This is a really good analogy. Like you could take this analogy out of a comedy routine, and it would be an effective way to explain bipolar treatments to people.

I was both a Kevin, and a person who needed arm floaties, just at different points in my life. If you are a Kevin, there is nothing wrong with making sure you don’t drown. I had to end several close and meaningful relationships (of which I don’t have many) because they kept using me to keep them afloat, and I could feel myself being shoved under. Later, I had to realize that just because I could swim in the shallow end, so to speak, didn’t mean I could go beyond where I couldn’t touch- and needed some floaties if I wanted to not drown. Still trying to figure out which ones I need, but until then, I’m staying out of the pool.

When I first sought treatment for major depression, one of the first tangible things I was told to do was avoid depressed, needy, crazy-making people (like me!). That depressed me even more because it’s really a roundabout way of saying that unwell people (like me!) are toxic and have a tendency to hold others down. That’s bad enough to consider, but they also, in effect, were actually advising me to find more people (like you!) who can endure the dead weight of emotional ball and chains (like me!). That’s a pretty toxic message for all involved! Now we have arm floaty meds, which help take the immediate burden off ourselves AND others. But I noticed several current motivational self improvement books still advise people that to be happy and successful it is imperative to steer clear of downer people at all costs. In whatever case, the message boils down to the fact that life is harsh and unfair; we gotta save ourselves whatever way we can.
@ashleighelizabeth5916

Been there and done that too. And I wasn't the best swimmer to begin with. I walked away from a relationship with somebody when I was young and had self doubts about it for years so when I was presented with a relationship where the other person kept wanting to try and make it work again even though it was toxic I kept getting sucked back in over and over again. I no longer feel terrible about being done with that one. I no longer feel terrible about not being in a relationship. I'm learning that I enjoy my own company more than I do that of the majority of people in this world. I'm busy working on trying to live my best life for me and not to fit into some box of perfect for somebody else.

@@carlodave9I think that's fear telling you that that is reality. But imo the truth is somewhat less cynical. We all have strengths and weaknesses. We all have more to offer in some places than others. If you are super low on ability to self-regulate, pouring energy into other people who are struggling to self-regulate is a bad idea. But if you are self-regulating well, it's not toxic at all to help a person struggling in that area but who has other things to offer that improve your life.
