Join me on an exciting journey as I embark on a road trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, in my Tesla Model 3. In this experimental video, I'll be putting Tesla's navigation algorithm to the test by driving at the speed limit and closely monitoring the accuracy of its time and battery estimates between supercharging stops and our final destination.
Throughout the video, I'll provide insights into the supercharging experience, sharing firsthand observations and highlighting key statistics along the way. From charging times to battery efficiency, I'll break down the data and offer my personal opinion on Tesla's navigation algorithm and its effectiveness in real-world driving scenarios.
So if you're curious about the capabilities of Tesla's navigation system and want to learn more about the supercharging experience firsthand, don't miss out on this insightful journey. Hit play and let's hit the road together, as we uncover the truth behind Tesla's navigation algorithm on our road trip to Copenhagen!"

The "Richtgeschwindigkeit" in Germany: If an accident occurs while a road user is driving faster than the "Richtgeschwindigkeit" of 130 km/h. In this case, the operating risk of this vehicle increases and the driver can therefore be awarded a correspondingly higher liability rate. This usually applies even if the other party involved in the accident is clearly to blame for the traffic accident.
@life-with-beck
@life-with-beck Месяц назад
Wow, I was not aware of that, so driving faster than recommended on the no speed limit zones makes you a bit more guilty in case of an accident, interesting . As for the Tesla estimation, do you think the 130 km/ h speed is the one taken into account?
@mxmyx6426
@mxmyx6426 Месяц назад
@@life-with-beck I don't know, if Tesla use the speed of 130 km/h for their calculations in germany, but I think so. I think google maps also use the same speed to calculate the navigation in germany.

Yes, your insurance coverage will go rapidly down to the zero in over 130 km/h accidents. Was it 250 km/h that there is practically no coverage?

Just a little warning for the great belt bridge. You need to have a oittle extra because wind and wet road can take a lot of energy and there is actually a bit of inclination - so reserve a 5-10% extra buffer.

@@life-with-beckyes. All navigation systems take the Richtgeschwindigkeit in Germany as the speed for unrestricted stretches of the Autobahn. The annoying part is, no Navigation system, I know off, offers an option to allow you to enter your ideal speed on unrestricted stretches of the Autobahn. Therefore, I always arrive significantly earlier, than what the navigation estimated, as I tend to drive 160kph on these parts.

1000 km in a day is no problem in a Tesla. I have done so six times in Sweden in winter. Two of them, I was the only driver, 1400 km, from Åre/Östersund over Stockholm to Copenhagen. The charging breaks makes it do much more enjoyable and safe.

Fun trip, CPH is very cool. Have you used ABRP, or TeslaMate. I'm a new Model 3 owner and was really surprised at some of the options like "realtime traffic and weather" in ABRP and I'm interested in how it compares to your car.

Thanks for the comment and congrats for your car. What specs do you have? As for the ABRP, i’ve used it at the beginning but I am usually now playing with the stations from the Tesla nav for long distances. I believe ABRP can’t predict the traffic conditions , but it offers you a rough estimation of the time spent on the road.

The "extra" konsumption regarding the part af the trip to Slagelse might be partly due to temperature. When you arrive the screen said 2 degrees C. With windchill it is subzero. Maybe alsoo Wind direction has charged to. Often in Denmark you wil get a east-West or West-east Wind between about 16:00 to 19:00.
@life-with-beck
@life-with-beck Месяц назад
Thanks for the comment. Indeed, this might be an explanation. I did not think about the wind direction change… but I can say that I did not sense a severe wind in the steering wheel.

I really hope Tesla will soon significantly improve their navigation software and source data. Such as: - It often puts unnecessary turns in because the map data is bad (e.g. not properly connected roads). - I would like to put in what SOC I prefer at stops and destination. - I would like to state whether I want shorter or longer charging stops. Including to select a Charging stop in the calculated route to overwrite case by case. *Sure, I can set the general charging limit, but that is not granular enough for me* - I would like the option to include other charging networks, like EnBW and IONITY. - I would like an option to set specific roads to be avoided. As I have a road near me the navigation constantly takes but it is a far too narrow road for my liking. - I would like to set Highways to be avoided, rather than just Ferry and Toll roads.
@life-with-beck
@life-with-beck Месяц назад
Thanks for the comment. I agree with all the improvements suggested, I believe that in terms of Navigation, Tesla has still some stuff to work on. For long trips I also use Waze for navigation and I’ve seen that sometimes the route chosen by Tesla is not necessarily the fastest one. When the battery is running out I am searching for a supercharger to charge :)

Nice video, learned a lot about owning a Tesla and driving long distance with it! As a side note; I was shocked about the questions the Danish border agent asked you. I had to look it up, and I learned Denmark has temporarily introduced border controls due to terrorism threats. I assume you have a Romanian passport, and by the time you did this trip Romania was not yet part of Shengen, so maybe that's why you were getting this 'treatment', but it really makes me wonder what they ask someone with a Shengen passport.
@life-with-beck
@life-with-beck Месяц назад
Thanks a lot, appreciate it 🙏. Well the car has dutch plates, so probably was just a random check. I was a bit surprised too, first time being stopped at the border :)
@gyuri647
@gyuri647 Месяц назад
Romanian here living in Denmark for 15 years, the border control was introduced back in 2015 and keeps getting extended due to different reasons ( terrorism, migration, war etc… ). The cars with dutch plates get usually stop due to suspicion of carrying illegal drugs, so don’t think has anything to do with the nationality of the driver.
@nooneswaggalikeus
@nooneswaggalikeus Месяц назад
Danish here, the border control "treatment" (= a minor check) is probably either completely routine based or related to the NL plates on the car. Single male in an NL registered car = higher probability of drug offenses as it's a common route for organized crime trafficking drugs into Scandinavia. The Danish border control (police force) is generally high standard and data driven. No reason to believe that a Romanian passport would be of any specific focus when entering Denmark.

@Vardraq
@Vardraq Месяц назад
12:33 Preconditioning, at least for Teslas, does not necessarily mean higher consumption. The System may also just take heat from other systems, like the motors, and divert it to the Battery, and therefore not generating additional heat through the heat pump.
@marcokoopal3527
@marcokoopal3527 Месяц назад
It does have higher consumption. Without preconditioning the average it’s 150/160 kWh/100. When it’s preconditioning the consumption is around 210/230.
@life-with-beck
@life-with-beck Месяц назад
Thanks fir the feedback. I also saw in the “energy” stats as @marcokoopal3527 was saying that the preconditioning is the main factor that increases the consumption when you re approaching a supercharger. If your theory is right, shouldn’t this be reflected in the “energy” view as well?

@life-with-beck
@life-with-beck Месяц назад
Indeed, thanks for your comment, the prices were updated since I took the video. I also feel that the estimation in Germany is not quite accurate. I believe the main reason is that the speed you go on the “no speed limit” zones is >130 and Tesla’s estimation is for 130.
