I have the eton 750 (same as tecsun 2000) and enjoy eavesdropping on the world. I was a USN radioman during the 60's and these radios have better capabilities than those old recievers.
Interesting comparison video sir, just subbed to your channel. 😀 I have a Tecsun PL-990 (not 990x) and smaller models like the PL-660, 330, R-909 plus the two quintessential Sihuadon compacts - the D-808 and the R-108. I had a pocket-able Tecsun PL-310ET for a week but returned it as it had a serious flaw with its AGC circuit and listening to shortwave stations was an unpleasant experience (garbled, distorted audio on strong SW stations). I swapped it for the slightly more expensive Sihuadon R-108 which has none of the PL-310ET's AGC issues. In your opinion is the Tecsun S-2000 still a worthy purchase as a large receiver in 2022? There aren't much options for me as I live in Southeast Asia and buying a Grundig/Eton or a Sangean ATS-909X2 from Amazon US would be quite expensive due to shipping costs and Amazon imposed taxes. 😐 I've been purchasing my radios from a China based XHDATA online store and it only has the S-2000 and the H-501 (not H-501x). The S-8800 is only available as a domestic market model (Chinese characters on the buttons instead of English) and that's a deal breaker for me. I notice some similarities between the Tecsun PL-660 and the S-2000 thanks to your video. Both are pure dual conversion PLL synthesized receivers (non DSP), offer only a simple wide/narrow bandwidth and a VHF AM air band, with the S-2000 lacking AM synchronous detection. That leaves only the H-501 and the S-2000 as viable flagship options for me. Thanks for your input! 😀📻👍🏼
The 990 is no worse than the 990x, the abbreviation "X" is just a marketing ploy and nothing else. The S2000 reproduces SSB perfectly, this is its strong point, and the weakness is that the sound on AM is a little deaf, the narrow filter is too narrow, and the wide one is too wide and it lacks an intermediate filter. The H501 disappointed me completely, in the last video I showed how badly it copes with interference and how noisy it is.
@@wavezone2566 Thanks very much for the detailed reply, much appreciated! From my understanding, the PL-990x is programmed with slightly different tuning steps for medium wave to match the requirements of North and South American users. The 990x is also aimed at the mainly English speaking population, which explains the absence of Chinese characters printed at the back of the radio. The PL-990 on the other hand, is meant for domestic sales in China which is why the front sticker and the rear markings have text in Mandarin. Models like the S-8800 for China have only Chinese characters on the front panel while export versions have the button markings in English. The H-501/501x is a triple conversion superheterodyne receiver like the PL-990 and I think the third filter is DSP based (Si 4735 chip or similar). Have you noticed that receivers that run on the Silicon Labs' radio-on-a-chip tend to offer more than just basic wide/narrow bandwidth filters? XHDATA's D-808 for example has seven bandwidth filters, while Tecsun's inexpensive PL-310ET has five. The DSP chip itself may be generating internal noise and if the RFI shielding isn't doing a good job, that might explain why the H-501x was noisy. It could also be that the copy which you had purchased happened to be a lemon. I wasn't spared from getting a rotten apple either. The Tecsun PL-310ET which I purchased over a month ago had a hyperactive Automatic Gain Control which caused the audio volume to behave erratically. FM reception was excellent but on SW, speech was nearly unintelligible. It was a shame because the PL-310ET has a great build quality, with a sharp, high contrast LCD display, tactile feedback buttons and very good audio. Keep those videos coming in! 📻👍🏼
@@StratmanII I recently bought a pl680 and in addition to the problem with an incorrectly configured FM, I got an additional ass with the sync function, I posted a video about it recently. Before that, I had a pl660 that did not have such problems and it was also bought on Aliexpress. The quality of manufacture and configuration does not have constant control, because of this we get copies of receivers with different problems. This is because there is no competition in the market, tecsun is practically a monopolist.
@@StratmanII My pl680 was bought from radiwow. I didn't know that this company collects receivers, I thought it was just a store. The receiver looks perfect, and the FM was knocked down at 50 kHz, calibration helped, but the autoscan found the stations incorrectly and again with a shift of 50 kHz. I had to disassemble the receiver and manually adjust the contour. Only then did the autoscan fall into place and the sound became loud and juicy. But I was unable to fix the synchro detector defect. That's how they set up their receivers, then we have to reconfigure them))
@@crankshaftlover Yes, the PL-660 is a very good all-rounder portable shortwave radio. However, if you intend to buy only ONE world band radio, I would recommend the PL-680, which costs just a little bit more. The PL-680's buttons are easier to press and you also get a nicer artificial leather case for the radio, instead of the cheaper vinyl pouch for the PL-660. If you can spare the extra cash, go for the PL-680. However if you prefer the curvy, Grundig-esque shape of the PL-660, this model will also be fine. 🙂
Keep making those S2000 videos on SSB! Notice how the 4 Khz filter does not work on the PL-990 ? same on the 880, S8800 but it does work on the PL330 which sounds a lot better on SSB. The Audio quality of the S2000 is so much better. I think I'm going to get the S2000 again! :-)
In three months I managed to play enough with the S2000 and successfully sold it). Yes, I liked this receiver, but the sound on the AM was kind of deaf and old, because this model was designed back in 2000 and I always had the feeling that I bought some ancient device, bulky, clumsy and with the sound of the last century)). In general, I realized that I needed something smaller in size and more modern. I sold it and I don't regret it.
@@wavezone2566 I must watch more of your videos, hard sometimes to get time for everything including some radio fun but I really enjoy your channel and your comments! You are getting lots of radios, such an addictive hobby, don't think I've seen your 990x videos yet. What do you think of it ? I suppose the main attractions of the s2000 were the size and look and especially the sound quality on SSB. Sensitivity on the telescopic and internal LW/MW antenna is not so important for me because 99% of the time I use external antenna and if I remember correctly the S2000 worked well with external antenna on LW/MW but don't fully remember. More important to me is sound quality on SSB and a radio's ability to use external antenna without much overloading and in the end the difference is really small when using external antenna. I did enjoy using the S2000 though.
@@o00scorpion00o As for the external antennas, he has no equal, the input is at 50ohm, the input is at 500ohm, the input is for LW and MW. You can connect the wire along the baseboard in the apartment to the back entrance or connect it to the central heating. The choice is huge.
@@wavezone2566 yes S2000 does have good inputs for antenna, so too has the S8800 if I remember correctly, but very disappointed with the S8800 really bad audio with external antenna, these SSB issues are worse with higher signal from external antenna. I wonder when Eton will release the E1 refresh ?
I just got a hint from the XHDATA store manager that Tecsun will replace the S-2000 with a newer model, but she wouldn't tell me if it would be in 2022 or 2023 and she hasn't decided yet whether to bring in the replacement. 🤔For now it's still the same S-2000.
