That acceleration noise is addictive. Hard to pick up in the video but I knew what you meant as I have same car in my garage, only white on white. I've had my M3SRP for just over a month now and still can't quite believe I own such an incredible machine it is so futuristic, capable, fun and above all, clean. I love that you are so enthusiastic about the car, 'I just came' just about sums it up. Now I just need to save for a Tesla Bot to wash the car.

Yup, the LR only really makes sense if you have a round trip you often make that you can comfortably not charge for in the LR where you would have to in the SR+. Otherwise the SR+ works fine if your country has enough charging infrastructure.
@veggis

I picked up my SR+ in June, much thanks to your recommendation. I couldn't be happier with it. One of the possible downsides for me was the non-premium sound system in the SR versus the LR/performance. The stock audio is still pretty good, but I ended up installing the Hansshow wiring harness to activate 4 of the inactive speakers - it sounds even better now! And I agree with the comments here, I can only see LR being beneficial if you often go on very long roadtrips or if you don't have access to chargers (northern Norway maybe). Saving those 100k NOK for 150km shorter range and 1.2 second slower 0-100 is easily worth it IMO :-)

I have a 2021 Model 3 SR+ MIF, and I agree with your conclusion, Bjorn. I’ve only had the car for four months, but have taken it on two longish road trips: 1) with my wife and two teenage sons for a 1,100 miles, and 2) a solo trip of 1,200 miles (both are round trip figures). The SR+ was over $9,000USD less than the LR, and I certainly don’t feel I was “shorted” in driving long distances. Each leg of my trips was 500+ miles, and that meant 3 or 4 charging stops, approximately 20 min each stop. Not a hardship or inconvenience at all, as those stops were welcomed every couple of hours. Long enough to use the bathroom, get a bite/drink, stretch legs a bit, and then back on the road. For every 7 to 8 hours of trip time, an hour or so of charging. I’m sure the LR is useful, but we are very satisfied with the M3 SR+ as a family (or solo) road trip car. And we can use the $9,000 USD to pay for many such trips. It is a Road Warrior!

Hi Bjorn, Thanks for these videos, they are so very informative and interesting. I have only recently started to watch and subscribed to your channel - I have learned a lot. We have just ordered a Model 3 Long Range - I live in Australia. The model 3's here are China made cars. Surprisingly the road types and conditions you have in Norway look very similar to what we have in Oz. But fortunately, we don't have the very cold weather you experience - we have the other extreme very hot long summers! Regards, Paul.

I think larger capacity battery packs are an advantage on medium range trips of about 150 km each way meaning no charging required compared with a smaller capacity battery pack where there would be some charging involved. Long trips obviously all down to charging speed.
@SirHackaL0t.

A larger pack means you can go further before needing that first charge. It allows trips to go further without the need to charge at all as the range is better.

i ordered a MiC SR+ on 29th of July and i'll get it on 30th of August. It still is the 55kWh E6CR (E = Model 3, 6C = 55kWh LFP Battery, R = Rearwheeldrive). The new version with 60kWh would be E6LR. It is already allowed (Typengenehmigung V19 which was made for Model Y) in germany but there's no info about when and if it will come. I guess it could also happen, that Tesla keeps the Model 3 with 55kWh and puts the 60kWh only in the Y to make it better compete in range. The Model 3 SR+ MiC with 60kWh would have 491km WLTP range (leaked with the V19 documents of Model Y).

Just made a trip from Riga (Latvia) to Arzl im Pitztal (Austria).. 2000km+. with 3 people, lagage and roof box with skis. Interesting, but not quite plesant experience. Frankly, main issue is a luck of high power charging stations in eastern Europe. Either you have to consider the route through SuperCharger/Ionity only.. and thus always charge from less than 20% to 100% to reach next charing point.. and this is crazy time consuming. Or you need to consider lower power stations, which also quite problematic as they usually not right on the route and it may add up to 15-20 km just to drive to a station somewhere aside. Another issure - there can be stations belonging to different suppliers and this is another headache - you have to have all they fu..ng Apps in the phone with account establised and credit card linked. No one of them have card terminal right on the station. Once I crossed Germany border all changed quite significant. Highpower chargers are almost everywhere, and even in case this is not Supercharger or Ionity chain, you may simply pay by card using payPass/ApplePay/GooglePay (e.g Aral stations). Just for the referrence - out of 1100 KM from a hotel in Lodz, 340 km to Poland border took about 7 hours.. and this is total crap. Further, from Polant border to Arzl I have made ~760Km in about 9.5 hours..with ~2 hours of charging time (6 stops). Average speed was 95km/h (max was about 130+) and average consumption - 240W/km.

