving soap - it's a great performer. I sometimes pair it to the Tabac AS or Cologne but it gets some remarks of it smelling a little like an old man or nanna's handbag LOL. I quite like it though.

A complete and detailed review. The music, however, is a poor choice. Stylistically, it's in crass contrast to the visual presentation and detracts from an otherwise good review. Feels like stock music for a dated industrial film. Classical music might have been more appropriate.

It's very difficult to understand what you're saying with the unnecessary loud music playing. I hope you've fixed that since 2017. I wish you had compared the EDC to the EDT which are supposedly completely different scents.

Yes, our latest videos don't include any music at all! But we did have some balancing issues back in the day. Unfortunately, we didn't compare them but we can certainly revisit them in the future!

Hi Whippet, We've reviewed both but to be sure, I just tried them now to double check for you. I wouldn't say that they share the same scent. While there may be some minor similarities in the hearts they're overall very different fragrances. That said the packaging isn't too different! Best, CP

No worries! By the way, I'm at the base now and thought that I'd share my final thoughts. I suppose you could say that there is a slight similarity but maybe it's due to their period. The Tabac is considerably more floral while the Aramis heavier on the musk. Best, CP

Not at all! Both have similar structures and notes with the same mid-century feel about them as floral aldehydes. I think that it's a fair comparison to make.

@@Bespokeunit I am a sucker for anachronism. With that being said, I'm quite torn between Tabac, Ted Lapidus Pour Homme, and Puig's Quorum. They may be considered cheapies but there is just something about them that I find so satisfying. Thanks for the wonderful review! Oh - you just mentioned Old Spice and Brut as well. My lady is particularly fond of Brut as she says it reminds her of her late father, who by all accounts was a wonderful man. A pity that my father isn't one for fragrances. At 68 years old I only got him into wet shaving this year (can you believe it?)
