Extremely gifted drummer… always the right groove, the right fill in the right place… and solos… No one better…

Hearts rock chops often get overlooked but were absolute top notch, heavy yet articulate and driven.

Met Mike a few times around Seattle back in the day. I found him to be a gracious, even keeled human.

I was a young heart fan and I will tell you that Mike's drumming blew me away and actually made me more aware and focused on the talents of future drummers. His drumming was just magical for me and I would consider him one of the greats. 😍🤩

He has some iconic fills on that first album. Damn near impossible to replicate. Incredible drummer

True. He also had some great fills on the other LPs. My favorite is when he enters, in power, on "Mistral Wind" on "Dog & Butterfly". I just get such a kick from that! I think the drums had some phasing on them as well, which made them sound otherworldly until the end.

The first is several drummers, the producer wanted Heart to be a Ann, Nancy thing with hired guns, Michael came late into the sessions, Dave Wilson did Magic Man, Duris Maxwell did How Deep..., Kat Hendriske the rest except for White Lightning and Sing Child which were Michael, you can also see the cover is just the ladies which signals it's all about and not a band, by recording of Magazine they were a band and Michael is on all tracks up to the break up.

I can still remember the rock and roll HOF performance, and it just felt tense. Also it must have been f'd up to have written the riff for Barracuda and have to watch some guy play it at the HOF show, that should be the guy that wrote it, not the guy that does it now.

Mike played drums for a band called "Orion the Hunter" which was a Boston offshoot band... :^)

Thank you for interviewing Michael! To any fan of early Heart music it’s Michael’s drum sound that drives the band..He had a great sound, feel and drive to his playing..Seems like a genuinely grounded individual without the Rock Star silliness so many seem to possess

Mike's drumming and sound was awesome. What a great band it was. I wonder what it could have evolved into with the same line up and without the bitterness which followed. Another case of what could have been.

After seeing the Video of early Heart playing at a college...and seeing all the talent bursting out from all sides. I mean, who knew Anne could play flute like that? And, seeing where the Heart music went afterwards...I agree with Michael..and dude, you did an amazing job drumming!

If you listen carefully to his drumming style and kit setup, so John Bonham and the talent to go along with it. Incredible drummer.

I completely agree...Mike was in HEART when it was a great creative, evolving band. It really should have gone beyond "Dog and Butterfly". Few bands got that far..and the band live proves that they could easily have surpassed Led Zep. It was there, in there hands. I really wish Ann and Nancy would reconvene the original Heart lineup.

I have been critical of some of his drumming and it is refreshing to hear that he too thinks it could have been better. My first time in a recording session was very humbling. Now I have a much better appreciation of the pressure musicians are under to get something perfect with a minimum number of takes. Michael sounds like a great guy that you would want to hang with. I don't say that about a lots of famous musicians.

yeah and most of the time it isn't up to you, so the band, producer may hear a take and say that's it that's the drum track, and you're like, no I can do it better and they don't hear it, to them it's tight and they can build on it and they're moving on

Isn't this the guy Nancy left Roger for?? I can't imagine how Roger felt about that, I personally couldn't take it

In the long term, neither could Roger. Part of the reason that he freaked out onstage that time. Still, there's never been any bad blood between Mike and Roger. They teamed up with Steve again in 1990 as three-fifths of "Alias".

Only constructive criticism i have is, and maybe more than likely i dont know about the time and editing issues but why these interviews are all just bits and parts.. chopped up i to 3 different videos? Why not have the entire interview her and now instead of at another time? In a few days... ? I personally wouldn't post. Just 4 mns of each and every interview only to post the 2nd n 3rd part in a few day later. I dont understand not just posting the interview inits entirety.

Certain unhealthy excesses and ego trips prior to, and around the time of recording "Private Audition" in 1982. He and Steve Fossen were technically "fired" as soon as the album was done, but both have stated that they were relieved to go, much like Roger a couple of years before. Mike alludes to the band's then-musical direction in this interview...but it was clear there had been a power shift in the group...and "big hair" days beckoned.

A lot of people forget about Denny Carmassi, who was a drummer with the band for over 10 years and joined shortly after Mike left.