My SR+ is great in snow (with winter tyres). The reason ICE cars have a problem is weight distribution. Light at the back compared to the front where engine is. SR+ has great traction. You might have gotten less power at the Hypercharger because they sometimes have cables limited to only 400A instead of 500A. According to HYC display you got ~148kW which at 400A result in 370V at the battery which is plausible for the LFP. The charger can still provide 300kW for 800V cars (400A*800V=320kW) but Ionity states 350kW therefore they must have 500A cables. Would you mind doing a video on that kind of nerd stuff sometimes?

I was driving -10C this winter, and my Model Y SR started preheating as soon as I hit the road. It was around 75-minute trip and when I arrived to the V3 supercharger, I was able to get 170kw peak speed. Indicating that the battery was warmed enough. Preheating is important feature, but my efficiency suffered greatly as car consistently spent 3kw for preheating. Overall, it spent 3-4kwh (7-8%) of the battery just for preheating in that cold winter day. However, normally it preheats couple of minutes in spring or summer day. So it is not a huge deal. This is one of the many reasons that Tesla is the king in the EV space

This is a very strange result. When you plan a route in ABRP with the LFP Model and the nonLFP the LFP Model has like a third longer charging stops for my calculations. Now you just demonstrated that the LFP Model(aka MIC(I thought the internet already agreed on LFP Model 3)) in non ideal environment is faster than the nonLFP model in ideal ones. So now I am quite confused.

I wonder if there is anyone who can explain the reason for the difference in the charging power of the 2 Supercharge stalls when there are no other cars that are charging (13:54). Reduced power for a stall should not be an issue under these ideal conditions. Can this behavior explain why many people experience changing charging power when using Superchargers? It is basically assumed that it is the battery temperature that is the cause - and it may not be the case at all.
@rolandrohde

Interesting to see those consumption numbers compared side by side... Just one question though...are the numbers for the Tesla taken from the onboard electronics or from the Chargers? I have heard that Tesla likes to "cheat" and only displays the pure driving KWh instead of the actual consumption with climate, battery heating and so on.
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 2 года назад
That's incorrect. The consumption in Tesla is in fact including HVAC, lights, USB and everything. But many people try to spread false rumurs about this. And unfortunately many fall for it simply because Tesla is way more efficient than the legacy automakers.

Hi Bjorn. Just a quick question for you and viewers. I have a Model 3 that when driven in the dark (no street lighting) even on a three lane motorway It keeps giving messages left/right pillar camera and multiple cameras blocked or blinded. So AutoPilot disengages or won't engage. Customer service and technicians won't look at the car because they say it is normal behaviour. Well is it? Or do I have the only Model 3 that can't see in the dark?
@FutureChaosTV
@FutureChaosTV 2 года назад
If the cameras don't have infrared sensors then that behaviour could be expected as the system can't recognize anything in total darkness. Only the front and back cameras will see something because of the headlights and the lights in the back.
@mattbrent8732
@mattbrent8732 2 года назад
That is randomly happening on most model 3 at the moment. It is normal but not right. Hopefully it will get fixed in a software update. My MIC SR+ does it about once a week but mostly when bright headlights shine directly at the camera from the side. I just try and keep glass in front of camera super clean.

300 kW is for 800V system, 150 kW for 400V. there is a limit in amps that you can use with that cable, 350/400A. Supercharger V3 is 550A at 400V, too much amps and waste of energy. Maybe there will be a solution to reuse that energy wasted in heat.
@Narcissist86
@Narcissist86 2 года назад
?? what do you mean wasted energy? The car draws as much current as needed.

is not cabin heater, but supercharger cooled cable. Is waste energy from Joule Law. For cool down the cable you need extra power. The 800V system is better and efficient at high power and can sustain more power for longer time. And it is lighter.
