You need to move weight behind the rear axels in the trailer to lower the tongue weight.
@glampingwiththegoldbergs7754
Thank you for sharing this! Perhaps drop the hitch 1 hole on the Blue Ox and put rear suspension on high would help with distributing the weigh to front wheels. Also what noise are hearing from the trailer, wind, or rattle?
@AllElectricFamily
@AllElectricFamily Год назад
Unfortunately with the air suspension you can only adjust the whole vehicle. But, we are going to play with the set up and see what we can get figured out. The noise is the hitch noise…occasional squeaks and pops!

When I had a F150 with the 36-gallon extended fuel tank, it made a big difference if you weighed with a full tank vs an almost empty tank. With either of the Rivian vehicles, or with the F150 lightning, I guess it doesn't matter if you have a full or empty battery.

The issue with self leveling suspension is always going to cause grief when setting up a weight distribution hitch. You have to go by scales.... not eyeball it Measure ball height on both trucks with same settings, no trailer. Looks like the S sits higher at the ball than the T. You may need a lowering hitch. Not a biggie...easy fix. But it will take some playing and adjusting while at the scales so that you can re-weigh after changing hitches and adjusting the bars trying to keep the trailer level. The Revian will level itself regardless of the bars. The self leveling is a pain in the ass to get set up the first time with a new trailer.
@raybouchard6840
@raybouchard6840 Год назад
My guess is the ball height is part of the issue. Did you measure the ball height on the S and the T?

I’ve always found the best thing to do is to disable any air suspension, then adjust the hitch to bring the front wheels back to within 1/8 of an inch to the original starting position without the trailer. Then when you turn your air suspension back on, the air suspension won’t have to work very hard to raise the rear since it will already be raised by bringing the front back to level. It’s not about making the trailer and vehicle level, it’s about adding roughly the same or just a little less wait back to the steering axle. Just don’t add more than you started with. that’s why I always try to go back to 1/8 of an inch from start instead of 0, but 0 isn’t horrible, you just don’t want to over compensate. I had to setup my 21 Yukon, with air suspension and this was by far the best way to do it. So when I started the truck the air suspension hardly turned on. You should also disable any air suspension changes when towing. Adjusting any heights of the vehicle will change the amount of WDH impact you get.

@JordySpreader Год назад
You might need 1500lb bows for your blue ox. The heavy weight of the truck is an asset because it won't get pushed around by the trailer as they're about the same weight.

Did you say the tongue weight was over 1,000 lbs? My understanding is that the R1S hitch is only rated for 810 lbs of tongue weight. You also have to remember that 1,000 lbs counts against your "payload" on the R1S: The GVWR on the R1S is 8,532: If you weigh 7,320 when empty that only leaves you with 1,200 lbs of payload. If the tongue weight is 1,060 that leaves you with only 140 lbs of payload which is not even enough for a single adult. So an R1S full of kids and gear, plus your Airstream is definitely going to put you over your max GVWR for the R1S. The other issue I see here is while your calculated weight of 7,560 lbs is under your tow rating of 7,700 lbs: How much water did you have your fresh water tank? Was the fridge stocked the way it would normally be for a camping trip, had you packed clothes, food in the pantry, etc? Assuming you have a 50 gal fresh water tank: That would add 415 lbs right off the bat before you even start thinking about food/drinks in the fridge or pantry. Bottom line: It seems like you could very easily go over both the max GVWR and the max GCWR using the R1S to tow that particular Airstream. I would stick to using the R1T to tow that camper.

Pretty sure the payload on the R1S is over 1600lbs
@JeremyAkersInAustin

@@paulbram2You either didn't read, or didn't understand, what I wrote in my comment, or maybe you didn't watch the video where he actually weighs his R1S to find it's empty weight (Which is the only *correct* way to accurately determine your payload) Payload is, by definition, the GVWR minus "empty weight". Feel free to use Google and look up how to calculate payload if you don't believe me. The GVWR of the R1S is 8,532 lbs. He literally weighs his R1S in this video and shares the weight on the video. He weighed in "empty" at 7,320. (Maybe he had some stuff in the cargo area like charging cables and such so not 100% empty, but that's my point: Everything you have in the vehicle subtracts from your available payload) Now I know math may be hard, but let's see what we get when we take the max GVWR of 8,532 and subtract 7,320 from it: I get 1,212 lbs... what about you? The 1,600 lb "advertised" payload is an "up to": Meaning depending on how the vehicle is configured the payload can be "up to" something over 1,600 lbs. But as you add factory options to the vehicle, like larger battery packs, quad vs dual motors, upgraded wheels/tires, third row seats, off road packages, skid plates, etc. The added weight of these upgrades subtract away from the max available payload that you would get if you ordered the absolute minimum configuration.
@paulbram2
@paulbram2 9 месяцев назад
@@JeremyAkersInAustin chill dude. I understand math fine. I suspect he opted for the underbody protection / AT upgrade which dramatically cuts down payload. My R1S has over 1600lbs payload according to the sticker in my specific door jam. I get it, his curb weight is higher than mine. No, I haven't weighed mine yet. Were both of them sitting in it when they weighed it?

