Video log of a trip to Lower Paint Creek in Allamakee County on Monday, January 8, 2024. Paint Creek contains wild brown trout, as well as stocked and holdover rainbow trout.
On this day I was joined by my good friend Dre from the Rod & Rivet fly fishing shop in Decorah. At one point (at the 11:16 mark) he demonstrates the Oni Type-1 can be a big fish rod when placed in the proper hands.
We brought to hand 60+ rainbow trout in the 6 - 11 inch range, the majority within the first two hours of fishing. Almost all of them have been edited out of this video log for brevity.

Nice video, thanks for sharing! I’ve always enjoyed fishing Paint Creek, it doesn’t seem to get the traffic Little Paint does.

Thanks, glad you found value in it! Yes, I think the further you get away from the campgrounds on both creeks, the better.

I'm curious if you use "tenkara specific" flies or just common nymphs or soft hackles and whether they're weighted at all. Maybe you can name a few patterns you like. I'm a long-time fly fisher with conventional gear but a do own a couple tenkara rods. You're inspired me to give them more of a chance this coming season. Thanks for the great videos!

Thanks for your nice comment. I stick with a pretty small assortment of flies in keeping with the tenkara philosophy that presentation and technique outweigh attempts to “match the hatch.” For the last few years I almost exclusively used an unweighted #12 Utah Killer Bug, occasionally supplemented with a #14 BH black woolly bugger. This year I’ve experimented with UKB variants, some with hackle and/or BHs, mostly because I’ve been tying my own flies and wanted to try out my creations. The bottom line is that there are no rules and you can do whatever you enjoy best. Just keep in mind that some tenkara rods perform better with unweighted flies while others are optimized for contact nymphing. Either way, I’m convinced they’re the best tool for small creek fly fishing!

When you say "unweighted UKB" are you tying it without any copper or pink wire? Or maybe no bead or lead? Thanks!@@tenkaraintheiowadriftless