Thanks for the update. Does the Rivian R1S have a built-in brake controller? Also, what did you use for a brake controller when you were towing with your Tesla Model X?
@AllElectricFamily
@AllElectricFamily Год назад
The Rivian R1S & R1T have a built-in break controller. It's actually controlled with the steering wheel controls! We bought an aftermarket controller and installed it. If you look back in our videos we did talk about it...the wiring was weird, so that's our biggest word of caution!
@VWRalf
@VWRalf Год назад
Since the trailer isn't sitting the way it does on the R1T, you need to set up the hitch and equalizer bars for this vehicle. You need more weight transferred to the front. Also, one thing to look at is the tires. Since the R1T has a higher tow rating than the R1S, the load rating may be lower. My VW Touareg has the same 7700# tow rating with a 770# tongue weight limit. I had too much weight on the tongue and my rear tires started vibrating badly. Turns out the inner plys were coming apart. Luckily I was able to move a lot of weight inside my race trailer to make it back home.

Not wanting to be a that "guy"...but I would love to know your weight numbers for the rs and rt. Payload? Gvwr? Towing capacity? I see vehicles all the time that are over when we go camping and I have never seen payload numbers for instance on these rivians. Most vehicles run out of payload before they run out of towing capacity. I don't bring it up with people when I meet them on the road but it is sometimes very obvious when somebody is towing with an inadequate vehicle. Not saying that is happening here but it would be hard to buy a rivian without some idea on payload. Many youtubers including tfl never mention it on these rivian vehicles. Tfl did a video recently where they maxed out the r1s and I have a suspicion that they ran out of payload towing 5k due to tongue weight.

0:35 I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm a little confused about the premise. Why do you think the R1S could not pull the airstream as the R1T did? I am assuming the power delivered to the wheels is the same with the R1S as the R1T and the rated towing capacity should be extremely similar. So I'm confused.
@JeremyAkersInAustin
@JeremyAkersInAustin Год назад
The rated towing capacity is not "extremely similar" - The R1T is rated for 11,000 lbs while the R1S is only rated for 7,700 lbs. Power is not the primary factor when determining tow ratings: Safety is. And the R1T has a longer wheel base which gives it more stability when towing trailers which allows for more towing capacity. Their measurements at the scale puts their Airstream at 7,560 lbs, which is just 140 lbs shy of the R1S max tow rating of 7,700 lbs. And I suspect they didn't have a full tank of water which would have added over 400lbs of weight to the Airstream. They probably also didn't have it full stocked with food, clothing, and all the other stuff you'd normally pack into the RV for a trip.

What is the payload capacity of your R1S? Then how much payload do you have - Tongue weight, kids, dogs, gear and you 2?) I'm curious what the math says and if you exceed the payload capacity of the R1S.
@JeremyAkersInAustin
@JeremyAkersInAustin Год назад
The listed GVWR of the R1S is 8,532 lbs. Their "empty weight" (Not *entirely* empty because there was one adult in the vehicle, and maybe some other cargo) was 7,320 lbs. That leaves roughly 1,200 lbs for "payload". Since he said the tongue weight was 1,060 lbs, they would almost certainly exceed the GVWR when you add the remaining passengers, cargo, etc.
@bradleysargent9803
@bradleysargent9803 Год назад
@@JeremyAkersInAustin I looked up the payload capacity for the R1S and its 1,808 lbs. That is based on a curb weight of 5,842 lbs and the GVWR of 7,650 lbs. So they might have about 700 lbs to work with for payload, after the trailer is hooked up.
@JeremyAkersInAustin
@JeremyAkersInAustin Год назад
@@bradleysargent9803 No, they weighed the R1S empty in the video. According to the scale they weighed in at, their "curb weight" was 7,320, leaving only 1200 lbs of payload. The 1,800 number published online is an "up to" value based on configuring an R1S with as few options as possible, like dual motors instead of quad, smallest battery pack, etc. As far as I have seen none of the Rivians made to date have a curb weight of less than like 6,800 lbs because they haven't started making the smallest battery pack yet.

empty holding tanks. no kids and dog. no food in fridge. maybe even no clothes inside. you gotta figure your GCWR is at least 1000lbs, maybe 1500lbs more. what is the "axle" rating for the rear of the rivian ? not surprised the weight distributing hitch is not distributing; there is no conventional frame under the rivian, correct ? the rear suspension is soaking it all up.

I was wondering that myself. My wife and I have pretty good jobs, we live in a modest home, we don't take lavish vacations, we've owned our cars outright for quite some time, and there's no way we could afford just one of their vehicles much less and expensive hobby like RV'ing. So I live vicariously through the AEF. I almost put down a deposit on a Tesla back in 2011. At that time, the advertised price was only about $10,000 over the price of the vehicle that I had just purchased in 2009 (which I still have). But after running the numbers, even if we had sold the second car, that we owned out right, I realized we wouldn't be able to afford the financing and Insurance on the Tesla AND the 2009 Honda. My oldest will be finishing college this coming winter. My youngest child will be starting college in about 2 years and after their graduation, I will probably retire. So, unless I work until I'm about 70, I've given up my dream of ever owning an EV.
